I wrapped my hands around the railings, iron framing my view as I watched them. I rested my forehead between the cold columns, feeling like an inmate forced to see the world from the inside.

I stiffened.

I flipped to all fours, squeezing my eyes shut as though I could scrunch out what was happening, and crawled to the balcony door.
Please don’t have zoom capabilities.
“Charlotte! Why aren’t you with your boyfriend! Who’s the lady with him?”
Door. Get to the damn door.
“Charlotte! Charlotte! Char—”
Slam.
I shut the French doors, transforming the sounds from below into muffled murmurs, almost nonexistent.
And if I were to be honest with myself, I felt pretty nonexistent right now, too.

“Honey,” Dad began.
“You had to walk one day, and you’re scared? You killed a dozen infected and walked away without a scratch. We hit a parked truck at fifty miles an hour and barely noticed. Why are you suddenly opposed to Red Hill?” I was trying to remain calm, but with every point, my tone got higher.
Tavia clasped her hands together. “We’re all scared—”
“Then, stay!” I said, my voice transitioning to a weird chuckle even though I found none of what they were saying funny. “You don’t have to come with us. But our mom is waiting for us at Red Hill, and that is where Halle and I are going.”
“Not today,” Dad said.
“Then, when?” I asked again, emphasizing each word.
“When I say,” he said, sounding final.
I laughed once without humor. “I’m not asking to go to the mall. We’re talking about Mom being alone without us! She’s waiting for us! Do you honestly think I care that you’re”—I used my fingers to make quotation marks in the air—“the dad right now?”
He stomped over to me and leaned into my face, taking me back to a time when my parents had still been married. “You’d better start caring. Just because it’s the end of the world doesn’t mean I won’t whip your ass!”
Tavia pulled him back, and he flipped around, picking up a pillow and throwing it against the wall.
She eyed Dad warily. She was now seeing the side of him that Halle and I were used to, a side that I had been waiting for since this began.
“Andrew, maybe you should take a walk and see if you can do anything more to secure the house.”
Dad turned to her, his face severe. The skin between his brows had formed a crevice, as deep and as dark as his anger in that moment. His hazel-green eyes burned bright against his olive skin. Just when I thought he would start yelling again, he left the room.
Tavia took a deep breath and held her hand to her heart. “That was—”
“Typical,” I grumbled.
“You fight like that with him a lot?”
“We used to but not lately.”
“He gets pretty mad, huh?” she asked, glancing at the closed door.
“He has a temper. He’s working on it—allegedly.”
“Is that why you want to get to your mom so bad?”
My eyebrows pulled in. “What would you do if you were separated from Tobin?”
She blinked.
“She’s my mom. If I scrape my knee, I call for her. If I’m sick, I ask for her. If I’m scared, I cry for her. If there’s an apocalypse, I’m going to the ends of the earth for her.” My eyes and nose burned. The sudden emotion surprised me. I wiped my cheek and sniffed, staring at the floor. “It’s forty miles. We can make it.”
“We…we don’t know if Tobin can make forty miles. Who knows how long that would take on foot?”
“It doesn’t matter if we waste time here. What were you two talking about? How to convince me to stay? For a few days? For a week? Forever?”
“No.” She shook her head. “We’re just worried about the little ones being able to make it that far. We need a car—or at the very least, a way to carry the supplies. I can’t hold Tobin all day long. I can’t run with him. It’s too dangerous to try.”
“I like you, Tavia. I’m not trying to be mean, but no one’s asking you to come with us. If you want to stay here, stay here.”
She was taken aback. “I know, but we can’t do this alone. We need one another.”
“Brad will leave eventually for Shallot. You need my dad to stay.”
“It’s not so different. You need him to leave.”
“But he’s my dad. I’m not going to give up on seeing my mom again because you can’t travel with Tobin.”
Tavia’s sweet smile fell away. She wasn’t being confrontational, but she did have the look of a mother bear protecting her cub. “Halle can’t make the trip either. You would be risking her life if you go, especially if you try something as ridiculous as leaving without your dad. We’re the adults, Jenna. He’ll listen to me.”
I took a deep breath and lowered my chin. Tavia was pretty intimidating. I thought about what Mom would say when I told her about this conversation later. She would want me to fight. She would want me to do anything I could to get Halle and me to Red Hill.
“My dad and I have had our ups and downs,” I said, keeping my voice low and steady. “But if you try to make him pick between you or me, you’ll lose.”

Book Review ~ ‘Patch Up’ by Stephanie Witter ~ 5 Stars!
There are few words I can use to express how much I loved ‘Patch Up’ by Stephanie Witter. As a psychology graduate I have a weakness for stories that really delve into the inner depths of a character’s mind, and giving the reader a unique opportunity to see how people who have undergone trauma struggle through their everyday life. ‘Patch Up’ did this beautifully, and I really loved getting to know Skye and Duke, and seeing how the relationship they formed made their scars come to the surface and helped them heal.
Skye was a heroine that I think many readers will have to warm to, but I connected with her straight away and really loved her character development right from the first page. Stephanie Witter had Skye’s character pat-down and didn’t falter in her portrayal of a girl who was in a deep depression. I really liked Skye’s cold exterior to start as it heartbreakingly echoed the desperate need she had to keep to herself, as forming attachments can make you vulnerable.
Now Duke was my kind of hero. Charming, passionate and stubborn, but hiding a darkness inside him that comes out when someone gets too close. My heart broke for Skye when Duke talked harshly to her, and I really liked seeing how his harsh words became less of a barrier between them as Skye becomes stronger and more focused on helping Duke through his grief. The give and take in their relationship was wonderful to watch and I loved seeing how both characters developed into humans capable and less afraid of love and attachment.
This book contains some very distressing scenes of abuse which Stephanie Witter handled perfectly. It is heartbreaking to read what Skye’s ex-boyfriend did, and continued to do to her even after their relationship ended, and it just made me warm and root for Skye all the more.
This was a beautiful yet heart-wrenching book which I know will resonate with a lot of people. Wonderfully written and perfectly paced, this is a book not to be missed.

“My car’s over here,” Alexis said, leading me to the other side of the parking lot.

Suddenly, all I could think about was how I’d like to distract her now. First, I’d tangle my fingers in that long, thick hair, getting a good hold of it. Then I’d tilt her head back so I could press my lips to her neck, to that spot just below her ear. She’d moan my name, and I’d work my way down, lower and lower, dipping inside the V of her shirt to taste every inch of skin I’d seen earlier. She’d reach for the front of my jeans and—
Whoa there. None of those things could happen. I could not get involved with Alexis again, and the only way I’d get through the night was to banish those thoughts entirely. Why was she even bringing all of that up again? Earlier she’d mentioned wanting to catch up, and now she was flat-out hitting on me. Did she want to get back together or something?
We stopped at a black MINI Cooper with white racing stripes across the hood. Not a car I’d ever picture her driving. Hmm, maybe she had changed.
“Nice car,” I said. “Not much room in the backseat, though.” Wait, why had I said that? It’s like I couldn’t stop myself from flirting with her, either.
“I bet we could still fit.”
Her eyes swept over me again, and it took all my energy not to press her back against the side of the car and devour her. I was so, so tempted to make a move, even though it was a terrible idea. Being around Alexis was causing my brain to not function properly. I wanted to blame my growing hard-on for rendering me stupid, but that wasn’t the entire reason. All the memories of being with Alexis, combined with seeing her again, were turning me into a sentimental fool.
I cleared my throat and tore my gaze away. “Let’s just find Becca, okay?”
“Sure,” she said, but she sounded disappointed. Hell, I was, too. I wished I was more like Jared and could do random, meaningless hook-ups, but that wasn’t me. If I got a taste of Alexis, I would only want more and more. I had to stop this now before it went any further.

Book Review ~ ‘Not Yet’ by Laura Ward ~ 4.5 Stars!
What a gorgeously beautiful read! ‘Not Yet’ is yet another New Adult book that I would highly recommend you add to your ‘to-read’ list because what a read it is!
This book is a really beautifully crafted piece of work and I really admired the thought and feeling that went into this story. There are some books where the emotion just seeps off the page and this book was definitely one of them, you could feel the emotions of the characters, sympathise with their inner torment and really root for them as you see them develop into better people throughout the course of their journey, which is stunning to witness.
Emma was a fantastic heroine who I really liked getting to know throughout the book. The hard and judgmental girl we see at the beginning of the story is just a mask that I loved seeing her shed throughout her journey. The care and devotion she shows to her sister was just heart-warming and it was almost like I saw faith in humanity again after I was reminded of how many kind-hearted carers there are in this world who ask for nothing in return for their time and love.
Landon was a top book boyfriend for me. I really loved seeing his progression throughout the book. The relationship he develops with Emma, as well as her sister Evie was just so heartbreakingly beautiful that I felt myself tear up at times. To avoid spoilers I’m being purposely vague when I say, I adored how he remained strong and faithful throughout his and Emma’s trials, and never gave up hope or on their love.
I always love books that feel real to me, and ‘Not Yet’ brought in so many everyday elements, as well as issues in society that I really connected to the story. Having characters that had psychological and developmental illness was so unique in this kind of book and it really added something to the storyline and the characters, making me root for them more.
The only thing that keeps me from giving this book 5 stars is the pacing to start with. During the first thirty percent of the book I felt the summer storyline was getting a bit repetitive, and I was just waiting for something else to happen. When the twist finally happened I almost screamed with excitement because it was so out of the blue and finally got the story going. I feel that the twist could have come a lot sooner in the book and it would have had the same effect without the summer storyline dragging on a little too long.
Nevertheless this is a solid 4.5 Star read, with a definite recommendation from me. Heartfelt, beautiful and unique, this is one story not to be missed.
