FFS…

I just did a word count of Book 5, and I almost gave myself a seizure…

Roughly 475,000 words.

I could have split it in two (maybe I should have), but I felt that there really wasn’t a good place to split it. I mean, there is a place that could serve as a decent ending about 3/5 of the way through, but the remaining 2/5 would be left in a very awkward position due to where the next book would have to start.

I also planned Book 5 as one book, so splitting it up doesn’t feel right in terms of how...

Fetch (Flash Fiction Fridays #72)

Alicia picked up a stick. “Hey, Spot, do you want to play?”

The dragon perked up. “Sure!”

Smiling, Alicia drew her arm back and then threw the stick as far as she could. “Fetch!”

BOOM.

A bolt of flame struck the stick and obliterated it.

Spot wagged his tail happily. “I hit it!”

“…” Alicia blinked. “Um… Spot, you’re not supposed to do that.”

The dragon’s brows furrowed. “But you threw something into the air for target practice, right?”

“No.” Alicia picked up another stick. “Watch what Chomp does...

Not even a nibble… (Flash FIction Fridays #71)

The field mouse emerged from its burrow and screeched to a halt. There was a giant, winged reptile staring right at it. For a moment, the mouse considered trying to flee, but every instinct in its body was screaming that escape was impossible. All it could do was accept the inevitability of its demise…

* * *

Spot turned his head to look at the field mouse. The little animal was frozen in terror, staring at him as if he was the single most terrifying thing it had ever seen.

That was probably true...

Crashing the Party (Flash Fiction Fridays #70)

The adventurers had been hired to take down the troll that had been menacing the village for the better part of a month. Thankfully, nobody had died yet, but livestock had been lost, and the villagers had been unable to tend to their crops.

The villagers had pooled their money and hired the adventurers to deal with the troll. Now, given their limited funds, the adventurers were not at the pinnacle of their profession. However, they were a team of four with a decade-long track record of mostly su...

FFS…

Be me.

Eat a slice of buttered bread during lunch.

Hear a crunchy noise.

Wait… buttered bread isn’t crunchy.

Don’t think about it.

Realise that maybe you ate something weird by accident.

Poke around in your mouth.

Feels weird.

Contort yourself to check an upper right molar in the mirror.

Uh oh.

Realise you’ve either broken a filling or chipped a tooth.

Dental appointment on Tuesday.

No pain or bleeding, so I’m really hoping it was filling.

FFS.

Different Genre (Flash Fiction Fridays #69)

The young man sighed as another braggart sauntered over and sat down in the chair opposite him.

“I hear that your sword is quite mighty. However, you will be no match for my Star-Splitting Sabre.”

The young man took a moment to size up his would-be opponent. He was still a young man, but he had already waded through an ocean of blood before being leaving his homeland. He was in the midst of wading through another ocean of blood for the sake of his new home. Naturally, he had developed a keen and...

Two Necromancers, a Fortress, and a Titan: Chapter One

The problem with pig blood was how horrible it smelled when it went off and how quickly it could spoil on a balmy evening. On the upside, getting several buckets of the stuff was easy in the Mercantile Alliance. All it took was a quick trip to the local butcher. Unlike human blood, there was no need for murder.

Well aware that his pint-sized apprentice was staring at him as if he’d lost his mind, Timmy dipped his paintbrush back into the bucket and scribbled another doodle on the wall. This p...

A Reward…

For persevering with all the delays, how about a reward?

I will be posting Chapter One of Two Necromancers, a Fortress, and a Titan either later today or tomorrow. It is roughly 12,900 words. Note that the chapter itself is basically the final version (just need to proofread it a tad more for typos etc.).

Patrol (Flash Fiction Fridays #68)

Palladio stood silent sentry over the village. Patrols were a regular part of training for the ninja rats, and regular trips through the local villages ensured they remained familiar with possible battlegrounds. Black Tower Castle was a nigh-impregnable fortress. Its position atop a massive outcrop of rock made it all but impossible to attack using mundane methods, and its magical defences were the equal or better of any fortress in Everton. Lord Timmy had also cleared the castle’s immediate sur...
