yeah the boy scouts allowing trans boys in is great! but don’t forget that girl scouts have allowed (and encouraged!) trans girls joining since forever and that girl scouts was created in DIRECT opposition to boy scouts as a liberal and feminist organization to symbolize a big fuck you to the gross, conservative misogynist organization that boy scouts was (and continue to be)

I do like that they’re finally changing, but fuck yeah to Girl Scouts for being awesome all the time and probably helping force the Boy Scouts’ hand, honestly.

The founder of Girl Scouts of America, Juliette Gordon Lowe, was a product of the Post Civil War South and admitted to being racist. But she wasn’t okay with it. She continued to force herself to confront her racism with an eye of self-criticism and to act contrary to her learned behavior. One time there was a parade where the local Girl Scouts were invited to march. At the time segregation was the norm and when the black Girl Scouts asked to participate the white troop leaders objected. They took their argument all the way to Juliette Gordon Lowe, expecting her to back them up, but Juliette Gordon Lowe supported the black Scouts and said that every girl, regardless of their race or ethnicity, should be allowed and encouraged to participate.

Juliette Gordon Lowe wasn’t perfect, but she always tried to better herself. She wanted the organization to do the same.

Now that’s how you do it. Self awareness, and holding yourself accountable. Damn.

After designers refused to dress her for the Oscars, Melissa McCarthy launched her own clothing company

“When I go shopping, most of the time I’m disappointed,” McCarthy said in the July issue of the magazine. “Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers — very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people — and they all said no.”

Instead, McCarthy walked the 2012 red carpet in a dress by Marina Rinaldi, a designer available at high-end deparment stores. While she looked great in the frock, the fact that designeers were unwilling or (even more implausable) unable to design a dress for the A-list star says a lot about the stigma still attached to plus-sized fashion.

I do not know the individual involved in this, but, as an EMT, I feel compelled to post things like this.  Wear a damn helmet, guys.  I know you may think you look awesome and all the ladies will love how reckless you are, but you’re honestly just demonstrating just how little you value your own life.  I know this horse has been absolutely beaten to death over the years, and I’m sure that my words won’t change some of your minds, but just look at the damage sustained by that helmet.  Now imagine if your face was put through the same situation.  While the helmet merely had part of it ground away by the sheer friction involved, your skull would be pudding.  End of story.

TLDR Version: Wear a freaking helmet.

Helmets save lives.

Got in a bike accident once, my helmet literally had a giant crack running down the side. Never ride without one.

I work for auto insurance and I have to reinforce this. I can’t tell you the number of claims I have had from people not wearing proper gear. Sandals and motorcycles don’t mix! Wear your helmet and other gear!

“I told Miyazaki I love the “gratuitous motion” in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes people will just sit for a moment, or they will sigh, or look in a running stream, or do something extra, not to advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are.

“We have a word for that in Japanese,” he said. “It’s called ma. Emptiness. It’s there intentionally.”

Is that like the “pillow words” that separate phrases in Japanese poetry?

“I don’t think it’s like the pillow word.” He clapped his hands three or four times. “The time in between my clapping is ma. If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it’s just busyness. But if you take a moment, then the tension building in the film can grow into a wider dimension. If you just have constant tension at 80 degrees all the time you just get numb.”

- Rogert Ebert, on Hayao Miyazaki (via paintgod)
