“Hello, Little Bird.”

Abbie jumped as the voice whispered over her consciousness. She whirled around. Sure enough, Xander leaned against the wall. Clutching her hand to her chest, she asked, “What are you doing here?”

His smile was wry as the corners of his eyes crinkled. “I could ask you the same thing. Are you here to pilfer my photography gig?”

It was only then that she noticed the camera around his neck. “Oh, you’re working.” Who was Lex that he could afford a photographer of Xander’s caliber just for his birthday? “Not poaching, I swear. I’m here for the party.”

He chuckled softly. “You can relax. I’m only having a bit of fun with you.” He nodded toward Lex. “I saw you dancing with the birthday boy.”

She silently thanked God for the low light in the bar, because it meant that her sudden flush was hidden. “I, uh, yeah.”

“You know him well?” His question was almost too soft to be heard over the din of the rap song Jasper played.

She shook her head. “No. Not really. We just met recently.”

“Pretty hot dance for two people who just met.”

Abbie frowned. The dragon that was her temper woke from a long slumber and stretched its talons. Though cooler heads prevailed, and she remembered Xander was her teacher. She cleared her throat and searched the crowd for Max or Sophie. “No, not really.”

“Not from what I could see at this vantage point. As you know, the camera never lies.”

Had he photographed them dancing? What had her face looked like with Lex’s hips pressed into hers? If it reflected the way she’d been feeling at the time, euphoric desire and a little giddiness, then she was in trouble. “You’ll need an artist release to use that.” She couldn’t put her finger on why, but Xander’s being here irked her. His butting in irked her even more. Something else about him bothered her too. Maybe it was his air of overconfidence, but something about him pushed her buttons, and she had to resist the urge to toss her drink at him. That would have been a waste of perfectly good water.

“That I would, if I intended to use it for anything.”

Through gritted teeth, she asked, “So how do you know Alexi?”

Xander grinned. “Alexi is it?” He smirked. “I used to throw away his dirty nappies.”

Confused, she blinked.

His sudden laugh transformed his face, making him even better looking, but also making him approachable and less cocky. “He’s my brother.”

Brother? Well that explained the common last name. And Lex had said his brother was a photographer. But she had a feeling like he’d deliberately not told her about Xander. Granted, probably many a girl got close to Lex hoping to brush against fame or something.

Now that she looked closely, she wondered how the hell she could have missed it. Alexi cocked his head the same way Xander did. Had the same almost-smiling uptick of his lips. And their bone structure was similar as well. Except Xander’s eyes leaned toward dark slate, and Alexi’s were a soft silver. “Oh. Small world, I guess.”

“Indeed.” He continued to study her. But again, his scrutiny wasn’t sexual….exactly. At least she didn’t think it was.

She stood there, awkwardly shifting from foot to foot to distribute her weight in the killer heels. She wanted to appear nonchalant, but he unsettled her. “What? Why are you staring at me?”

His grin flashed. Wow. It should be illegal for him to do that in public. The simple act of the smile made him look angelic and sweet. He was possessed of the devil’s charm.

“Relax. I already told you, I don’t sleep with students.” He shrugged. “Your face is interesting. I’m trying to figure out the best light to shoot you in.”

He thought her face was fascinating? Right. Didn’t mean she was going to let him shoot her though. “I don’t think so.”

He nodded absently. “Well, if you change your mind, I suppose you know where to find me.”

“I suppose I do.” She began to wonder exactly how many of his students he’d ‘photographed.’

His next question surprised her.

“What do you want with my brother?”

She wasn’t sure she’d heard him right. “Excuse me?”

“My brother—what do you want with him?”

Bewildered, she sputtered. “I-I don’t want anything from him. I barely know the guy. It was just a dance.”

Xander’s eyes were stormy as he leaned into her space. He smelled like Lex. They apparently had the same taste in the unique cologne. The scent swirled around her, and she had to shake her head to clear it.

“Bullshit. I can see it on his face. You intrigue him. Let me do you a favor. Steer clear of him.”

Heat prickled her arm. “I’m sorry, but as far as I’m concerned, I only need to take your advice in the classroom. Outside of it, I can take care of myself.”

He cocked a brow. “Who said I was worried about you?”

With open-mouthed shock, Abbie could only stare as Xander sauntered off to join the throngs on the dance floor. He was immediately joined by a blonde and a brunette, each vying for his attention.

Who did he think he was? She had a father, and she didn’t need to take advice from her professor, who looked more like a player than any teacher she’d ever seen. And if he wanted to steer her away from Lex, he’d just done the one thing likely to make her run toward his brother.

FINAL4

What London Meant to Me by Nana Malone.

We’ve all experienced this. The overwhelming urge to run away from your life, from the thing that scares you most or hems you in.

In my latest New Adult Romance, my heroine Abbie takes off for London under the cover of nightfall, running away from expectations, her family, her ex’s betrayal. But it isn’t so much about what she’s running from, it’s about what she’s running toward—passion, a sense of adventure, and a dream.

I had that moment myself. And yes, I ran to London. After the events of September 11th, I struggled with staying in New York. I was in a dead end job doing something I didn’t love and the city that was normally so vibrant and alive felt hollow to me. After a year long stint in Ghana for a contract, I opted to attend graduate school in London. After all, I’d always enjoyed the city.

But I was unprepared for how alive I’d feel once I got there. In a matter of weeks, I had a job, had registered for my classes and knew the tube and bus schedule as if I was a born Londoner. Most people would assume I had the most fun tripping in my heels, running from club to club. Lol. And while that was enjoyable, I honestly had the most fun at my job. I know, weird right?

I worked at a call center full of ex-pat foreign nationals. I met people from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Brazil. Everyone was young and adventurous and wanted to explore. The moments between calls and between shifts were where I made some of the friends I still have to this day.

I also became addicted to running home between work and school to catch an episode of East Enders (A UK soap opera) and would have these hilarious philosophical conversations about why British television starts didn’t have that pretty, polished glow to them that our stars in the US did. With my schedule, I often had my groceries delivered. I took dance classes at Pineapple Dance studios and explored Covent Garden on the weekends. Going to the park meant Hyde Park and shopping meant the High Street or the West End.

But most importantly, in those moments of exploration and fun and dancing, and combing British bookstores looking for every Lesley Pierce and Martina Cole book known to mankind, I found myself. Oh yeah, and I went to a few classes too.

The friends and love that Abbie finds in London will change the course of her life, just like London did for me. And while the book is of course a fictional work. I couldn’t help but infuse some of my adventures into it. I hope you enjoy Abbie and Lex’s story as they explore themselves, shed their pasts and find true love.

I realize in this moment that the true reason I’m on this journey to find Drake is not just because I miss him and want him back, I’m also missing a huge part of me. Until we’re together again, my life isn’t complete. Without him I’m not whole.” – Morgan

“… I’m so sorry I couldn’t go to you. It was nearly impossible not to but Morgan we wouldn’t be standing here right now if I had. You found me Baby. When you met me on your first day at Baylor what seems like a lifetime ago you found me. Only this time I’m not letting you go.” – Drake

Struggling to get her life back on track after being left suddenly and inexplicably by (secret) boyfriend –not- boyfriend and boss Drake Baylor Jr., Morgan Lane searches the globe to find Drake knowing that the only way to truly live the life she’s worked so hard for is with him by her side.

Banished to Zurich, Switzerland by his father after being caught Breaking the Rules, Drake has nine months to get the European Division of Baylor Industries back on track. Again, he must obey the rules so that he can hopefully return to his life with Morgan and take the helm of Baylor Industries.

Everything is going according to plan as usual for Adrian Thompson who has just gotten Drake banished to Switzerland as part of his plan to get Morgan (his college sweetheart and hopefully future trophy wife) back in his life for good. With a little help from Lana Lane, Morgan’s mother, Adrian is hoping to have Morgan wearing his ring by New Year’s Eve.

After a few months of being wooed by old flame and now boss Adrian, and without so much as a word from Drake, Morgan hesitantly accepts Adrian’s invitation to join him for New Year’s Eve in St.Moritz Switzerland. Foiling Adrian’s plan, a “chance encounter” finds Morgan back in Drake’s arms.

Will Drake and Morgan be able to overcome the distance and time that is now between them along with a few of the hurdles that life has thrown their way? Morgan and Drake are once again faced with figuring out how to start their new future together- this time not Breaking the Rules, only Bending them.

Morgan

“Morgan, where are you, are you alright? It’s late,” Amanda asks as she picks up the phone, her husky sleep voice barely audible.

“I’m sorry, I forgot about the time change. I just woke up. I’m stuck in a Paris hangover.”

“A Paris what? Morgie, I know I’m half asleep, but that doesn’t even come close to making sense,” Amanda mumbles into the phone.

“A Paris hangover. I don’t know, I just made it up. It’s like I’m here, in the city of love. A city with so much history and so many things to see.

I should be out enjoying my day, but I’m in bed with a headache, trying not to throw up. It’s like when you party hard on Saturday, and you wake up Sunday and it’s such a beautiful day outside. You know you should be out enjoying the last few moments of your weekend but all you can manage to do is lie bed with a killer headache trying not to puke and all you want is some glorious McDonald’s Angel to show up at your door with a fountain Coke and fries,” I explain.

“I understand. So why don’t you feel well? Did you pick up a bug with all of the recycled air on your flight?” Amanda asks. She’s starting to sound a little more awake which I’m grateful for, but feel bad for waking her up.

“No, I’ve been here for a week now looking for Drake, if it was the recycled plane air I would have come down with something sooner I think.”

“Then what is it, Morgan?”

“He’s not here, Amanda. He’s supposed to be here. I’ve searched everywhere. He’s supposed to be here, and he’s not…WHERE IS HE?” I start to sob into the phone.

“Shh. Don’t cry, Morgan. You’ll find him. He’s out there somewhere, he has to be. You know he loves you,” Amanda says, trying to soothe me.

“He is out there somewhere, just not any place I’ve looked. Maybe he doesn’t want to be found. At least not by me. I’ve gone everywhere looking for him. I really thought I’d find him, Amanda. I thought I’d find my happiness. What do I do now?”

“Oh, Morgan, I’m so sorry. I wish you could have found Drake. You’re right… maybe he doesn’t want to be found right now. Maybe he’s still working things out for himself. You said his father dissolved his position. That’s a huge blow for someone who has worked so hard to get his life on track. Maybe he’s still working out a way to give you the life you’ve always wanted. You told me he wants to do that for you. Morgan, you said he told you in Vegas he couldn’t wait to marry you. Maybe time alone is exactly what he has needed, that’s why he isn’t there looking for you too. You know I love you more than anything, Morgan, but you might not like what I’m about to say…maybe it’s time to come home, put your big girl panties on, get a job, and face life in the real world again.”

Interviewing Drake and Morgan

I recently sat down with Drake Baylor Jr. and the love of his life, Morgan Lane for a candid interview discussing love, loss, and the risks they’ve taken while bending or sometimes even breaking the rules.

Morgan, after his departure you searched the globe for Drake, hoping to find him and bring him home. What made you so determined that you would find him?

From the moment we met, Drake and I have had a connection; as cliché as that sounds. We tried to stay away from each other knowing what would happen if we were caught breaking the stupid rules Drake’s dad set for him. We were careless and we got caught by Adrian in Vegas. Within a matter of days my world had crumbled around me. I no longer had the job and career I had worked so hard for. Drake had dropped out of my life and I felt hopeless. Drake Sr.’s words tore right through me as he said Drake would already be off in the arms of someone else, but even as I heard them, I knew something wasn’t right. Drake Sr. tried to tell me that he had dissolved his son’s position and that Drake wanted nothing to do with me, but I still felt our connection. I knew he had been sent somewhere as a punishment, I just had to figure out where. Having nothing but time on my hands, I set out to find Drake and bring him home. It wasn’t so much that I was determined I’d be able to find him, more like I didn’t know how to move on with my life without him.

But you weren’t able to find him…

Sadly no. And I was able to find a way to continue living my life without him in it but I was devastated. I never gave up on him though, and now that I have Drake back, I never have to.

Drake, you were understandably miserable in Zurich. What kept you going during that time, and how did you manage not to repeat past behavior with women, drugs, and alcohol?

It’s not what kept me going, but who…this beautiful woman sitting right next to me. I made the selfish mistake of flying Morgan out to Vegas for the weekend. I missed her, and wanted her out there with me. If I would have kept my head down, and returned home to her when the weekend was over we wouldn’t have missed that time together. I am a big believer that what happens always happens for a reason though. Perhaps the time we spent apart reaffirmed what we already knew, which was that we wanted to be together forever. Knowing that if I stayed the course and did my job in Zurich I could be together with Morgan again kept me together and focused. Being with Morgan was all I needed to push through every day. As far as past behavior, I don’t need anything or anyone to make me feel complete. Using drugs and women in the past was my way of filling the hole in my heart left by my mother’s death and my father’s absence. Morgan makes me feel whole. She’s the only one I see. The way I dealt with things in the past is no longer on my radar.

Morgan, do you ever worry that the mistakes Drake has made in his past will come back to hurt him?

No, I’ve never worried about that. Drake has been completely open and honest with me about his past. There isn’t anything that could surface about him that I’m not already aware of. We’ve all made mistakes before and I’m so proud of Drake for turning his life around and not repeating that cycle of behavior. He lives his life determined to make each day better than the last. If any part of his past should try hurt his future I’ll be right by his side supporting him.

Drake, how did it feel reading Morgan’s emails, knowing you couldn’t answer them?

Morgan’s emails were heartbreaking. Knowing I was the one causing the pain and with just a quick email or phone call I could explain everything and put us back on the right path was soul crushing. Morgan knows what she means to me, and to see her so heartbroken that she was questioning whether or not I would come back to her was really hard to read. I appreciated her honesty though. Each email she wrote me, however hard it was to read, still renewed my focus to return to her without further breaking any rules because by writing to me, it meant she still cared.

Drake, how hard was it not to turn around when you heard Morgan calling your name in the airport in Paris?

I took that trip to Paris to get away from Zurich for the weekend and clear my head. I was missing my girl and needed to feel close to her without screwing up in any way. That is why I chose to go to Paris. Morgan loves it there and we’ve talked about spending time there together so many times that I thought a weekend in Paris would renew my focus in doing my job so I could go home to her. When I saw Morgan in the airport I felt completely gutted. I was twenty feet away from her as she walked around that mom tying her kid’s shoes. I wanted so badly to call her name, or run up to her and throw my arms around her and just hold on forever but I knew I couldn’t. Morgan knows I trust her completely. I knew she wouldn’t have told a soul that we saw each other, but even so, I couldn’t risk it. My dad was a very connected man, and it would have only taken one person to recognize me with Morgan and report back to him and it would have been over. I think it was even harder for me not to turn around that day when Morgan called my name than it was to leave for Zurich in the first place. I could hear the excitement and the sadness in her voice as she called to me. Watching her collecting her bag then hailing a cab completely defeated and heartbroken is a feeling I never want to have again.

Morgan, how did it feel to learn that Adrian lied to you and really was responsible for Drake being sent to Zurich?

Because of our history, it was a really crappy to learn Adrian had lied to me. I knew in my heart that we would never be together and that Drake has always been the one for me, but knowing that all of Adrian’s motives to get me back weren’t pure was disappointing because he’s always been a better person than that. I could go on and on about how Adrian is responsible for my separation from Drake, and how that makes him such an a-hole, but the truth is, Drake and I broke the rules. We knew the risks and we took them anyway because we love each other so much that any risk is worth it if it means we are together. Drake didn’t have to fly me out there and take such a risk, and I didn’t have to go. If we hadn’t broken the rules, we wouldn’t have been caught and it was our penance to pay. It was the worst time I’ve ever had in my life, but it brought us here today, so it was worth it in the end.

Drake, what is it that you love so much about Morgan?

You’ve been in this room the past twenty minutes right? (laughing) First of all, my girl here is a complete knockout. I get lost in her eyes daily. I have to ask her to repeat herself all the time and she thinks I’m not listening to her but the truth is, I’m so mesmorized by her beauty I completely zone out. Besides her undeniable beauty, Morgan is so bright, and determined, and she loves so fiercely. She doesn’t judge me and my faults, she loves me despite them. She has a smart mouth the fires me up like no other too. She’s the total package and I thank my lucky stars every day that she loves me just as much as I love her.

Morgan, now that you and Drake can be together as a couple out in the open, what are you looking forward to?

I’m just ready to start our life together. I’m excited to go on double dates with Amanda and Garrett, and to start crossing things off our bucket list. Drake and I both dream big, and have already started to see some of our dreams coming true and I can’t wait to live the rest of our lives as we want to. The only rules we want to live by are the ones we make for ourselves.

Drake, any final thoughts?

No, I think my girl summed it up pretty well. We have the world at our finger tips, and couldn’t be more excited to go explore. (Turns to Morgan,) By the way Babe, speaking of Amanda and Garrett, we have lunch plans with them…something tells me ours isn’t the only one we’ll be planning in the near future…

Marcus

I’m a rock star…

I remember that being this great idea that meant all of my dreams would become a reality. I could click my fingers, and anything I want would appear in front of me. Being obscenely famous is as close to magic as you can get.

The problem is, it’s lonely as fuck.

I’ve just spent two years travelling both Australia and the world, singing to audiences in every country imaginable. I’ve fucked more girls than I can possibly count. Done everything I’ve ever wanted to do, and a whole bunch of shit I didn’t even know existed.

I basked in the adoration of my fans. Let all of my values just slip away until I was the quintessential famous dickwad that I am today.

Now, I’m not even sure I’m ok with looking at myself in the mirror.

I used to have friends. I used to have family. I even thought I was in love once… Now, all I have are hangers on, and staff who are paid to nod their heads and make sure I’m happy.

But I’m not. I’m not happy at all.

I think back to where all this started, to that fucking video when I threw a tantrum on stage because I wanted the girl my brother had. I thought I loved her. At the time, I really did. But now I know it wasn’t love. Love is something I’ve never experienced in my whole over the top, gregarious life. Hell, I don’t even love myself. I’m sick of seeing my face plastered around. I’m sick of hearing my name chanted out loud. I’m sick of my own voice.

I need a break, and now that I’m finally back home where I started, I’m hoping that it won’t be long before I get that. Maybe I’ll pretend to be a normal person for a while. It’s amazing how many people believe me when I deny being me…

GUEST POST

The Beautiful Series Continues…

I get a lot of questions from readers wanting to know if they need to read every single book in my Beautiful Series. As much as I would like for you to read all of them, the easy answer is no. Each book is the complete HEA of one particular couple, and if you would like some more insight into their relationship then you can generally find a companion novella from my Beauty in Between series to help you out and allow you to spend some more time with your favourites.

Even though you can jump in at any point, a lot of readers would like to follow the timeline, and read from start to current release. If that’s something that suits you then the recommended order is as follows -

Too Close: The Beauty in Between

A Beautiful Struggle

Phoenix: The Beauty in Between

A Beautiful Forever

Commitment: The Beauty in Between

A Beautiful Melody

A Beautiful Rock

I love writing this continuing series as it gives us a chance to get a glimpse of past characters. You get to see that they are still together, still maintaining their friendships and growing as people. The stories span many different industries and settings, but ultimately, all of my characters are Australian, and all of them are working through their early adulthood, trying to figure out what kind of person they want to be.

Learning to trust is a huge factor in most of the series. Some of the characters have had distressing pasts and need to find a way to exist in a world that hurt them.

In A Beautiful Rock, we meet a few new characters as well as getting a glimpse of some of the old. It follows Marcus (we met him in A Beautiful Melody) as he embarks on an inward journey. It’s time for him to take a good look at himself and decide what kind of a man he wants to be.

While he’s at war with his own thoughts, he meets Lisa Russell. She’s new to the series and seems to be the one person on the planet who doesn’t know who Marcus Bailey is. The fact he’s a rockstar doesn’t impress her, and with a few secrets of her to keep hidden, she’d rather stay as far away from Marcus as possible. However, Marcus isn’t very good at taking no for an answer…

Within the story, you’ll also be introduced to the couple who will continue the series with my next instalment, A Beautiful Star. I’ll be really interested to hear who you’ll think it will be.

Until we meet again, happy reading!

When Mia turns eighteen, she spreads her wings–and makes more mistakes than she can count. What the world doesn’t know is that her mother is much worse than any drug she could shoot into her veins, and despite her best efforts, Mia can’t quiet the screech of her past nor the cacophony of fame.

Until she meets him.

Liam Walker knows all too well what it’s like to fall from grace. A soulful rocker with a one-hit wonder under his belt, he believes in love–and he believes in Mia. He doesn’t know how to save what’s left of his career, but he knows that they belong together. He breathes for her.

If only she would let him in…

Writing Whisper by Ava Claire.

Most days, I wake up, check my texts and emails, then head over to jezebel.com and check their daily gossip round up. It’s all tongue in cheek, chuckling at the crazy things celebrities do or say, and for a few minutes I get to live vicariously through the rich and famous. To be honest, I envied them. Who wouldn’t want to star in some acclaimed movie, wear drop dead gorgeous designer gowns and shoes, and live the jet-set life?

Writing Whisper changed my mind.

Whisper tells the story of Mia Kent. Mia is a former child actor who starred in a popular tv show, Carolina, California. As soon as she hit eighteen and left the show, she decided to star in projects that were as far from her wholesome image as possible–unfortunately, her fans didn’t make the transition with her. As her star dimmed, the thing that kept her relevant was her partying antics: staggering out of clubs, seen with a different guy every night of the week, seen with drug paraphernalia etc.

While I was writing the story, I wondered what it would be like to feel like the world expected things from you. That they put you in a box and that’s what you were supposed to be; the same sweet, engaging, well-behaved girl the world fell in love with…or else you’re just looking for attention. If growing up in the public eye is tough, being an adult when the world watched you grow up and think they know who you are must be unbearable. Mia is far from perfect, with skeletons in her closet and hurt that no one gets to see. All the see is another child actress that crashed and burned when they hit 18.

So now when I scan the gossip news, I crack a smile but I wonder what we don’t get to see. The ugly side of fame that the cameras don’t capture.

SYNOPSIS

Our love is on his terms. He contacts me only through notes − unpredictable and untraceable. When we meet, he can touch me, but I’m not allowed to touch him. When we make love, it’s only after I have been bound and blindfolded. It’s the only time I truly feel alive. Which is why I play along with it. For now.

Caden Thaine is the most sinfully beautiful man I have ever seen. But more than that, his touch sets me on fire. And dear God, do I ache for him. I don’t know where he lives or even what he does. But this doesn’t scare me. My only fear is that one day his messages will stop.

I know he’s hiding something. But that’s okay. I am hiding things too. Like my real name and… who I really am. But the deeper I fall for him, the stronger my curiosity becomes.

I could never have imagined just how much our lives are bound. And that pulling at his tangled web of secrets would cause my own dark past to come back to try and reclaim me. Will we survive? Will our love?

Adult romantic suspense. +18 years.

Book Review ~ ‘Bound by Lies’ by Hanna Peach ~ 5 Stars!

‘Bound by Lies’ is one of those books that has turned me into an addict. As soon as I finished reading I immediately started squealing and blubbering away to anyone who would listen about the amazing awesomeness of this book, before I proceeded to goodreads the series to find out when the next book would be released. No date as of yet, but as I’m now an addict, I check goodreads every day to see whether a release day has been announced.

This story was absolutely phenomenal. I have felt a little let down by some of the more erotic novels I have read of late, so really hoped that this one would live up to its intriguing blurb. It surpassed all my expectations, and my god was it amazing.

This is a very character driven novel, which I adore. I loved to see the ways that main character Kitten (she never divulges her real name!) developed throughout the story. She is hiding from a painful past, which was so much more heartbreaking than I first imagined, and I revelled in every scene that she had with Caden as she became a little stronger and finding a part of herself that she had lost, just as he did with her.

The mystery of Caden’s real identity was paced to perfection, and I was left wondering throughout the book just how much we really knew of him, and fighting the trust that I felt for him because of his love for Kitten, even as I hoped more than anything that there was a good reason for his secrecy.

Author Hanna Peach has a real talent with words, and the love scenes were written in a classy way which was such a pleasure to read after I’d read a few too many cringy erotica novels. The sensual style of writing was combined brilliantly with the mysterious and almost suspenseful meetings between Caden and Kitten, and there was something so fresh about it that I just can’t wait to read more from this author again.

The storyline is a really emotional and breathtaking one. I don’t want to give away any details for fear of spoilers, but I promise you will not regret downloading this book today. It is up there with my top favourites, and has become a part of me as I wait in anticipation to see how Caden and Kitten’s story continues in the next book in the series.

HEA for Sophie and Alejandro!

She’s driven to save her life. He’s haunted by breaking one. Some secrets are risky to share. But nothing’s more powerful than falling in love…

Nineteen-year-old Sophie has the kind of hope that makes her do weird things–like leave her family and friends behind in her small hometown and travel thousands of miles to a strange city–Los Angeles.

She didn’t plan on getting into the middle of a bar fight on the USCLA campus her first night in town. She didn’t want to be rescued by twenty-one-year-old Alejandro, the hottest guy she’s ever met. She has no time to fall for a guy because her stakes are high–life and death.

Sophie’s starting a promising, experimental USCLA Medical study that could heal her debilitating disease. But California’s filled with all kinds of alternative healers offering medical miracles. When she ventures on her own to find them, she quickly discovers that L.A.’s a tough city, with bad guys more than happy to take advantage of her.

She hires Alejandro to be her driver and her bodyguard. Their journeys take them to sunny beaches, dicey ghettos, campus hang-outs, gang-infested hoods and celebrity parties. And she learns that healing doesn’t always come the way you think you need it.

Sophie’s healing is six-foot-two-inches tall, has stunning hazel eyes, black, shiny hair and a rock solid chest that shelters her. Her healing is a smart, gorgeous Alpha Boy with a killer sense of humor–Alejandro.

As they fall in love, she realizes Alejandro isn’t your typical college party boy–he has a dangerous past. And Sophie isn’t the only one who keeps secrets.

Book Review ~ ‘The Story of You and Me’ by Pamela DuMond ~ 5 Stars!

There was something about this book that just drew me in from the first page, and has stayed with me since I finished it. It wasn’t just the perfectly paced romance or the stunning writing style, but the way that the characters were just so simply human, fighting for their right to live and love, and how their relationships were formed through the human need for connection, companionship and understanding.

Sophie was a great heroine whom I identified with from the word go. The devotion she showed to her grandmother was heart-warming and it almost broke my heart to see the pains and lengths she went to in order to get answers for her and those like her who suffered from MS. I liked how this book really highlighted the illness as one that may seem invisible to onlookers, but reeks havoc on the individual, who like in Sophie’s case, are just trying to live their life as normally as possible.

The connection she shared with Alejandro was just stunning. I adored his protective nature, as well as his very human desire to repent for his past mistakes, something that he used as a way to become a better person and help those around him, rather than making excuses for himself. He was the kind of hero that Sophie needed, and the way their relationship developed through flirty sarcasm, to strong friendship which became a love was just beautiful to watch. It was paced perfectly and I never thought the story was moving too fast or too slow. I liked how there was an almost road-trip feel to the story and it was eye-opening to see the kind of people out there that take advantage of people’s weaknesses and illnesses. Being a spiritual healer myself, it was heartbreaking but sadly true to see the real faces of some so called ‘healers’. Whilst I didn’t agree with all of Sophie’s choices, I felt for her so badly to have been treated badly by people she trusted to help her, all so she could help give her grandmother and herself a better value of life.

Everything about this novel just sang to me. I loved the character driven story and how I connected with the characters so quickly and strongly, I adored the relationship development with Alejandro and Sophie, and really hoped they could put their demons behind them so they could be happy together. I loved how real the characters were, and how they made mistakes and bad choices even for the right reasons.

This was a brilliant story that I can’t recommend enough.

SYNOPSIS

Mary is stuck in Section One, living with three hundred women in a crumbling hospital. She wonders what life was like two centuries ago, before the Cleansing wiped out all the men. But the rules—the Matriarch’s senseless rules—prevent her from exploring the vacant city to find out.

Taylor’s got a dangerous secret: he’s a boy. His compound’s been destroyed, and he’s been relocated to Section One. Living under the Matriarch means giving up possessions, eating canned food and avoiding all physical contact. Baggy clothes hide his flat chest and skinny legs, but if anyone discovers what lies beneath, he’ll be exiled. Maybe even executed.

Mary’s never seen a boy—the Matriarch cut the pictures of men from the textbooks—and she doesn’t suspect Taylor’s secret. If she knew, she might understand the need to stop the girls from teasing him. If she knew, she might realize why she breaks the rules, just to be near him. Then again, she might be frightened to death of him.

Taylor should go. The Matriarch is watching his every move. But running means leaving Mary—and braving the land beyond the compound’s boundaries.

Excerpt: From Taylor’s Point of View

I place the biology textbook on a stainless-steel table, flip through the yellowing pages and stop on a cross-section of a woman. Her organs are carefully illustrated—heart, lungs, uterus. The next page is missing. Not ripped out. Cut, as if sliced with a surgeon’s scalpel.

The library at home has the complete book. I’ve seen the missing page—the anatomy of man. An extinct creature, as far as anyone knows.

A voice from behind says, “What are you reading?”

My shoulders tense when I turn to see Mary. None of the girls at home looked like her—dark eyes, perfectly straight nose and full, round lips. Her hair brushes my cheek as she leans over. She shouldn’t be so close. I ease the book shut and try to look calm.

“We studied biology last year,” she says. “Did your teacher go over it?”

In Section Seven, we self-studied, but she doesn’t need to know that. “No.” I carry the book to the shelf.

She follows. “You should read the part on genetics. It’s really interesting.”

I slip the book between a car manual and a medical dictionary. “I’ve read the whole thing.”

“But you said you hadn’t studied it yet.”

To avoid her gaze, I stare out the window at the abandoned skyscrapers and trash-covered barriers. “Don’t you have class or something?”

“We’re on lunch break.”

I growl. “Go eat.” My voice is too husky, too deep.

“I was tryin’ to be nice.” She turns to walk away.

I grab her wrist to stop her. Her skin is warm and smooth.

“What are you doing?” She wrenches her arm free. “You’re gonna end up in the pit.”

I step away, and she hurries toward the door, shoulders back and chin high. The loose-fitting hospital gown can’t hide the curve of her figure.

I want to touch her again.

Not Your Typical Love Story

My books tend to have intricate plots and a lot of complications. Oftentimes the characters are put in uncomfortable situations, such as being forced to relocate, grieving a loss or being pursued by the protagonist, which can make romance problematic. This may be their first real relationship, even their first kiss. Jumping full speed into a love scene makes little sense.

I’ll use The Hunger Games for example. The relationship between Katniss and Peeta is complicated, to say the least. They are fighting for their lives, and on camera to boot. It makes perfect sense that their kissing scene is awkward and their relationship strained.

In my novel The Only Boy, Taylor is hiding his identity. He’s lost his family and friends. He’s been thrown into an unfamiliar and potentially hostile environment. Add to this the fact that he’s never really had a girlfriend, and I’m sure you can see how new relationships would be difficult.

Mary, his love interest, is strong-willed. With only women living in her compound and with a constant fear of disease, interactions are discouraged, even forbidden. She has never even met a boy and is confused by her feelings for Taylor. This often leads to misunderstandings and, at times, distrust.

Mary and Taylor’s relationship is far from perfect. They have different upbringings and conflicting desires. They aren’t always nice to each other. Oftentimes, they act in ways that may come off as cold or even mean. In my opinion, this makes them more real.

If you’re looking for a breezy romance, where everything is flowers and fireworks from the start, The Only Boy may not be right for you. If you enjoy complicated stories, however, books in which the characters have to work through their problems and fight for their right to be together, maybe you should give The Only Boy a look.

Were you always good at English?

Honestly, English was not my best subject in school. When I was younger, I never, ever thought I would someday be writing novels.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I had an idea for a scene for a book or movie, wrote a few pages and stuck it in a drawer. Four years later, while listening to a radio show about books, the ideas started coming, and I HAD to write them down. In a couple of weeks, I wrote the entire plot.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I write at night and on the weekends. Most of us writers have day jobs.

Do you work to an outline or plot, or do you prefer to just see where an idea takes you?

I have a very rough idea of a plot and characters and just start writing.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

About a year—a few months for a first draft, and then six to nine months of editing.

Tell us about the cover and how it came about.

I’m a graphic designer in my day job, so I designed the cover myself. The idea, a graphic depiction of rows of females and only one male, came to me while I was writing the book. When I designed the cover, I added the teenage boy holding the page to give it a human touch.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Definitely. It’s a potential reader’s first impression. Of course, it’s the writing that’s going to convince them whether or not to buy the book.

How are you publishing this book and why?

My agent was unable to sell The Only Boy to major publishers (many of them had overfilled their quotas for dystopian novels), so I decided to publish it myself.

What would you say are the main advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing versus being traditionally published?

Advantages: You have more control when you self-publish, and you can get your book out really quickly. Disadvantages: You have to do everything yourself (design, edit, market, etc.), and your chance of success is much, much lower.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Persistence is key. Keep reading, keep writing and keep learning the craft.

Book Review ~ ‘Soul of the Universe’

If you are looking for a great anthology on a day where you want to escape into a fictional world, well then ‘Soul of the Universe’ is perfect for you. A collection of six unique short stories by four equally talented writers, ‘Soul of the Universe’ was one of those anthologies that will always make me smile. The range of genres that these stories encompassed, and the way that they were all tied together into this collection by the powerful inspiration of music, was so clever.

Each story holds a special place in my heart, as in some cases, it is the first time that I have delved into that genre of fiction, and I can think of no better way to have entered these universe than through the talent of these four authors.

To Ride the Wind Dancing by Michael S. Manz, was a really intriguing read that introduced me to a new style of writing that I’m already hungering to read more of. At first the style surprised me, but as I continued on I adored the way that the author only spent words on the necessities which made my imagination work all the harder. It also made me feel as though I was part of the story, as I wasn’t constantly bombarded by scientific terms (which my A-Level Biology teacher will tell you would have me running in the opposite direction), and felt as though the setting of the story was my own, and not altered by too much description. I loved the two main characters, and was excited to read that this may not be the end for these two amazing individuals (and that hint of romance? Perfect. Subtle, but grin inducing!)

Having read Michael Wombat’s works in previous anthologies, I knew that the two stories he composed for this collection was worth getting excited about. ‘Blood on the Ground’ is my first forage into an almost Country and Western style of genre, and with the way that the prose just flowed so naturally, I was hooked immediately. I really admire how this author is able to bring me to feel for characters that I have only known for a few pages. My heart was stolen by Rence’s horse Red, and I loved the adventure they took, and am not ashamed to admit that I sobbed for Red at the end of the story (He was just so lovely, OK?)

Michael Wombat’s second addition was the amazing ‘Moth Girl vs. The Bats’. Wow, just wow! I sped through this story, so engrossed in it that I forgot about the outside world. I’ve heard of the growing Steampunk genre, and love the whole concept, but had yet to delve into reading it. I can safely say I am now addicted! This story was so clever, and Michael so wonderfully entwined all the components of the story, leaving me desperate for more. It was honestly a masterpiece, and Michael Wombat should be known as a Literary Genius!

The more emotional of this collection came in the form of Michael A. Walker and Marissa Ames’ stories. I had read ‘Darrion’ by Marissa Ames previously, but this didn’t stop me from re-reading this story again. I just adore everything about it. The meaning behind the story, the heartbreak, the fear, the fantasy element woven throughout subtly, yet meaningful is just stunning. To see the review I wrote for Darrion previously, see here.

Michael A. Walker’s talent with words had me sobbing through his stories. In the shortest of stories, he is able to have me so connected to his characters that I feel bereft to leave them as I finish the story. Michael’s devotion to his characters just seeps through the page with how he presents them and tells their stories. In ‘Stella’ we see an old woman who cannot remember who the man dying in the room by her is, despite them having been married for over sixty years. Her story managed to be heart-warming, even as my heart ached for the couple who had so many years together and were finally being pulled apart by age and illness. The flashback to Stella’s life growing up, and her courtship and marriage to Walter, the dedication they showed throughout their life was so beautiful, and made the realisation that Stella was suffering from Alzheimer’s all the more heartbreaking. Fans of ‘The Notebook’ by Nicholas Sparks would love this story with the same intensity that I did.

Lastly, but by no means least, Michael A. Walker presented another absolutely beautiful, poignant, heart-breaking piece called ‘Light On’. Laura was an absolute inspiration. The devotion she showed for her husband who had been named ‘Missing in Action’ for a year after fighting in Afghanistan. This story shows the harsh reality of the pain that those who are left behind feel when their loved ones are named casualties of war. ‘Light On’ just set alight every emotion in me, and I wished more than anything for a happy ending that I knew in my heart could never be. The fantasy elements interwoven in the final scenes was perfectly done, and had my heart beating hard and tears growing in my eyes. This story holds a very special place in my heart, and I know that this will be one that I will re-read again and again.

This collection was absolutely breathtaking, and has introduced me to some new genres I wasn’t overly familiar with, and showed the extraordinary range of writing styles that all bring their own meaning to a story. I’ve also discovered some new songs and artists and reminds me of the power of music as inspiration.

5 Stars!

At the theater, we bought popcorn, Milk Duds, and large sodas. After we settled in our seats in the crowded room, I opened the box of chocolate caramel confections and dumped them in the large tub.

“Um,” Quinn said, scratching his chin.

“Sweet and salty—it’s a must-have for movie watching.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes, seriously.” I picked up a Milk Dud, flanked it with two pieces of popcorn, and then brought it to his lips. “Here. I guarantee you’ll fall in love. You’ll never watch a movie without them again.”

“If you say so. . . .” He dragged the sweet and salty mixture into his mouth but kept my fingers enclosed between his lips. I held in a gasp while he ran his tongue over my thumb and then sucked on my forefinger before releasing my hand and chewing what remained.

“Agree,” he said around a mouthful of popcorn. “Wouldn’t want to be without them ever again.”

Quinn’s gaze latched on to mine. It felt like a bundle of feathers had been let loose in my stomach. “Guess you’ll have to come to every movie from now on. So I don’t forget.”

Speechless wasn’t even the word for what I felt in that moment. Dumbfounded might have been more like it, or maybe just struck stupid, because I couldn’t even move my lips to form any coherent words.

When the movie previews began, he turned toward the screen and reached for my fingers, interlacing our hands. Then he leaned close to my ear and said, “I expect you to feed me just like that the entire movie.”

FINAL4

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been putting stories on paper for as long as I can remember. My first efforts were illustrated with crayon and affixed to the refrigerator with alphabet magnets. I spent several years seriously focused on poetry. All very emo. Why are you running away? Stop. Come back. I promise I won’t make you read it. I pricked my finger on the Happily Ever After three years ago and I’ve been under the romance spell ever since.

Where do you find inspiration?

All around me? Plot bunnies nibble my ankles when I’m eavesdropping in line at the grocery store, watching the news, skimming twitter or listening to a song on the radio. I’m always open to the potential for story.

Tell us about your book and how we can get it.

THE OPPOSITE OF NOTHING is a contemporary new adult novella full of dirty IMs, angst, and achy sweetness.

Callie Evans would rather hide out in her DJ sound booth than face the fact that she’s in love with her best friend, notorious campus hottie Tayber King.

Tayber turns hooking up into an art form–no drama, no commitment, no lies, and nobody gets hurt. Nobody but Callie, that is. When she sees an opportunity to explore his sexier side using a fake online profile, she grabs it. Now her uninhibited alter-ego ‘Sasha’ is steaming up the screen, and Callie is breaking all of Tayber’s rules.

As Callie and Tayber get closer, online and off, she knows she has to confess. And risk losing him forever.

You can find it on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks.

What are you working on now? What’s next?

I have a few irons in the fire. There’s a secret project I’m super excited about. It is smokin’ hot and will be announced very soon. I’ll also have a short story set in the Copeland College world included in a charity anthology available in June. The anthology, SUMMER RAIN, will benefit RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and feature works from Ruthie Knox, Molly O’Keefe, Charlotte Stein, Cecelia Tan, Mary Ann Rivers, Amy Jo Cousins, Audra North, Alexandra Haughton and me. I’m so excited for this anthology it’s a wonderful cause and an amazing group of writers. Oh, yeah, and this fall, I’ll release another Copeland College novella.

What is the best book you’ve read in the last six months?

That is such a hard question. I read so many amazing books that picking a favorite is nearly impossible. I recently read HE’S COME UNDONE by Theresa Weir and it just killed me. It deals with all the issues I love exploring: Identity, Mistakes, Awkwardness, Old Hurts. And it has so much humor. Laugh out loud funny is so hard to do, especially in the middle of an angst-fest. *hat tip*

Shari

Shari Slade

Shari Slade is a snarky optimist. A would-be academic with big dreams and very little means. When she isn’t toiling away in the non-profit sector, she’s writing gritty stories about identity and people who make terrible choices in the name of love (or lust). Somehow, it all works out in the end. If she had a patronus it would be a platypus.
