Art Unboxed – Have Easel, Will Paint

I enjoy art of all types, in different ways. Pencil and ink, watercolor, digital, pastel, and acrylic all have features I enjoy. Acrylics, because of several factors I get to paint the least, but one practice has enabled me to paint the best acrylics I’ve ever painted.

I’ll warn you, it’s very simple. It’s not a brush technique, type of paint, and no, it’s not edges. It’s simply the practice of keeping an easel setup, ready to paint when I’m ready to paint.

Between working from home, and caring for our three year old, which is far more important to my wife and I, it doesn’t leave a lot of time for setup. That is why keeping an easel ready for when I’m ready, was a game changer for me. The best portrait I’ve ever painted happened in our kitchen.

President Lincoln was near our dishwasher until he left to be hung in our Church’s Christian School. The kitchen also played host to a palette knife elephant I painted for our nephews and niece. It turned out very well,

partially because it allowed me the time to come back to it when I had a moment. Had the easel not been setup, it would not have happened.

Currently the easel is in a corner of my Wife’s new office, hosting a floral and a rooster painting I’m alternating. When I have a few moments, before tiredness sets in, I can put on my artist’s apron, and do a little work on one or the other. A wise man once said you will do what you make time for.

While painting is not the most important part of my life, it is an important part of it. So, when the other areas have been addressed, I make time for writing and painting. While I enjoy them very much, I believe they go beyond a hobby, to a part of my calling.

They enable me to serve people in additional ways, and for that I’m very thankful. If it’s a vehicle to serve others, I need to rotate the proverbial tires, and change the oil. That means keeping my easel, brushes, and paints ready to go.

Do you have an easel setup for when you’re ready to paint? If not, what would you have painted last year had it been easily accessible? I would encourage you to find a corner to be creative in, and it will expand your horizons farther than you will ever expect.
