Vestige of Credence 23 – Cumulus Race (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Part 23: Cumulus Race
“It’s not the worst idea,” Ellara chipped in. “I mean, we need to start figuring out how to win this fight.”
Kadden pursed his lips and stared at the group impatiently.
“I’m just saying,” Ellara defended, “let’s hear him out.”
“Yes, I like the way she thinks… Let’s hear me out,” Anvid agreed arrogantly. “Now, what about using our elusa nets? Let’s just toss one on the Cumulus and see if we can’t figure out how to kill it.”
“You can’t capture or kill a Cumulus. Don’t you think we have tried?” Kadden argued.
“Ah, yes. But I see from your thoughts that you don’t know much about electricity and nothing about elusa. I have a good feeling about this,” declared Anvid, “and what have we got to lose? If it doesn’t work, we use your sound guns.”
Though Lailie was indifferent to the idea, Kadden was out-voted by Anvid and Ellara. Equipped with the elusa masulk, the situation was a perfect opportunity to see if electricity could work against the Cumulus. It was a very thin, net-like material formed from the elusa substance found in the Lizab river. Just like the regular elusa emitted tiny shocks, the adapted elusa masulk did as well. It was a risky plan, because it had not ever been tested before. But if anything would stand a chance of confining the spirit creature, electric shocks and currents seemed like the best bet.
Lailie, being armed with both rock wall camouflage skin and swifter motion than the others, was chosen to throw the net. She climbed to the top of the tunnel and a little closer to the Cumulus than the others, where she waited. It would be Kadden and Ellara’s task to act as bait walking down the tunnel, while Anvid and Mij stayed behind as back-up. After assuming position and signaling for action, Ellara and Kadden began walking in the direction of the Cumulus, speaking loudly as if in disagreement. The Cumulus turned quickly, but approached so slowly, she didn’t appear to be attacking. Lailie threw the net, and it worked. For the first time during the war, a Cumulus had been captured.
As Anvid looked in her eyes, attempting to extract the forefront of her thoughts, he sensed her fear, sadness, and loneliness. A part of him did not care what she seemed to be feeling inside, because he knew she was a Cumulus and he could not fathom how any member of such a loathsome race could have emotions. He wished he could have just killed her and not even bothered with a net, but of course that was not possible, so he stared at her with hate instead.
“Why have you come to the underground” Lailie inquired, hoping to trigger a very insightful train of thought.

Vestige of Credence 22 – What to Do? (Love Epic Fantasy Books Series)
Part 22: What to Do?
They were about half a day from arriving at the trench, when the company came upon a disturbing discovery. Lailie and Anvid detected another thought presence not far in front them, so they began to approach slowly and with caution. All they could interpret of the thought process was that it was a single creature who was scared. It was only a matter of minutes before they finally caught sight of the mystery creature, and they immediately recognized it as a Cumulus. It was unusual for a Cumulus to be out by itself, unless it was a scout. But, even a scout shouldn’t be venturing into the trenches. Perhaps Ludan had concocted some new plan.
The small group was highly curious as to why the creature had come into the trench in the first place. Basalt would usually chase off Cumulus by use of their sound guns, which were filled with capsules that made a piercing sound upon firing. The Cumulus were particularly sensitive to high pitched sounds and could not tolerate them. Chasing the Cumulus off with the sound gun was the group’s first thought.
“Or…” Anvid trailed deviously, “we could try to capture it.”
Ellara and Kadden stared in disbelief. “You only just found out that these highly dangerous, immortal creatures even exist,” Kadden paused, raising an eyebrow, “and now you want to capture one?!”

Vestige of Credence 21 – Eyes Wandered (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Part 21: Eyes Wandered…
Shortly after their exploration, the team all decided to take a brief nap before departing for the trench. After their bodies were rested, their belongings were packed, and the Dragile was prepared for flight, it was time for them to set forth on their journey. The Dragile flight was an entirely new experience. Ellara managed to enjoy herself, but Kadden did not react well to the feeling of flying. His stomach seemed to be turning in circles, and the feeling reminded him of sickness after eating old food. For the beginning of the trip, he kept his eyes closed and occasionally jerked his hand to his mouth, fearful he might heave.
They sat in a typical Dragile carrier attached to Mij’s back, like the Graphine always did. Mij was the fastest flyer of the Dragile species. He always had been pleased to deliver messages between the Graphine and to offer his speed as service in any way possible. Flying the group and being asked to join the mission was a great honor to him. Dragile were not capable of speaking, but they could communicate. Through Graphine teaching, the Dragile had actually learned to write. In fact they loved writing (or in their case etching with their sharp claws) and drawing so much that they often decorated the tunnel walls for a pastime. Mij was not particularly gifted with writing or drawing, but some of his species had developed the most famous artwork known to the underground world.
As they neared the trench, their minds were all focusing on different things.
Observing the emotion in Ellara’s eyes, Kadden inquired, “Are you thinking of Eva?”
She dropped her him sluggishly to her side and let out an unintentional sigh, “Like usual.”
He nodded his head and let his eyes drift away. Sometimes words weren’t as meaningful as silence. The silence lingered on embracing Ellara for a brief rest.
Kadden’s eyes had wandered to Lailie. He made an effort not to think of her, but was not succeeding. He found her divine and wise, but he did not want her to know how often he thought of her, yet it was difficult to hide. Meanwhile, Lailie tried not to read anyone’s thoughts, but was sometimes aware of their minds, and she felt her cheeks blush red when Kadden thought of her. Lailie thought he seemed like a nice man, but it was so strange encountering a new species face to face. Though she, too, thought of him often, she tried to focus on the mission.
Anvid was still trying to sort out his feelings and opinions about all the information Kadden and Ellara had provided. He was astonished at the magnitude of the trials facing them, but his darker side relished the adventure before them. There had always been a small part of him longing for more than just a life of training Dragile and he wanted to see what challenges the world might hold for him.

Vestige of Credence 20 – Fallen Immortality (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Part 20: Fallen Immortality
Meanwhile, Ellara continued exploring the town. She was most taken aback by the culture of the people.
“I wish the elders could see this place” Ellara told Maximus.
“Your elders?” he asked.
“Yes, our leaders” she expounded. “They have lived long and learned the most. The elders sent Kadden and I on our mission. We are protected and guided by them.”
“Yes” Maximus nodded his head, remembering what he had gleaned in her thoughts. “Even though I am considered wise and am respected as a leader, our culture highly promotes equality, individuality and freedom.” He gestured pointing out their homes “You see, all of our homes are the same size.” He continued to explain the equality of their culture as her eyes scanned the many homes that lined the cavern walls.
“Our people were created from a clash of lava and graphite mixed with water ages ago” Maximus explained. Ellara suspected nobody had ever proved that was true. He continued to say they were all so old, they could not remember the beginning of their lives. They did know for sure that, until the land quakes, not a single Graphine had ever died.
They all participated in contributing to each other’s needs and lived very peacefully. The concept was interesting to Ellara. She was surprised to discover the Graphine didn’t seem to have very established gender roles. Ellara came from a society where generally women would help grow food and make clothes, while men would hunt food and build structures. The Graphine all contributed in every way to society. It was their belief that the only way they could all truly understand one another and live peacefully was through empathy. He said it made their people very connected.

Vestige of Credence 19 – A Peaceful Place (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Part 19: A Peaceful Place
The dark color of the rock walls surrounding them made the electric glimmers even more brilliant. Kadden was so fascinated by the glimmers that he neglected to notice their arrival on the bridge until he almost stumbled off of it. Lailie caught his arm, pulling him back, and laughed quietly under her breath. She found his fascination with her underground home entertaining.
“This is so strange to me,” he confessed, as he slowly rotated in a circle observing their surroundings. Having at first been taken slightly off guard, he now observed around him in more detail, realizing that there was water falling out of some sections of the rock wall and lava falling down out of other areas.
Pointing up at a purple substance pouring from another gap in the wall, Kadden began to inquire, “And is that…?”
“…elusa,” Lailie finished his sentence. “Yes, isn’t it amazing?”
The elusa was astounding to look at. Somehow it didn’t move in one constant flow like the lava and water. Instead, it formed almost a weaving pattern crawling down the wall, resembling lace. It was a light purple color with occasional spots of gold, and it sparkled just like the mist around them.
What was most eye-catching was the sight beneath the bridge. Below them the Lizab River featured a stream of lava and a stream of water separated by rocks, and elusa flowing over it all like a translucent web. He had never seen anything like it. There seemed to be no living creatures in the cavern. Lailie told him that, as much as she loved its beauty, her favorite thing about the cavern was the peace and quiet. No creatures naturally inhabited the location, so she could spend all her time on the bridge thinking.

Vestige of Credence 18 – Electric (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Part 18: Electric
After providing details about the Dragile, Maximus restated that Lailie and Anvid wished to join Kadden and Ellara on their journey. Anvid had never been a particularly social man. He grew to love his time with the Dragile primarily because they were so different from the Graphine. Being a quiet yet forceful species, he felt a connection with them. He was known among the Graphine as a bit of a temperamental outcast, but still the finest Dragile instructor in the underground. His profile was that of a classic hermit: incredibly talented, yet socially disliked. Being called on to serve with the company gratified his need for aggression.
As they all talked more about the mission, they mentioned needing to find Niomi. “Ah, yes,” Lailie remembered. “There had been reports of surface creatures living east of here in the great trench. It should only be a day’s flight by Dragile, assuming the ground quakes do not interfere.”
They could not be sure it was the Rainda that had been seen, but it was certainly the best lead yet. In the short time before their departure, they decided to explore Olcanic. The beautiful intricacy of the city from afar was lovely enough. But as they walked farther into the city they found remarkably fascinating little creatures. There were small round, almost flat creatures of a purple color that would rest on the rock walls. Sometimes they would jump from the wall and slowly glide down to float on the lava, and they had dark orange and yellow hair sprouts out of their heads.
Lailie showed Kadden the legendary Lizab Bridge. The bridge was suspended over a lava river near town. It hovered about a mile above the Lizab lava river. She told Kadden it was the loveliest place she had seen living underground, but her description before they arrived there did not do it justice. He never could have imagined that something so amazing could be located beneath the sand he walked on his whole life. They walked a few minutes through water tunnels, and came to another air pocket area. They were out of the tunnel and walking only a couple of minutes through a large cavern when he noticed a mist and began to see glimmers around him, like little sparks were dancing in the air.
“What are these sp…” he trailed off, his eyes darting about to catch glimpses of the twinkles.
“Those are tiny electric shocks,” she answered. “From what understanding we have gathered, the atmospheric elements put off by the mixture of lava, water and elusa clash, causing electricity.”
The look on Kadden’s face was one of slight concern. “Electricity? I have only ever heard stories about it, but can’t that be dangerous?”
She laughed at him, “I guess that’s true. But those little sparks aren’t going to hurt you, they’re too small.”

Vestige of Credence 17 – The Dragile (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Love Fantasy Books Series Part 17: The Dragile
“Ellara,” Lailie softly spoke, “I have heard from your very thoughts of the nearly impossible and improbable things that could lie before us. But Anvid and I wish to offer our assistance on your mission. He is our highest ranking Dragile trainer.”
Being able to read their minds, Maximus knew immediately they had never heard of the Dragile before, so he elaborated. “The Dragile have been with the Graphine from the start. They have coexisted peacefully with us, and we are blessed by their companionship.”
They looked similar to reptiles, but also featured scales down their back. They were typically dark gray and orange in color. They could stand on their back two legs, but usually preferred to walk on all four legs. Dragile could spit fire, which had always been a tool-making and cooking asset to the Graphine.
“They are very docile creatures, other than when it comes to meal time,” he offered. “But we Graphine have never really been a menu option for them because of our graphite skin. And, as it turns out, the Dragile have a taste for lava larkas.”
“Docile creatures,” Ellara repeated in her mind with uncertainty. Staring up at the giant winged reptile with sharp teeth, she found that difficult to believe.
“They very rarely need to feed anyway, and when they do it is not difficult to track down larkas in nearby lava ponds,” Maximus continued. Lava larkas are the initial reason for creation of elusa nets, which the Graphine utilized in many ways. The Graphine never understood why the elusa was so harmful to the larkas, but those nets seemed to be most effective in trapping them.
The relationship between the Graphine and Dragile had been symbiotic for a long time. The Graphine could easily use their camouflage to spy and flush larkas into the open to be hunted by the Dragile. These species offered companionship to each other. The Graphine could not only use the Dragile’s fire to help with tool building and cooking, but long ago the two species had labored together to develop the speedy underground tunnels connecting all sub ground civilizations. Maximus mentioned also that Dragile can fly faster than the Graphine can walk or swim. The tunnels were big enough for them to soar through and carry Graphine on their backs. Ellara and Kadden then realized why the tunnels were so wide.

Vestige of Credence 16 – The Unbalance (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Part 16: The Unbalance
Ellara and Kadden soon found themselves seated in a large chamber. They could just barely hear Lailie speaking with others outside before they entered the room. “Lailie tells me many things about you, and she thinks maybe we can help each other,” stated a man not much taller than Lailie. He appeared to be a leader and wore only what looked like thinly crafted graphite pants. Lailie wore a similar short graphite dress that seemed to work well as camouflage when she transformed her skin.
“I am called Maximus, and I have led these people since the beginning. We have never struggled in all our years as much as we have recently while the land has been shifting. Some of our people say the planet is dying and these are the end of our days. We have contemplated what actions, if any, to take in an effort to save our lives. Until now, we didn’t even know what could be done. Your coming has enlightened us, and after discussion amongst other leaders we think it is in everyone’s best interest to help you.”
“How do you mean, help us?” Kadden responded.
“We know of your journey and what you hope to achieve” he replied.
Ellara replied with uncertainty, “Do you understand the details of our mission? It is likely we will not survive this quest. All odds are against us.”
“All odds are against you,” he repeated, a sad flicker in his eye and his chin brushing his chest as his head lowered. “My people have been against all odds for months now. Our world is crumbling and falling in on us. The very walls that have kept us safe for millions of years are now crashing down on our heads.” Maximus went on to describe the horrors in recent months and that they had no hope of surviving on their own.
From Ellara’s mind, Lailie had learned much about the Cumulus, the war, and—most importantly—the unbalance.

Vestige of Credence 15 – Lailie’s World (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Welcome to Emilyann Girdner’s ongoing fantasy story via her blog…
(click here to learn more about this series or start at the beginning)
Vestige of Credence: Chapter 2
Part 15: Lailie’s World
Lailie said the city of Olcanic was built purely of pyroxenite and dunite: pyroxenite, an uncommon ultra-morphed rock from the deep sea crust; and dunite, a rare rock that forms beautiful green crystal-like growths. Approaching the city, its beauty was unimaginable. Gleaming green crystals stood out brightly against the dark pyroxenite. The cool green and black colors clashed against the bright lava lake located below looming structures. The structures protruded from the rock walls to form curved and swirled shapes all nestled within a gargantuan cavern. The civilization stretched so far into the cave, it was impossible to discern how large it truly was.
The Graphine were swimming in the lava and going about their daily lives upon the visitors’ arrival. The cavern was located in a small air pocket. It blew Kadden’s mind as he searched for reasoning of how the planet Terryl worked, and what enabled this function of life. As Ellara and Kadden emerged for the first time in their lives to exit the water, their bodies felt lighter. Being water dwelling creatures, they found that the air felt strange. As the water which naturally soaked into their skin began to evaporate, it left their skin feeling softer and warmer. Ellara noticed the weight of her long silver hair become much lighter and fluffier within a matter of minutes. Ellara’s and Kadden’s strong Basalt bodies moved so easily and smoothly through the air it took them by surprise. The sensation of the gentle air around them was new and, for the first time, they discovered what it felt like to be dry.

“Tornado Warning, Check the Weather Radar!” Reflecting Over the Last 48 Hours…
[image error]
Those Days:
Sometimes we just have those days. I’m sure you know what I’m referring to there… Well, I’d say my husband and I have just experienced a couple of those days. I often jot down notes about life as I experience it in the moment, but occasionally I feel the need to not just jot down notes for myself, but share them. I’ve also been intentional about writing experiences when they’re raw, to process feelings at that time. That said, below is a recap of our last couple of days. And please note a couple of things before we dive in… this may seem like a laundry list of complaints at first, but the intent if you stick with me is to show that what could be received as a list of insurmountable craziness and frustration, can actually be a list of reasons to be grateful, or find hope, etc.
Update on the Last 48 Hours as I Started My Trip to Wizard World Comic Con in St. Louis:
Bad News:
On Tuesday (around 48 hours ago), my heart bled when receiving difficult news and updates on friends and family with very dire situations occurring in their lives. Logically, we know updates like these happen in life, but it never changes the cramping feeling in our stomach and feelings of helplessness that result.
Yet, I thought more deeply about how grateful I am for those people and what blessings and lights they are in the world. I paused and thought a lot about the many wonderful people I know, how grateful I am to have you all in my life and how it is my greatest prayer that no matter the circumstance, the peace of God will fill hearts in times of trial. Despite some hard news coming in and my heart hurting for others, everyone coming together to love each other in facing these hard times helped balance the helplessness with love and hope.
Technology Strikes Again:
My phone forced an update that managed to delete everything right before the big trip, which seemed like cosmic timing. My notes, my apps… you name it, they were wiped away. And yes, I had it all backed up supposedly on the cloud… it is a long story why that was all wiped too. :/ It truly did create big stress for us. It stunk, no pretending it didn’t. But it was interesting to me that it wiped the slate clean in a sense. I cling a lot to this phone (and need it on the road), but as I hurried to jot down what ideas I could remember from all of my writing notes, downloaded the vital apps, and got the phone all set up again, I thought perhaps this was God’s way of telling me which were the most important ideas to focus on? I don’t know for sure, but maybe. And yes, I ‘ll say that annoying phrase… perhaps this built character as I struggled between wanting to be angry with the representative telling me all my content was gone and trying instead to use it as a moment to love and show patience toward that person (who was of course not personally at fault).
Sickness Strikes:
Finally, we got on the road, but as we progressed, my husband got sick. For his privacy, I won’t go too much into this part of the last 48 hours, but it has been rough, he has had a lot of pain as we drove, and it has significantly impacted our travelling. It is difficult enough to personally deal with pain or sickness, but it’s harder to see someone you love hurting and uncomfortable. It is even more difficult to look at the situation and try to fathom, “a bright side.” I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what the bright side is of my husband’s illness as we’ve been on the road. Perhaps because he has been sick, it has impacted the timing of where we ended up or what else we encountered on the road. Whatever the case of it all, we kept chugging.
Tornado Warning:
We knew we might face some bad weather on the way, but the sudden tornado warning which forced us to seek shelter in Arabi, GA (near Cordele) was still alarming. I’m still reflecting on the heart-racing and scary (for me and many others… though my husband evidently smirks in the face of impending tornadoes) experience. Hiding in a plantation market store with many windows all around, outside the color of the sky turned to that of night despite it being day, giant hail rained down, and booms sounded around us. Some people began to hide in the bathrooms and pray as we could no longer see much out the windows and the storm was just so loud. We joined others in the safest rooms in the building, wondering how bad it would get. It was a bit of strange experience facing something like that with a group of people we’ve never met.
We emerged from the room all in one piece, not even sure there was actual damage done to the building. But I recognized in my heart… that could so easily have gone either way. We were in the thick of that storm in a bad way and it is reality that we could have breathed our last (my chest was tight from the adrenaline of it the rest of the day). We are so blessed to have walked out unharmed. But, whatever might have resulted of that or what actually did, here are the truths as they sit on my heart… we are not in control of some things (like tornadoes), but we are in control of how we face the storms. Will we choose to love, offer our best, and praise God for the chance to show His love in otherwise potentially chaotic or hopeless times? Whatever painful, terrible, or miraculous result comes of dark times, there is hope and peace in being surrendered to the reality that there is a bigger and more beautiful picture than ourselves. It is hard to convey in just words after such a hair-raising and dark experience the terror of it, but I was truly frightened. It hurt my heart seeing all those people in that store, many seeming so unsure and helpless. But I found encouragement in facing that emergency situation seeing that despite the fear and uncertainty, people banded together to figure out the best precautions to take, people expressed so much love and comfort toward each other.
Reflecting :
We are human, we will be scared, some days will seem nearly impossible to fathom we lived them. Sometimes we feel small in a big world. But for me I look back on times like this past 48 hours and marvel at how small my presence is in such a big world and yet how big God’s love is to be able to place peace on my heart despite the chaos. I still don’t know how He does it. I still simultaneously experience grief for others and terror, but yet hope and peace at the same time wrapping around all of it. Honestly on days like these, I pray more heavily than ever that every person can experience true peace. The biggest hurt in my heart most days, is thinking of life for anyone who is living without peace. It is true that in my life personally, I find that peace through God. A part of me cowers to share a post like this, because I never ever want to push my faith on others. Please, please know that. Sharing these experiences isn’t about trying to convince anyone of anything spiritual, it is just expressing life as I experience it from a spiritual perspective. I want to share my heart a little for those who care to know (I have no expectation or pressure for anyone to agree or disagree). It’s a lot like when I tell people how much I love Costco cakes… they are really amazingly yummy to me, so I just want to make sure I share that good news sometimes. =-)
To summarize the list 48 hours, there are certainly many things that fall on the unpleasant side… bad news regarding friends and family situations, disorganization and loss of some important data/writing due to technology issues, husband feeling unwell, terrifying tornado warning experience, printer was out of ink (I hadn’t mentioned that yet, but it was an ordeal too), and many more results of all of those things that have certainly impacted the lives of those we love, our own, and this trip overall. But, there are blessings and love that have poured out, wonderful people we’ve seen and spoken to in regard to these situations, good things happening at work, the reality that we get to see some friends and family while we are on this work trip, and pieces of more personal good news that came to us, etc.
Whoever is reading this, if you are among those who are friends or family that are mentioned in this post who are dealing with life’s storms or are someone that randomly stumbled on this post online, you are so loved. Please remember that you’re not alone, we’re all in this storm together. And whatever the circumstance and wherever you look for healing, I pray with so much persistence that you have peace in your heart.
Stay blessed, stay hopeful, remember you are loved, and I pray you have peace through those days. ♡♡♡♡♡♡
P.S. We finally made it to a hotel last night and feel rejuvenated this morning (my husband is feeling much better today). Next we’ll stop in Nashville and we’ll get to St. Louis for the convention on Friday! We are headed to whatever comes next, excited to see people we love, and work a great convention in St. Louis where we will meet lots more awesome folks…. blessings!
