Close Encounter (Flash Fiction Fridays #52)

This snippet is based on something I’m working on for Book 5. It is a flashback of sorts set before Book 1.

Millie bit back a curse and turned to stab at her opponent with her pitchfork. The paladin was better than her with a weapon, but she’d spent a considerable sum of money improving her own skills recently. There weren’t many people who actually used a pitchfork in combat, but there were people who used spears or tridents. Supposedly, there was an old guy wandering around who’d mastered the...

When You’re Enjoying A Book

There are times when I’m reading something that I’ll find myself slowing down, just so I can really savour it. When a book is really good, I don’t want to finish it quickly. I want it to last forever.

I’ll go back and reread the same passage multiple times, so I can get a feel not only for the words themselves but also for the cadence and flow of the text. Every now and then, I’ll even read something aloud for a bit because it’s the kind of passage that begs to be read aloud. But when I really...

Duel (Flash Fiction Fridays #51)

Katie took a deep breath and prepared herself. This was it. She had finally been challenged by another student at the Academy. It had taken almost a month for someone to work up the nerve, but here she was in the duelling arena. Everyone else had already fought at least twice. Was it because she was a war hero, or was it because she was a necromancer?

Whatever the reason was, she was ready. Her opponent was another girl. Evelyn was supposed to be extremely skilled with both her sword and her mag...

Provisional Schedule

I have gotten a lot of questions about what my schedule will be like in the coming months/year. Although I can’t make any guarantees, I’m basically going to be aiming to write books in this order:

Unconventional Heroes Book 5 => Cosmic Delivery Boy 2 => Unconventional Heroes Book 5.5 => Attempted Vampirism Book 4

There will also be stuff that I’m working on during all of that, side projects that may or may not eventually see the light of day depending on how they end up looking.

Anyway, that’...

Dream A Little (Flash Fiction Fridays #50)

A crossover for #50.

Ancient vampires did not dream the way regular people did. Instead, their memories drifted through oceans of thought and memory as their minds did what was necessary to stay sane despite century after century after century of life. But sometimes, their minds wandered past the endless labyrinths of sensation and experience and reached out through the void, waiting and listening.

Most of the time the wait was pointless. Even amongst ancient vampires there were few who could c...

Student Life (Flash Fiction Fridays #49)

“Have you worked out what you’ll be doing for the upcoming trip?” Amelia asked.

Tabitha’s brows furrowed. “Well… Lord Bolton did say he’d be handling it.”

“Ah.” Amelia nodded. “Well, if Lord Bolton said that, it should be fine.”

Tabitha giggled. “He does have a knack for getting things done.”

It was funny how much things could change. Tabitha had started attending the Academy almost a year ago. The thought of attending the most prestigious educational institution in the country had been more tha...

Siblings (Flash Fiction Fridays #48)

Katie snickered as Spot slithered over and settled his head onto her lap. She gave the back of his head a lazy scratch and traced the pattern of ridges that had grown more prominent over the past few weeks. Would Spot grown horns? Maybe. It wasn’t unusual for dragons to have horns. However, it wasn’t unusual for them to have crests or frills either. Without knowing more about his mother, it wasn’t really possible to say how he’d end up.

Her master glanced away from the scroll he was studying and...
