The girls stayed until four in the morning, and they only left because, according to our neighbors, we were making too much noise, which was true. We made chocolate popcorn, watched a tearjerker movie, and then sat on the back porch and talked—and laughed and yelled—for a long, long time.
“Thank goodness, Ryan told you about what happened,” Sophie said.
“Poor guy,” Rachel said. “He hasn’t been the same since you left.”
Slimy, thick guilt took over my heart. It hadn’t left me by Sunday evening or Monday morning, and it was because of that guilt that I called Mama in the afternoon and asked her to bake a special Devil’s Food cake. After work, I stopped by the house to retrieve it, and then drove back downtown.
I parked the truck behind the Mustang. As I expected, the garage was open and Ryan was leaning over the Harley in the same fashion he was a week ago. Damp hair, bare back, jeans, and boots.
I swallowed. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to come over after all. Before I could chicken out, Ryan turned around and saw me. His eyes widened at first, then narrowed into thin slits. He stood from his crouch as I opened the truck’s door and walked inside the garage.
“Hi,” I said, feeling incredibly lame.
“Hey.” He grabbed a towel from one of his toolboxes and wiped his hands.
“I-I brought you this.” I extended the cake toward him.
His eyebrows shot up. “Devil’s Food cake.”
“Yes. It used to be your favorite.”
“It still is.”
“Good.” Seeing as he wouldn’t take it from me, I stepped to the side, and left the cake on one of the worktables.
Ryan stared at me, his hazel eyes completely lost, and I returned the stare. I wasn’t sure what I was doing, but I wouldn’t back down. I would be here for him, even if he didn’t want me to.
I sat down on a stool next to his bike. “So, why haven’t you finished this one yet?”
He picked up the black shirt over one of the toolboxes, hiding his incredible physique, then crouched between the bike and me. “I did spend quite some time away.”
Damn, couldn’t I have touched a lighter subject? “Sorry,” I whispered.
Ignoring my apology, he continued, “Besides, I like working on it. If I finish too fast, I’ll have to find another one to play with.” My gaze shifted to the other bike, to his racing bike, destroyed against the wall. “I didn’t fix that one after the accident. It’s a good reminder of how stupid I can be.”
“Sorry,” I said again.
He shot me a hard stare. “Stop apologizing, Jessica.”

Book Review ~ ‘After the Rain’ by Renee Carlino ~ 5+ Stars!
My original review consisted of ‘Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful!’ as I was so overwhelmed by how beautiful, heart-wrenching and special this book was that I didn’t feel that any review I wrote would do it justice. I still think the same so I start this review begging everybody to just go and read this amazing book, as it is definitely not one to be missed.
‘After the Rain’ is a book that just has to be experienced yourself for you to understand its power. I started this book in my lunch hour at work, and I was so engrossed in the heartbreaking storyline, and the beautifully developed characters that I really struggled putting it down to go back on my shift. From the start, Avelina became a character that I not only sympathised with, but who I connected with on such a deep level that my heart broke along with hers as she has to face the future without the man that she loves.
Renee Carlino did such a stunning job at introducing us to these characters, and it was this that made them feel so real to me. Jake’s descent into depression and eventual emotional blackmail to Avelina was all the more heartbreaking for me having witnessed Jake before his accident. Similarly seeing Avelina’s slow recovery and her slow developing trust in Nate was made all the more real after having seen the loving relationship that she and Jake had once had. Seeing that Jake was onve as loving as you could imagine is what made Avelina’s heartbreak more believable.
Renee Carlino developed Nate and Avelina’s relationship with absolute perfection. The way that Avelina begins to return to life after Nate pushes for a friendship was just so wonderful to read, and I had tears in my eyes more than once. I loved seeing the development that their relationship had not just on Avelina, but also on Nate, helping him see that there are other ways to live your life than being devoted to your work, and that there is no shame in not reaching perfection.
Avelina and Nate’s story is a emotional one, but it is one that has stayed with me on so many levels since I turned the last page. You will laugh and cry in earnest, but ‘After the Rain’ will leave you looking at the world anew.

I managed not to sneer, since I really did like Rose most of the time, and I didn’t want her to see how annoyed I was that she was swooning over Declan Curtis.
After all, it wasn’t like he was so drop-dead gorgeous that a sensible woman would turn into an idiot. He was attractive enough, with those golden looks of his, but I hadn’t seen anything else to impress me.
“Do you not like him for some reason?” Rose asked, evidently catching something in my expression.
“I don’t know him. I’ve only seen him around. But Lily says that he’s not really teaching them anything.”
“It’s first grade.”
“I know it’s first grade, but that doesn’t mean the day needs to be wasted on frivolous activities. There’s a lot kids need to learn during that year, and it’s not right if this guy isn’t taking it seriously.”
“I’m sure he is. He’s just probably one of those teachers who can turn learning into such fun that kids hardly notice they’re learning.”
“Lily knows if she’s learning or not.” I let out a breath, telling myself to be patient and not jump to unfair conclusions. Maybe he was easing into things, and he’d start buckling down soon.
He’d had more than a week now, though, and nothing had changed in the classroom, according to Lily.
“Maybe she’s learning things and doesn’t realize it.”
“Or maybe he’s just treating teaching like a game. Like it’s not really important work. Teaching isn’t easy. Not just anyone can do it.”
“I know that.” Rose smiled in a particular way. “You’re really riled up. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this riled up before.”
“Yes, I’m riled up. Teaching is important. First grade is important. And it shouldn’t be thrown away on an overgrown kid, no matter how sexy he is.”
The momentum of my words had caused me to step back and raise my voice slightly. Then I noticed Rose’s expression change, and her eyes shifted to something over my shoulder.
I froze, realizing immediately what her distraction meant. Someone else was in the office.
When I turned to look, I saw Declan leaning against the doorframe with his typical leisurely confidence. He had a half-smile on his face.
I was momentarily overwhelmed with mortification, wondering how much he’d heard and if it was obvious I was talking about him.
I didn’t like the man, but I never would have laid him out right to his face.
Then he gave me a little wink, evidently caring not at all about what he’d just overheard.
I sucked in an indignant breath and turned away. The man was absolutely infuriating. Didn’t he take anything seriously at all?

“Do you want to stir the cheese sauce while I do the pasta?” Dare asked.
I was watching him work from across the counter—a safe distance from the food, but close enough I could enjoy the view. Him cooking for me was so freaking sexy.

By eight, her mother would have tucked Eroica into bed. She’d stayed too long with Bianco, grooming and petting the white stallion. In fact, she yearned for the idyllic life she’d shared with Morgan. She’d been a princess, living in a fairytale spun by her beautiful lover. She hadn’t chosen this lonely existence.
