Book Review ~ The Wild One by Janet Gover ~ 5 Stars!

If you are looking for a wonderful feel-good book which will capture your heart, then this is definitely the book for you. Janet Gover has created a wonderful set of characters, both primary and secondary and a beautiful community in Coorah Creek which made the story feel real and relatable.

There are two things that I find difficult to read about, and they are anything to do with the holocaust, and animals dying or being killed, so straight away I felt a really strong connection to the trials that our main characters faced, and I fell in love with Quinn. She was feisty, confident and such a likeable heroine. The pain of her past was something that haunted her, and I really enjoyed seeing how she began to move on from her demons, and accept love into her life again. To see how she and Dan healed each other in their fight to save the Brumbies was so beautiful, and as the animal lover I am, I really liked seeing how the animals brought all the characters together.

Carrie and Justins story was no less beautiful, and I really enjoyed how the story split between the four characters, yet still gave us the same depth of emotion and story development for each of them. I have to say I laughed quite a lot at Justin, particularly at his thoughts about the horses in his care seemed to focus on their breeding, and it just showed how well Janet Gover created such multi-dimensional characters who were all so different, but brought together to fight for the same cause.

Beautifully written, this is a strong, character driven novel which brings us back to Coorah Creek and its inhabitants. Although this is the second book in the Coorah Creek series, it can still be read as a standalone, as it focuses on separate characters to those in the previous book.

5 Stars!

Marquel’s Dilemma

A Romantic Thriller

(Includes Adult Content)

By Emily W. Skinner

Marquels Dilemma

WLK synopsis

SPOILER ALERT To avoid spoilers, it is advised to read the first novel, Marquel, before reading Marquel’s Dilemma.

Marquel’s Dilemma

The dramatic conclusion of Emily Skinner’s first novel Marquel brought requests from readers to continue the story.

Marquel’s Dilemma begins three years after the actress Marquel’s tragic past has been exposed by tabloid journalist, Mark Collins. The media exploitation of her life brought a new responsibility. She would become a voice of hope for others, not as the actress Marquel, but under her married name.

Zach Manning, Marquel’s psychiatrist, lover — and now husband — made a huge mistake in protecting her. Unbeknownst to his wife, Zach asked for a favor, not weighing the consequences. Now Collins is back for revenge. The first time it was his job… now it’s personal!

amazon

WLK excerpt

The unvarnished truth was that Zach was a lonely, middle-aged, divorced psychiatrist when Marquel entered his life. Their sessions had been a mix of tears, anger, darkness and sexual tension. Loving her was the biggest risk he had taken since opening a practice in Beverly Hills. He understood the consequences, but broke his professional ethics for a second chance at love.

He was mesmerized by her. Rumors of a nervous breakdown were just surfacing in the gossip magazines and it was his job to keep her functioning. It was a constant struggle, trying to keep up with the demons that were haunting her.

The car door opened and her gorgeous smile sent his heart racing, as it always did. Its appearance had been so rare in their early days.

Did you have a good session? He could see her eyes were red.

She picked up the flowers and kissed him sweetly on the mouth. You always do the right thing.

He pulled her in for another kiss, this one lingering.

I dont know what Id do without you, her finger circled his mouth and she gave him another light kiss before buckling her seat belt. You make everything right with the world.

He never felt this way with Isabel. His ex never had the look of love in her eyes when she spoke to him. This was the happiest hed ever been with a woman.

Emily W. Skinner

Emily had a goal when she was 15, she would have a daughter named Marquel and write a novel titled “Marquel.” She accomplished both and more.

A member of The International Thriller Writers, Emily was a protege of the late master of the pulps or paperback originals, Harry Whittington. Emily interviewed Whittington during her days as a feature writer for the Clearwater Sun daily newspaper and its weekly division. They became friends and he taught her how to plot and gave her approval of the original outline and sample chapter for “Marquel” shortly before he died in 1989.

After Whittington passed away, Emily challenged herself to write as her mentor did and wrote a chapter a day and finished the novel “Marquel” in 52 days. For more details on the novel’s history read:http://www.thefilmmom.blogspot.com/20…

Book Review ~ ‘How I Wonder What You Are’ by Jane Lovering ~ 5 Stars!

Jane Lovering is an author to watch out for, not only does she create engaging characters and brilliant settings, but she manages to infuse such warmth and humour throughout her stories, which make them such a joy to read.

‘How I Wonder What You Are’ is a book that I was unable to put down. From the word go I was immersed in the Yorkshire landscape and the village life that Molly had escaped to. Being from a small village myself, I could see so many similarities and it made the reading experience that much more richer, as the world Lovering created just felt so real.

Molly was the perfect heroine. I love how Jane Lovering didn’t create a character who was just so likeable, but instead gave her a real depth and character flaws that made her so much more believable as a person. To see her overcomeflaws that she felt had controlled her life was really inspiring, and I really enjoyed her accepting her faults and trying hard to move on, and learn from her past experiences. I really felt for her when the truth about the breakdown of her engagement came out, and I was firmly on Team Molly throughout.

Phinn was just the icing on the cake, so to speak. I have a weakness for nerdy guys (probably as I’m rather nerdy myself), and Phinn was the perfect guy for me to swoon over. Jane Lovering did a fantastic job at developing Phinn’s character throughout, as I could see the progress he was making at every turn, and seeing it through his own eyes was so rewarding. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a female reader who won’t want to give Phinn a huge hug.

Infused throughout was some brilliant humourthat fit so naturally with the story and characters. Link was hilarious, yet also so multi-dimensional that he wasn’t just a character thrown in to add humour, but one who really helped the pace and development of the story. His reaction to Phinn’s shame over his alpha-male behaviour in bed was brilliant, and it was these little tidbits that made the story what it was.

And notsince Flynn Rider and Maximus have I loved a bromance as much as that of Phinn and Stan. Classic!

Book Review ~ ‘Material Girls’ by Elaine Dimopoulos ~ 5+ Stars!

‘Material Girls’ is on my list of favourite books of 2015. I mean, seriously – WOW! What a stunner of a book! The emotion and feeling that came across in this book, alongside the realistic depictions of everyday challenges that teenagers face, was just overwhelming in how perfect it was.

I’m ashamed to say that knowing it was a book aimed atyoung adults, I wasn’t expecting ‘Material Girls’ to resonate with me, but boy was I wrong. Elaine Dimopoulosbrings to the story a level of maturity and reality that it can be difficult to find even in adult books. Everything about the world that Dimopoulos created, the characters and their daily trials with the regime, the system that they accept without question, and the underlying feeling that maybe not everything is as OK as it seems, all brilliantly mirrors a greatdystopian story. But as well as that, this story is just so much more.

The use of materialism and fashion as the focus point of ‘Material Girls’ was so unique and exciting. Everyday we are bombarded with billboards of new fashions which likely won’t last over a couple of months. Dimopoulos has heightened this, and with it heightened the risks that such a consumerist society has on others.

Marla was a fantastic character who I loved from the get-go. I really felt for her, seeing as how her innocence and naivity were used against her, and how her eyes were opened up to the real workings, when she is unfairly dismissed. Seeing her come to the realisation that the company she has placed all her trust in, and devoted her life to has not been worthy of it, was really exciting, and I loved seeing how she developed throughout the course of the novel, and how she formed such meaningful relationships with her new colleagues, compared to her old ones. Her sweet, and desperate character was brilliantly contrasted by Ivy, who was just as exciting to see develop, especially when we see the differences that having supportive friends around can have on the overall outcome of their story arc.

And Felix…what can I say about Felix other than that he is the best. *fans self* Kind of in love with him. OK, a lot in love with him!

5+ stars for this amazing book. This is an all-time favourite of mine, and I know that adults and young-adults alike will fall in love with Marla’s storyas much as I did!

Book Review ~ ‘Take a Chance on Me’ by Debbie Flint ~ 5 Stars!

Wonderfully romantic and superbly written, ‘Take a Chance on Me’ is the perfect sexy and heart-felt novel to while away an evening with.

Straight away I connected with Sadie. She was fun and cheeky but professional, making sure that nothing would come in the way of her making the best for herself and her two daughters. She was a hugely original heroine, and she felt very real and human. Her motives, hopes and dreams were all understandable, and I think Sadie’s story will resonate with a lot of female readers.

Mac was just pure indulgence on a boat. I loved seeing the innocent in love side to him at the beginning of the story and to witness his change into a businessman with rules alongside Sadie, and getting the added insight of what was going through Mac’s mind, and how he was really coping with the predicament he found himself in, was so great. I loved his development throughout the course of the novel, and I fell for his bad-boy businessman self knowing the sweetheart that was beneath it.

The way the business side of the story developed was brilliant. I am quite possibly the most inept business minded person in the world, but the way that Debbie Flint managed to mix the business deals and terms in the story, keeping them realistic and easily understandable to me as a reader, shows what a talent is.

A delightful book to read, and I hope to see more from Debbie Flint in the future!

Book Review ~ ‘Letters to the Lost’ by Iona Grey ~ 5+ Stars!

I cannot think of any words big enough to describe the pure emotion and adoration I have for this book. Iona Grey has created not only a beautifully crafted dual love story, but has infused it with such tenderness, heartache and inspiration that Stella and Dan’s story will stay with me for years to come.

Stella and Dan are from very different lives, and seeing their relationship develop through the letters that young Jess discovers and the flashbacks to 1943 were simply beautiful to read. I fell for them immediately, and my heart ached to know that their happy ending was out of reach. I was desperate to know what had become of these two people who loved each other so much, and for them to finally reunite. Through her part in trying to reunite Stella and Dan, Jess’ happiness soon became my own, and I fell in love with the broken girl who began to blossom with Dan’s caring emails, and Will’s attentive nature.

Both the present day scenes and those of 1943 were written to perfection. Everything about the period felt real, and I could see, smell and feel every place that Stella visited in war-time London. I felt her love for Dan as if it were my own, and wanted more than anything for her to escape her painful marriage and for Dan to beat the odds and survive his term as a pilot, so they could live their life together.

The outside world tries to pull them apart, but with Jess’ intervention, we see that maybe love can last forever.

A stunningly romantic story that had me in floods of tears, whilst denying it to those witnessing my emotional breakdown….Nope those aren’t tears, nope not crying, I just have an eyelash in my eye…or a hedgehog….

But all Aimees plans come crashing down when the private jet thats taking her from the U.S. to the ranchwhere her fianc awaits herdefects mid-flight and the pilot is forced to perform an emergency landing in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

With no way to reach civilisation, being rescued is Aimee and Tristansthe pilotonly hope. A slim one that slowly withers away, desperation taking its place. Because death wanders in the jungle under many forms: starvation, diseases. Beasts.

As Aimee and Tristan fight to find ways to survive, they grow closer. Together they discover that facing old, inner agonies carved by painful pasts takes just as much courage, if not even more, than facing the rainforest.

A gorgeousbook from Layla Hagen.

Withering Hope was a stunner of a story. I always know I’m going to get a book that knocks the socks off me emotionally when I read one by Layla Hagen, and ‘Withering Hope’ is no exception.

Aimee and Tristan’s story was an inspiring one. I always enjoy seeing how characters react psychologically to stress and unexpected situations, and seeing the hardships that Aimee and Tristan go through, as well as the positivity they cling to and portray to each other, was in turns sweet and heart-breaking.

Tristan was the perfect book boyfriend. I really admired him for his strength, and his determination to do right by Aimee and his boss, and not to take advantage of the situation. To see him promising Aimee that he’d do anything he could to return her to her fianc was so bittersweet as we can see just how much that promise may cost him. I loved how their relationship simmered slowly, and came at a gradual and natural pace. I never once felt annoyed at Aimee for her devotion to her fianc, and it was because of Layla Hagen’s brilliant set up where we becoming introduced to them through Aimee’s memories and you can see just how much they loved each other.

I absolutely adored this story. I cried, laughed and then cried again. Layla Hagen did an outstanding job at developing these characters throughout their traumatic experience, and made me really admire those who are in a fight for their life every day!

*sobs* My God, that was just…so damn amazing…cannot think! Speechless! *sobs* And that ending? Are you trying to kill me??!

*composes self*

‘Manwhore’ by Katy Evans has just made its way to my top favourite book of 2015. As a writer myself, I am insanely jealous of how Katy Evans has created such an incredible story, flawlessly mixing emotional and heartfelt scenes with great snippets of humour that made the story fun, real and oh so heartbreaking!

‘Manwhore’ tells the story of a young journalist, Rachel who loves writing more than anything. She is devoted to the failing magazine she works for, and desperately wants to save it from collapsing. In writing, she feels strong, and wants to spread so much good through her pages.

Now Malcolm Saint may ruin you for all other men, real and fictional. Since finishing this book, I have been wandering listlessly around, bemoaning the fact that Malcolm Saint will never walk into my life *sobs*. I loved the transformation he made throughout this book, and it broke my heart to see the hurt he hides behind a strong, sarcastic facade. Him and Rachel just complete each other, and I can’t wait to see how their relationship continues in the next book.

I swear this book has turned me into an addict! Fun, sexy, heart-warming and suspenseful, this is a must read!
