Of strawberries and sunshine – Welcome Summer!

Leaves burst from the trees the earliest we’ve seen in our time living in the Finger Lakes region and spring was in full force by the start of May. It was a busy spring season and we’re looking at an equally busy summer. I’ve never relied as much on my planner as I do right now and I doubt that’ll stop any time soon because next year is looking just as busy! I had to even order a 2025 planner before June. So is life! And while it’s a bit exhausting to have so much going on, there’s also a certai...

Welcome spring, welcome updates!

The flowers are blooming too early and the world seems confused. That is how I’m entering this season of spring, a bit befuddled by our odd winter that wasn’t quite wintery enough, and hoping that the weather evens out and returns to normal soon.

I haven’t written blog entries recently. But if I am being honest with myself, and you, dear readers, I haven’t written here in a few years. At least not consistently. Life has gotten busy and with it some pleasures have been pushed aside—blog writin...

At Last, A Publishing Offer

To be completely honest, I’ve never read anyones blogs about how they obtained an agent or how they got that deal. So I’m not very sure how one typically writes about this topic, but here I am, figuring it out as I go along just like with everything else because a lot has changed during the months that have spanned my silence on here. The last time I wrote, I was querying my high fantasy novel. Now I’m waiting for it’s publication.

Wow.

Even writing that still feels surreal. Still, there’...

Smoke and Rain and Passing Days

On July 2, 2012, I began my WordPress account. Eleven years, the longest I’ve maintained a blog.

When I began this page, it was with a desire to take notes about the changing seasons around me. Observances of the abundance of nature and my deep, emotional root to it all. I wanted to be able to remember moments where I felt most alive. I also was hoping to learn to write about the world around me in a poetic nature, so I could expand beyond the fiction writing I have always primarily done.

The Conundrum of Warm Winters

The Finger Lakes is a place of deep, lengthy winters. Known for having snow squalls straight into the month of May. But for the three winters we have lived here, each winter has been a little less snowy and the winter a little shorter. This year has been the oddest in particular. While we’ve had a lot of weather events, the vast majority of heavy precipitation has come in the form of rain. This is good, as it allows us to fill our water shed and makes it less likely we’ll dive head first into a ...

A Winter Daze

I’ve often used this website to write observances about nature but in recent years, it’s become a journal of sorts. This is one of those posts.

More and more I witness people bewildered by the length of the month January. “How is it still January?” they say. “This day has felt like a week.” “I can’t wait for this to be over.” and so on. I’ve often felt similarly to the month, even when I was a child. After all the glitz and glam of the holiday season happening just after the glories of autumn...

Bidding the Old Goodbye and Crafting Goals for the Future

And so the old year died…

There are certainly man year-end posts after Christmas in late December but I feel they aren’t as frequent in the first week of January. I prefer to make my hopes and dreams for the new year known in the new year, it feels more possible once you have the taste of the new year on your tongue.

Many people struggled through 2022 and looking back at that year, I can’t say I completely had the same experience. In fact, the year was relatively pleasant compared to oth...

Wild & Precious Life – Spring/Summer 2022

I haven’t written on my blog in quite some time (obviously) but it has still been on my mind. Life, as life does, got ahead of me. Time, as it does, rushed forward. Suddenly, it seems, we are in mid-September and summer is stepping away. These last few months have felt the most consistently easy, despite having some terrible struggles, but all the same I am here in September surprised we are entering the latter half of the year and attempting to cherish each passing day as there is much change w...

In the Quiet of the Trees

I live in rolling hills that were once mountains, laid down with age to become dwindling and gentle. The valleys filled with water, deep and cold, as the glaciers receded, and left behind water that reflected the sky; giant mirrors placed on the ground.

When summer storms and humid air roll through, the tops of the hills often slip into clouds, much like they do in autumn, and I often find myself on days such as this traipsing through mud and standing water alone amongst the trees.

I lo...
