The new Marvel movie for this year that everyone was waiting for! Does it make us happy? YES
Guardians of the Galaxy starts after young Peter Quill is kidnapped by space pirates, the Ravangers. Years later we see Peter being an outlaw, calling himself as Star-Lord and stealing things and getting money by selling them. He tried to sell an orb, which a lot of people in the universe are looking for and Peter doesn’t know why. That’s how he met Gamora, a very skilled assassin (that everyone knows for being Thanos daughter). Gamora tried to take the orb and sell it to another buyer, while Peter tries to take it back. But, there are two ‘guys’ trying to capture Peter (you know, he has a rewards on him), Rocket Raccoon and Groot. At the end the four of them end up in a high security cell. There, they notice all of them hate one guy: Ronan. Ronan is trying to destroy Xandar and the Nova corp. (normal bad guy stuff), and our four ‘heroes’ + Drax decided to escape the prison in order to sell the orb to someone else, so Ronan won’t have it. At some point, after amazing and funny fighting scenes, Ronan gets the orb and plans to destroy Xandar once and for all. Our Guardians of the Galaxy unite and save the day, with A LOT of humor.

I tried to keep the spoilers at the minimum here, not easy. So let me talk about my opinion on this movie. I LOVED IT. It’s the perfect combination of Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly and Cowboy Bebop. The characters were well performed. Chris Pratt as Peter Quill (Star-Lord) was perfect! I’ve seen him in other shows and movies and he is always funny, but here his character has so much more! Funny and with a sad background which make him likable. Zoe as Gamora is amazing. I’m used to see her as this strong female character and she never disappoint me. Dave Bautista as Drax did an amazing job considering he is a wrestler not an actor. I have a blast with Rocket and Bradley’s voice is just flawless in that role! Groot was pure perfection. He doesn’t say much, but he is the strongest, emotional and lovely character of the group. I just loved it. The action scenes were well performed and choreographed. I’m amazed by Zoe’s action moves. The music was accurate, not only cause you need fighting scenes with powerful environment, but because the funny parts needed a soundtrack accurate enough to keep the mood. Speaking of the funny parts: funniest Marvel movie so far. More than Iron Man 3 (which has really good funny scenes). Why are they so important? Cause this entire comic is funny. They are the outlaws, the misfits, the ones that make their own nicknames (oh love star-lord thou) and all the heroic parts are changed unexpectedly by these funny moments.  The onely thing about the movie it’s Ronan. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Lee Peace as Ronan (that man knows his roles!) But Ronan is just a normal bad guy (as Malekid was in Thor 2). Also, we know Thanos is out there and he is the most powerful villain in the universe, so we are hoping to see him and for that, we have to deal with Ronan first. Just a step, not big deal.
As for most Marvel movies, we have little ester eggs we fans loved to see. And I’m really happy to see how they are combining most of their movies in this just one big massive movie production.
In the end, Guardians of the Galaxy is fun, unexpected, has well performances and has stunning action scenes. Definitely worth to see.

Let me talk to you about books.

Specifically, one book. This book.

This book should be a best seller. This book should be required reading for graduating from high school. Before you get that diploma, you read this book.

This book deals with debunking “Neurosexism,” which is a very fancy term for all of that evolutionary psychology bullshit that people spill about those “brain differences” between boys and girls.

This book debunks such myths as:

Boys are better at math than girls
Women make crappy lawyers/business CEOs/etc, as their brains are not cut out for aggression.
Men make crappy counselors/primary school teachers/primary parents/etc, as their brains are not cut out for empathy.
MEN ARE BUILT FOR GOING OUT AND HUNTING WHILE WOMEN ARE BUILT FOR STAYING HOME AND BABYMAKING IT’S NOT SEXISM IT’S JUST BIOLOGY
And many other such myths.

Furthermore, this book covers topics such as:

Neurosexism and gender perceptions in multiple races (as this is not a singularly white experience, just as the western world isn’t a singularly white experience)
Sex discrimination in the workplace, and how women are (or, more often, are not) allowed to behave
How science is used (badly) to support many of these claims
Experiences of trans people, both through interviews and empirical studies.

AND FINALLY - It is all brilliantly researched, cited, compiled - and it’s easy to read! Cordelia Fine actually manages to be funny while writing this, which I think is important, because it makes all of this information infinitely accessible.

Delusions of Gender has reinforced what Oberlin taught me: The gender binary is stupid and arbitrary, and dangerous. And it is a self-perpetuating bias that needs to be addressed to be overcome.

So adding this to my to-read list.

And it’s currently available on Kindle for $3.34.

THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING

Cordelia Fine is a damn good psychologist and this book is approachable and fun to a lay reader, but also PACKED with important research results, clearly conveyed. Strongly recommend this puppy to anyone who is interested in neuropsychology, evolutionary psychology (which is a crock of shit, by the way), developmental psychology, gender, or childrearing. Every new parent should read it. Every misguided gender essentialist should read it. Everybody. It’s so good.

Wait let’s do a book club about this too.
