Would You Fight For Something for 16 Years?
I began writing The Imaginary Voyages of Edgar Allan Poe in 2005. Back then, it was titled The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allan Poo, and I intended to tell the story as a webcomic. I didn’t really have an idea of an ending, I just thought it would be a fun story to write. I never dreamed it would become what it’s morphed into, nor did I dream that I would knuckle down and press on for 16 years to see it completed. From a Harvey Award-nominated webcomic, to two profitable Image graphic novels… t...

Where Are They?
I was doing some research with the National Crime Information Center, and some of these statistics had my head reeling. Do you realize that in 2020, 268,884 girls and women went missing in the US? Over 90,000 of them were Black. I was taken aback at this percentage— in fact I am still having a hard time coming to grips with this fact, as this was two years ago. How many more have gone missing?
During my research, I came across a website, Our Black Girls, which is dedicated to getting the word ou...

The Imaginary Voyages in Academia
It always brings a smile to my face to see my stories pop up in academia. Graphic novels are an invaluable tool for educators, and I’m so glad to see them embracing the medium. This particular entry is from an essay written by Derek Parker Royal titled, Illustrating the Uncertainty Within. It is an extremely insightful and thoughtful essay and well worth reading. I’ve included excerpts about my book. You can purchase the book HERE in paperback or Kindle editions.
This entry from Royal demonstrat...

Happy MechMonday!
Nothing makes Mondays better than humans destroying robots, right? This is a gorgeous splash page by artist Riccardo Latina from our story, SCAPEGOAT, that appeared in Markosia Comics' FTL ISSUE ONE, published in July of 2011. Over the years I've been asked many times if I had plans to continue this robot versus human serial. The simple answer is that I will never rule anything out. I had a lot of fun with this story, and Riccardo is a phenomenal artist that I really enjoyed working with.
You can...

Jack the Ripper's Diary?
Just when I think I have made up my mind about who Jack the Ripper was, a new theory comes along that has me not shaking my head, but seriously questioning everything I thought I knew about this man.
Dwight and I were totally taken aback by a documentary we watched last Sunday night on Amazon Prime. The title was Jack the Ripper, and it is a documentary that painstakingly chronicles the research of a diary reputed to have been written by the notorious killer himself: James Maybrick. The documenta...

SUPER RARE Hurricane Katrina Anthology
The year was 2005. The City of New Orleans had become a watery tomb in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. I will never forget the images on my television screen. They were heartbreaking and disturbing. I had to do something. So me and a bunch of buddies decided to create a benefit anthology to contribute to the relief effort that was underway. My story was quirky (imagine that) and fun. It’s titled "TCB," and I hope you like it. I’ve also included the cover art by comics superstar, David Mack. It wa...

Morbid Monday?
In 2005, buddy Chazz Demoss asked me if I wanted to contribute to a new horror magazine that he’d be releasing that year. Of course, being a relative newcomer to the pro comics world, I leapt at the chance. So, for the first issue, I teamed up to create a story called “A Zombie’s Tale” with sensational artist, Aadi Salman. Chazz dug the story, so he asked me for another story for the second issue. I was working a quirky black humor story called “Morbid Milton,” so I showed it to him. He loved it...

Old Man Irving?
Check out this brilliant image by superstar artist, Tara Billinger! This is one of the very earliest images of Little Poe and Irving Rat. Notice that Irving started out as a much older character. Like a wise old rat, rather than the younger, swashbuckling Irving we see in The Imaginary Voyages of Edgar Allan Poe. Both are totally cool, don't you think?

The Time I Was Nominated For a Harvey Award...
2007-2008 was huge for me. That’s when I was nominated for a Harvey Award. The reason it was such a great honor to me is that, unlike that other award (*wink wink*), nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. In other words, my peers. They remain the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals...
