Snowing Sideways
I sit on my old, worn couch in my tiny apartment with all the windows open, watching the snow fall sideways like some people watch TV. It’s an angry snow, the kind that slaps your face like a jilted lover. The trees stand weary in their white shawls. Any buds that sprouted with hope have withered, shaking fists at the capricious sky.
But snow is beautiful. The beauty is that it falls.
The buds will sprout again. Hope does not freeze.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep…

Happy Book Release Day!
My dear friend and a fantastic writer has their first romance novel out, Welcome to Elmwood Park. I’m doing my best to support them, because I know that it’s good (I helped edit it). It’s going for 99 cents, and worth a lot more
It’s quite risque, but extremely well written. Maybe even better than my stuff (and knowing how arrogant I am, that says a lot

I Was Responsible
I was a good, responsible person today. I crockpotted so i have dinner for a few days, throwing a bunch of meat and veggies in the miracle machine and hoping it doesn’t suck (chicken breast, squash, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, garlic, and artichoke hearts, in case you were curious). I updated my resume and applied for some tutoring jobs. I even took out the trash.
I was responsible. Can I get a reward? An atta boy? A heckin good job? A bowl of ice cream?
A beer? That’ll do nicely

Too Many Cooks Spoil the Books
I’m I’m a serious bind with the sequel to The Watchmage of Old New York, “Cold Iron.” I was talking to my critique group last week and said that I wasn’t getting any useful feedback, or any at all, from them. It’s true. I bring in a chapter, and everyone just says that it’s great, and I know that it’s flawed.
This is going to sound really arrogant…
The problem is that I’m a veteran writer and writer’s coach of almost 20 years (it’s not skill that makes you a good writer as much as practice an...

The First Tattoo
I don’t usually write poetry. I’m a prose guy at heart. But this one has been bouncing around my head for a while. In light of the bomb threats to Jewish daycare centers and the desecration of graveyards, it had to come out.
The first tattoo I ever saw,
Was my aunt’s, a pretty songbird.
On her leg.
But first the one I remember
Was late september
And I was four.
On Rosh Hashanna,
On my friend’s father’s lap
Trying not to nap,
I looked to the side.
An old man, or old to me
White beard, yarmulke...
10 Things I Learned About Life From War Games
I wrote this a while ago, but I still love it.
****
For the last few months, I’ve been playing this xbox game called Happy Wars. I like pvp team combat, and this a great game for it. You get less of the “in it for themselves” snipe…

Ever Tried. Ever Failed…
“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better. –Samuel Beckett
We do not all begin at the same starting line, and we do not all have the same amount or height of hurdles. We will all fail many times in our life no matter what we do, and we will not catch the people in front of us, those that due to some cosmic lottery, were born on a short track to success.
No matter. Failing does not make you a failure. Losing does not make you a loser. Giving up and blaming others...

A Nice Guy?
Far more than once, people have referred to me as “a nice guy.” And I suppose I know what they mean. But there are specific reasons why I don’t consider it true. What people consi…
