Excerpt

When Dieter Schwarz dragged himself into Wulfie’s Kensington Palace apartment that fine summer day, his ash blond hair was so short that he must have shaved his head recently, as it was about the same length as his scruffy beard. He had one black eye and scabbed-over scrapes covering half his handsome face, and one of his muscular arms hung in a sling. His gray eyes held a feral savageness that looked like he would pick up a rare steak, bite into it with his teeth, and rip it apart while he devoured it.Oddly, Flicka wanted to be the steak.Dieter dumped his only luggage, a small rucksack, on the floor.Flicka’s big brother Wulfram looked up from the book he was reading. “Good week?”“The best,” Dieter answered. From the growl in Dieter’s voice, Flicka could hear that his body still coursed with adrenaline, even though he must have flown home from wherever on a plane for hours. He shucked his overshirt and stretched, standing in a tank top in the entryway. The sling on his arm fell aside, and he flinched when he rolled that shoulder to loosen it.Flicka couldn’t look away from the way Dieter’s round muscles stood out from his arms and shoulders, thick cords and hard bulges that were so different from the sinewy or stocky teenagers she had been living with at Le Rosey. When Dieter moved his arms, stretching out kinks, those muscles flexed and moved under his tanned and sunburned skin. The golden fuzz that covered the top of his chest above his tank top looked soft, and Flicka could think of nothing else but the way it would feel against her palms.Dieter asked. “How were the royal bodyguards, Wulfram?”“Adequate,” Wulfram answered.“I suppose that’s okay.”Dieter leaned over and picked up his rucksack. When he did, the muscles under the thin cotton of his tank top stood out in lumps that Flicka could count. His webbed belt kept his black fatigue pants up, she surmised, because his hips were slim. He looked like could have won any athletic event or beaten any other man on Earth in hand-to-hand combat.Flicka couldn’t breathe. She longed to walk over to Dieter and touch his arms and his chest. She bet that he was warm to the touch, with all those muscles working right under his skin like that. His skin must be silky, or coarse—yes, coarse—and his hands would probably feel callused and rough on her arms.A flush ran over her, a warmth that made her feel heavy and weak.Dieter had his backpack in his large, strong hands, and he was looking right at her. His dark gray eyes settled on her skin, and she could almost feel his gaze. “Good to see you, Durchlauchtig. Her breath seemed to have leaked out of her lungs, and she had to suck in some air to answer him. “You, too, Lieblingwächter.”Dieter walked out of the room, stalking like a tiger. The white album of Flicka’s music school musings slipped from her arms and crashed on the floor.Wulfram looked up from his book, one eyebrow raised.Flicka told him, “I’m going to attend the Royal Academy, here in London.”“Excellent,” Wulfram said, settling back into his book. “You can live here at Kensington with me. Security will be easier with you in London, too.”Yes, she was counting on it.

FLAMES OF FLORENCE

Historical ThrillerDate Published: May 8, 2018Publisher: Diversion Books
 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

"A glittering Renaissance gem of a novel. Donna Russo Morin, a master of her craft, has penned an intricate story full of lush historical detail with a plot that will leave you breathless." —Tasha Alexander, New York Times bestselling author of Death in St. Petersburg
In her final standalone novel featuring Da Vinci's Disciples, Donna Russo Morin delivers a thrilling story of the secret female artists of Florence, under the tutelage of Leonardo Da Vinci, and their heroic, potentially deadly efforts to save great works of art from the infamous Bonfire of the Vanities.
"Illicit plots, mysterious paintings, and Leonardo da Vinci all have their part to play in this delicious, heart-pounding work." —Kate Quinn, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Alice Network
Lorenzo de Medici is dead, and his son Piero has brought war and famine upon the city of Florence. Yet, the glory that is Renaissance artistry grows more magnificent, as does the work of the women known as Da Vinci's Disciples. Now they face their most dangerous challenge, one shrouded in the cloak of a monk.
From the ashes of war, Friar Girolamo Savonarola rises. Some call him a savior and a prophet, a man willing to overthrow tyrannical rulers and corrupt clergy, the Borgia Pope among them. Fra Girolamo is determined to remold Florence from an avaricious, secular culture to a paragon of Christian virtues.
Many call Savonarola a delusional heretic, incapable of anything but self-serving fanaticism. When he sets out to destroy all secular art forms, Da Vinci's Disciples call him an enemy … but not all of them.
"Like a glorious Italian fresco-richly textured and vividly portrayed … Highly recommended for lovers of history, art, and courageous women." —Anna Lee Huber, bestselling author of the Lady Darby Mysteries
"Donna Russo Morin renders one of the most tumultuous periods in Florence's history in bright colors and with vivid descriptions. This tale of a group of determined women standing up for what they believe in … will absolutely resonate with modern readers." —Alyssa Palombo, author of The Most Beautiful Woman in Florence

About the Author

Donna Russo Morin’s passion for the written word began when she was a child, took on a feminist edge as she grew through the sixties, and blossomed into a distinctive style of action-filled historical fiction at a defining moment in her life. As a second-generation American of full Italian descent, Donna combined her historical research with her genealogical studies, finding that her birth name (Russo) and her family roots are traceable to ninth century Florence…the very city in which the Da Vinci’s Disciples trilogy is set.Donna Russo (Morin) is the internationally published author of six multi-award-winning historical novels including PORTRAIT OF A CONSPIRACY: Da Vinci’s Disciples Book One (a finalist in Foreword Reviews BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR), and THE COMPETITION: Da Vinci’s Disciples Book Two (EDITOR’S CHOICE, Historical Novel Society Review). The final book in her Da Vinci’s Disciples trilogy, THE FLAMES OF FLORENCE, releases May 8, 2018. Also this summer, my novel, inspired by our own home state, GILDED SUMMERS: A Novel of Newport’s Gilded Age will also release this summer. Her other titles include The King’s Agent, recipient of a starred review in Publishers Weekly, The Courtier’s Secret, The Secret of the Glass, and To Serve a King.
A 25-year professional editor/story consultant, her work spans more than 40 manuscripts.  She holds a BA in Communications and an A.A. in English Literature.  Donna teaches writing courses at her state’s most prestigious adult learning center, online for Writer’s Digest University, and has presented at national and academic conferences for over ten years.  In addition to her writing, Donna has worked as a model and an actor with appearances in Showtime’s Brotherhood and Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. Currently under contract to a consortium of international producers, Donna has added screenwriting to her professional acumen.
Her sons—Devon, an opera singer; and Dylan, a chef—are still, and always will be, her greatest works.

Tangible Spirits

Suspense, Paranormal SuspenseDate Published:  May 2017
 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png
2018 First Place Best Paranormal Fiction by the Association of Texas Authors
Crowned Heart Recipient from InD'Tale Magazine.
Nominee for InD’tale Magazine’s 2018 RONE Awards in the Paranormal Long category.
“Becki Willis blends bits of history with bits of fancy, and weaves a tantalizing tale you won’t soon forget.”

Reporter Gera Stapleton has a difficult choice to make: write the story of a lifetime, or save the legacy of a town—and a man—she has come to love.
Assigned to an impossible story in Jerome, Arizona about a “ghost” named Mac, Gera knows it’s a fluff piece, at best, until a local man is murdered in the middle of town. When the townspeople blame Mac, she knows the killer is getting away with… well, murder.
Seeing the opportunity for a cover-worthy piece, Gera sets out to find the real killer. In a town filled with curiosities, she befriends a lonely old woman, butts heads with an ornery sheriff, falls for a sexy hotel owner, and uncovers an amazing tale about greed, deception, and family honor. And when the killer targets her as the next victim, an unlikely savior comes to her rescue.
Will she write the story that launches her career? Or will she honor a family’s legacy from the past?
Smart dialogue, plenty of action, and a touch of the supernatural make this a must-read novel. You'll find yourself wondering Is it possible? Are there truly such things as tangible spirits, after all?

From readers like you:"A delicious read. It has ghostly whispers, a brave leading character, bad guys, fun, danger, and love. " ..."Loved this book!" ..."What an interesting, captivating cast of characters!" ..."The setting and the ghost legends all added to the atmosphere. The story was good and so were the characters.

A sizzling and suspenseful romance.

Excerpt

“I know what you’re thinking.” Her accent thickens. “I will get away from this life.”
And why don’t I believe her? Why do I feel like I’ll see a picture of her dead body on the front-page news someday?
The mob.
No getting out.
Not alive, at least.
My eyes open at the rustle of material. She’s lifting my blazer from her lap, holding it out to me, and I catch sight of the angel wings on the inside of her wrist as the jacket sleeve slides up a little.
I almost shut my eyes again as a memory—a recognition of some sort—tries to resurface. It’s like a thin veil has dropped over my mind, taunting me with only fragments, a puzzle to figure out.
“We’re here, Mr. King,” my driver says after opening the glass partition.
I had instructed him to park around the block from the location Gia gave me. Hopefully she won’t be noticed. And as far as we could tell, we didn’t have a tail.
But before she leaves, there’s something I still need to know. “How’d you get involved with the mob in the first place?” I finally take my jacket from her, and she reaches for the handle.
“My father,” she says before getting out and closing the door.
And it’s in that moment everything comes to me.

About the Author

Brittney Sahin began writing at an early age, with the dream to be a published author before the age of 18. Although academic pursuits (and, later, a teaching career) interrupted her aspirations, she never stopped writing--never stopped imagining.
It wasn't until her students encouraged her to follow her dreams that Brittney said goodbye to Upstate New York in order to start a new adventure in the place she was raised: Charlotte, North Carolina. Here, she decided to take her students' advice and begin to write again.
In 2015, she published her first novel, Silenced Memories (The Safe Bet). When she is not working on upcoming novels, she spends time with her family. She is a proud mother of two boys, and a lover of suspense novels, coffee, and the outdoors.

The group of police officers gathered beneath a cloudless sky. A cheerful summer breeze drifted through the towering trees while children skipped rocks on Gray’s Lake. Songbirds twittered joyous tunes in the exact park where destruction had reigned in the cooler months.Squad cars lined the beaten paths, silent after the honorary ceremony. The annual police department luncheon was sprawled on picnic tables while the soft strains of dueling guitars played under a sycamore tree.Never had Joci Dorous felt more Zen as she sat up against a tree trunk, her hands weaving between the clipped waves of Officer Cameron Shearer’s hair. Her eyes surveyed the happy troops of families while charcoal grills sputtered flames. “Did you ever imagine anything like this for your life?” she asked. The man with his head on her lap shifted to face her, but his view was obstructed by her slightly swollen waist. Peeking over, Cameron pressed a kiss to the baby bump as he replied, “No, my mind could never conjure anything so glorious.”Joci’s face broke into a smile, and he leaned up on his elbow. “Are you happy then?” he inquired, kissing the crease of her lips.Catching his face between her hands, she nodded vigorously. “Very much so.”The instant she dropped his chin, Cameron sprang into action and crawled up beside her. Sweat lined his brow as he dug a hand into his back pocket. He knelt before her with a small black box in his grip.Whispers scattered through the crowd around them, but neither paid heed. The sun cast perfect light through the tree’s leaves, enveloping them in eternal bliss.“How about now, Joci?” Cameron said in a loud voice. The shimmer in his brown eyes matched the one in hers. “We’re not well-traveled archaeologists, and I think I’m a few years late, but I love you. If you will have me, I’ll spend every day I live proving we were always meant to be together.”In stunned silence, Joci gaped at the three-carat diamond, impressive for a modest police officer. Without a doubt, his continued alliance with the Del Rossi mob assisted him in the purchase. “Will you arrest me if I say no?” she replied, with a smirk.“Hell yeah!” a heckler who sounded a lot like Quinn called. She swiveled her gaze from the ring back to Cameron. The brilliant colors of his ornate tattoos poked from beneath his police uniform, a perfect collision of worlds. Her eyes darkened to green and a shy grin spread across her cheeks.“Then I better say yes before another woman does,” she managed, her face blushing a shade that would put a rose to shame.Cameron flashed a set of straight teeth and hauled her to him. “Good, because otherwise I owe Quinn five hundred bucks.”Gaping, she swatted the back of his head, but he still possessively kissed her lips. The group surrounding them clapped, a few whistled, and the women cooed over the scene. From beneath the flowing branches of a weeping willow, the scarred onlooker had another reaction. The one emotion that looked best on Joci Dorous was love. Unfortunately for his mangled self, the same happy gleam in her ever-adapting hazel eyes had shone on him not yet seven months ago.But now he was back. Back for his wife and unborn child. Hell would come as a welcoming embrace for Cameron Shearer when Adrian Petosa was finished with him. Taking his life for a short amount of time was one thing, but after the grueling battle Adrian fought the last few months, the mobster turned cop wouldn’t get her eternal devotion too. Not while he breathed. Not while he watched their every move.
