Excerpt from The Weed that Strings the Hangman’s Bag

Ronnie, Between the Cracks #5 is being launched this Friday! You can preorder it now. Learn about Ruby’s last sister and how she fared!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I have been reading a couple more of the Flavia de Luce books by Alan Bradley. Right now, I am reading The Weed that Strings the Hangman’s Bag. Since I’ve ended up reading the few that I have in reverse chronological order, it’s been very interesting to see how much some of the characters have changed since the beginning! Flavia’s family and the villagers have really softened in the later books.

I find it sometimes a curse and sometimes a blessing that I have inherited Harriet’s acute sense of hearing, since I am able, as I am fond of telling Feely, to hear things that would make your hair stand on end.

The Weed that Strings the Hangman’s Bag, by Alan Bradley

Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce didn’t intend to investigate another murder — but then, Rupert Porson didn’t intend to die. When the master puppeteer’s van breaks down in the village of Bishop’s Lacey, Flavia is front and centre to help Rupert and his charming assistant, Nialla, put together a performance in the local church to help pay the repair bill. But even as the newcomers set up camp and set the stage for Jack and the Beanstalk, there are signs that something just isn’t right: Nialla’s strange bruises and solitary cries in the churchyard, Rupert’s unexplained disappearances and a violent argument with his BBC producer, the disturbing atmosphere at Culverhouse Farm, and the peculiar goings-on in nearby Gibbet Wood — where young Robin Ingleby was found hanging just five years before.

It’s enough to set Flavia’s detective instincts tingling and her chemistry lab humming. What are Rupert and Nialla trying to hide? Why are Grace and Gordon Ingleby, Robin’s still-grieving parents, acting so strangely? And what does Mad Meg mean when she says the Devil has come back to Gibbet Wood? Then it’s showtime for Porson’s Puppets at St. Tancred’s — but as Nialla plays Mother Goose, Rupert’s goose gets cooked as the victim of an electrocution that is too perfectly planned to be an accident. Someone had set the stage for murder.

Putting down her sister-punishing experiments and picking up her trusty bicycle, Gladys, Flavia uncovers long-buried secrets of Bishop’s Lacey, the seemingly idyllic village that is nevertheless home to a madwoman living in its woods, a prisoner-of-war with a soft spot for the English countryside, and two childless parents with a devastating secret. While the local police do their best to keep up with Flavia in solving Rupert’s murder, his killer may pull Flavia in way over her head, to a startling discovery that reveals the chemical composition of vengeance.

Goodreads Giveaway for Ronnie

I currently have a Goodreads Giveaway running for Ronnie, book #5 in the Between the Cracks series. (Ronnie is currently available for preorder on Kindle, and will be released soon) Ronnie is a sequel to Ruby, Between the Cracks which won the In the Margin Top Ten Books for Teens award.

The Between the Cracks books have been absolutely AMAZING…

Ronnie was the one child in the Simpson family to escape from the abuse and grow up in a normal home without being bounced from place to place or ending up on the street.

That was what the others all thought.

That was what Ronnie told herself.

When Ronnie could remember.

Excerpt from Guilt by Jonathan Kellerman

Christmas is done and we are into the new year. Have a look at my New Year’s post for some inspiration on planning to make 2018 great!

Later this week, I plan to blog about what books I am expecting to publish this year. And I have a Goodreads giveaway for you to enter… so stay tuned…

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am reading Guilt by Jonathan Kellerman. I think this is my second Kellerman book, and I am enjoying the twists and turns as they close in on the killer and figure out what really happened.

Resting in the new too clippings was something wrapped in fuzzy cloth—a satin-edged blanket, once blue, now faded mostly to tan and pale green. Purplish splotches on the satin borders.

Something worth wrapping. Burying. Excited, Holly lifted the blanket out of the box.

Jonathan Kellerman, Guilt

In an upscale L.A. neighborhood, a backyard renovation unearths an infant’s body, buried sixty years ago. Soon thereafter, in a nearby park, another disturbingly bizarre discovery is made not far from the body of a young woman shot in the head. Helping LAPD homicide detective Milo Sturgis to link these eerie incidents is brilliant psychologist Alex Delaware. But even the good doctor’s vast experience with matters both clinical and criminal might not be enough to cut down to the bone of this chilling case. Backtracking six decades into the past stirs up tales of a beautiful nurse with a mystery lover, a handsome, wealthy doctor who seems too good to be true, and a hospital with a notorious reputation—all of them long gone, along with any records of a newborn, and destined for anonymity. But the specter of fame rears its head when the case unexpectedly twists in the direction of the highest echelons of celebrity privilege. Entering this sheltered world, Alex little imagines the macabre layer just below the surface—a decadent quagmire of unholy rituals and grisly sacrifice.

Excerpt from A Prison Diary

I hope you had a good Christmas! If you got a new Kindle or ereader, make sure you take a look through my stocking stuffer and advent calendar posts for some great deals.

On to my teaser. Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I don’t read a lot of memoirs, but this is one that caught my eye. Jeffrey Archer is a bestselling fiction author, but he has also published nonfiction accounts of the time he spent in prison for a perjury conviction. Interesting reading if you want to hear some of the details of life behind bars. I just recently started the first book, A Prison Diary, yesterday.

I think about the verdict, and the fact that it never crossed my mind even for a moment that the jury could find Francis innocent and me guilty of the same charge. How could we have conspired if one of us didn’t realize a conspiracy was taking place?

A Prison Diary, by Jeffrey Archer

On July 19, 2001, following a conviction for perjury, international bestselling author Jeffrey Archer was sentenced to four years in prison. Prisoner FF8282, as Archer is now known, spent the first three weeks in the notorious HMP Belmarsh, a high-security prison in South London, home to murderers, terrorists and some of Britain’s most violent criminals.

On the last day of the trial, his mother dies, and the world’s press accompany him to the funeral. On returning to prison, he’s placed on the lifer’s wing, where a cellmate sells his story to the tabloids. Prisoners and guards routinely line up outside his cell to ask for his autograph, to write letters, and to seek advice on their appeals.

For twenty-two days, Archer was locked in a cell with a murderer and a drug baron. He decided to use that time to write an hour-by-hour diary, detailing the worst three weeks of his life.

When A Prison Diary was published in England, it was condemned by the prison authorities, and praised by the critics.

Books in your Stocking – A Christmas Eve Book Flood

I love the Icelandic tradition of giving books on Christmas Eve and spending the night reading, a practice known as Jolabokaflod, or the “Christmas Book Flood.” What a great idea! Just to make sure that you have something to read for Christmas Eve, I have pulled together a collection of free, $0.99, deeply discounted, or Christmas-themed books for your Christmas Eve or holiday season reading!

Whether you read them on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, I hope you’ll pick up a few of these books and have a wonderful time.

But things aren’t as rosy as she would have everyone believe, and the road ahead of her is filled not only with gangs, drugs, and depression, but other challenges that Ruby hasn’t even imagined.

Mito, Medical Kidnap Files #1

Gabriel has dealt with mysterious medical issues his whole life. Just when he finally thought that they had all of the answers and he was on the road to good health, he is apprehended by DFS on the grounds of medical neglect.

At first, he thought that he would be back home in a few days, once the misunderstanding was cleared up. But when Renata tells Gabriel her crazy conspiracy theories, Gabriel feels the first pangs of doubt. Is there really a conspiracy? Will he ever be able to get well and go back to his mother, or is he doomed to be another guinea pig for Doctor De Klerk?

Deviation, Breaking the Pattern #1

“You’re a good kid, Henry.”

Everyone knew that he was a good guy; geeky, responsible, hard-working.  Henry has had a lot to deal with in the past.  Now, as he should be focusing on his schooling and preparing himself for the future, he is hindered by abuse, the challenge of raising his baby brother while dealing with his mother’s deep depressions, and the return of a ghost from the past Henry has tried his best to forget.

But it seems that Henry can’t avoid the nastiness of life.  As hard as he tries, it’s one more disaster after another as his life spirals out of control.

And more!

[image error] Mismatch, by Tracie Delaney

New Release!

When playboy Rupe Fox-Whittingham wakes up in bed next to a dead woman, he’s charged with murder. His best friend, ex-tennis ace Cash Gallagher, arranges for frosty but brilliant lawyer, Jayne Seymour, to represent him.

Jayne swore off men after her husband’s terrible betrayal. She’s far too bright to make the same mistake twice.

Rupe wants her—and he always gets what he wants. Winning her heart won’t be easy. Still, he thrives on challenge.

[image error] The Witch Who Saved Christmas, by Katie Penryn

Mpenzi Munro and her shapeshifting bodyguard Felix are once again called upon in the fight of good against evil. This time it is Christmas Eve. A vile and evil monster is trying to sabotage Santa’s delivery of Christmas presents to the children of the world.

Penzi wants to stay home and have a family dinner, but Felix reminds her that a witch has to do what a witch has to do. Of course, Penzi does what she has to do with the help of the High Council of the Guild of White Witches.

This story is not a who-dunnit like the other stories in the series, but is rather a tale of how-to-do-it to a nasty monster. It is a stand-alone novella and is a story suitable for reading to or with children. However, the vocabulary is set at an adult level so children may need some simplification, which in itself leads to interaction between parent and child at Christmastime.

[image error] A Very Carrie Christmas, by J.J. Green

Something strange is happening in Lapland. The Northern Lights haven’t shown up for months, which means tourist numbers are down and the livelihoods of the local Sami people are under threat.

Only aliens can be responsible, and as a Transgalactic Intercultural Community Crisis Liaison Officer, it’s up to Carrie Hatchett to find out who they are.

But as Carrie and her bestie Dave try to sort fact from fiction in the frozen Arctic wastes, they uncover more questions than answers.

What mysterious creatures are roaming the countryside at night, reaching up to the stars?

Is the reindeer pee story really only something the Sami like to tell tourists?

How much longer can Dave take it before Carrie’s messy habits make his head explode?

[image error] The Ash Park Series, by Meghan O’Flynn

Three books, one low price!

From book 1:

Ash Park, a run-down suburb of Detroit, might not be the most idyllic place to live, but for Hannah Montgomery, it’s safe. At least, it feels that way until a serial killer starts dicing up women from the shelter where she volunteers.

But the cops are right about one thing: Hannah is responsible. Because she knows who the killer is. Now she must face the fact that she brought a monster with her to Ash Park–and his appetite for blood is insatiable.

Excerpt from Blue Labyrinth

Can you believe it is less than a week until Christmas? Just a few more days left on the Advent Calendar of Books, so hop over to grab yourself a quick treat!

I’ve just finished the first draft of the next book in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series, and I’m getting Ronnie, the fifth book in the Between the Cracks series ready for release.

On to my teaser. Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

My new book today is Blue Labyrinth, a Pendergast mystery by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I haven’t read any other books in this series, but it has some great, eclectic characters and I have been enjoying it. If you like Sherlock Holmes and Ellery Queen, I think you’ll like this one.

Pendergast shrugged free and exited into the sweeping rain, more glass falling away as he did so. He stared ahead at the impenetrable tangle of cars, the sea of flashing lights, listening to the shouts of paramedics and police and the thud of the useless, circling chopper.

The Town Car was long gone.

A long-buried family secret has come back to haunt Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast.

It begins with murder. One of Pendergast’s most implacable, most feared enemies is found on his doorstep, dead. Pendergast has no idea who is responsible for the killing, or why the body was brought to his home. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect crime, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased.

The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California’s Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his own family’s sinister past. But Pendergast learns there is more at work than a ghastly episode of family history: he is being stalked by a subtle killer bent on vengeance over an ancient transgression. And he soon becomes caught in a wickedly clever plot, which leaves him stricken in mind and body, and propels him toward a reckoning beyond anything he could ever have imagined….
