Morphing Magic – Vestige of Credence 14 (Love Fantasy Books Series)

Vestige of Credence: Chapter 2
Part 14: Morphing Magic

“My name is Lailie, and I mean you no harm. I only brought you here in this manner to be sure you were not of evil intentions. I have gleaned information from your thoughts in these short moments, and I see there is much on your minds. I am sorry you were consumed by the abyss, and I wish there was something we could do to stop the quakes. The ground quakes and land shifting have been just as costly for our people as they have for your own, if not more so–” Lailie began.

“Your people?” Kadden interrupted, “How many are there like you?”

“There were millions, but lately our numbers have diminished. We are not creatures that die of natural causes. Actually, we did not even realize life could come to an end. We have existed down here together as long as we can recall. Then when the planet started shaking, our world started coming apart. Our many complex tunnel systems have been disjointed. The death toll is uncertain, as not all societies are reachable now; but many people, and even towns, have been crushed beneath falling rocks during the land tremors.”

Lailie suggested they head to Olcanic, the capital city of her people. During their walk, Ellara and Kadden quickly discovered that not all areas of the tunnel were submerged under water; there were actually pockets of air, like in the sky. It was a strange and unthinkable concept that for their entire existence the Basalt and Cumulus never knew air or creatures were hidden in the ground beneath them. “My people are the Graphine, derived from the name graphite which is the rock most like our skin” she explained, making big gestures with her hands as she spoke. “We have a special connection with rock; with land, you see” Lailie ran her hand along the smooth rock wall as she spoke.

“You speak of the land and the rocks like they can think and you can understand them” Ellara commented in response to Lailie.

Lailie brushed passed the comment as she continued to introduce the new comers to her world. Her skin was so dark, yet glimmered. It also seemed to change texture. Lailie caught Kadden’s observant eye on her skin “It is a natural defense system. We can walk around in our softer skin, but if necessary we can morph.”

Kadden tilted his head “Morph? Into what?”

Lailie chuckled “Not into something. Our skin can morph to be tough. It turns into graphite.”

Magic Abilities – Vestige of Credence 13 (Love Fantasy Books Series)

Vestige of Credence: Chapter 2
Love Fantasy Books Series Part 13: Magic Abilities

Finally, she seemed magically to appear out of the wall in front of them. It took them a minute to make out her figure against the rocky wall. Kadden and Ellara could not help but stare at her, because she was like nothing they had ever seen. Her form was of some human origin, but her skin was tough and solid like rock. She had no hair, just a smooth, solid head. Her figure was tiny, a bit smaller than the average female Homo Aquatic Sapien. She had strange eyes that differed from the Basalt. The Basalt typically had solid white eyes with no variation. For whatever adaptive reason, this creature’s eyes were white but were narrower with pointier ends. Curiosity festered in Kadden as he tried to comprehend what he was seeing in front him. He had to wonder what she was and where she came from. Had she spawned somehow from the planet changes caused by the unbalance?

Suddenly she said, “No,” leaving both Ellara and Kadden confused. “No, I was not created by the recent planet changes.” It was as if she answered what he was thinking in his mind. “Yes, I did answer your thoughts,” she said. He was speechless, this was nothing he had ever imagined to be possible.

“If you know what I am thinking, then why have you been interrogating us?” he demanded.

She explained that her abilities were mild, and she needed to encourage a line of thought by proposing questions. She was not capable of just retrieving any kind of information from people. It had to specifically be something present in their current thought processes. Ellara had been speechless for some time, still just staring at the new creature.

No Magic Games – Vestige of Credence 12 (Love Fantasy Books Series)

Vestige of Credence: Chapter 2
Part 12: No Magic Games

Slowly gaining consciousness, Kadden tried to see his surroundings, but could not. Discovering lack of movement within his arms, now bound by restraints, he was aware something had gone wrong. He could vaguely feel pain in the back of his head when he began to realize he had experienced a lapse in time. He could only remember walking through the tunnel with Ellara, but had no idea what happened after that. As he tried to regain composure, he was startled to realize he heard someone else near him. Kadden knew how to defend himself and quickly crouched into a squatting position then slung his leg out creating a circular swoop in the general direction of the noise. His leg brought something to the floor, and he heard a crash, shortly followed by a catty, “Is that all you got?” He realized it was Ellara.

“Are you okay?” he offered immediately, realizing his mistake.

Ellara assured him quickly “Calm down, I am just fine. You aren’t as tough as you think you are.”

He defended jokingly, “Well you aren’t as clever as you think—”

“This is no time for kidding, Kadden,” she interrupted. “We need to move fast to get free. Maybe we can help release each other.”

Working as a team, Ellara bent down while Kadden released her blindfold, she then did the same for him. Before any further plan could be developed between them, another voice quietly whispered, “Why have you come here?” They glanced around in confusion and searched for a figure but found none, when the voice came again. “Reveal your purpose, surface people! I have no patience for games.”

Kadden replied that they were searching for the deepest trench when a ground quake sucked them down a rift. The voice announced that he had revealed nothing about himself or his intentions within the trench, and that her patience was dwindling. But Kadden refused to reveal anything else until he knew who he was speaking with. For all he knew, she could be a Cumulus, which can easily shift in and out of visual form.

3 Reasons to Love Beauty & the Beast & are You Inspired by Disney?

3 Reasons I Love Beauty & the Beast

Hello Friends!

In honor of the new Beauty & the Beast release (I might be a little excited), I want to share some thoughts.

My husband was so kind to take me to see it on opening night at Disney Springs (see some pictures below). The animated version captured my heart as a little girl and Emma Watson is a big inspiration to me. Personally, I really enjoyed it. Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, and the whole cast are so talented, I thought they did very well. The film was beautiful on an artistic level and entertaining. I don’t want to say too much online, but I will say this Beauty and the Beast fan was pleased.

For me, great books and movies are more than just entertainment, I like to ponder what they made me feel and consider what stands out in a meaningful way. Below are three top reasons I love Beauty & the Beast in general (the cartoon and movie). And I included a trailer, in case you weren’t already drooling to go see it. =-)

3 Reasons I love Beauty & the Beast…

I adore and relate to Belle’s love of books! Reading and writing are such vital tools for personal and relational development, so I love seeing a fairytale heroine avidly reading stories.
Belle’s gown is yellow and gold, a color scheme which is a favorite of mine (perhaps because yellow is symbolic of happiness, hope, and optimism).
She looks at the world through the lens of inner beauty (there is an awesome life lesson there). And in the Beauty & the Beast story, we see the characters learning the important lesson about not to judge a book by its cover. These concepts are very dear to me. I’m a big believer in looking for the good in people. It seems like when we try to find the good in ourselves and others, we pull those good traits up out of hiding and keep them alive, verses pulling out our bad qualities.

Why I’m Inspired by Disney…

On the topic of Beauty and the Beast, I thought I’d also discuss fairytales and Disney a little. Some of us may be bigger Disney fans than others. Some may not be much into Disney at all. Whatever the case, I can speak for this fantasy writer… I love Disney. I would absolutely attribute much of my love of fairytales to Disney stories that took me to other worlds and touched my heart over the years. And really, isn’t that what good fantasy stories do? They look at life from a new perspective. So, I thought I’d share a little Disney love in today’s post (hover over the images below to scroll through my Disney Pinterest board).

What’s in the Tunnel? – Vestige of Credence 11 (Love Fantasy Books Series)

Vestige of Credence: Chapter 2
Part 11: What’s in the Tunnel?

After a debate and time spent brainstorming what tools they might have to help them elude their situation, they decided to just investigate the walls in hopes of finding an area they could climb. It was then that Kadden remembered the giant holes and unusual cracks he previously noticed in the walls. His gut suggested they were worth further investigation, so he walked next to the wall, heading in their direction. Ellara, unaware of the giant rock holes, followed him, hoping to find a slope to the top. Finally they were located just beneath a hole. Ellara now had taken notice of it and was curious, as well, as to what it might be. They knew the possibility of climbing out of the depths was slim, so Kadden waited while Ellara swam upward to inspect the unknown crevice.

She was astonished to see it was more than just a hole; they had discovered a tunnel. The other end of the tunnel was nowhere in sight and neither of them could imagine what might have made it. Obviously it had not been formed by the land quakes like the trenches had. There was something else creating the long tunnels. It was tall enough to fit four people standing on each other’s shoulders, and so wide it could squeeze twenty people side to side. They were able to spot the other side of the tunnel far across the trench in the parallel rock wall; clearly, they had been connected before the ground quake.

They proceeded slowly and with great caution.

“Could the tunnel be some new planet phenomenon similar to the land quakes? It just seems like it was plowed and intentionally made,” Ellara thought out loud.

It in no way resembled a cave because the stone seemed carved out. The unknown scared them both as they pressed on. It wasn’t long before Ellara noticed something odd on one of the walls. It looked at first like scratch marks, but with a closer examination she determined it might be letters of some sort. It appeared someone had written on the walls. Evidence was stacking up that the tunnel was no natural occurrence, but that left the duo no clue as to what might have made it.

“Maybe the Rainda made this tunnel?” Ellara asked hopefully, despite knowing that was a slim possibility.

“Ellara, they have only been in the trench a couple years. Can you really imagine they would have had time or ability to make a tunnel like this that quickly?” Kadden questioned.

Ellara dropped her head. “Well, no,” she replied.

“And we both know these markings are not Basalt. There is something else down here,” he added.

The suspense built as they continued creeping through the foreign area. They were moving farther through the tunnel when suddenly something struck them swiftly, knocking them unconscious.

Sucks Being Stuck – Vestige of Credence 10 (Love Fantasy Books Series)

Vestige of Credence: Chapter 2
Love Fantasy Books Series Part 10: Sucks Being Stuck

Kadden and Ellara quickly helped themselves to fresh crab when they awoke, as they reminisced about life before the unbalance. Lack of conversation had taken its toll, and they both longed for a break from the stress. They had grown up together in the same village. They discussed the traditional festivals and she teased him about the male Chaelim, a kind of formal robe he was forced to wear during the dances. “Those robes are the most boring thing anyone ever had to wear! Ha!” Ellara exclaimed. Thinking of home, she felt as if she could almost taste rebhia juice, she wanted it so badly. “I wish we could just drink some rebhia juice and enjoy the Arryl festival right now,” she lamented.

Kadden nodded his head in agreement. It was nice to laugh again, and for a small time they forgot all about their given mission, their circumstances after the big ground quake, and about finding Eva. They simply enjoyed a meal together and shut out reality. But as the laughs began to die down, it was inevitable they face the potentially impossible swim back out of the trench. “I would prefer a shark fight over being trapped down here,” Kadden commented. He ran his fingers over the azzile chain latched to his belt.

The ground split had taken them down so fast; they had not been able to attach their azzile chain to anything before descending. The chain had actually been developed from Cumulus technology and allowed for almost infinite release. It was very strong and had been designed to pull things long distances, almost effortlessly. The azzile chain was of no use in this circumstance though.

“I wish we could just swim out,” Ellara declared. “But the wall looked too smooth for stopping points.”

“Yeah, there is no way we can make it all the way back up there,” Kadden agreed.

Vestige of Credence 9 – The Abyss (Love Fantasy Books Series)

Vestige of Credence: Chapter 2
Love Fantasy Book Series, Part 9: The Abyss

Thankfully they were still wearing their dark thermal suits or they would have surely frozen to death. Though their temperatures had remained stable, they were tossed about on their way down, leaving them disoriented. The land quake not only sucked them down, but it pulled them so far there was no sign of an easy way out. Being ocean creatures, the Basalt were decent swimmers, but never had the endurance for extremely long distances. As they were pulled farther down, the walls around them were smooth, showing few signs of holes or climbing aids at all.

Debris crackled beneath Kadden as he slowly shook his head for clarity. Lying on his stomach he began to push himself off the ground. “Curse Terryl!” he muttered as a broken seashell poking out of the sand sliced his hand.

“You know I don’t like it when you say that,” Ellara rolled her eyes. “I always said if it weren’t for your cursing, you could be the perfect gentleman.” She reached out and plucked some debris from a green streak in his brown hair.

“Eh, if it weren’t for your nagging, you would be the perfect lady,” he defended in his normal teasing manner.

After regaining full awareness and assessing the situation, they decided making camp for the night would be best. Tired from an exhausting long day, Kadden surveyed the area around them. There was debris-like seaweed, coral, shells, and some crabs, strewn about from the same quake that sucked him and Ellara down. The rock walls were dazzling and smooth. As he was drifting to sleep he also noticed some abnormally large holes scattered in the rock wall, but his mind escaped to rest before he could think more of it.

Vestige of Credence 8 – Moving Ground (Love Fantasy Books Series)

Vestige of Credence: Chapter 1
Love Fantasy Books Series, Part 8: Moving Ground

Before they could even imagine appropriating the teleportation device to begin their search, they would first have to assemble a group to help on the mission. They themselves had been appointed by the elders for the mission to locate Rhen the Cumulus. Rhen had been an ambassador for years between the sky and ocean people. He had offered his allegiance to the Basalt from the start, and it was decided he could best help by remaining with the Cumulus as a spy. It was thought that he could help them gain access to the Iffanport. The help of Rhen would have to wait until the group was ready to venture into Cumulus territory. He would be their informant on Cumulus plans. But their first assignment was to locate the Rainda Basalt, Niomi.

Niomi would be a challenge to find because some of the Rainda race migrated to the bottom of Viaoli (the deepest ocean trench) when the quakes first started, shortly after Ludan’s forces began to strengthen. They reasoned the farther they got from the skies and Cumulus, the best chance for survival they had. Niomi had hoped to stay in Luap and help the races, but when her parents decided to enter the trench, she felt responsible to watch over them. Circumstances now left no choice but that they would have to ask her to leave the trench to aid in efforts of finding a new race. Having traveled to the Cumulus realm before the war, Niomi had trained with the Cumulus scientists and learned of their technology in depth. She was really the only chance the Basalt stood of reaching Cumulus territory and operating the teleportation device. It was their hope she could show them how to get to the sky territory and show them how to work the Iffanport.

The ever-changing landscape added time to their journey, but Kadden and Ellara hoped to come upon the trench quickly. They were relying heavily on being able to spot an occasional glowing sucker octopus as an indicator of nearing the trench. As the rifts were torn deep into the ground, ocean species like the sucker octopus were drawn to the dark, deep waters located in the trenches. They were hiking as fast as they could, but striving to stay near the thick seaweed patches in case they might need to hide from more scouts. Sometimes they swam to reduce the monotony of the trip. Most often they hiked and struggled to keep balance as small ground shaking occurred. Then, as their traveling progressed, the land quakes completely stopped. But in the next moment the ground began to split apart everywhere. They both reached and grabbed frantically about them hoping not to be sucked into the gaping holes that were forming. Kadden briefly caught hold of a thick kelp as Ellara clung to his leg, but he quickly lost his grip and they were violently yanked down into the abyss.
