My teaser this week is from Mary Kay Andrews’ Callahan Garrity Mysteries, Every Crooked Nanny. I’ve read one book from this series before, but hadn’t read book 1 in the series, Every Crooked Nanny. I often read random books in the middle of a series…

The series follows Callahan Garrity, an Atlanta cop turned housekeeping business owner and private eye, an interesting combination that gives her a little more access to people’s houses than the owner might have planned. While I figured out a few of the clues before they were explained, I’m still not sure who the murderer is. The Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) plays an central role in the plot of the book, and there are a number of mistakes about the beliefs and operations of the church; but I’m not sure if it is ignorance on the part of the author or the characters. Mary Kay Andrews may have intentionally made the characters misunderstand or misrepresent the church. I won’t know until I get to the end!

The little girl stopped picking her nose and shook her head slowly. “No, she’s not. She’s not in the kitchen and she’s not upstairs in her room and she’s not out in the playhouse. Me and Carter looked. And her clothes are gone from her room. Mama, maybe Kristen ran away.”

Gluten-Free Murder is now live! I had a lot of fun writing this series and hope you’ll pop over and have a look.

I’ve finished a few books in the past week, including one by a favourite author of mine, Mary Higgins Clark, but the one I had to highlight today was Roald Dahl’s The BFG. BFG, for those of you who don’t know, stands for Big Friendly Giant. It has grown in popularity since being made into a movie by Steven Spielberg. This is such a fun read, filled with lots of scrumdiddlyumptious words!

While it is a light, funny children’s book, it is packed with themes of prejudice based on appearance or race, poverty and privilege, and learning differences or disabilities. As Madeleine L’Engle said: “You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”

‘Words’, he said, ‘is oh such a twitch-tickling problem to me all my life. So you must simply try to be patient and stop squibbling. As I am telling you before, I know exactly what words I am wanting to say, but somehow or other they is always getting squiff-squiddled around.’

I am so excited to kick off my first cozy mystery series. While I’ve been flexing my mystery muscles recently with books such as The Girl in the Morgue and She Wore Mourning, the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series has a different vibe. A little lighter and more fun, with animal antics and delicious baking as a counterpoint to the murder investigations. Gluten-Free Murder is the first of three books and two shorts stories to get this series off and running!

This week’s teaser is from Downfall: A Brady Novel of Suspense by J.A. Jance. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series, but I certainly wouldn’t hesitate. There are a lot of references to Sheriff Brady’s previous cases and experiences in Downfall, and it sounds like she’s had an exciting career. Downfall had lots of suspense, police procedure, and family relationships. A well-rounded story. I did figure out the villain before the reveal, but I still enjoyed waiting to see how Joanna Brady and her department would sort it out.

…the disappointment registered on Denny’s face represented every working mother’s all-too-familiar tug-of-war.

“Finish your dinner, Denny, and get your jammies on,” Joanna suggested. “Maybe I’ll have time enough to read some Dr. Seuss to you before Chief Deputy Hadlock comes by to pick me up.”

My book this week is not a mystery or a thriller, but a “slice of life” women’s contemporary novel, Family Tree, a novel by Susan Wiggs. I wasn’t sure when I downloaded it whether it would keep me interested, or whether it would be a yawn that I eventually gave up on. It has turned out to be a fascinating tapestry of interwoven stories, a combination of family epic, romance, and recovery from tragedy.

Married couples fought about the dumbest things. Who left the cap off the toothpaste … The number of syllables in broccoli … And now this. The water buffalo.​​​​​​​

What makes P.D. Workman’s books so good

Another guest blog by Randy! Yes, he’s been writing up a storm the last few weeks.

Now I know most of you think I am biased, but I am staying objective here. What makes any author good, not just Pam?

I have a few criteria for reading a book. Everyone has their own reasoning for picking a book out, whether it is the storyline or the characters. Let’s work with those two points.

Storyline
It must keep me guessing on what is going to happen next.

If I can predict the storyline, I will lose interest. The author has to keep me entertained. I have to be kept guessing who the villain is. I have to be on pins and needles. If I am not, I will usually lose interest.

I had no idea who the killer was. Pam kept me guessing with each turn this story took. You have to read this book to believe it. You can get it here:

Now on with the story line

The storyline has to be consistent.

I have to at least believe the plot. The storyline can’t be choppy; I have to understand why a story goes the direction it does. It has to fit in with a logical sequence.

What makes this book so good is that Pam did a lot of research into life on the reservation. She goes into detail of the traditions what they go through. I think I learned more about Native life that I have ever done before. I learned to respect the Native life; she taught me not to just judge on appearance.

Characters
Characters must be believable

Next, the characters they have to be real. Seriously, they have to have a personality. I have to believe that the character would do what they do.

Pam did such a good job of research in this series. Gabriel’s character is so believable; he will have you reading with bated breath. I found myself pulling and hoping for him. Crying for him and pulling for him.

Characters should keep me guessing

I do not want to know too early who is the villain, their motivation, or how they are going to get caught. I want to be surprised and emotionally involved in the whole story.

This book had me on the edge of my seat. The story is fantastic and has so many different angles. This book has me so scared; I am amazed I managed to finish reading it. Do yourself a favour, pick up In the Tick of Time today.
