Indie Spotlight on Romance: Dark Fae and Mafia Vampires

The genre mashups continue with more and more creativity. In the words of InD'tale, Rebecca Rivard's dark paranormal romances are, "Primally exciting, sexy and downright fun."

I found The Fada creative with an enjoyable blend of trope favorites and enough twists and edge to be interesting. The newer, Vampire Syndicate Series has a bit too much new adult angst for my taste, but overall the two books currently published have been well received. With the first books in both series priced at 99c, they are well worth a look.

Indie Spotlight: Paranormal Enforcers

Dark Fantasy. Dirty Humor. Dangerous Romance. The tagline on Angela Roquet's website says it all. Her urban fantasy with romance series, Blood Vice has all those elements and more.

As a police detective, Jenna is all about catching the bad guys. As a reluctant vampire, she finds the bad guys are far nastier than their human counterparts. The romance is slow burn with the heat not significant until book 2, but once it gets going, the romance stays the course.

The author has several other series. I've downloaded the first in the Lana Harvery, Reapers Inc. series, but not read it. Since it's a freebie, I've included it here.

Both series have boxed set offerings that provide a discount over purchasing subsequent volumes individually.

Blood Vice

Detective Jenna Skye bombs her first week on the St. Louis County Police Department's Vice Squad when she's bitten by a vampire in a supernatural brothel. Her day only gets worse from there. Thorn Bearer: Sneak Peek 3

Lilian sinks into the buttery soft leather, unable to avoid comparison to the spartan militia ground transport that carried her to the incarceration halls four years gone. At the time, the overcast sky was an ominous slate green, the distant spires threatening.

This day I live. The sky is clear pale mint, the air crisp, the warm season known as summer giving way to the harvest season.

I will not fall. Four years gone, she was trapped in a transport racing through a claustrophobic tunnel of rusty stalks heavy with bronze seeds and pods. This day, the plains spread out below in geometric patterns of rust, gold, and bronze divided by the slender silver strip of the high-velocity transitway. In the distance, the escarpment rises several hundred feet to a plateau crowned with glittering spires.

I will not fail. Four years gone, she entered the spire shadows in fear and humiliation. This day, she flies in the sun at Lucius’ side having achieved far more than her highest ambitions from those dark days.

I will be consort. Breath by breath she shreds the echoes of the past in favor of the present and the future.

Lucius clasps her hand. His dark eyes hold inquiry.

Lucius loves me. “It is a lovely day.”

The LAT rises as the escarpment nears, a shade between midnight and peacock known as Socraide blue. Glimpses of the Tethys ocean’s indigo waters appear on the horizon. The LAT crests the lower plateau, the rooftops of the warehouse section giving way to modest residential areas. The delicate spires of the upper plateau gain detail and dimension, the soaring structures of stone, metal, and glass glow against the sky. In other two bells, when the sun passes its zenith, the shadows of those graceful spires will crawl across the lower plateau bringing early twilight.

Lucius’ fingers tightened. “Are you chilled?”

Did she shiver in recall of those shadows stealing what little light reached in her cell? “Naught but an echo.”

Indie Spotlight on Romance: Demons, witches, and shifters. Oh my!

Jasmine Silvera may have one of the best author taglines ever: Stories about things that go bump in the night, including headboards.

Her urban fantasy romances can be classed with paranormal romance, but the urban fantasy world building and plot lines drives the narrative more than the intense romances.

Having read the first volumes of both Grace Bloods and Tooth and Spell , I can affirm they can be read separately. Interestingly, although the second series in publication chronology, Tooth and Spell begins before Grace Bloods in the alternate reality Prague of the 1990s. Both series feature the Vogel family siblings, a brilliant and quirky set of magical and magic using humans attempting to survive in a world ruled by ruthless necromancers.

In a nice change up on the trope, Isela, the heroine of the first volume of Grace Bloods is a fearless practitioner of her magic while her older brother (hero of Binding Shaddows is a brilliant and socially awkward geek frightened of his magic.

Both series are perfect for readers who want to dive into a rich and well crafted world with unique and flawed characters, riveting plots, and some banging headboards.

Thorn Bearer: Sneak Peek 2

My wonderful editor -- who has been with The Twelve Systems Chronicles from The Cartel through Shield Bearer -- is unable to schedule Thorn Bearer until summer 2021. After almost a decade, I cannot imagine anyone else doing justice to the final volume of this series. As a result, the release date is moving from June 2021 to October 2021.

There is always the possibility that her schedule will open up sooner. I will continue to push to finish the Thorn Bearer manuscript as soon as possible, so it will be ready and waiting if there is an opportunity to move up the release date This passage has not been reviewed by my editor. All errors are mine.

Lucius stalks through the commerce center seeking his quarry. The familiar dark red warrior’s queue trails down a jacket of the pale, slate-blue suit he gifted to Lilian with after their reconciliation the dry season gone. It is one he favors, but if she seeks to mollify him, it will require a great deal more.
She turns at his approach, her expression turning wary at his expression. "Monsignor?”

“With me.”

The small conference chamber has no window. The three occupying it vacate without a word. Not bothering with a chair, he braces against the table and pulls her between his legs. Her gray eyes are dull and shadowed. “Chin voices you are unwell.”

Her spine stiffens and her eyes drop. “It is but stellar malaise. It will be well in a few days.”

He grips her chin to tilt her gaze to his. “And dreams evil enough that you requested a potion? Her mouth opens and his temper flares. “Deny it not. It is ill enough that you must be absent from my bed. Now you avoid meals. We have had naught but public discourse since yesterday morn. I must learn from Chin that something is amiss.”
Her shoulders slump, lines of stress at her mouth and eyes. “It is not . . . I.” She takes a deep breath. “I am out of sorts. I lack appetite and my mind is slow.”

Her gray eyes hold determination. “When I am with you all I wish is to crawl into your embrace and cling. It is not fair to you.”

Demon shit. He drags her close, pressing her head onto his shoulder. “Dear heart. How could you imagine it? Have you need of my embrace, that is where you belong.”

Her lithe form trembles. Her arms slip around his waist as she settles more firmly against him. He strokes soothing circles in her back. “I had no notion. Do you believe me so meager?” Her mumbled reply is lost in his collar. He presses his lips to her head. “Tell me of your dreams.”

“It is the same as it has been for the past sevenday. My protocol review.” It is as he feared. Their transit to the First System is awakening the trauma of her last visit.

Indie Spotlight on Romance: Silver is Sexy

I've featured Marie Johnston's paranormal romances in other blogs with their blend of suspense, paranormal, and smexy. Her foray into contemporary romance with the Oil Kings lacks the good versus bad suspense of her other works, but it makes up for it in entertaining and only mildly angsty family drama. It helps that I love a silver fox and good age gap romance.

I lost my job and got kicked out by my roommate, who happens to be my ex-husband, on the same day.

If I nail one interview, I can get my life back on track. I even get to fly on a private jet with my prospective boss's dad Gentry King, a widowed oil company CEO. We'll make one stop and once Mr. King's business is done, we'll continue on to Denver where I'll hopefully land a high paying job that'll keep me from moving back in with my parents. I'm not even thirty, I can't go backwards in life.

Mr. King is unbelievably attractive and intimidating, but it's a short flight and I never have to see him again after it's done. Only we don't make it to Denver. A snow storm strands us in Wyoming where the only hotel room available has one bed. Unlike me, Mr. King remains undaunted and continues to work remotely at the desk in the room, otherwise ignoring my existence. Until the power goes out and there's nothing for us to do but get to know each other.

Between our age difference, his adult kids, and his former mother-in-law who's still in control of the company, what happens in Wyoming might have to stay in Wyoming.
