Portrait of William Blake (1807) by Thomas Philipps

William Blake (1757-1827) was an English artist, poet, philosopher, who created a unique form of illustrated verse and was one of the most remarkable figures of the Romantic period. His poetry, inspired by mystical vision, is among the most original, lyric, and prophetic in the language. One of the most singular and gifted of all British artists.

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, is located off the north-eastern coast of England. It became a centre for Celtic Christianity under the Saints of Aidan, Cuthbert, Eadfrith and Eadbert, with a reputation for healing the sick, using herbs.

The old English name was Lindisfarena, as recorded by the Parker Chronicle and Peterborough Chronicle of 793. How the name Lindisfarne originated is unknown, but it may be Celtic in origin.

Andrew Johnson - Do you know where he was in September 1866?

Reblogged from Victoria Adams' Reading Alcove:

Here is a history mystery for my readers. My friend, Edward Frank, is working on a documentary film about the Black Guides of Mammoth Cave. In his research he came across a reference that Andrew Johnson had visited the cave during one of his campaign swings. However, he cannot find any confirmation. Any one care to jump in and help sort this out?
