Passing on a Writer Auction for Bridget

I am passing on this entry posted by amazing author APRIL HENRY. I was born in Oregon like Bridget and donated a DON'T DIE DRAGONFLY, the new large-format with the bonus short chilling story called DOMINIC'S VOLCANO to this auction. Please support!

Great items up for bid to help Bridget fight her cancer!

This is Bridget. Three things happened to Bridget in February:
1. She got an agent for her young adult novel.
2. She got married.
3. She found out she has Stage Four colon cancer.

I met Bridget a yea

TIPS from my SCBWI Talk

Last Saturday I spoke on BLOGGING TO PROMOTE to over 200 SCBWI attendees. It was an amazing conference and as a speaker I was booked into a hotel for a night, taken out to dinner with other speakers and given the opportunity to use power point for the first time. So cool.

I created a hand-out to go along with talk, and the following are some tips I included about blogging. Mostly commonsense stuff that you probably already know. I thought you'd like to see it anyway (g).

BLOGGERS BEWARE…TIPS FOR

SCBWI in DAVIS was GREAT!

I am no longer a power point virgin.

Yesterday I gave my power point present on BLOGGING TO PROMOTE in Davis for the annual Spring SCBWI conference. With only one glitch (I hit a wrong button) it went really well and afterwards many nice people came up to thank me for the workshop.

My biggest tip about whether or not to blog: even if you aren't sure you want to sign up for major blogs like Twitter and Facebook, register your name so that no one else will beat you to it. If I hadn't signed early,

Suite Writer's Life...at least this weekend (g)

I was so honored when I was invited to speak at SCBWI Davis months ago -- and now tomorrow I give my talk.

I've planned for months since this will be my first power point presentation. I went to Danna Smith's house twice
and she guided me frame by frame through my presentation. She was a great teacher!

I was also invited to the hotel for a night including dinner with speakers -- where I am now with Verla Kay
(who just happened to visit this weekend and can attend the conference,, too). Our room is

Which blog...??

I'm giving a talk called BLOGGING TO PROMOTE in Davis, CA on Saturday (SCBWI).

Just curious....

1. What is your favorite blogging site?

2. Which blog do you think is the best choice for book promotion if you only did one?

3. What's the most interesting blog you read?
    For me this would be
Cynsations -- Cynthia  L. Smith does a great job sharing book buzz.

TWO AT THE ZOO and a Hairy Tarantula

As a YA author I don't often shout about GREAT PICTURE BOOKS, but there's a new one out that my favorite two-year-old keeps asking me to read over and over.

Two at the Zoo by Danna Smith (Author), Valeria Petrone (Illustrator) is a rhyming counting book about a grandfather taking his grandson to the zoo. The verse is so natural and fun to read it makes writing a picture book look easy (IMO picture books are actually the hardest genre to write!).

Today I went to a book signing by Danna Smith for Tw

Teaser Tuesday

I finished going through the final page proofs for DEAD GIRL IN LOVE (August 09), which I originally called Dead Girl Dating since it involves my heroine going on dates for her best friend. Here's a scene with one of her dating disasters:

DEAD GIRL IN LOVE:

“You like nighttime and graves and secrets of the dead—just like me.” He pointed to a cluster of flat headstones tucked behind a small fence, the writing on the stones too faded to read more than a few family names like Shipp and Beans. “They c
