Indie Spotlight: Deadly Heroics

I love romantic suspense, particularly those featuring anti-hero heroes. There is something about a dangerous alpha male falling head over heels for a strong, smart, endangered heroine. Happily, Tawna Fenske doesn't confuse snarky or nasty with strong. Jen's character is well drawn as an astute business woman reeling from a series of misfortunes. Dante is everything she needs including his soft-heart hidden beneath his trained assassin's exterior.

He’s a hired gun. A hardened killer. So how’d he end up bottle-feeding lambs for his best friend’s sister?

Dante didn’t set out to deceive. His favor for a pal in prison got him this farmhand job, and Jen needs help guarding more than her blueberries. CHRYS Sneak Peek 3

April was not quite as productive as I hoped in terms of catch-up writing for CHRYS. It appears that release will be late summer to early September rather than early summer as originally projected. In the meantime, her is a sneak peek. It has not been through my editor. All typos and errors are my own.

Under Verity’s watchful gaze, Chrys slotted the crystal into the center of the controller, careful to avoid contact with any of the blade-sharp spurs. With a gentle tap, it locked into place. Using forceps, Verity set the controller into the oblong testing module.

Picking up his slate, Chrys nodded. Verity tapped instructions into hers, and lights began to flow along the module. Shoulder to shoulder, they watched the blue lights flash in a sporadic pattern. In a few breaths, the lights stabilized into a series of horizontal streams. Verity glanced at him, her expression of cautious optimism mirroring his emotions. They have worked for days to get this first of three crystals calibrated.

His slate chirped, scrolling symbols confirmed the flow of data and energy. “Seventy percent. Eighty. Ninety-two. One hundred. Encoding fully enabled.”

“Almost.” Verity focused on her slate, worrying her bottom lip with her teeth. “Almost. . . yes. Full integration.”

With a shout of triumph, he grabbed her in a hug. Her peaches and vanilla scent reminded him of the harvest season. Her vibrant form fit against him in the most pleasant manner. Shocked blue eyes met his, her form stiffening. Embarrassed, he stepped away, fumbling for his slate. “I beg your pardon. I was carried away in the moment. It will not happen again.”

Indie Spotlight: Monstrous Love

There is a growing trend in romance, and steamy romance in particular, for 'monster' heroes or main characters. Not the psychological monsters that star in dark romance, but actual monsters; spiders, orcs, and in the case of Lillian Lark's Stalked by the Kraken, an tentacled giant squid. Generally, I prefer more classic monsters; vampires, werewolves and such. The premise of this book was so intriguing I had to give it a try.

I was not disappointed. Quirky, edging into rom-com and erotica in places, it has a strong narrative line, solid character and relationship development, and a suspense subplot that make it an enjoyable read. The only flaw; it is a little disjointed in places referring to events that occurred in other books. I doubt that a spider-like love interest will ever work for me, but I may need to check out an orc or two.

Indie Romance Spotlight: Marriage of Inconvenience

There is something about lords and ladies in historical romance that is endlessly appealing.
There are so many entries in this sub-genre of romance that they tend to run together; not as in a satisfying 'adheres to the tropes' but as in 'a week later I can't remember what it was about'.

Happily, Sorcha Mowbray's Lustful Lords hits that sweet spot between reliable and creative with just enough modern sensibility for the steamy bits to be steamy.

Chrys shifted his weight, feinting right. His grinning opponent kicked into the opening. Chrys grasped the flying calf with his left hand, and slammed his right into the smug warrior’s shoulder, tossing him on his ass.

With a sharp whistle, the training master called a halt. “Well done, Chrys.”

Leaping to his feet, Rigel frowned. “That was a brawler’s tactic, not one of a warrior.

Expression stern, the training master asked, “Unusual move. Where did you learn it?”

Chrys maintained his neutral expression. “From the free-traders. They employ a version of free-boxing.”

Rigel’s derisive laugh was echoed by several others. “Free-traders are no better than common brawlers.” He glanced at the training master. “I should cry foul.”

The master shook his head. “This is an expert class. Any move that does not risk maiming or use teeth is permitted.” He glanced toward Chrys. “It is the mark of an able combatant to mix martial disciplines for the greatest advantage.”

His laughter fading, Rigel made a show of gathering water and a towel before exiting.

As seigneur Marco’s protégé, Rigel equaled Chrys’ cartel rank. Rigel was also a warrior and distant kin to Monsignor Lucius, where Chrys was but a commoner. Rigel expected Chrys’ deference. The warrior had no idea what to do with Chrys’ bland courtesy. For truth, Chrys had yearned to lesson more than one smug warrior over the years, but this was the first opportunity since he achieved protégé status and could act on his impulse.

A soft laugh accompanied a hand settling on his bicep. Sky blue eyes filled with mischief gazed up at him. “You enjoyed that far too much.”

Verity. Average height, with her black curls and lustrous complexion, her doll-like appearance had caused more than one to underestimate her sharp mind and combat fierceness. The Iron Hammer engineering associate had been Chrys’ friend and ally since his fourth season as a Blooded Dagger apprentice. She is one of the few who can see through his carefully controlled expressions. “He insists on underestimating commoners. He did naught to aid Blythe, treating her as no more than a servitor.”

Verity’s expression dimmed. Along with all those of Thornscore, she mourned the death of a woman who died defending Lilian. “She was a mere apprentice, but she had two years of service with Seigneur Marco and Bright Star when Rigel joined the cartel. He had naught to offer and was too proud to learn aught from her. Could you strike harder the next time?”

“It would give me great pleasure.” Grabbing water and a towel, he inclined his head toward the door. “Another class will be coming.

Spotlight Indie Romance: Space Age Special Forces

Special Forces stories are hugely popular because who doesn't love a deadly protector? And all that action/adventure blended with the romance? I've enjoyed several volumes in Susan Hayes's The Drift: Astek Station series and was pleasantly surprised to discover her Nova Force spin-offs.
