Every Step Of The Way

Walking with God, Enoch did it, and as Bishop would say, at one point God said you’re closer to my house than you are yours. Many years ago The Lord gave me a message called Walking With God. I was blessed to preach it at a Church my Pastor was pastoring at during that time.
As a young Minister there was a lot I did not know, I assumed I would be much more intelligent as I got older. Now as an older Minister there seems to be a lot I don’t know, but I have one thing in common with my younger self and that is this. I love God with all my heart, and I want to walk with Him wherever He leads me.
He has led me to a loving wife, gave us a precious son, and blessed us more than we could imagine. My life is richer because of my faith. Through good times, difficult moments, and heartache, He hasn’t just walked beside me, He’s carried me through.
One of the meanings of Enoch is dedicated, and it wasn’t just that he was dedicated to God. It was that God was dedicated to him, and to all of us. We serve God Who loves us more than we could ever imagine, and wants nothing more than to walk with us.
Enoch saw things beyond his lifetime. He saw things beyond his generation, but the most important thing he saw, was the importance of a relationship with God. The Psalmist said it this way, The Lord is your keeper, The Lord is your shade upon your right hand. He keeps our footsteps sure, because He holds our hand every step of the way.

Art Unboxed The Purpose Of Art

Before I share what I believe the purpose of art to be, I would like to elaborate on two statements I’ve made before. It is that I believe art should inspire, reflect God’s majesty, warm the hearts of loved ones, and communicate with strangers. I believe that anyone can be an artist.
I can tell you from personal experience, you can go from drawing stick figures to portraits. You can go from a very limited ability to a more advanced draftsmanship. It’s not that some are not naturally gifted, but that we all can become better. I don’t consider myself a great artist, but I am a far better artist than when I began.
I have also said that I spell art with three words. Art should have an attractive quality, be relatable to others, and translatable. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so it may not appeal to all, but if it speaks to you, it means that it has an attractive element to it. That seems like an airy phrase doesn’t it, speaks to me, what does that mean?
I believe it means that you should be able to relate in some way to what you see. A lot of images are pretty pictures, but the ones that grab you have something you can relate to in some way. Perhaps not the scene, but the emotion behind it. That’s what I mean by relatable in this case. It should be able to connect with.
Lastly, art should be translatable, or communicate in some way. It can tie people, places, concepts, and ideas together. The same painting can connect a coal miner from Virginia to a Belgian American painter. Art communicates, it creates conversation.
This brings me to the topic of this article, the purpose of art. As a Christian, it is my conviction that every talent, gift, and skill are themselves gifts of God. From Samson’s strength, to my wife’s beauty, to Einstein’s brilliance, I believe they were given by a loving Creator. You may be reading this and completely disagree, and that’s okay, but I would ask you a question.
How many scientific experiments randomly occur without planning? How many paintings did Rembrandt accidentally paint? How many statues did Michelangelo find formed by themselves? If you can appreciate the time poured into achieving scientific breakthroughs, brush strokes, and Rodan’s Thinker, how can a sunrise be accidental?
I believe in The God of The Bible, and because of this, I believe that every gift, talent, and skill was a direct result of God. Our creativity is a small reflection of His creativity. Of course the difference is we paint a sunset, He created it. We shape clay sculptures, He created the clay and the sculptor.
The purpose of art is then the same as the purpose of math, history, and science itself. To explore, reveal, and reflect. To explore in the sense of searching out truth. An artist will tell you they would rather paint a lined and ancient face than a young and beautiful one. It’s because it’s easier to paint an older face, there are more lines. Exploring the lines of the face, or the curves of a mountain should remind us Who formed the face and the forest.
Art reveals His creativity, His craftsmanship, and insight into His plan. God did not only create a sunrise for it’s beauty, this is only one aspect of it. The sunrise we find so breathtaking, warms the planet, comes from a star the planets follow in orbit, and nourishes plants, animals, and mankind. With beauty there is purpose, and point to God.
Once we’ve explored, and experienced revelation, we should reflect it in our own life. This is more than just painting a painting, or shaping a likeness. I believe a component of this is how art can bridge gaps to form relationships, to bring understanding, and to find common ground. Each of which point to the relationship between God and man.
Those who appreciate art will tell you it conveys a vastness, and cover countless subjects. Often it can reminds us not only of what we are capable of, but how small we are. Each are important.
Remove God from this equation and it could form a sense of luck or helplessness. Include God and it is a reminder that no matter how small we are, He is greater, and He cares for us. Those Who succeed, didn’t do it solely on their own merit, with His help I can succeed also.
A painting of the ocean reminds me that while it is big, He is bigger, and because He is, I don’t have to worry. He holds us in the center of His heart and hand. The waves may crash, the world may be in turmoil, but God has always created beautiful images. I can tell from experience, He has blessed my life to be far more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. When I consider His blessings, I see a work of art that I could never have accomplished without Him.
