May 8, 1966

This afternoon I was working on my latest novel when I happened to notice today’s date. First, I should explain that my WIP is about childhood, baseball and murder, though not in that order. This new novel–tentatively titled Murder on Linden Way–is set in 1966 Baltimore, and the action unspools over course of the baseball …

Lady Sleuths and Female PIs

I’m one of those people who’s always signing up for book giveaways, and the other day I finally got lucky! I won a copy of of Laurie King’s latest Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes mystery, Island of the Mad. For the uninitiated, Mary Russell is Mrs. Sherlock Holmes and a detective in her own right. Though I’ve …

Murder Comes to Elysium now available for preorder!

PI Addie Gorsky is still struggling with her father’s death when a friend asks her to look into the sudden death of his niece, Elena. The young woman died minutes after being discharged from Tender Mercies Psychiatric, one of the darker places in the Sunshine State.

Addie agrees to this small favor, despite Elena’s death from anaphylactic shock appearing like nothing more than a tragic accident.

Soon, Addie uncovers small discrepancies in Elena’s untimely death. Even more troubling is Elena herself, not the inexperienced college student described by her uncle, but a woman with a dark secret.

When a second person dies at the Mercies, Addie discovers a connection between the two deaths. A connection leading back to one of the most heinous crimes in Florida’s history and the horrific poisoning of seven small children.

Suddenly Addie finds herself in a deadly chess match with an unseen opponent, a grand master of murder always one step ahead. Somehow, she must find a way to defeat this ruthless killer before another life is lost.

Murder Comes to Elysium Book Cover

Here’s the new book cover for my latest novel, Murder Comes to Elysium. It’s got a retro  noir feel that is appropriate for this latest Addie Gorsky mystery, a story as dark and twisted as a cypress tree on a moonless night.

Laura Lippman in Gainesville!

Meeting with authors I admire is like a big-old jolt of inspiration, and I got a Venti Double Shot of it yesterday when Laura Lippman spoke as part of the ongoing Author Series at the main library.

I’m a great admirer of Laura’s fiction, and it was a real pleasure to meet her. In my opinion, she’s one of the best novelists in any genre. Her plots are intricate works of art and her characters, though not always likeable, are complex and believable. It was a real pleasure meeting her and I left on Cloud 9.

When she signed my copy of her new novel Sunburn, she also included the best advice one writer can offer another:

Keep Writing!

You bet I will, Laura.

Happy New Year!

Here’s hoping you didn’t overdo the celebration last night, but if you did overindulge, take heart: hangovers don’t last forever, they only seem as if they do. Drink coffee and eat some spicy food (I recommend huevos rancheros) and you’ll be back in the saddle in no time.

However, if you were foolish enough to make a New Year’s resolution or two, I can’t help you. Resolutions made on New Year’s Eve rarely make it to Three Kings Day so either avoid them altogether, or make sure resolution is user friendly. Last year, I resolved to drink my way through every local brewery in Gainesville, tasting every IPA, Imperial Stout or lager I could get my hands on. As it happens, our little town currently had three excellent craft breweries so I haven’t yet hit my goal, but I intend to keep trying.

Here’s hoping 2018 is good to all of us.
