Thorn Bearer: Sneak Peek 2

My wonderful editor -- who has been with The Twelve Systems Chronicles from The Cartel through Shield Bearer -- is unable to schedule Thorn Bearer until summer 2021. After almost a decade, I cannot imagine anyone else doing justice to the final volume of this series. As a result, the release date is moving from June 2021 to October 2021.

There is always the possibility that her schedule will open up sooner. I will continue to push to finish the Thorn Bearer manuscript as soon as possible, so it will be ready and waiting if there is an opportunity to move up the release date This passage has not been reviewed by my editor. All errors are mine.

Lucius stalks through the commerce center seeking his quarry. The familiar dark red warrior’s queue trails down a jacket of the pale, slate-blue suit he gifted to Lilian with after their reconciliation the dry season gone. It is one he favors, but if she seeks to mollify him, it will require a great deal more.
She turns at his approach, her expression turning wary at his expression. "Monsignor?”

“With me.”

The small conference chamber has no window. The three occupying it vacate without a word. Not bothering with a chair, he braces against the table and pulls her between his legs. Her gray eyes are dull and shadowed. “Chin voices you are unwell.”

Her spine stiffens and her eyes drop. “It is but stellar malaise. It will be well in a few days.”

He grips her chin to tilt her gaze to his. “And dreams evil enough that you requested a potion? Her mouth opens and his temper flares. “Deny it not. It is ill enough that you must be absent from my bed. Now you avoid meals. We have had naught but public discourse since yesterday morn. I must learn from Chin that something is amiss.”
Her shoulders slump, lines of stress at her mouth and eyes. “It is not . . . I.” She takes a deep breath. “I am out of sorts. I lack appetite and my mind is slow.”

Her gray eyes hold determination. “When I am with you all I wish is to crawl into your embrace and cling. It is not fair to you.”

Demon shit. He drags her close, pressing her head onto his shoulder. “Dear heart. How could you imagine it? Have you need of my embrace, that is where you belong.”

Her lithe form trembles. Her arms slip around his waist as she settles more firmly against him. He strokes soothing circles in her back. “I had no notion. Do you believe me so meager?” Her mumbled reply is lost in his collar. He presses his lips to her head. “Tell me of your dreams.”

“It is the same as it has been for the past sevenday. My protocol review.” It is as he feared. Their transit to the First System is awakening the trauma of her last visit.

Indie Spotlight on Romance: Silver is Sexy

I've featured Marie Johnston's paranormal romances in other blogs with their blend of suspense, paranormal, and smexy. Her foray into contemporary romance with the Oil Kings lacks the good versus bad suspense of her other works, but it makes up for it in entertaining and only mildly angsty family drama. It helps that I love a silver fox and good age gap romance.

I lost my job and got kicked out by my roommate, who happens to be my ex-husband, on the same day.

If I nail one interview, I can get my life back on track. I even get to fly on a private jet with my prospective boss's dad Gentry King, a widowed oil company CEO. We'll make one stop and once Mr. King's business is done, we'll continue on to Denver where I'll hopefully land a high paying job that'll keep me from moving back in with my parents. I'm not even thirty, I can't go backwards in life.

Mr. King is unbelievably attractive and intimidating, but it's a short flight and I never have to see him again after it's done. Only we don't make it to Denver. A snow storm strands us in Wyoming where the only hotel room available has one bed. Unlike me, Mr. King remains undaunted and continues to work remotely at the desk in the room, otherwise ignoring my existence. Until the power goes out and there's nothing for us to do but get to know each other.

Between our age difference, his adult kids, and his former mother-in-law who's still in control of the company, what happens in Wyoming might have to stay in Wyoming.

Indie Spotlight on Romance: A Galaxy Far Away

I am a fan of Ms. Baird's Project Enterprise Series where area 51 is a launch site for an intergalactic space expedition run by the US Military but with an ethos similar to the original Star Trek. Her world building is excellent without overwhelming. Her heroines are kick ass, her heroes (alien and human) are well-developed and alpha without the hole. The romantic development is well paced and believable.

Thorn Bearer: Sneak Peek 1

The work in progress is up to 70K words. The published book will about 150K words. Until then, I glimpse into what is happening with Lilian and Lucius. This passage has not been reviewed by my editor. All errors are mine.

Dazed with wonder, Lilian half listens to Lucius’ children chatter about the Nightingale’s flight. A day gone, she was wretched with the knowledge that Lucius’ love for her had made him vulnerable to attacks on his preeminence and that his mother and sister detest her.

While naught has altered either woman’s opinion, the meager nature of Jurian’s challenge was apparent during the Nightingale’s flight. The Twelve Systems elite offered naught but courtesy and admiration when she took the place of honor at Lucius’ side.

Even more dazzling, he wishes her as consort. A desire that, from what Master Chin voiced, Lady Estella approved. He shifts in his seat, a faint scent of the sea reaching her. Relaxing into the scent, she gazes unseeing through the transport window, the passing city fading to mist.

She shivers. . . her manacled hands unable to reach her shoulders to warm and comfort. Bound and on her knees, she stares into Benmyn’s hate filed countenance as he spits on her.

Lucius presses his knee to hers. “Lilian?”

His dark eyes capture hers. His compelling features fill with concern. “Are you well?”

Well? Shaking off the mist, she nods. “I beg pardon. I believe I dozed off.”

He glances down at her hand gripping the thorn. “An ill dream.”

Relaxing her fingers, she attempts a reassuring smile. “More a memory. It was naught.”

Indie Spotlight on Romance: 2020 Review

2020 was an excellent year for Indie Romance. It was difficult to select the ones I enjoyed the most, but here goes.

Science Fiction Romance

Paranormal Romance
As a fan of Carol Van Natta's science fiction romance, I was thrilled to discover she also delves into paranormal romance. Her Ice Age Shifters series has all the creativity, charm, action, and romance of her science fiction. The series title refers to the type of shifter -- not the time period. Mixed in with the fated-mates trope is a unique vision of the fae, magic, and dark forces that is a page-turning delight. All the books in the series are good, my personal favorites are the Dire Wolf volumes.

A lonely bear shifter meets his mate. She’s running for her life and doesn’t have time for romance.

Pregnant Jackie Breton just escaped from a corrupt feline pack intent on selling her half-shifter baby to the highest bidder. She’s smart, independent, and has a desperate plan to keep her baby safe: Get away from the pride as fast and far as possible.

Trevor Hammond, prehistoric bear shifter, has been rejected by everyone in his life for… being born, basically. Well, except for the beloved aunt who raised him. He’s built a career as an independent trucker, but life would be much better with someone he can hold in his arms and claim as his own.

When Jackie meets Trevor at a truck stop, his bear demands he help her. His aunt even calls with a dire warning: Get Jackie to the magical sanctuary town in Wyoming before she’s killed.
Jackie thinks he’s sexy as hell, but too good to be true. She doesn’t trust shifters. With the feline pride hot on her trail, however, Trevor and the quirky town of Kotoyeesinay might be her only chance for survival. Even Trevor’s indomitable bear may be no match for the dangerous enemy seeking retribution.

Romantic Comedy
Weddings are a staple back drop for romantic comedy or rom-com and, it in that setting, can be a bit predictable. Set it in a paranormal wedding planner company and throw in a more than a touch of suspense? There is nothing predictable about A.E. Jones' Paranormal Wedding Planners except the the HFN between the main characters.

Take 1 wedding. Add fangs, fur, and fairy dust… stir.

A wedding phobic in a family of wedding planners… Alex Bennett’s life is complicated enough, until she discovers their clients aren’t exactly human. Historical Romance
Historical romance often features nobility, whether ancient roman senators, medieval highland lairds, or regency lords. A cowboy for Christmas.
