Launching Mito, Medical Kidnap Files #1 and Harvesting Other New Releases
What would you do if you woke up in hospital with no family or friends and no idea what you were doing there?
What would you do if your child was taken away from you for trying to treat his rare disease?
What if you knew there was a conspiracy and no one would believe you?
More and more people are facing just those situations and there are no solutions in sight. More and more stories about medical kidnap or legal kidnap are making it into the news, so it was bound to make it into my writing sooner or later!
Today, I am releasing Mito, Medical Kidnap Files #1. Book #2 (EDS) and #3 (Proxy) are on preorder and will be released in November and December.
Gabriel has dealt with mysterious medical issues his whole life. Just when he finally thought that they had all of the answers and he was on the road to good health, he is apprehended by DFS on the grounds of medical neglect.
At first, he thought that he would be back home in a few days, once the misunderstanding was cleared up. But when Renata tells Gabriel her crazy conspiracy theories, Gabriel feels the first pangs of doubt. Is there really a conspiracy? Will he ever be able to get well and go back to his mother, or is he doomed to be another guinea pig for Doctor De Klerk?

And as I usually do when I am gearing up for a new release, I am giving you two teasers today! One from Lost in the Sun and one from my upcoming release Mito.
Lost in the Sun
Lost in the Sun reminds me of a couple of other young adult books I’ve read in the last year about mental illness. While Challenger Deep and A Head Full of Ghosts are both about families dealing with teens with schizophrenia, there are definite parallels with Lost in the Sun, about a middle-schooler suffering anxiety after a traumatic event. It was an enjoyable, engaging read, and I thought that Trent’s emotions were particularly well-handled. I felt like it ended just a little too soon, but it was still well done.
So can you blame me if I drew pictures sometimes? If my thoughts were full of Jared? One thing was for sure: If Jared Richards really had fallen off a tightrope, instead of getting whacked in the chest by yours truly, no one would even have to ask if I wanted to join their pickup games.
Lost in the Sun, Lisa Graff
Everyone says that middle school is awful, but Trent knows nothing could be worse than the year he had in fifth grade, when a freak accident on Cedar Lake left one kid dead, and Trent with a brain full of terrible thoughts he can’t get rid of. Trent’s pretty positive the entire disaster was his fault, so for him middle school feels like a fresh start, a chance to prove to everyone that he’s not the horrible screw-up they seem to think he is.
If only Trent could make that fresh start happen.
It isn’t until Trent gets caught up in the whirlwind that is Fallon Little—the girl with the mysterious scar across her face—that things begin to change. Because fresh starts aren’t always easy. Even in baseball, when a fly ball gets lost in the sun, you have to remember to shift your position to find it.
Mito, Medical Kidnap Files #1
Medical Kidnap Files is an exciting new series being released in October, November, and December this year. Mito is scheduled to be released October 3. Un these YA medical thrillers, you will meet Gabriel, Renata, and other teens who have been wrongfully apprehended by Social Services because of their medical conditions.
The nurse watched Renata walk out. She shook her head. “Don’t you listen to anything Renata Vega has to say,” she warned Gabriel. She moved the call button just out of his reach and tucked the sheets around him, making it more difficult to move. She slid the visitor chair back against the wall again. “Renata has a lot of issues.”

Excerpt from The Darkest Secret
Before getting into my teaser, be sure to check out a Lena Mae Hill’s Huge YA Paperback Giveaway, featuring a paperback copy of Once Brothers. Ten paperbacks for your TBR pile!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules at Books and a Beat. Anyone can play along.
I had a hard time choosing which book to give a teaser from today. I settled on The Darkest Secret by Alex Marwood. It is a psychological exploration of a cold case of a missing toddler ten years after the fact, upon her father’s death. Marwood is pretty loose with the language, so if you are sensitive to frequent four-letter expletives, this is not the one for you. There is also a lot of jumping back and forth in time, which can be disconcerting. But it is a good mystery with some interesting twists and turns along the way, right up to the final page.
That’s the thing with your psychopaths, isn’t it? They’re not always creeping around with knives in dark alleyways. Most of them kill you from the inside out.
The Darkest Secret, Alex Marwood
When a child goes missing at an opulent house party, it makes international news. But what really happens behind closed doors?
Twelve years ago, Mila Jackson’s three-year-old half-sister Coco disappeared during their father’s fiftieth birthday party. Her identical twin Ruby was left behind as the only witness. The girls’ father, Sean, was wealthy and influential, as were the friends gathered at their seaside vacation home for the weekend’s debauchery. The case ignited a media frenzy and forever changed the lives of everyone involved.
Now, Sean Jackson is dead, and the people who were present that terrible night must gather once more for a funeral that will reveal that the secrets of the past can never stay hidden. Perfectly paced all the way through its devastating conclusion, The Darkest Secret is one that fans of Gillian Flynn and Liane Moriarty won’t be able to put down.

Excerpt from A Dog’s Purpose
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules at Books and a Beat. Anyone can play along!
In case you missed it, I recently released Loose the Dogs! Click to read a couple of chapters for free. I also have a $0.99 sale on now for all Workman Homeschool Classics. And be sure to enter to win a paperback copy of In the Tick of Time in this Goodreads Giveaway!
If you’re looking for a dog book with heart, I have just started A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron, a touching and hilarious dogs-eye view of life and a dog’s search for purpose in life. It had me laughing out loud more than once with unexpected insights into doggie world. Particularly when the dog meets a skunk for the first time (sprayed, of course) and promptly goes looking for it again the next day (sprayed again).
The other one I mentally called Hungry, because he whimpered whenever Mother was gone and would suckle her with an odd desperation, as if it were never enough. Hungry slept more than my siblings and I did, so we often jumped on him and chewed on his face.
A Dog’s Purpose, W. Bruce Cameron
This is the remarkable story of one endearing dog’s search for his purpose over the course of several lives. More than just another charming dog story, A Dog’s Purpose touches on the universal quest for an answer to life’s most basic question: Why are we here?
Surprised to find himself reborn as a rambunctious golden-haired puppy after a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey’s search for his new life’s meaning leads him into the loving arms of 8-year-old Ethan. During their countless adventures Bailey joyously discovers how to be a good dog.
But this life as a beloved family pet is not the end of Bailey’s journey. Reborn as a puppy yet again, Bailey wonders—will he ever find his purpose?
Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog’s Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog’s many lives, but also a dog’s-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man’s best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

Do things with lots of legs creep you out? This may not be the book for you…
Award-winning author P.D. Workman’s In the Tick of Time will leave your skin crawling every time you hike through the woods or long grass, long after you have finished reading it. A well-crafted suspense novel that will take you into the psyche of both the flawed investigator and slightly-deranged perpetrator. You will look at your coworkers differently after this.
Matt Malloy, infectious diseases expert for the DOH vector-borne disease division, knew there was something wrong with the Buffalo Head infection cluster as soon as it hit his desk. But knowing it instinctively and proving it were two completely different things, especially when his boss and coworkers already suspected that, battling sleep deprivation, he’d already gone around the bend.
Matt knew that solving the mysteries of the Buffalo Head cluster was a matter of life and death. He just didn’t know that it could be a matter of his life and death.
It could happen to you. Maybe it already has.
Praise for In the Tick of Time
“I thoroughly enjoyed this page turner and look forward to more.”
