I highly recommend all the stories in Juliet Escoria’s book Black Cloud, but the story I want to talk about is “The Other Kind of Magic”. There’s something fairy tale-like about this story, maybe it’s the second-person. And like a fairy tale, I want to live in this story and fantasize about the things described in it.
I read this story and wondered how I could get a job working coat check, making five hundred dollars of cash in a night. If you’re in your late twenties and worked a variety of low-paying “real jobs”, there’s something appealing about pocketing that kind of money away in a temporary and unskilled job. So is dressing up in a slutty outfit and lots of make up, if your usual style is androgynous clothes and little make-up. And dressing this way would make you talk to your co-workers and the coat check customers in a different way than you talk to you friends. You wouldn’t be quite yourself. Maybe you’d take more risks.
I imagine what it would be like to have a night job like that, where I worked while others were sleeping, and then walked home tired in those strange hours of the early morning, while others were just starting their day. It would feel a little like the way staying up night partying does, but a regulated version that’s scheduled to happen a few times a week. I’d have been working instead of spending money partying, there’d be many bills at the bottom of my purse. Maybe I’d go spend a few of those bills on breakfast at a diner, before rolling into bed and missing the rest of the daylight hours.
I fantasize about the things that happen to the narrator in “The Other Kind of Magic”, but like the narrator, I know I’d only want them for a little while. In the long run, they would not be for me. Ultimately, I can’t flee my own self and whatever ideas or ambitions lurk underneath.
You can read “The Other Kind of Magic” in Juliet Escoria’s collection Black Cloud and online at Vol. 1 Brooklyn.
There’s also videos for each of the stories in Black Cloud. I interviewed Juliet Escoria about those videos at The Fanzine. Here’s the video for “The Other Kind of Magic”. According to this nice feature at Atticus Review, it has the lowest views of all the Black Cloud videos. Fuck that, it’s awesome. Give it some more views by watching it now.

My parents are starting to become old. They both have to go to the bathroom a lot. It seems that their bladders have grown smaller. Sometimes this frustrates me— how often they have to use the bathroom. It makes me impatient. I want to tell them they can’t go. I want to tell them things like, “Come on, can’t you hold it?”
Someday I will be their age. Someday my bladder will have grown smaller, too. Someday I will think about how I feel now, and I will become embarrassed by the impatience I once had.

Obama wins first place. I think I may have been influenced by the fact that they seemingly created a Twitter for this occasion. They get a copy.
Sex Pistols win second place. I think I may have been influenced because Penny did it and I love Penny. I think I may have been dissuaded because shipping to the UK costs a lot. She gets an e-book.
