Sparked by Sheena Spaleny

YA Light Sci-FiDate Published: December 16, 2016 Sparked By Sheena

They weren’t supposed to have feelings.
Metal will ClashIn a not-too-distance future, robots composed of metal for bones, electric cords for veins, and synthetics for skin are now available. For purchase. Eighteen-year-old Vienna Avery’s home is going to change forever, now that her mom purchased an Italian Chef Robot to cook and reside in their house.Secrets will UnfoldThe government claimed robots were indifferent, unthinking pieces of metal and elastic—assistance for the help of humans. Vienna never believed much of what the government said. The pieces didn’t always fit. And now Vienna knows why, because she’s uncovered the government’s secret: that robots have emotions, sucking Vienna into the underground world of feeling, thinking, and sovereign robots.Sparks will FlyAlec Cypher is everything a robot is not supposed to be: deep, dark, and dangerously human. And for some reason, he wants to save Vienna from the government’s prying, vindictive eyes. Going forward, Vienna will have to learn to trust robots and battle the growing feelings she never thought possible . . . feelings for the green-eyed, soul-searching robot named Alec.
I never locked eyes with a robot before.Never.Not once.I guess I thought it would feel different. But it doesn’t. Nothing is different. It feels the same, the same as looking into a human’s eyes. I wanted to pry my eyes away but now that I’ve started, I can’t stop staring. Even from this distance, I could tell the robot’s eyes were a honey brown. They are so close to being one of us. But they can’t be. They can never be us. Or at least, that’s what the government says. The robot’s indifferent gaze shifted from mine and it strode toward my neighbor’s Lincoln Town Car. The robot’s gait caught with every third step and the elbow twisted incongruently when it opened the car door—the only telltale signs it wasn’t human. This robot had dark-brown hair, tan skin, and was dressed in a chauffeur’s suit. My neighbor, Mr. Romero, waved at me as he exited the car, and I just stood there, mouth agape and knees locked.Mr. Romero frowned but I couldn’t wave back. I couldn’t move. I was frozen to that spot on my porch with my keys dangling from my fingers and my purse sliding down my shoulder. It was just as the news had said. Everything was. From the eyes, to the nose, the lips, to the hair, it all looked so real. I had never studied a robot that wasn’t on TV; I was always too busy avoiding them. But when they weren’t moving, when they weren’t doing anything, when they were just standing there, they looked exactly like people. Exactly. Together, they disappeared inside the house, Mr. Romero with his stout frame and wiry black hair, and his robot chauffeur. I now lived next door to a robot. The keys felt cold in my hand, and I realized for the last several seconds, my focus had been consumed by the now empty driveway. Leave it to me to do something like that.I opened the door and leaned against it as it clicked shut behind me. Everything was changing. And everything would be different. “Mom, I’m home.” I shrugged off the door and into the family room.“Be right there, Vienna.” “Don’t worry about it,” I called back, hoping mom would leave me alone. “How was shopping? Find anything you liked?” Mom appeared and wiped her hands on her paint-covered overalls. Mom was a die-hard artist. She lived, breathed, and probably ate paint. At a whole head taller than me, Mom still looked great. Forty-five and thriving was her motto. Mom and I had wispy blond hair, pale-green eyes, and a small nose. Unlike me, her hair was cut in a bob-like fashion, the front angled longer, reaching past her shoulders, where mine was always in a ponytail.I shook off my jacket and looked up into Mom’s bright, beaming face. “I only went shopping,” I said, raising my eyebrows. “No need to look that—”“You’ll never guess what I bought.” Mom practically sang the last word, cutting me off.Head throbbing, I sucked in a deep breath and dropped my purse on the couch. “I have absolutely no idea.” I wondered how mom would react if she knew Mr. Romero had bought a robot. “They’ve had nothing but good reviews.” Mom nodded, following behind me as I headed toward my room. “And you and your father are going to love him.”I rubbed my temples. “I’m sure we will.” How could we not get excited about Mom’s latest painting gadget? “What does this one let you do?”Paint with two brushes at the same time?Mom darted in front of me, and spread her arms to block me from going any further.“What’s going on?” I looked from side-to-side. “I named him Robotatouille.” Mom nodded as if that solved everything.“I’m sorry?” I shook my head. What in the heck was Mom talking about? “You named what Robot . . .” My breath caught in my throat. My stomach flipped. “You . . . you did what?” I repeated.Mom’s eyes lit up and suddenly, it was like all the energy in my body had been stolen from me, sucked out, leaving me dry and empty.“N-N-N-o,” I breathed. Mom wouldn’t—“Everyone’s getting one,” Mom said. My legs shook. “Did you know Mr. Romero just bought one yesterday?” Mom asked, face glowing while it felt like mine had lost all of its blood. “And you’re going to love him. Look.” Mom winked at me and stepped back to pull a sandy-blond brown-eyed twenty-something-year-old man from behind the kitchen wall. I couldn’t breathe. Air was trapped in my body, as I stood there, gaping, into this man-robot-thing’s eyes. Brown eyes. Sandy-blond hair. I jerked backward and stumbled into the coffee table. The robot was right in front of me. No. Freaking. Way.

If you are a child, elderly, or have a heart condition, then this story is probably not for you. If you cannot handle torture scenes and/or have a weak stomach, why are you here? This story is not for you. If you have any problems with language, nudity (and descriptions of such), drugs, forced sexual acts (including gore porn), maiming, torture, forced humiliation, self-mutilation, vomit, urine, blood, snakes, character death and more . . . then I cannot stress enough that this story is not for you.✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ Split ~ Michele E. Gwynn

Now that she’s tasted the heady power of controlling her own destiny, she can’t stop!

Down the rabbit hole she goes into a realm of psychotic darkness so deep, she may never find her way out again! Is this new reality real or has Jennifer Jones split?

When the others in the room wake, they form alliances, and Morgan finds herself drawn to rogue biker Slade Rivers. But dependence, for her, has always come with a deadly price.

Those inside the room have secrets too; dark secrets they will go to any length to keep from getting out. When evil rears its ugly head, Morgan will not only have to fight to survive—she will also have to trust. ✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ Blood Crow ~ Cleve Sylcox

As Confederate and Union forces clash in and around the Missouri community of St. Charles, Constance McAdams fights a war of her own. Her mind has been fractured, her heart ravaged, and her soul nearly torn from its very existence. Her husband, Gavin, threatened by a corrupt sheriff and judge, is the binding that holds her together. With a blessing from an old Choctaw woman as her only weapon, she spirals into a maddening world of crows and spirits as she fights the forces pressing in around her.

Blood is Power ~ Ella Medler

“Action!” Dollar shouted. Then, quieter, to her. “Oh, I will enjoy watching your end, Precious. Every single second of it. Every cut, every lick of blood, every morsel of flesh that drops off your body.”

Tequila felt her eyes bulge out of their sockets. She was too terrified to breathe, too stunned to think. And still, the beast walked nearer. He sneered, and then lifted up the scalpel until it was level with his chin. “Don’t forget to scream,” he whispered.

Following his son’s kidnapping and subsequent rescue, Nick Hunter proceeds to track down and eliminate every person involved in the crimes against his family. But where will the chase end? And has he bitten off more than he can chew? Nick discovers a tangled net of human trafficking and corruption, and world-class players with a penchant for disturbed obsessions.

Gritty, dark, chock-full of suspense, this thriller is not for the faint-hearted.✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ Duplicitous ~ Stephanie Nett

They knew he was coming and wouldn't stop until someone was dead.

Robert Dubose planned every second of his revenge against David and Tiana down to the littlest detail. This time he was leaving nothing to chance. Bringing a partner in on the plan almost guarantees his success.

Gavin is on the edge of developing a revolutionary turn for that very magazine, a programme that will no doubt secure the business, maybe forever.

Amidst the excitement and enjoyment of its success, however, is the mysterious and heinous murder of one of their own.

Who can have done it? And why?

Follow the twists and turns and perhaps you can solve the puzzle before they do.

Warnings

some strong language, violence and moderate scenes of a sexual nature.✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ My Daylight Monsters ~ Sarah Dalton

I always thought my demons came out in the day, rather than at night. I’ve never been scared of the dark. I was wrong. The dark makes everything worse.

But will she survive a confrontation with death itself?✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ ✯ North by Northeast ~ Cherime MacFarlane

“Go ahead. Maybe you hitting me turns me on.” His grin widened as he reached over and pulled her back up to him, her wet, naked body pressed to his.

“You’re always turned on, Alex. I could spit on the ground and you’d get an erection.” She rolled her eyes, pressing her palms against his chest. “I’m sure you have some sort of hormone imbalance.”

“And baby, you’re the only one who can keep it under control.” He pressed his lips to hers, and her body responded immediately. She melted against him. Her lips parted for his tongue, allowing him to kiss her back. When his cock stirred to life, nudging against her stomach, Ellie pulled back, prying her lips away from his.

The Voices of Angels by Peggy Jaeger

THE VOICES OF ANGELSbook 4 of The MacQuire Women series
Author: Peggy JaegerOfficial genre of book: Contemporary romance

Love is the last thing Carly Lennox is looking for when she sets out on her new book tour. The independent, widowed author is content with a life spent writing and in raising her daughter. When newscaster Mike Woodard suggests they work on a television magazine profile based on her book, Carly’s thrilled, but guarded. His obvious desire to turn their relationship into something other than just a working one is more than she bargained for.

Mike Woodard is ambitious, and not only in his chosen profession. He wants Carly, maybe more than he’s ever wanted anything or anyone else. As he tells her, he’s a patient man. But the more they’re together, Mike realizes it isn’t simply desire beating within him. Carly Lennox is the missing piece in his life. Getting her to accept it-and him-may just be the toughest assignment he’s ever taken on.

“Now for a check on the weather. Carl?”

When the monitor light changed colors, Mike turned back to her. “Well done.”

“Thanks for being so patient. I almost lost it for a second there.”

Her beautiful mouth quirked at the corners, and his own went drought-desert dry. He swallowed and ran his suddenly sandpapered tongue across his lips.

“You know, I read parts of your book last night as prep,” he said as she stood, noticing how long and shapely her legs were under her short green skirt. “I was taken with the stories and the details in it.”

“Thanks.” She glanced down at her wristwatch and then offered her hand. The shockwave electrifying through his body at her touch staggered him. A bolt of lightning, hot, fast, and bright surged straight to his core.

What seemed like confusion clouded her eyes as she looked at him. “I-I have to go. I’ve got to be across town by nine. God only knows what the traffic’s like. Thanks again for plugging my book. Tell Sharon I’ll call her soon. Bye. And thanks, again.”

Mike watched her bolt through the studio doors and was only brought out of his musings by the director calling him back to the news desk.

For the rest of the broadcast he was distracted by thoughts of her, resulting in him flubbing some of his lines and intro’s, something he rarely-if ever-did. How compassionate and warm her face had been as she’d told her touching story; the subtle fragrance of roses surrounding her; the deep coppery sheen of her hair as the hot, bright studio lights intensified its color.

By the end of the program he vowed he’d find a way to see her again.

Strife of the Mighty by Julius Bailey

STRIFE OF THE MIGHTY
AUTHOR: Julius Bailey
GENRE: Epic Fantasy

A HUSBAND. A LIQUOR LOVER. A STRANGER. THE DIREST ADVENTURE OF THEIR CENTURY.

For over fifteen hundred years the kingdom of Vrandalin has withstood the might of the one enemy they had need to fear. Now a new threat arises. In the southeastern part of the land, a grim-looking newcomer arrives in the village of Varalel, bringing with him a warning of imminent ruin. Shortly afterward, Varalel is stormed, its folk scattered, and one man is separated from the woman he loves.

Little else matters to Allon Bracken than reuniting with his wife. With nowhere else to turn, he must place his faith in a gruff, mysterious man he knows little of, and an unexpected comrade. But his road is a hard one, and will lead him into dangers and discoveries that will change everything.

It is likely safe to assume that the silver-haired man did not expect events to take such a swift turn when he hasted to Varalel with his warning. But there is no time to curse ill fate. Extenuating circumstances compel him to share Allon’s road—unless it is the other way around—but he quickly finds himself with another goal: the capital must be warned. An army out of legend stamps through the land, goaded by an age-old enchantress with designs of destruction. Time is short. But he must look to himself as well, for a hunted man is rarely at rest, and the terrible creatures that pursue him do not sleep.

And for a former traveling trinket seller deemed village ‘softhead’ by his peers, things are suddenly very horrible indeed. Or are they? It seems that chaos brings folk together. Joined to Allon’s path by an inner impulse, he discovers a companionship he did not expect to find. He will need it.

Enter Vrandalin; a land where ancient powers stir, dark beasts prowl, forgotten lore returns, and those who are thought weak discover their strength.

Brandegan quickened his run. Ahead of him the lights had begun to recede, melting into the night like wraiths. There were no more shouts either. All around silence again crept forward. Just before he could reach them, the last of the fires vanished. Brandegan was just about to dash after them, but something halted him. The heavy forestry round about was still, too still. Brandegan became aware of an intense watchfulness, and as he listened, a shroud of dread descended upon him.

Suddenly he felt, rather than saw, a shadow shift beside him. Next moment, he was hurled forward, heaved from the earth as though he was weightless, and tossed like a wind-blasted reed. Hardly had he struck the ground when a dark weight fell on him, crushing him down. He heard a snarl, and then four enormous claws, sharp as blades, raked his side. He fought back, lashing out with Rithlir, but a great, hirsute paw gripped his arm and, with a massive strength, pinned it to the ground.

Then Brandegan saw the eyes. Hovering just before his face, they shone as red fire, feeding the darkness with their terror and harboring within them the insatiable spirit of the Dread Palace. Even as they gazed down on their prey, the malice behind those eyes was kindled to sudden wrath, for here at last was their scourge, here at last was the thorn long sought.

But just before teeth as deadly as the edge of Rithlir found their mark, there was a dazzling flash. Shadows leapt up and fled, the darkness was pushed back, and in that moment Brandegan’s adversary was revealed. Greater in stature than any beast of the wild stood Daugruil. As other Gragmarr, his forelegs loomed up, broad and strong. His back, arching downward near his hind-legs, was covered in coarse, crimson fur, and his great muzzle was lined with dagger-edged teeth. Now he stumbled backward, thwarted from his intent by the blinding, silver flare.

Brandegan leapt to his feet as soon as the weight was lifted. His side throbbed in agony, and blood had already soaked through his raiment. But he heeded it not. The insatiable spirit of malice that burned in the eyes of this Gragmarr he knew.

✯✯✯✯✯There's a long historical background to the world of this book, full of names I can't pronounce and creatures I've never imagined before. The landscape changes as the characters take their journey. Cultures and characters change from place to place, and magic is everywhere. A fascinating read! The pace is steady, though there were times (during battles, mostly) when I couldn't put this book down without feeling unsatisfied. The highlights of this novel, for me, were the instances where the characters are able to interact without speaking, the parts that made me laugh (thank you Merch!).

My favorite character is Merch. His strength is born of love for his friends, which I admire. Allon is another favorite, mostly because of his appreciation & love for his wife.

PS. I purchased two copies as gifts and Amazon let me download the Kindle version for free because of that. Pretty sweet perk! Thanks, Amazon. =) (I don't know if 2 copies is the minimum for this deal). By Sarah on March 25, 2015 Verified Purchase

✯✯✯✯✯Strife of the Mighty: Book One of the Chronicles of Vrandalin has everything I expect from a traditionally styled epic fantasy. The story features dark beasts chasing the heroes, swords that may just be a bit magical, a journey fraught with danger, a little love, a little tragedy, and, of course, an epic battle to top it all off.

I love the pairing of two regular guys with the mysterious traveler. It’s always fun for me to follow the perspective of the unlikely hero, or heroes in this case. Allon and Merch were great, and Brandegan is the epitome of the timeless wizard or epic warrior, reminding me strongly of favorite characters from other fantasies I adore. Then again, I kept picturing them as hobbits tagging along after a ranger, though I think that was from more of a vibe than any particular feature.

The pacing of this story was great, fast when it needed to be fast, and slower when it needed to be slower. I thought the fights were pretty well choreographed and exciting. Danger seems to fade out, letting the adventurers get a little comfortable, and then there comes some kind of beast or other enemy. But what I liked most about these impromptu battles was how they all actually move the plot along. They all do in some way. Most in a big way.

Playing counterpart to the fights and chases, and like many of the more traditional fantasies, this one features fanciful detours into lore, poetry and song. I read most of them, but I must admit I skipped through one of the songs. It was nice that these little offshoots were in italics, easy to identify. I imagine some could be skimmed through, but I wouldn’t recommend doing so for those related to the history of the world; otherwise, you won’t know who or what’s important later in the book when the myths start getting a little less mythical.

Also like many stories in the genre, it has its fair share of words and phrases that I’m sure I butchered, but most weren’t too baffling. There’s a pronunciation guide at the back for those who like to be sure of such things, but I preferred to just wing it. And on the same note, the language starts off a little flowery and formal, as though trying very hard to proclaim, “I am fantasy.” Luckily, it didn’t seem to stay that way. I’m not certain if that’s because I got used to it or because it laid off a bit when the plot got going.

So, overall, I really liked this story. I’d recommend it for folks who like a good, solid traditional fantasy with plenty of adventure, intriguing characters and a well-thought plot. By Trish (I read too much!) on October 19, 2015

Harvesting Love by Christine Cunningham

“No Beatrice, I don’t love you.”

For ten years those words echoed in the mind of professional organizer Beatrice Sanders. She buried her painful past beneath a life of order, control, and solitude.

William Connors passes the days by losing himself in woodworking and farming in his family owned apple orchard. He’s haunted by the moment he chose a woman who made sense for the farm, but not for himself, just like his father had.

Five years after William’s divorce, he makes a decision he hopes will change his life, and seeks out Beatrice, the only woman he ever loved--and the one he betrayed. William hopes to plant a seed of forgiveness in her heart, but does time really heal all wounds?

“How…how is he?”

Jodi chewed on her lower lip for a moment.

“You know I don’t like going down this road, it never ends well.”

Beatrice rolled her eyes.

“And I like going down the road of having my best friend trying to set me up with every guy with a pulse?”

“Point taken, but remember when you feel the urge to start collecting more useless hobbies after I tell you how he is, I didn’t start it.”

“Jodi, I’m a big girl.”

“He’s fine, and no he hasn’t asked about you, William has moved on and so should you.”

“But he is divorced, right?”

Jodi balled up her napkin and nodded.

“For two years, but I think he’s seeing someone now.”

“Are they serious?”

“Sure, maybe, I don’t know, I teach him martial arts and we don’t discuss his love life.”

Another buzz from Beatrice’s vibrates the table.

“Why can’t your hobby be settling down?”

Swiping the surface of her phone to silence the alarm and putting it in her pocket, Beatrice signaled the waiter for the check.

“Not everyone gets it right the first time. You and Trent are clearly a match, but don’t mistake your luck in finding the right one as expertise in romance.”

Nothing is sweeter than love.

Willa Stowe left her small town for the bright lights of New York to follow in the footsteps of her literary idol, Kurt Remington.

She didn't expect that her great apartment was actually a Craigslist scam or that she'd be broke in a new city.

With nowhere else to go, she buys a jar of jam at the Brooklyn Flea and relays her story to the lady behind the booth who hires her on the spot. Her first job? Deliver jam to the most eligible bachelor in Brooklyn and the owner of the FO winery, Justin Foster.

Justin spent his years since graduating from college, focusing on building his winery and proving to his blue blood parents that he could build something on his own.

He didn't expect the wide-eyed Midwestern girl to walk into his winery, or to fall head over heels for her.

But when a trip to Justin's parent's family vineyard brings some unexpected guests from his past, Willa and Justin have to find out if this urban businessman and aspiring author can find some kind of love.

"Are you trying to tell me I should give you some inspiration?" I stepped closer, not wanting to do anything she didn't want me to, but the more she licked her lips, the more I wanted to taste them.

"What have you got for me?" she whispered, looking up at me with those bright hazel eyes dancing.

I ran my fingers along her jawline, her body shivering as I stepped closer. "I think maybe you should look into writing romance."

Without thinking any further, I leaned in and pressed my lips to hers. She gasped, her mouth opening to mine. She had the sweetest lips and an even more intoxicating taste. Her tongue found mine and my body pulsed as she wrapped her arms around my neck, moving closer to me.

I put my hands on her hips, feeling the curves of her body under my fingertips. I wanted to push her up against the wall and take her right there against all the barrels. When she moaned and bit my lip, I gripped onto the thin fabric of her dress, trying to hold myself back from doing just that.

When the planes crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11, Brock Westhaven didn’t just lose his dad, he lost his future. Now the project manager for Aspen Construction, Brock had two goals—to rebuild the family business, and get his still-grieving mother out of her less than desirable circumstances. His plan was simple until Charlotte Cruise appeared.

Charlotte Cruise lost everything to corporate greed. Despite a deathbed promise to her cancer-stricken mother, Charlie wasn’t a real activist. So when the construction company responsible for her mother’s death showed up with yet another potentially lethal project, Charlie chained herself to the front door to stop their progress. She wasn’t expecting the project manager to be tall, dark and unforgettable.

Two lives pushed together by fate and torn apart by circumstances. Can they beat the odds and give into their desires, or will their stubborn dispositions get in the way of true love?

She had a voice as sweet as maple syrup and a body that sizzled with sin. My curiosity was sparked. “I just moved here from New York City.” I gave a cursory look over the menu. “Some silver-haired lady told me to come here and order the chicken and taters. She said to tell Charlie that she sent me. Is he around?” I peeked past Charlotte into the cutout window of the kitchen, but I didn’t see anyone.

“You’re looking at her.” She leaned forward and into my personal space. “Charlotte … remember? Charlie for short.” She placed a napkin and silverware in front of me.

“You’re hard to forget.” And she was. She was quirky and strange, but I found that a refreshing change to the girls I met in New York. They were brand names and fine dining, whereas Charlie gave me the impression she was the salt of the earth.

“Oh, you won’t forget me.”

Just when Diem thinks the wedding can't get more stressful, she realizes the bartender was none other that the owner of the hotel, Sterling Crew, Lili's brother. Will this be a disaster, or a recipe for love?

Lili gave me an entire thirty minutes of her time. By the time she’d tasted, and rejected every sample of cake I’d brought, my legs were asleep, and I could barely get off the floor.

“This has no flavor.” She threw it back in the box.

“This is delicious, but I can’t have red cake for my wedding. Can you make it with white cake?” It was red velvet cake.

When I suggested it was red velvet, but I could make the frosting very white, and thick liners, she threw the sample across the hallway. I took a deep breath.

It was no wonder her brother didn’t have the hotel wedding staff planning her wedding. He needed to keep them. They’d have quit after the first week of planning. She’d been pleasant for the first ten minutes when we sat down, even asked me how things had been going since high school, so I thought maybe Siena had gotten through to her.

“Was that Siena Remington I saw you with?” Yes, it took me that long to get up the nerve to ask her.

Absentmindedly, she responded, “Uh, huh. I’ll be right back.” She stood and dashed down the hallway.

“You won’t be disappointed.”

Her gaze met his.

Awareness passed between them, strong and undeniable. The connection felt real, almost electric, and pulled him in.

She tilted her head, exposing her neck. All he could think about was leaving a trail of kisses from her collar to her lips.

Moisture filled Ry’s mouth. His pulse accelerated. The temperature in the condo rose twenty degrees. He took a step toward her, wanting to get closer, then stopped.

Uh-oh.

He moved back, went around the breakfast bar, and gathered the ingredients in the kitchen. Her scent—something citrusy—hung in the air. Every nerve ending seemed conscious of Bree, the rise and fall of her chest with each breath, her adjusting the ice pack against her hip.

Yes, she was pretty. Hot, actually.

But her appearance shouldn’t matter.

He was used to being around gorgeous models—holding them, touching them, kissing them. All for the camera.

But this sudden connection with Bree?

The low ache might be familiar, but the longing in his chest wasn’t.

Six years of traveling for her television series has left host Kiley Nelson longing for a place to call her own. Spending a weekend at her girlfriend’s beach house is the perfect reprieve, especially when she purchases property to finally settle down. But her peaceful escape is shaken when she smashes into a car containing the sinfully sexy and infuriated passenger, Jeff Hammond, who immediately melts her heart.

Jeff, staying at his friend’s Montauk home to relax after a trying week of building a home for a spoiled diva, doesn’t count on sharing his weekend with the flaky, yet incredibly sexy, Kiley. He agrees to build her house, despite the tug on his heart as Kiley turns him on in every delicious way.

Passionate weekends and shared dreams begin to shape the house they start to build together. As their relationship deepens, so do the wounds from past hurts, rousing ghosts from Jeff’s traumatic past. When a summer storm rolls in at the nearly complete house, they’re forced to deal with the past before it shakes and cracks the very foundation they’ve built.

As they swam out again to wait for the next one, they turned toward one another. Jeff pulled her to him, and she wrapped her legs around his waist without thinking that it was a pretty intimate position to be in with a man she’d only met a few hours earlier.

His strong arms encircled her back, and he drew her closer until their lips met. Kiley thought of nothing else but the taste of salt on his mouth. They both opened their lips at the same time, and tongues entwined as the water swirled around them. Only when the next wave hit and pulled them both under did they pull apart.

“I didn’t expect that,” she sputtered when she surfaced. “That was some kiss.”

Jeff grinned. “Didn’t you like it?”

“I loved it, but I don’t even know you. Don’t you think it’s kind of sudden?”

“You mean, you need to find out if I’m a mass murderer or something?”

She splashed water on him and then dove under, swimming closer to shore. When she came up for air, he was right next to her.

Author: Michele Shriver

Official genre of book: Contemporary romance (sports)

As the starting goaltender for the San Antonio Generals, Becker Lawson tries to fly under the radar, and since most hockey fans are more interested in the players that score, he’s generally allowed that luxury—at least until the Generals’ offseason hockey camps put Beck front and center.

After a difficult divorce, newly single Kendall Myers has every intention of remaining that way—no matter how sexy her son’s new hockey coach might be.

When Beck crosses paths with Kendall, the chemistry is immediately evident, even if she doesn’t want to see it. Can Beck break down her walls and prove that when it comes to love, even goalies can score?

The temperature outside topped the century mark, typical of Texas in June, but the inside of the Alamo Ice Rink was a cool, temperature-controlled fifty-seven degrees. Becker Lawson watched the people filing into the rink and wondered if they were all truly interested in the opening day of the Young Generals hockey camp, or if some of them merely wanted to find a way to beat the San Antonio heat by spending the day in a cool environment. Either way, it appeared that the camp would be well-attended.

There were forty children signed up for the camp, which would allow them to hone their hockey skills with a handful of San Antonio Generals players serving as their coaches. The enrollment numbers for this inaugural camp exceeded everyone’s expectation. Hopefully a few would be budding goaltenders who could benefit from Becker’s tutelage. He knew one of the kids already, a young boy named Bryson Crawford, who was the son of the host family that Becker’s Russian teammate, Nikolai Brantov, had stayed with this season. Bryson had attended a few team practices, so Beck was already familiar with his passion for the sport, and particularly the goalie position.

Beck waited as Meryl Johnson, the director of the camp and the daughter of the Generals’ owner, introduced the coaches and gave them each a chance to tell the kids a little about themselves and the position they played. Finally, after Nik, team captain and star center, Colton Tremblay, right wingers Trevor Collison and Ryder Carrigan, and defenseman Noah Mann had spoken, it was Beck’s turn. Yeah, typical to save the goalie until the very end. It wasn’t the position of glory and glamour. After all, goalies didn’t score, or at least not very often, and too many times they were the goat, shouldering the blame for giving up the goal that might cost their team the game.

Becker first started playing goalie at the age of ten, and never looked back. He couldn’t imagine playing any other position, and he looked forward to teaching his skills to these boys and girls. “Hi there,” he said, taking the microphone from Meryl after she’d introduced him. “I’m Becker Lawson, and I’m the starting goaltender for the Generals. To me, goalie is the most important position on a hockey team. It combines physical skills, mental skills, and emotional skills.” He went on to explain about the importance of each before asking, “How many of you here have played goalie before, or think you might be interested in playing goalie?”

Six hands went up, including Bryson, as expected, and one girl, which pleased Beck. The NWHL had opened up professional hockey to women, and he wanted the sport, and the position, to be inclusive to everyone. “Great. Anyone else?”

There was a boy in the front that caught Beck’s eye. He raised his hand a little ways, then pulled it down, as if he couldn’t make up his mind.

Beck moved closer to him. “What’s your name?”

“Tristan,” the boy said. “Tristan Myers.”

“Hi, Tristan. You seem a little uncertain, like maybe you’re not sure who want to be a goalie. Do you have any questions for me, maybe help you decide?”

“Oh, no. My mind’s made up,” Tristan said. “I already know I want to play goalie. It’s just my mom…” His voice trailed off as he looked down at the ice.

“Your mom doesn’t want you to?” Beck asked.

“Yeah. She says it’s too dangerous for me.”

A common concern, but not an accurate one. “Is your mom here? Maybe I can talk with her for a minute, change her mind.”

“Could you?” Tristan smiled, revealing a missing front tooth. “That’d be great.” He turned around and pointed. “That’s her over there. First row. Blue sweater.”

Beck’s eyes followed Tristan’s finger to a stunning woman with auburn hair that cascaded to her shoulders in soft waves. She wore jeans, the blue sweater Tristan mentioned, and a black leather jacket. She was, quite simply, one of the most beautiful women Beck had ever seen. She also quite likely married, and thus completely off limits. He could still talk a little hockey with her, though, just nothing else. “Great. Let me go see what I can do, buddy.”

Kendall was glad she’d worn a coat. It might be hotter than Hades outside, but it was plenty chilly inside the rink. Her close friend and fellow hockey mom hadn’t been as smart, and now Lori rubbed her arms as she complained about the cold temperature.

“Hopefully watching all these hot guys in action will warm me up quickly,” she declared.

Kendall raised an eyebrow. “Excuse me? Aren’t you married?”

“Yes,” Lori said. “Married, not dead. I’m still allowed to appreciate a good-looking man, and this hockey team is full of them. Seriously, they ought to make a calendar. I don’t know why they haven’t.”

“Whatever.” Kendall did her best to sound as if she hadn’t even noticed. The last thing she wanted was her friend to get any ideas that one of the players might be a good match for Kendall.

“Yeah, ‘whatever,’ yourself,” Lori chided. “It’s time for you to get back in the game.”

“Can we quit with the sports references, please? Oh, and the divorce has only been final for three weeks.” Kendall wanted a chance to enjoy being single, which sounded good in theory. The reality was all she’d done so far was feel sorry for herself. Even the day the decree was approved by the judge, when Lori showed up at the house with several bottles of high-priced sparkling wine in an attempt to celebrate Kendall’s newfound singlehood, she’d ended up a blubbering mess.

“Yes, but the marriage was over long before that,” her friend said, before softening her tone. “Look, Kendall, I know it stings. Carter was an ass. Actually, Carter is still an ass. But it doesn’t mean all men are. There are plenty of good ones in the world.”

Kendall was about to offer another ‘whatever,’ which had become her new favorite word, when Lori said, “Oh my. Hello. Hottie alert. And he’s coming this way.”

Sure enough, Kendall turned her head and spotted one of the Generals players, whom she recognized as the starting goalie, heading toward them. Lori wasn’t exaggerating. He was definitely hot, with dark hair and piercing brown eyes.
