Stuff that happened at SCBWI Day 2 in LA
About yesterday...Saturday in LA/SCBWI Nationals
First talk was on picture books, led by Arthur Levine with Melinda Long, Eve Bunting, Kadir Nelson. Fun to hear about their stories. Eve said that her idea of an exceptional book is, “A book that lasts for a long time; with something at the heart of a book.” Melinda’s answer was “a book with a strong appeal to both child and adults.”
Then Karen Cushman spoke and as a kid she read everything she could get from the library. She also worked at the

Hey, I'm at SCBWI Nationals in LA!
LA is sunny!
Century Plaze Hyatt is plush, comfy and cool!
There are nearly 1,000 other writers/illustrators hanging out here!
Yesterday I was able to hear some amazing authors speak like Sherman Alexie, David Wiesner, Ingrid Law and Betty Birney. Editors spoke, too, including a panel by 4 editors who spoke of a specific author's success (like Cinda Chima and her WARRIER HEIR series). Here are some glimpses of writerly brilliance from my notes:
* Sherman Alexie spoke of growing up poor and sick, ad

Blog Tour: A Conversation with Maggie Stiefvater
(Note: I got to know Maggie at the Gothic Girl retreat in June and was lucky to snag an ARC of SHIVER. I read it right away and was impressed with the strong, lyrical, exciting writing. I'm not surprised to find out this morning that it rated a star in PW. Enjoy this interview!)

Booksigning Recap
The store had our books set up by the door with a cute little gargole by my books and stuffed animals by Danna and Jeri. As I walked in and sat my stuff down, an older couple came over to me, the woman saying, "Do you recognize me?" And I said, "You look familiar." It was a good friend of my mom's. 5 THINGS ON A FRIDAY
1. Got box of new postcards for promotional handouts.

2. Had to wear a baby blanket over my butt at Round Table -- after realizing my shorts had ripped, exposing my whole backside. The only thing to cover it was the baby's blanket.
3. Talked Big Brother news with a girl I met at the playground while watching the kids play.
4. Mailed out DEAD GIRL IN LOVE early copies and postcards-bookmarks-tattoos to some YALSA librarians.
5. I gave in to curiosity and peer pressure --

Remember your first paid writing job?
An author never forgets that first REAL CHECK for their writing.
For me, it was an article in a local parenting magazine titled
CHILDREN'S BOOKS MAKE THE BEST FRIENDS. I'd gotten the
idea to submit when someone suggested writing about what you knew
and I knew a lot about vintage girl series like Beverly Gray, Judy Bolton,
Cherry Ames, Penny Parker, Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew...and hundreds more.
So I wrote an article about how beloved childrens books create special memories for
children.
I never receiv
