Disabled samba dancer inspires Brazil

SAO PAULO—A woman who lost her right leg to bone cancer as a child is gathering attention in this coastal city with her rousing version of the samba as the Brazilian Carnival approaches.

“Carnival is a joy,” says 19-year-old Haone Thinar, who belongs to the Sao Paulo-based samba team Mancha Verde. “It’s an annual event where we forget all our troubles and devote ourselves to dancing.”

When she was 8, Thinar had most of her right leg amputated to prevent bone cancer from spreading to other parts of her body. She had loved to dance since she was a toddler, and refused to give it up, so she learned how to dance with her remaining leg and forearm crutches.

“Some people look at me with questioning eyes, apparently thinking, ‘What are you doing here?’ But I don’t care,” she says.

In January, Thinar appeared on a television program, in which star dancers of samba teams compete. Although she did not win the competition, she received an e-mail from the mother of a girl with disabilities who had watched the program.

“I was encouraged by you,” the message said.

Thinar works at a marketing company while studying at a high school. She says her dream is to one day become an actress or fashion model.

I’m guessing that you wouldn’t if you’re a sane individual.

The cops wouldn’t overlook your crime because of what I’m wearing because that’s silly. I wasn’t literally asking for you to kill me based on my choice of clothing. Who would take that defense seriously?

My friends wouldn’t blame me for being murdered and my killer would be behind bars almost instantly.

So, why is it okay to rape someone because they’re wearing revealing clothes? Why does THEIR choice of clothing excuse THEIR attacker?

It doesn’t. You’re silly if you think otherwise.

This guy is a fucking champion. That’s so incredible that he lost that much weight. And fuck yeah, you gotta love the skin you’re in, even when it’s really fucking hard.

All those pictures beautifully toned people, not everybody is gonna end up like that. But keep pushing yourself to be the best you can be anyway, because you are totally fucking worth it.
