If you’ve arrived from Fiona Riplee’s Blog, hi and thanks for clicking!

This week Fiona Riplee has asked us to write a mini flash fiction…
In 10 words or less, describe a kiss. Include the words pink & sweet.

Before I post, I have to say this might be the hardest flash fiction I’ve ever had to write. Keeping it to ten words means that every syllable counts, and I’ve type-deleted constantly over the past few days, not to mention the number of times I’ve ‘practiced’ with the husband ;). Eventually I think I got there and distilled the essence of a kiss into a few, important words.

So here, without further ado, is my 10 word flash fiction…

THE KISS
By Carrie Elks
  kissing-lips

A breath, a sigh, sweet hesitation… then pink, soft, forever.

The End

Wow that was hard! Let’s see how author Dani Jace describes her kiss. And don’t forget that Romance Writers’ Weekly is having an amazing Mother’s Day rafflecopter giveaway – to find out more click on the photo below!

If you’ve arrived from J.J. Devine’s Blog, hi and thanks for clicking!

This week Xio Axelrod has asked the question:
Readers always ask “How much of yourself do you lend to your characters?” Here’s your chance to answer. What traits do your characters have that come from you? And if not you, someone in your life.

They say that your first book is always autobiographical, which isn’t a huge surprise since we’re often told to ‘write what we know’. However, I have to admit that for me a huge part of the enjoyment of writing comes from writing about characters that are completely different from me, facing different challenges and reacting differently.

In ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Atticus Finch explains that “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” and I think that’s definitely true. For me to understand a character, and to write from their point of view, I have to find myself empathising with them, even if they’re somebody I may not like in real life. For me, the essence of enjoying a story is to be pulled in by the characters.

image

In my first book, Fix You, the main heroine, Hanna, shares a number of superficial similarities with me. We were born in around the same era, we went to the same university, and we like some of the same music. However, that’s where the likeness ends. Hanna, unlike me, is feisty and go-getting, she’s an extrovert at heart who enjoys being the centre of attention. She also makes a number of decisions that I don’t think I would ever make, but for Hanna they made sense, and I wanted to stay true to her character.

image

In Coming Down, part of my Love in London series, Beth is a character I find extremely interesting. A reformed drug-taker, at the beginning of the story she is very weak, only growing into her character as her story progresses. Being the strong, silent type, I also found this interesting. Beth attached a lot of importance to herself from the men she was dating / married to during her life, and though I love my husband dearly, I define myself as more than a wife, even as more than a mother, I define myself as me, which Beth only learns to do towards the end of the book.

image

My latest book, Broken Chords, features Lara–a new mother who is fighting for her marriage. Out of all of my characters I’m probably the closest to Lara. Like me she has a smart mouth, and like me she’s devoted to her child. She suffers from Post-Natal Depression–an illness that I luckily have never suffered from, although I did have some close friends who were affected by this and a lot of the things she does comes from my observations of them.

So, to go back to the original question, all writing has to be based on observation–that’s what makes it believable–but the interesting part of the process is to invent characters who are different from me, who challenge my perceptions and make me question my own prejudices and ideas. As a writer–and as a reader–that is perhaps the biggest joy that a book can give.

So that’s a little walk around in my skin! Let’s see how much author Xio Axelrod bases her characters on herself. And if she does… I have to say they will be awesome characters!

Scoliosis – a journey with my daughter

So this post is going to be a bit different to my others. Not only because it is about something other than books, but because it’s personal and really tells the story of where I am today. And it started on a vacation last summer, when we went on holiday with friends to Spain with our families.
At that time my daughter was 14. She’s a beautiful girl–of course any mother thinks that about their child–but in this case it’s true ;) She’s also becoming a woman, where once she was up and down she’s developed curves, and in her small bikini it became apparent just how strong some of those curves were.
“Is it me or is one of her hips curvier than the other?” I asked my husband, my friend, even my daughter. It was my daughter who told me that her hip had been like that for a while, and that she’d mentioned it to me before. I have no recollection of her mentioning it, although later down the line I truly wished I had.
A couple of weeks later, having returned from our holiday, I took her to our family doctor. She examined her, making her bend over, lean to the left and to the right and immediately sent her for x-rays. Of course we live in the UK, so immediately was actually two weeks later, but at the time we were unconcerned.
That lack of concern only lasted a few days, right until we went back to the doctor. That’s when the diagnosis of Scoliosis was given. For those who don’t know what Scoliosis is, it’s a curve in the spine. It can come in many forms; c-shape, s-shape, it can be a small bend or a large one.
I’d heard of Scoliosis before, and even this is down to my bookworm ways. Back when I was a teenager myself I was a Judy Blume freak, and remembered her book ‘Deenie’ which heart wrenchingly portrayed the journey the protagonist took from learning she had scoliosis to having to wear a disfiguring brace during her teenage years.

Before the appointment I did some research. The best case scenario was being monitored–this would mean that the curve wasn’t too big and that it would hopefully get no bigger. After that the options were bracing (for those who were still growing) which wouldn’t make the curve get any better, but also would ensure it didn’t get any worse.
And for those who had curves of 50% or more–open back surgery was really the only remedy.
Of course we hoped for monitoring.
The night before her specialist appointment we stayed in a hotel near Cambridge. The appointment was at Addenbrooke’s, a university hospital, commonly known as one of the best centres for scoliosis in the country. So we got up nice and early on the day and made our way through the busy streets of the city.
Once we’d checked in, our first stop was the x-ray department. Expecting to be waiting for a while, I sent my husband to get us both a coffee. While he was gone, we were called into the x-ray room, and I stood behind the screens and watched the x-ray photo slowly upload onto the computer. This is what I saw:

IMG_0432

X-ray showing her 45 degree curve
I was shocked. Not only was it glaringly curved, I could tell it was worst than the last x-ray. Her s-shaped spine was getting worse.
An hour later we were sitting with the specialist, who told us that back surgery was really the only option.  We listened as he explained this would involve around a 5 hour operation followed by a night in intensive care, a week in hospital and around 2 to 3 months of recuperation at home. All at a time when she will be taking her exams, applying for colleges and trying to be the thing she really wants to be–a normal teenager.
I was hit for six. My daughter, however, took it all in her stride. She’s always been amazingly strong, but her reaction surprised even me. She agreed that the operation was the best choice, in spite of the limitations it would put on her in the short term, and immediately started planning how she would manage to study for two months while lying at 45 degrees. And all the while I was trying to hold the tears back (which I managed to do until we got home and I could hide in the bathroom).
So that’s where we are at the moment; waiting for pre-op assessments and for a date for her surgery. Once those are done we should get a date for surgery, and that’s when the real worrying begins.
In the meantime the heroine of my next book just happens to have scoliosis. She’s an adult–not a teenager–and she’s also a surprisingly strong survivor. Which I know my daughter will also be. Writing can not only be cathartic it can also be healing, it can reveal both our fears and our hopes for the future. And I have every hope that my daughter–like my heroine–will grow up to be a survivor.
Because that’s just the way she is.

Lisa Hughston’s life is perfect. With a doting husband, two handsome little boys, and a job she loves as a nurse, she’s done the one thing she always vowed to do: rise above everyone who told her she would amount to nothing more than a high school dropout and drug addict. Just like her mother.

There’s only one problem in her seemingly flawless life … she doesn’t know anything about her husband’s past.

Christopher knows the truth about who he is and where he came from wouldn’t just hurt his wife. It would destroy her. He’s done—and vows to continue doing—everything in his power to keep that side of him buried forever. But when Lisa unknowingly befriends his estranged family, she sends their once perfect life into a tailspin.

Will they survive the fallout when she discovers who he really is and the secrets he’s been hiding?

excerpt

Long Lost Family (An Unedited Excerpt)

The shuffling near the front door caught her attention, but Lisa didn’t turn around. Tensing, she clung to the couch in an almost futile attempt to gather strength for the fight she knew was coming.

“So you’re really not letting me see the boys today?”

“You lied,” she whispered, her voice thick and hoarse from tears. “Is Christopher even your real name?”

Behind her, her husband cleared his throat but didn’t answer. Nothing would dig him out of the hole he’d created, and frankly he was tired of all the fighting.

“It’s funny.” Lisa shook her head, forcing out a humorless laugh. “After all this time and after everything I’ve tried … I still ended up just like my mother. I watched her—year after year, guy after guy losing herself. Changing herself for these losers that weren’t worth her spit. I swore I’d never be like that.” She snapped her head around to face him. Guarded eyes stared back at her. A hard set jaw unflinching and unwelcoming. She’s caved to that look dozens of times over the years, but today, she refused to back down. “Then you came along. You are the one who wanted a wife, and a family, and a home. You’re the one who asked me you marry you. Everything you’ve ever wanted I’ve given you. Everything I do, every breath I take revolves around you and the boys. All you’ve ever had to do was tell me the truth. That’s all. I’ve done everything for you and you couldn’t do this one thing for me.”

“Would you have said yes?” Christopher’s deep voice cut through the moment. “If I’d told you—if you had known What I’d done. Where I’d come from, and who I was. Would we have had all of this?” He gestured around the room. A broken picture frame still lied on the ground. “Would you have married me then? Would you have had my children knowing the blood that would run through their veins? Would you have fought to make a life with me? Tell me now that my past wouldn’t have made a difference, and I’ll get on my hands and knees and beg for your forgiveness.”

“No,” Lisa admitted after a long, reflective stretch of silence.

“Then stop demanding an apology we both know you don’t deserve.”

“An apology I don’t deserve?” she repeated in shock. The words echoed in her ears, rattling her brain and shattering every shred of desire she had left to deal with this version of her husband—this stranger that had infiltrated their lives. Six months ago, he would have moved heaven and earth to make up for something asinine like forgetting the milk on his way home from work. Now, after being faced with their very existence being a lie, she wasn’t worthy of getting a simple ‘I’m sorry.’

“I would say I don’t even know who you are anymore, but the truth is I never did, did I?”

Excerpt
(Iris Alden POV)

“What are you doing here?”

It’s Carter freaking Blackwood. Of course.

He smiles that ridiculously bright, white smile of his and lets out a soft snicker. “I’m fixing a floor for a friend, what are you doing here?”

It’s completely obvious what I’m doing here, seeing as I’m carrying two huge trays of sugar cookies in my arms.

“A friend? You just moved in. How do you have friends already?” I say it a bit harsher than I probably should but honestly, how does he have friends already?  James and I were here a good six months before people started really talking to me.  It was a year before I could call any of them friends. The edges of Carter’s mouth turn down and his head dips to one side as his shoulders hunch then settle.

“People like me, I guess.”

The smug look on his face is enough to make me want to slap it.  Or kiss it.

Wait. Not kiss it. I didn’t mean kiss it. Why am I staring at his lips?

“People who don’t want to kill me that is.  Are you okay?”

I blink, and search my brain, but I’m still not quite sure what to say to him, so I extend my arms. “I brought cookies.” As soon as I say the words, I hear them. I sound ridiculous and Carter’s bright eyes crinkle with amusement.

He closes his lids and he breathes the baked goods in. Then hums. The sound of his voice sends a vibration through me and I shiver. I am eternally grateful that he doesn’t see it happen.

His eyes open slowly. When they reach mine, I’m glued to his stare like a deer in the headlights.

“Those cookies smell really fucking good, Iris.”

The bedroom eyes catch me off guard and my mouth falls open so I snap it shut. I’m a buffoon with no ability to speak.

“Can I have one?” He reaches out and I balance the platter with one hand, then slap his fingers with the other while I find words. A word that is.

“No.”

“Ow.” He pulls his hand away, like a child getting reprimanded, only when we make eye contact again, he doesn’t seem child like to me.I wouldn’t say he’s angry. He doesn’t exactly laugh, either. And his eyes gleam as he stares at me. I hate his eyes almost as much as I hate his teeth. Maybe

more. Dammit, I’m staring, again.

“They’re for Ally’s class,” I tell him. “Fundraiser, I mean bake sale.” I fumble my words. He’s so frustrating.

nobodysangelbanner

NA Cover

In this evocative new series from author Sarah Hegger, a woman returns home after a long absence—and wonders if two wrongs really can make a right…

Nine years ago Lucy Flint ran away to Seattle, taking her friend’s boyfriend and leaving her high school sweetheart without a word of explanation. Now she’s back in Willow Park, Illinois, to help care for her ailing father—and it’s no surprise that her ex, Dr. Richard Hunter, is still angry.

Still, she’s a different Lucy now. Sober, wiser, ready to make amends to the long—make that very long—list of those she mistreated during her wild younger days. Falling for Richard all over again would mean wreaking havoc in both their lives and possibly squandering her opportunity for redemption. Nobody’s Angel is the first in the Willow Park Romance series by Sarah Hegger, and I was fortunate enough to be given an ARC copy to read and review. The book tells the story of Lucy Flint, a woman who returns to her parents’ home in a suburb of Chicago years after she left under a cloud. From the beginning we realise that Lucy’s return is going to ruffle feathers; from the way she’s being counselled into making steps by her sponsor, Mads, to her almost knocking over of her ex in the middle of a snowstorm. Lucy clearly knows how to make an entrance, even when she’s trying to fly under the radar.
The story is beautifully written, and seamlessly brings together Lucy’s past–where she managed to hurt a lot of people with a series of bad decisions–with her present, where she’s trying to make amends to those she hurt the most. Sarah Hegger doesn’t gloss over any of the chaos Lucy caused, nor does she make excuses for her character. She simply shows that everybody deserves a second chance, and everybody can grow up to be a better person, and that’s why I found myself falling in love with Lucy Flint.
And then, of course, there’s her love interest. Nobody adores a second-chance romance more than I do, and I loved the way that Lucy reconnected with Richard, her ex-boyfriend, and her father’s doctor who happens to live across the road. From the start, and despite their bitterness, the connection between the two of them was palpable, and I loved the way they were drawn to each other.
This book is more than just a love story, though. Serious issues are touched upon; alcoholism, ageing parents, the way we become carers as they grow older. All of these things are treated with care, never exploited, and it made me love Sarah Hegger’s writing even more than I ever did.

Sarah

Born British and raised in South Africa, Sarah Hegger suffers from an incurable case of wanderlust. Her match? A hot Canadian engineer, whose marriage proposal she accepted six short weeks after they first met. Together they’ve made homes in seven different cities across three different continents (and back again once or twice). If only it made her multilingual, but the best she can manage is idiosyncratic English, fluent Afrikaans, conversant Russian, pigeon Portuguese, even worse Zulu and enough French to get herself into trouble.

Mimicking her globe-trotting adventures, Sarah’s career path began as a gainfully employed actress, drifted into public relations, settled a moment in advertising, and eventually took root in the fertile soil of her first love, writing. She also moonlights as a wife and mother. She currently lives in Draper, Utah, with her teenage daughters, two Golden Retrievers and aforementioned husband. Part footloose buccaneer, part quixotic observer of life, Sarah’s restless heart is most content when reading or writing books.

She loves to hear from readers and you can find her at any of the places below.

“What do you do the rest of the week?”

“I’m a good girl. I go to bed early.”

“Alone?”

My heart sped at that question. It was loaded, obviously, but the way he put it out there so soon seemed genuine.

“Alone with my thoughts.”

“Alone with your thoughts,” he repeated, slowly nodding his head. “You use your right or your left hand for that?”

I coughed out a laugh. Dirty boy. “You seem very interested in my bedroom habits, Mr Cartwright. There are some things a girl likes to keep secret.”

“I bet you use your left hand,” he carried on, as if I hadn’t spoken. His voice lowered, so I had to step forward to hear him.

The next time he spoke I felt his breath tickling at my ear. “I’d pay good money to see you alone with your thoughts.”

She’s come a long way from the penniless seamstress’s daughter sold to the highest bidder, and it wasn’t by trusting a man, let alone an exiled Marquis with more on his mind than slaying the hellspawn . . .
For Dorian Lambert, Marquis de Montalembert, being sent to keep track of Lillian is no mean task. He’s wanted the fiery vixen since he first heard of her five years ago. But wooing the lady while fighting the demon uprising is no easy feat, especially when the lady’s tongue is as sharp as the Japanese sai blades she favors for eviscerating the spawn of hell.
These two will have to learn to trust each other fast, because the demon master is back, and he’s planning to turn Edinburgh into a living hell…

Release Day Blitz – Fly Me to the Moon by Bev Elle

Ticketing agent Jessamy Taylor has been in a dating slump exacerbated by moving her sickly mother into her home. The truth is she’s never gotten over the quirky Dr. Griffin Sanderson whose Obsessive Compulsive Disorder drives her crazy, despite his excellent bedside manner.

Fly Me To The Moon is a love song covered by many, the most memorable being Frank Sinatra. Griffin whistles this tune incessantly, but that’s just one of the many odd quirks Jessamy Taylor either loves or hates about him. Since their ill-fated love affair two years prior, she’s found no one to replace the good doctor.

A date with a self-absorbed jerk that goes awry for Jessamy somehow ends with her in Griffin’s arms. Will the changes he’s made be enough this time, or will secrets tear them apart?

Kyla rasped, “I-Is that Griffin petting a dog over there?”
Jessamy shielded her eyes with her hand and peered across the cul-de-sac. If she’d seen it first, she might have choked on her lemonade, too. Griffin Sanderson was petting the Fowlers’ dog.
“Oh my God, he is!”
“Don’t they have like a gazillion germs or something? And what happened to his glasses?”
“Actually, some would argue that dogs are cleaner than humans. And Griffin got contacts.”
“Finally. You know, Jess, he’s looking kind of good, today. You might want to tap that again since he’s had a makeover and all.”
Jessamy waved her off. “I couldn’t possibly.”
“Why not? The guy I see over there looks infinitely tappable.” Kyla set her drink on the table and folded her arms.
Jessamy sipped her lemonade. “He may look tappable today, but you didn’t have to experience what I did with him as his girlfriend for two years. I should’ve called it quits after our Christmas trip to the Poconos, but I had fallen for him, and like so many misinformed women in history before me, I thought I could change him.”
“You’d think you two would’ve been great together, twin OCD and all. And I thought you said the trip to the Poconos was perfect.” Kyla said, air-quoting the word perfect.
“Everything was perfect up until that trip. We had so much in common. We both loved science fiction. We were both G.R.R. Martin geeks who watched the Game of Thrones show together and nitpicked how the show differed from the books. And even though I had the books on my kindle, he gifted me the hardbacks as a three-month anniversary present.” Jessamy smiled at the memory.
“I remember. You two were enough to make regular folks gag.”
“And you and Carter don’t—with your copious PDA?”
Kyla laughed. “But at least we don’t get all aroused over an episode of The Big Bang Theory.”
“Carter likes that show.”
“Not more than he likes me, though.” Kyla actually twirled her hair.
“Is he coming today?”
“Yeah, after he does his Saturday morning nine holes with his boss. Ugh!”
“Good, we’re going to need all the people we can get to eat up all this food.” Jessamy eyed the tables balefully.
“Look!” Kyla said. “Griffin’s holding the Fowlers’ baby. Now doesn’t that make your ovaries want to explode?”
Jessamy turned her head slowly, knowing the sight would slay her. Griffin never held babies. She took it all in as if in slow motion. Mark was holding their

toddler in place as Jenny was cleaning up the sticky Popsicle he was covered

in, while Griffin was holding the four-month old. He cradled her a bit nervously at first, then he seemed to get his baby-holding legs under him and finally began to smile and talk to her.

Jessamy and Kyla could hear her baby giggle from where they stood. “Aww!” They said in tandem.
