The Climb
The young man reached down to help the old man to his feet. They’d been taking more and more breaks recently. “Come on. We need to keep moving.”
The old man smiled and leaned back against the boulder. “No, kid. You go on ahead. I think I’ll just… enjoy the view.”
“What?”
“I’m just about done. I think… I think this is as far as I get.” The old man grinned crookedly. “Oh, don’t give me that look. You know I’m right. I’ve bene slowing down more and more lately, and I can’t get going the way ...

Things I’d Tell My Younger Self As A Writer
If I could go back in time to when I first started to take writing more seriously, there are definitely some things I’d say to my younger self.
Prepare to suck. A lot.
Improvement is hard, and it takes a while. Sometimes, it really takes a while. The worst thing you can do is to give up halfway, so you need to be prepared to suck. A lot. It’s so easy to get discouraged early on when progress can come so slowly and feel so difficult, but you’ve got to stick with it. I know I’m glad I did because ...

Progress Report 12-06-2020
Well, it’s time for another progress report to let you guys know what I’m doing at the moment.
I’m happy to say that work has begun on a followup to The Hungry Dragon Cookie Company. It will be another collection of short stories although I’m not sure exactly how many will be in it. I’m guessing between ten to fourteen depending on how long they are. I’ve gotten the skeletons drafts (super rough first drafts) of the first four short stories done, so things are chugging along nicely for the time ...

Forget Writing Software
Every now and then someone asks me about what sort of writing software I use. The truth is that the only writing software I use is Microsoft Word. That tends to surprise people. After all, there is a whole market out there full of products that claim to help writers reach their full potential. In my opinion, though, most of those products don’t help much at all. In fact, I have the sneaking suspicion that some of them do the exact opposite.
But why do people devote so much time to choosing the ‘...

Surviving Quarantine Is Now Available On Amazon
In the grim darkness of the future, there are only wars over toilet paper and the laughter of hungry drop bears. Seriously, though, I’m pleased to announce that Surviving Quarantine is now available on Amazon here. It covers the first eighty days of a hypothetical Australian quarantine. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned, and the virus isn’t that easy to contain, nor is it the only danger.
You can get Surviving Quarantine from Amazon here. And don’t forget that Two Necromancers, a Bureauc...

Character Pairings (Not Those Kinds Of Pairings…)
It is perhaps unfortunate that the term ‘pairing’ is often used romantically when applied to characters. Today, though, I’ll be using it a little differently. When I say that two characters make a good pairing, I mean that putting them together usually results in good things for the story. Here, I want to talk about what makes certain pairings good.
Characters are one of the most important parts of a story. True, there are stories that can survive having poorly written, uninteresting characters,...
