December 31st, 2014

The new year is about to begin, and I just completed the first 10,000 words of my fourth book. I've signed up for a yoga class and a meeting night. You know, the usual get in shape and improvement sort of things. It's going to be a great year!

Here's wishing you all a Happy New Year. 2015 is going to be full of possibilities. Reach out and grab them!

December 21st, 2014

It's been several weeks since I've posted to my blog. The holidays tend to be all consuming. I am, however, finding that this is a great time to create characters for my books. Wander a crowded mall and watch the people. Their interactions, their expressions, all of it can lend itself to building a vast range of characters. You have the caring parents, the gushing teenagers, and of course, a few grumpy old men. All of them lend themselves to creating new individuals that can expand my character base. It also helps to pass the time in the long checkout lines.

To all of you out there, may you find joy in this holiday season with all of the characters that are near and dear to you.

Happy Holidays!!!

I am just now coming to the realization that my thoughts on parenting have been wrong. I thought that you raised and protected your children. Now, I know that that's only good to a point. I wanted to shelter my children from all of the missteps that I've made in my life. I thought that by doing so, I would help them to have an easier time of it in their lives. I'm learning that easier isn't always the best way to go. They need to be bruised a bit. Life is hard, and we won't be around forever to lend a hand. I love all of them, but they have to learn to stand on their own two feet. Hopefully, they have the wherewithal to weather whatever comes. We'll be here if they want us. But, it's time for us to step back and let them fly. Admittedly, the watching is the hardest part.

The house is clean and ready for company. The oven is preheating, so I have a moment to breathe. Sitting at my computer, I realize that I haven't written much in the past couple of weeks. A knee injury and other matters of life have slowed me down. Now with a few minutes to unwind, I realize just how much I have missed it. After the turkey dinner, followed by the Black Friday chaos, I am determined to get back to the one activity that I love most, writing.

To all of you out there, Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy this time together with your family and friends. As for me, it's time to get back to the kitchen.

November 16th, 2014

Today, I'm coming to grips with a loss. My mother's oldest sister passed away yesterday at 86. Though I haven't seen a lot of her in recent years, I'm realizing just how important she has been in my life.

When I was 16, she gave me a Thesaurus for Christmas. Inscribed in it was a message hoping that I would follow her path of being a writer. I had mentioned my interest to her once, and she had remembered it. At the time, I didn't fully appreciate the gift, but now after publishing three mystery novels, I'm just starting to get it. She saw something in me that I didn't see at the time.

The last time I saw her, she was suffering from dementia. Family members took her around the room and reintroduced her to other family members. When they brought her to me, she smiled and said "writer." It meant everything to me. She remembered.

In the end, my aunt published 13 books. A number of them are displayed proudly in one of my office bookcases beside that Thesaurus. They may not have made it to the New York Times best seller list, but they were quite an accomplishment. From her, I learned that it was the process that was important, the pure joy of creating.

It took me years to decide to write my first novel. And now, I am proud to say that I'm following her example. It's the creativity that's important.

Rest in peace, Marjory Barnum Hinman.

Just spent a glorious week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The water was warm, the skies were clear and the beaches were empty. To me, it's a piece of heaven. I can't think of any place more tranquil. It's the perfect place to write, create or just dream. Check out the sunrise below.
