Excerpt from Mercy

Things that are happening this week: I am enjoying writing a new book in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series for Nanowrimo this month. It is coming together nicely. I have books in a couple of giveaways if you click on the banners down below. Be sure to check back here this Friday for a special Christmas short story in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series! And now, on to the teaser!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

On to a medical thriller this week, one of my favourite genres. Daniel and Michael Palmer serve up Mercy: a Novel, where an “angel of death” serial killer is eliminating one patient after another. I am enjoying the detailed descriptions of the medical procedures, the suspense, and the character development of the protagonist and her family. In the tradition of Robin Cook’s Coma, the Palmers bring you Mercy. My teaser:

“How are you feeling, Walt?” Doc asked.

“Like I’m dying,” Walt said.

“Everyone is dying, Walt. We’re just moving at different rates of speed, is all.”

Daniel Palmer, Mercy

Dr. Julie Devereux is an outspoken advocate for the right to die — until a motorcycle accident leaves her fiancé, Sam Talbot, a quadriplegic. Sam begs to end his life, but Julie sees hope in a life together. With the help of an organization that opposes physician-assisted suicide, Julie has Sam coming around to her point of view when he suddenly dies from an unexpected heart attack. An autopsy reveals that Sam died of an unusual heart defect, one seen only in those under extreme stress — in fact, it appears that Sam had been literally scared to death.

As Julie investigates similar cases, she finds a frightening pattern… and finds herself the target of disturbing threats. The more cases Julie discovers, the more the threats escalate, until she is accused of a mercy killing of her own. To clear her name and save her career, she must track down whoever is behind these mysterious deaths… but time is running out as someone has decided that killing Julie is the only way to stop her.

Coffee, Tea, and Gluten Free: The Cookbook

Gluten-Free Recipes

Coffee, Tea, and Gluten FreeSo you’ve been reading my Auntie Clem’s Bakery series, and now you are craving some gluten-free treats of your own! While I do eat gluten-free myself, I have a lot of other dietary restrictions, so my repetoire is limited, and when I want to make something that isn’t on my usual weekly meal plan, it’s usually an experiment, swapping ingredients on the fly.

But one of my author friends, April D. Brown has recently put out a new Gluten-Free cookbook, and I offered to feature it for her.

So if you’re gluten-free and hungry, buy Coffee, Tea, and Gluten Free and get cooking now!

Excerpt from The Silent Sister

I hope you’re having a Happy Halloween and picked up lots of scary reads this year!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This week I am on to a psychological mystery, The Silent Sister, by Diane Chamberlain. I am drawing close to the end, and it has been an interesting and engaging read, although I have guessed all of the twists well ahead of time. A well-written suspense novel that reminds me somewhat of a Mary Higgins Clark.

“I stopped by right after Daddy died,” I said, “but I couldn’t find you.”

“And that surprised you?”

Okay, I thought. The angry Danny today.

Diane Chamberlain, The Silent Sister

In The Silent Sister, Riley MacPherson has spent her entire life believing that her older sister Lisa committed suicide as a teenager. Now, over twenty years later, her father has passed away and she’s in New Bern, North Carolina cleaning out his house when she finds evidence to the contrary. Lisa is alive. Alive and living under a new identity. But why exactly was she on the run all those years ago, and what secrets are being kept now? As Riley works to uncover the truth, her discoveries will put into question everything she thought she knew about her family. Riley must decide what the past means for her present, and what she will do with her newfound reality, in this engrossing New York Times bestselling mystery from Diane Chamberlain.

Another Excerpt from The Hero of Ages

I told you I would have a Halloween short story for you in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series, and it is now live. Get your copy of Witch-Free Halloween here. While you’re at it, you can check out my Halloween round-up for some other treats.

I realized today that I haven’t written much about what I have been writing lately. But rest assured, I haven’t given up on it! On Saturday, I finished the first draft of Vanishing Teardrops, which is the fourth book in the Tattooed Teardrops series. Tattooed Teardrops was originally written as a stand alone, but I have had so many requests for a sequel that I eventually took a run at it… which led to book three… and book four… I am expecting to release book two, Two Teardrops, in March 2018.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This doesn’t usually happen—I am still reading the book I was reading last Tuesday (Brandon Sanderson’s The Hero of Ages). I had just started it last Monday, and am just finishing it today, and it is epic fantasy! So, you get a second teaser from the same book.

I have been interested in the themes of faith and of opposition in all things, such as between ruin and preservation. So I picked a quote on faith.

“It sounds to me, young one,” Haddek said, “that you are searching for something that cannot be found.”

“The truth?” Sazed said.

“No,” Haddek replied. “A religion that requires no faith of its believers.”

Brandon Sanderson, The Hero of Ages

Who is the Hero of Ages?

To end the Final Empire and restore freedom, Vin killed the Lord Ruler. But as a result, the Deepness–the lethal form of the ubiquitous mists–is back, along with increasingly heavy ashfalls and ever more powerful earthquakes. Humanity appears to be doomed.

Having escaped death at the climax of The Well of Ascension only by becoming a Mistborn himself, Emperor Elend Venture hopes to find clues left behind by the Lord Ruler that will allow him to save the world. Vin is consumed with guilt at having been tricked into releasing the mystic force known as Ruin from the Well. Ruin wants to end the world, and its near omniscience and ability to warp reality make stopping it seem impossible. She can’t even discuss it with Elend lest Ruin learn their plans!
