Book Chat #46 – Carysa Locke, Diana Logan, and Veronica Roth

It’s time for another much anticipated Book Chat! Unfortunately, I haven’t been reading much lately what with the broken leg. I would’ve thought that all this sitting around would lead to more reading, but with pain involved, it’s been hard to concentrate on reading. Still, I have some books to share with you today!
COMMANDER’S PRICE by Diana Logan
This one I actually read last year! And I’ve been patiently, maybe not so patiently, waiting for it to be released so I could gush over it. I really enjoyed COMMANDER’S PRICE. It was snarky and fun. The heroine was delightful, and the hero was strong, interesting, and sympathetic. Plus, there’s a great mystery here as to what happened to these aliens and how they’re going to solve their problems of being stranded. I don’t usually go for the whole “abducted by aliens and forced into coupling” trope, so I was glad that this one subverted the trope with a twist. Excellently done, Ms. Logan! I’m now awaiting Book 2!
PIRATE FESTIVAL by Carysa Locke
I’m always happy to return to this universe created by Carysa Locke. I mean, what’s not to love about Telepathic Space Pirates! This glimpse into Nayla’s world was really insightful, and I especially loved seeing the planet and environment that raises the Killer telepaths. It was a bit creepy at times! This is a planet full of Killers, after all. But their society is an honorable one, and Nayla’s presence among them is softening and raises pertinent questions about how they will evolve. A really great side story to this series. I can’t wait for the next full novel!
THE FATES DIVIDE by Veronica Roth
My faith in Veronica Roth is restored! I really loved the way she brought all of the characters in these books around to their rightful end. Yes, some characters did die, but thankfully, not the ones I had grown attached to. I did love that Akos and Cyra made their own decisions, and even though they took different paths to their ending, they still ended up needing and helping each other. The fates may have divided, but they were brought together by the end! I enjoyed this rich and fascinating world. It was clever and interesting from beginning to end.
And that’s it for this Book Chat! I hope to have more for you soon. I did read another book in the midst of these, but it’s not published or on pre-order yet. We’ll save it for next time!

Featuring THE DEAD GIRL’S STILETTOS By Quinn Avery

I know y’all are always looking for some new mysteries to read, so when my friend Quinn told me she was writing this series, I knew I had to have her here to talk about the first book in the series!
I asked Quinn, “What inspired THE DEAD GIRL’S STILETTOS?”
Quinn replied…
I’ve adored Veronica Mars since the first episode was released, and wanted to create a similar female sleuth who was both independent and witty. Plus my daughter is a college freshman studying criminal psychology, so I was inspired to create a character that she could assimilate with (while having a riot doing it, because I stole names from all her new friends).
You may not know this about me but I LOVE Veronica Mars. It’s one of my favorite shows!
Nearly a decade after moving across the country, journalist Bexley Squires returns home when one of Hollywood’s brightest stars makes her an offer she can’t refuse. After all, it’ll take more than the chump change in her bank account to find her missing sister.
But the elite seaside community of Papaya Springs has become more corrupt than she imagined, and she soon stumbles into a web of twisted games played by the rich and famous. With time running out, can she save her sister before it’s game over?

It’s Cover Reveal Day! Introducing The New Nogiku Series Covers!

2019 is officially the Year of Change around here. Not only did the Miso Cozy Mysteries get a makeover but now the Nogiku Series as well! Once again, if you are seeing the old covers in the header or the sidebar or in this post, please clear your cache. I always replace the old images on my server to give a consistent experience.
I was really lucky to get all of these in the first part of the year. I had my designer booked for June, and she fit me in early when other people canceled on her. We were just finishing up the last of them when I broke my leg! Talk about timing!
2019 felt like the year to make a new start with these books. When I got these covers redesigned a few years ago, I had wanted people on the covers but good stock images of Asians/Japanese were hard to come by. What a difference a few years makes! Najla Qamber did such a great job on these designs. She combined images and made my characters come to life. I’m so darned grateful.
And I’m so happy to have these now as I feel they really fit the tone of the series. They mirror the designs of other sci-fi romance books on the market and give a taste of what’s in each book. Together as a set, they represent the themes I present in the books. I’m really happy with them! And they will usher in new ads and new ventures into getting these books into the hands of readers who will love them.
Take a look!
Aren’t they gorgeous? I’m so happy!
A note about the paperbacks
Like the previous Miso Cozy books, it’s going to take me another week or two to get the paperbacks for these books all straightened up. I need to do the whole kitten-caboodle on this. New covers, new ISBNs, new interior files. It’s a real pain in the butt, and honestly, I don’t sell many copies of this series in paperback so I’m not motivated to get to it right away. Soon, though. Before the end of the month.
Have you read this series yet?
Guess what? REMOVED is free and a great way to get started in this world!
Can she piece together the truth before Earth’s last city tears itself apart?
It’s easy for Sanaa to ignore the first signs of trouble. After all, she’s living her dream with a job and life she loves. But when she’s reassigned as a data analyst for a mysterious, well-connected man, she starts to piece together the alarming reality. Corrupt clans vie for control of the city, desperate for a ticket off the dying planet.
As war looms between the clans, Sanaa’s new boss sends her to train with Jiro, an expert swordsman. Forbidden to share the dangerous secrets she’s learned with her family, she confides in Jiro, bringing them closer with every word, strike, and parry. Together, they realize that Sanaa’s boss is keeping secrets of his own.
When the truth comes to light, the war and Sanaa’s world could be changed forever. To save her family and forge a new peace for her city, Sanaa has no choice but to risk her life for the human race.
Removed is the first installment in the Nogiku Series, a saga of post-apocalyptic sci-fi romance novels set in future Japan. If you like tenacious heroines, sizzling chemistry, and unique post-apoc settings, then you’ll love S. J. Pajonas’ dystopian adventure.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Happy 1000th Blog Post!

It’s a big day around here! This is the 1000th blog post I’ve written for this site! I can hardly believe I’ve been so dedicated to this site over the past 8 years. I think this is the longest I’ve ever kept one website up and running, though I’ve been a professional web developer since 1998.
I thought it might be nice to look at some of my stats from the blog to see how things have progressed over the last few years. Then I’ll have a giveaway!
Blog Stats
I set my Google Analytics to show me stats from January 2012 to April 2019. I started this blog in August 2011, so this date range seemed to be the best to get some good stats.
There have been a lot of unique visitors to my website! Over 172,000 people! Of course, I don’t have that many readers, but it’s interesting to think that that many people have seen my name and possibly my work.
People from all over the world and the US also visit my site. My favorite stat here is that Asia and the Philippines appear to be my biggest visitors.
This is my favorite social media stat. You can definitely tell when I started to work hard at Pinterest! And I’m glad my work there is bringing more people to my website.
This statistic goes to show that mobile is growing and worth making sure your website is mobile friendly. And remember that these stats are over a whole 7 years. 7 years ago, I was using my phone but not as much as I do now. Now, it’s even more important to optimize your website for phones and tablets.
And finally the devices most used to access my site. Apple devices win out. Not surprised.

Sunday Update – April 7, 2019

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
A short Sunday Update this week since I’m kinda depressed and still healing.
This is the week I got my cast off! Which is both a good thing and a shocking thing. I saw the x-rays of my left leg, and I’m still in shock. I have a 14″ metal rod in my leg from my knee to my ankle. I have two screws holding it up by my knee and three down holding it by my ankle. On my calf side, I have a 4″ long metal plate with six screws holding the fibula bone together. That required a long incision and 24 staples. I had over 20 sutures as well. They all came out on Thursday. It was not a pleasant experience. I cried.
Basically, I see why the damned surgery took 5 hours. I really messed up my left leg, y’all. I can’t even look at it now without feeling faint. And my right foot is still healing and I have to wear this huge, stupid boot on it to walk for another FOUR WEEKS. Yes, this also means I can’t drive for another month.
But I can bear weight on both legs and do physical therapy. I’m pleased that I can still get around and that I’m getting a little stronger each day. I am still in pain, unfortunately, and probably will be for some time. But at least now, I can alternate Tylenol and Advil. I was denied Advil until the cast came off. So the pain management is easier. My left foot though is the major pain culprit right now. If things are bad, which they were last night, I can take a small dose of oxycodone to get through. I hate the narcotics, but I need sleep to heal.
We also canceled our vacation, which I desperately needed before this accident happened. And my mom left to return home to South Carolina. I miss her already.
Other than that, I don’t remember much of what I did this past week. Mostly TV watching with my mom and working on optimizing the new covers for the Nogiku Series and redoing the ebook files for them all. I hope to debut them this week!
OH! I showered Saturday morning for the first time in over two weeks! It was heavenly, and it made me feel like a human being.
What else happened this week?
The cast is off the left leg. The boot remains on the right so I don’t mess up the foot that they fixed. I’ve got these lovely compression stockings on. They hide the real damage underneath.
I made it outside for some fresh air with my mom and the dog, Cookie.
I made it into the kitchen this week and made my own peanut butter sandwich with some carrots. It wasn’t much but it was the first food I made for myself in two weeks.
And today, the weather outside was beautiful so I ate lunch on the deck with my husband.
I’m hoping to write this week. Maybe if I can get some words down, it’ll kick me out of this depression. We shall see. My husband is going to work from home all week, then next week we have our Spring Break and he’ll be home. Then we need to figure out the 10 days until I go see the doctor again.
Have a great week everyone!

Featuring THE WOMAN IN THE WHITE KIMONO By Ana Johns

I am REALLY excited to feature this book today on the blog. With its roots in actual Japanese history, THE WOMAN IN THE WHITE KIMONO has a deep, rich premise that I think will appeal to my readers who love the Japanese elements of my books. You’ll want to check this one out for sure!
I asked Ana, “Why did you write THE WOMAN IN THE WHITE KIMONO?”
Ana replied…
Although THE WOMAN IN THE WHITE KIMONO is a work of fiction, it is crafted from real events and stories, including my own—or rather, my father’s. The beginning was inspired by his story of the beautiful Japanese girl he loved while enlisted in the US Navy, and how her family had invited him to a traditional tea. Upon meeting him, an American sailor, he was refused. From there, research (and my imagination) took over.
Over ten thousand babies were born to American servicemen and Japanese women before, during and after the Occupation. Ten thousand. Out of those, just over seven hundred children were surrendered to the Elizabeth Saunders Home—an orphanage in Oiso, Japan, created in 1948 by Miki Sawada, the Mitsubishi heiress, specifically for abandoned mixed-race children.
But how and why did this happen?
By answering those questions, I was able to create a probable narrative, but it was in finding the real-life survivors—the children of the Elizabeth Sanders Home—and in learning their stories that The Woman in the White Kimono took on a story of its own.
Although I set this novel aside several times, it called me back again and again. With knowledge comes responsibility, and since I knew—ten thousand babies—I bore a responsibility to share their story. It is my sincerest hope that The Woman in the White Kimono shines a bright light in multiple directions without blame or forced resolution.
Wow, right? This book sounds amazing! I’m going to get a copy and read it right away as soon as it comes out. Thank you, Ana, for dropping by today and telling us about the historical roots of this novel!
Oceans and decades apart, two women are inextricably bound by the secrets between them.
Japan, 1957. Seventeen-year-old Naoko Nakamura’s prearranged marriage would secure her family’s status in their traditional Japanese community, but Naoko has fallen for an American sailor, a gaijin. When she’s forced to make unimaginable choices, the consequences will ripple across generations.
America, present day. Tori Kovac, caring for her dying father, finds a letter containing a shocking revelation—one that calls into question everything she understood about him, her family and herself. It would take a trip around the world to unravel her father’s past and an act of faith to face it.
In breathtaking prose and inspired by true stories from a devastating and little-known era in Japanese and American history, The Woman in the White Kimono illuminates a searing portrait of one woman torn between her culture and her heart, and another woman on a journey to discover the true meaning of family.

April 2019 Goals

Oh, March. You were looking to be an awesome month… and then? Then you gave me a fractured foot and a broken leg. March, you’re fired.
What Happened With March’s Goals?
Continue working on the SFR Station website. I did work on this a little bit, and I still have a long way to go on it. But I’m making progress on the content and I hope to be done soon!
Start Bookbub Ads. Nope. Again this didn’t happen.
Copy edit and publish THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE FINDS HER CALLING. DONE. Thank god, I got the most important task done before I broke my leg.
Finish the paperbacks for the whole Miso Cozy Mysteries series. DONE. Also glad that this task is done because it took a long time and was a bit stressful.
Make teasers for THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE FINDS HER CALLING and edit all the old teasers for the whole Miso Cozy series. I did do the teasers for THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE FINDS HER CALLING but I didn’t edit the old teasers. I’m going to table that task to the summer.
Start writing Flyght 3. Here’s where I get a little depressed. The day I broke my leg was the day I was going to start writing this book. I was SO EXCITED. I had the first act all plotted and was ready to get to it. I obviously haven’t touched this book since the accident. I have been managing my pain, which makes me distracted and very uncreative. I can barely concentrate to do anything, not even read a book. I’m hoping in another week, that will change.
Plan and execute a Harry Potter birthday party for my oldest. Also, didn’t happen due to the accident. Planning happened and then I ended up in the hospital. We are planning to postpone this to the end of April.
It’s mammogram time. I did get my mammogram and everything was okay there!
Get a new doctor. I kinda wish I had done this before my accident. All the doctors at the hospital asked who my primary care physician was and I told them I didn’t have one because I fired my last doctor. They were understanding, but still. Sigh.
Intermittent fasting, knitting, walking/stairs, stretching, pottery, and reading. So basically, I can’t do any of this anymore. I can’t intermittent fast because the meds make me nauseous if I take them on an empty stomach. I’m managing too much pain to knit. Walking and stairs are a no-go. There is some stretching happening with physical therapy. Pottery class ended and the next one doesn’t start until April 11, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to go. I’m doing some reading but not a lot.
A Look Back At March
Business Goals For April
Continue working on the SFR Station website. Every month until this is done.
Reveal the new covers for the Nogiku Series. This will be a lot of work, just like the Miso Cozy Mysteries were. I need to save out all the new images, upload them to the website, attach them to all the ebooks, redo all the ebooks, reupload them, and redo all the paperbacks. I hope to accomplish all the little steps during moments when I’m not feeling a lot of pain.
Start Bookbub Ads. Once the Nogiku Series new covers are up, I’ll make a few Bookbub ads and get them running. I want a small drip campaign to run constantly to bring me new readers.
Start Facebook Ads. Same as with the Bookbub Ads, I will be running an ad to bring in new readers to the series.
Start writing Flyght 3. I’m hoping I can start on this in mid-April at the latest. Right now, I’m not feeling it but I think if I open my Evernote file and look at what I had planned before the accident, I might start the wheels turning.
Personal Goals For April
Plan and execute a Harry Potter birthday party for my oldest. Hoping to get this up and running by the end of the month.
Work on healing this broken leg and fractured foot and start physical therapy. As soon as I’m cleared to drive, I hope to get started on physical therapy. My chiropractor also has a physical therapist on staff, so I hope I can start with her if she has an opening. If not, I’ll get a referral.
Put all other personal goals on hold. I can’t wait to get back to intermittent fasting and knitting and walking and all the things that make me happy. But healing this leg is priority number one because I can’t do any of that without the healed leg. So I will be back to those goals, hopefully by summer.
Have a great April!

Teaser Tuesday – Mei, The Daydreamer

It’s Teaser Tuesday for THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE FINDS HER CALLING!
One thing we’ve known about Mei from the beginning is that she’s a consummate daydreamer. In her head, she goes places, does things, and becomes a different person. It’s what gets her in trouble, but it’s also what makes her special. Her daydreams are often strikingly accurate and almost prescient. In this book, I decided to really put her daydreaming ways to the test and have her apply her skills to the case at hand. This is what most great detectives do, anyway. They use their knowledge of human habits, cravings, and motivations to determine what a killer would’ve done. Stepping up Mei’s skills for this book is the next level in getting her find her calling.
I love this moment in the book when Kumi catches Mei drifting off. They all think it’s charming. :)

Sunday Update – March 24, 2019

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
I wasn’t going to post this, but I might as well. This is the week I broke my left leg and fractured my right foot, and I ended up in an ambulance and the hospital for the first time ever in my life besides birthing children. I also had surgery for the first time ever. I’m glad I’m alive.
Monday was all fine and great. I have no recollection of what happened that day.
Tuesday, in a freak accident, I slipped on some stone slate at the bottom of our deck stairs, broke both bones in my left leg and fractured my right foot. I had to call 911, my kids witnessed it all, and everything. I set my own leg because I saw that it wasn’t where it wasn’t supposed to be and “fixed it.” Yes, I did. Even the cops who showed up were impressed. After that, the whole day is a blur of details that I don’t want to reiterate right now. I was in the Emergency Room all day awaiting surgery, and when surgery was scheduled for the next morning, I was moved to a private room with lots of morphine to get me through.
Wednesday was surgery day. The whole day was taken up by it. This was also a traumatic day for me, as I thought I was dying more than once. Jesus. I’m still tearing up typing this.
Thursday was recovery day and my first session of physical therapy. Yes, if the surgeon decides you can bear weight on your legs, you get up and moving right away to prevent blood clots and muscle atrophy. I am weight bearing on both my legs, miracle of miracles. I am half cyborg now, though, so watch out! There’s lots of metal rods, screws, and maybe a plate in there. I am unclear on the details. I was able to take steps on this day, but I was so tired from anesthesia the day before I didn’t do much.
Friday was much better. I got some sleep despite the pain and was able to do PT in the training facility at the hospital which was REALLY nice, by the way. I picked the right hospital when I was totally panicked and freaked out in the ambulance. Then, miracle of miracles, they allowed me to go home. And a good thing, too, because it was my daughter’s 12th birthday. Ugh, yes. This all happened right along with her birthday. I have to make it up to her somehow.
Saturday and Sunday has been recuperation at home. My mother is here. She got the call from my husband and immediately packed up, got in the car with her dog, and started driving up from South Carolina. She made it here in time for my surgery. I have a special recliner that can bring me up to an almost standing position so I can use the walker. I will be sleeping in it tonight as sleeping in bed is too painful right now. I’m not sleeping much at all because of the uncomfortableness of having two casts on. I need to benadryl myself tonight or I will just spend all day tomorrow crying.
I wish this were a more uplifting post! This is something that’s never happened to me before. It was a freak accident that I somehow feel responsible for. I should’ve paid more attention to the slipperiness of the ground. Shouldn’t have been wearing the shoes I was wearing. Etc. Etc. It’s wrong to blame myself, but deep down, I do. But now I have to sleep and recover because I already miss walking in the park, and this pain and no sleep has been bad for my creative mind. I don’t want to write at all. I just want to stare at my phone or the TV. That’s probably what I should do, but I want to write, but I can’t. Sigh.
Here are a few pictures I’m willing to share. I will spare you the one of my broken leg before it was splinted. Even I can’t look at it! But my husband took the photo in the emergency room, and now it’s saved for ever and ever. Amen.
These were my feet in the ER. The left one was splinted by this point, and the doctors were just figuring out that there MIGHT be something wrong with my right foot too. Do you know how many x-rays I had this day? Like too many. Plus, a CAT Scan. I should be glowing at this point.
The only thing I didn’t like about the hospital was the food quality, but what can you do? I’m not there to dine.
Here are my legs post surgery. You can see how swollen my toes and foot are on the left in the photo. Hard cast on the left, walking boot thing on the right. I’m expected to use the walking boot every day and sleep in it too. Both are very hot and uncomfortable.
They gave me this thing post surgery and told me to use it ten times per hour. You don’t breathe into it. You inhale the air out of it. Yeah. I kept forgetting to do it, and I started feeling like crap the very next day. So I set a timer on my phone to remind me every five minutes to do the stupid thing, and I started feeling much better. Go figure. If you’re ever in the hospital and they tell you to do this, DO IT.
Mega bedhead. I didn’t wash my hair for five days. It was so gross. And even after the washing we did yesterday, it’s still not awesome. Maybe when I’m allowed to shower, it’ll look great again.
And back home on the couch. This was before my awesome husband went and got me the recliner. I’m happy to be home, even if I’m still in pain.
And finally, something pretty. I did get two bunches of beautiful flowers while I was in the hospital and they really brightened my spirits.
I’m on 1000mg of Tylenol every six hours until the pain is not too bad and then I can step it back to 700ish and then back to 500ish until I can go off. I hate the narcotics they gave me so I’m only going to use them IF I HAVE TO.
Coming up this week!! A teaser for THE DAYDREAMER DETECTIVE FINDS HER CALLING on Tuesday and the book publishes on Friday. Let me just say that Amazon had better not give me any problems with this book. I keep hearing from other authors that Amazon has been sending out the wrong files. But I uploaded and DOUBLE CHECKED that they have the right file over a week ago. Fingers crossed it goes without a hitch because I have no calm for any problems with them!
Y’all have an awesome week!
