Love Fantasy Books? Vestige of Credence 30 – Heart Sinking
Part 30: Heart Sinking
Walking the streets of Luap, Zell was beginning to feel hopeless. He glanced about the beautiful city he had cherished for centuries. It was not so long ago that the children would have been playing in the parks and merchants selling sea flowers on the streets. Zell could picture the cycles when he himself was young. He spent long cycles in class learning about many species and the ocean and sky. He remembered a time when soldiers or defense were unheard of. It was as if Zell could feel his heart sinking lower within him. He longed for the times before young Basalt deaths and abductions. Why couldn’t he wake up from the horrible nightmare? His heart felt as if it was breaking.
But Zell was now a respected, Basalt elder; he had to accept reality. Things were never going to be the same and war was happening. He and the other elders were exploring many methods against the Cumulus, yet victory was anything but guaranteed. The bitter truth was that the Cumulus were thus far indestructible and possessed greater technology. The Basalt stood little chance in this fight. The top Basalt were researching avenues and materials that might weaken or kill the Cumulus. Having had no success thus far in their research was dampening their hopes.
Aside from their research, the Basalt elders had also assigned a couple of separate missions for their soldiers. Ellara and Kadden had been sent to retrieve a teleportation device from the Cumulus, and then use it to search the universe for another energy-based life form that might stand against them. Narsha and Misty had been sent to try and persuade the Erisa to help the Basalt strengthen their defenses. Erisa were a small race, of only hundreds, who had long ago escaped to Terryl from war on the planet of Nees. The Erisa were an unusual species who claimed to have many individuals in each of their bodies, but they could be of great assistance to the Basalt due to their knowledge of war. If both missions failed, the Basalt would be left to fight and defend on their own.
It had been some time since Ellara, Kadden, Narsha, and Misty had departed. The only defense thus far developed by the Basalt was sound cubes. They had been able to channel their own vocal band sounds into small cube cases. The small cubes were formed from limestone. The Cumulus had not attempted a full scale attack yet, but the few scouts the Basalt had faced were chased away by shooting the sound cubes at them. Zell knew the sound cubes were only a temporary solution. What further could the Basalt do? They had no source of energy that could stand against the Cumulus. The only thing truly saving the Basalt to this point were the Cumulus spies.

Vestige of Credence 29 (High Fantasy Story) – Vastness of the Water
Part 29: Vastness of the Water
Though they planned to walk and swim part of the journey to give Mij a break, they knew he would at least need to swim them up to the surface. It would have been ideal to continue through the tunnels as far north as possible, but there was no guarantee they would find another rift or route back up to the top. It also seemed like the best time to take Ramus to the surface in order to save her time and prevent her from back-tracking too much on her way to the Basalt civilization.
On their way up, Niomi, Kadden, and Ellara found themselves feeling relieved. Finding the underworld had been insightful and exciting, but they missed the surface. While they were feeling relieved, Mij, Lailie, and Anvid were feeling anxious to see what the ocean would look like and Ramus just wondered how her fellow Cumulus friends were faring in the clouds, if in fact they were still there. Restless from the monotony of traveling, they all slowly fell asleep except Mij, whose Dragile speed and endurance propelled him higher and higher through the rift. Of course, Ramus did not sleep either; lacking physical form made sleep unnecessary.
Finally emerging from the rift, Lailie was surprised by the abundance of life before her eyes. There weren’t many creatures living underground, but the ocean seemed to be filled with life. There were small scaled swimming creatures all about them. Kadden described them as fish. Creatures of many colors and shapes were everywhere. Most unusual was the vastness of the water with no end in sight. It looked as if the open ocean had no bounds or containment in any direction. She wondered for the first time how huge their planet really was; more interestingly, how vast their universe must be. Part of her wanted to know, see, and understand it all. Another part of her recognized the beauty of each new discovery, and it occurred to her how monotonous existence can be with no revelations. Other than stories the Basalt had shared of the sky and meeting Ramus, it was nearly unbelievable that the water could have a surface of its own, like the ocean floor was the surface of the underground.
Ramus appreciated the ride up to the ocean floor, and was ready to head for the Basalt people. It would be her job to report the status of the mission to the elders. After informing the elders of the Graphine and Dragile, they may wish to further combine efforts against the Cumulus. Only Ramus had any idea where to find the Graphine, so she could be their guide. The company felt sure that, at the very least, it would be wise for the Basalt and Graphine to attempt developing more methods of using the elusa against the Cumulus. After saying short goodbyes to her new friends, Ramus ventured out in the expanse in search of civilization, while the rest of the party walked north.

Orlando Event: Barnes & Noble Get Pop-Cultured at Altamonte Springs
Orlando Event: Barnes & Noble Get Pop-Cultured
Thank you to everyone who has been kindly inquiring when I’ll be out for an event again. I have not been able to make the time commitment for any conventions and probably will not be able to do so until the end of the year (due to preparations for the launch of Obsidian Series book 3 in November). That said, I couldn’t pass up the coming Get Pop-Cultured Cosplay event with my awesome friends at Barnes & Noble in Altamonte Springs, FL! So, I’ll be venturing out of my writing and book launch prep cave briefly to dress up and sign books at the fun event. I hope to see many of you there. Any guesses who I’ll cosplay? Can’t wait to see what characters you choose.
Vestige of Credence 28 (Epic Fantasy Story) – The Ice Caps
Part 28: The Ice Caps
By first instinct they planned to shoot him down, but they noticed he carried a small rock with the words “Message for Niomi” inscribed on it. That little rock saved his life. Ellara could not help but feel a little prideful, because the rock had been her idea as a precaution. She also suggested the note of explanation the group had sent with Mij. Niomi explained to them that the Basalt in the settlement were all doing well. There had been land shake tragedies, but not many. Before she continued to speak, she paused, having finally noticed Anvid and Lailie.
Having understood her thoughts, Lailie responded, “A history of our species, the Graphine, will have to wait and be told during the flight on the next leg of our journey. We have no time to waste.”
Niomi agreed, and immediately asked what was next in the plan the elders had outlined. Kadden and Ellara looked at each other and back at the gathered individuals. It was a strange assortment of Basalt, Cumulus, Graphine, and Dragile. It was proof that all components and species of life must work together in some way to survive; everything is connected.
“There is no time to waste, we now must make our way north. We will search there for the Itsuj Basalt race. They have never interacted much with the rest of the Basalt people. In fact they are virtually nomads,” declared Kadden.
The Itsuj was a race that was native to the Nitsujan Ice Caps. Their race was considered particularly wise among the Basalt and far more advanced in their technology and scientific studies. Though no Basalt races had attempted to contact the Itsuj in decades, it was time to reach out and hope for a helping response. In the most recent contact with the Itsuj, though it was long ago, rumors had spread that they developed understanding of how to manipulate water around them using their thoughts. It was something seemingly impossible, but if it was true the ability could be a great tool not only in the war but throughout the journey to search for help. No one fancied the long venture that was before them, and only the hope of returning to a peaceful existence inspired them to continue. The ice caps were dangerous and usually avoided. There were large whale predators and sudden flash freezing waves that could result in creatures being frozen alive. No one was painting a pretty picture in their head about the possibilities that could occur when they reached the ice caps, but no one wanted to turn back.

Love Fantasy Books? Vestige of Credence 27 – Wings of the Dragile
Part 27: Wings of the Dragile
Everyone was staring at Niomi with inquisitive eyes. “I know you need help,” Niomi started, “I saw the note you sent. I just, I…” she looked to the ground sadly, “I cannot get us there. The Cumulus used their teleportation technology to take visitors to their home.” She glanced up again to disappointed faces. “I’m so sorry,” she added.
There was a moment of quiet thoughtfulness before Mij began flapping his wings in the water. Startled, the group jumped back.
“Mij!” exclaimed Anvid. “Mij wants to take us to the Cumulus territory.”
“Can he really swim that far?” asked Ellara with concern. “And then can he fly that far, after he swims all that way, and with us on his back???”
“That is not an option,” declared Kadden. “It would surly kill a creature to make a journey like that.”
Mij then flapped his wings faster and harder as he rose up farther in the trench at a fair speed.
“You do not know much about the Dragile, Kadden, but I do,” Anvid assured. “And I feel very certain this is something Mij can do.”
“We don’t have a choice anyway,” added Ellara. “We must get the Iffanport.”
They had anticipated a much lengthier process in locating and retrieving Niomi. The company had prepared to spend days or even weeks attempting to locate her, but fortune seemed to have other plans. Niomi admitted that when the Basalt first spotted Mij, they feared him; not only because he was a new species, but a gigantic one as well. Previously, they weren’t even remotely aware of the underground species, and because no creatures like him existed on the surface they feared he may have been sent by the Cumulus.

Epic Fantasy Book: Vestige of Credence 26 – Help on the Journey
Part 26: Help on the Journey
“Unfortunately,” Ellara began, “we really can’t help you find your way back to the Basalt people. Although Lailie and Anvid are able to guide us through the underground, it is impossible to know right now where we stand in relation to the surface locations. If you like, you can join us and we can drop you at the surface when we journey back that way.”
Ramus was pleased with the idea and thankful for the assistance. Due to time constraints, it probably would not be possible to accompany her to the city, but at least they could send an elusa masulk with her in case she encountered another scout. In light of all they learned from Ramus, they were all even more anxious to find Niomi and carry on with the mission. Every moment lost was valuable. Within what seemed like less than half a day later they finally located the trench. All their plans hinged on this being the correct trench. Niomi and her family were hiding at the base of Viaoli, but the company couldn’t be sure they had even found the correct place.
When they entered the trench, everyone decided the best method of locating Niomi would be sending Mij by himself, without carrying a load, to swim around searching for her. His speed would be accelerated greatly without the extra weight on his back, so hopefully he would be back soon with news. They waited patiently and made use of the time by resting. It felt like they waited a long time before they finally spotted their Dragile companion approaching in the distance. Only after his landing did they realize he succeeded in finding someone, because a Basalt woman descended from his back.
“Hello,” the Basalt stranger greeted them. “I am called Niomi.”
“Happy Arryl,” spilled Ellara. “Kadden,” she glanced at him, “and I have traveled far to find you. The elders sent us on a mission. We need to get to the Cumulus territory. Can you get us there?” she questioned hopefully.

Love Fantasy Books? Vestige of Credence 25 – Who are the Cumulus?
Part 25: Who are the Cumulus?
Feeling regretful about their mistake, they worked quickly to release Ramus from the elusa masulk. Her body was only distinguishable due to faint misty outlines and traces of gray and white color. Her hair shone silver and her eyes were like that of all Cumulus. For whatever adaptive reason, Cumulus eyes were white but each eye had a brown iris and black pupil.
Comparable to the Graphine, the Cumulus also had transformative abilities. They could shift in and out of visual form. The Cumulus could mimic the shapes of other creatures. Due to their semi-translucent form, they could not completely replicate physical form, but they could evoke the characteristics. Ramus was tall, slender, and wore nothing, just like all Cumulus. Her body featured natural beautiful swirling design and texture, almost resembling art. She did not have typical female parts that needed to be concealed, like most female species. Rather, she was female by voice and other characteristics, because Cumulus did not reproduce like most creatures. Although the Cumulus had derived vast amounts of information regarding physical beings and systems, it was not pleasant for them to admit that they still struggled to understand the energy that sustained their own existence.
Their coming into existence had been slow and thus far unexplainable. As each came into the world it seemed like they just appeared. Through the years, more and more had slowly emerged out of thin air into the sky, but no one could explain how. They did not age, and did not die of natural causes like disease. It was not yet even proven that they could die at all, only assumed by some advanced thinkers that enough electrical shocks might disperse their energy and life force. Thus far, such accumulation of electricity had not even been found on Terryl.

Vestige of Credence 24 – Meeting Ramus (Love Fantasy Books Series)
Series Part 24: Meeting Ramus
Without hesitation the Cumulus responded, “My name is Ramus. I came to the underground hoping to hide from Ludan. Many of the Cumulus have been migrating anywhere away due to extermination.”
“Extermination?” Ellara replied inquisitively.
“Before total control can be assumed by our species, Ludan feels we first need to filter out our own ranks. Undergoing extreme interrogation is not easy for any of us; many have failed.” She paused and a streak of sadness shot through her expression. “Those not lucky enough to escape face confinement.” She went on to explain that at least if those opposing him were not in his way than they would not be a problem.
“Imprisoned?” Kadden questioned, “How exactly does one imprison a Cumulus?”
“That is secret information only known to Ludan’s most trusted ranks” she replied.
The knowledge provided to the Basalt and Graphine cluster was insightful but devastating. What if Rhen and anyone else helping them from the sky were imprisoned? It could mean their certain destruction if they did not attain that teleportation device.
“Ramus, why weren’t you captured with the rest of the friendly Cumulus? And after not being captured, why didn’t you venture to the Basalt civilization to aid their efforts?” Ellara asked, still suspicious of the Cumulus woman.
“I actually served as a Cumulus scout, intentionally providing misinformation to Ludan and his army. But when they decided to begin interrogations, I realized I needed to give up my passive methods and officially join the Basalt. I was approaching the Basalt city when another scout questioned why I was scouting off schedule. I knew he already suspected me, so I just tried to escape. That is how I ended up here in the tunnels,” Ramus replied.
She described being tracked a great distance and trying to hide in a rift, but the other Cumulus followed. Her best escape route seemed to be the tunnel system she stumbled upon during the runaround. There was no doubt her reasoning was honest, given that it was directly from her thoughts. Cumulus didn’t even know about the existence of the Graphine, much less their ability to mind read, so her words went unquestioned.
