Book Chat #58 – Vivien Jackson #summerofSFR
Continuing on with the Summer of SFR, I have a recently finished book to share with you! I had hoped to have more than one book for this Book Chat, but unfortunately, I stopped reading a book at 65% the other day. Regardless, this one was worth sharing right away!
WANTED AND WIRED by Vivien Jackson (Books2Read)
I loved the post-apocalyptic setting in both the western states, in orbit, and Texas. Such an interesting world Jackson has built here. I really want to know how it all works and what people do to get by. Mari and Heron’s relationship was engrossing, too. They seemed to have a give and take, a push and pull, and the tension kept the story moving at all times. There was a lot here to digest, both for the world-building and the characters, but it never felt overwhelming.
The sexy scenes were blistering hot but never went too far. There’s nothing that bothers me more than sci-fi romance that skips all the heat of flirtation and goes right for the sex and/or there’s sex every other chapter. I’m in it for both the world and the relationships, and WANTED AND WIRED had both. There was a fantastic twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. Loved it!
I bought the second book in the series right away, and I plan to read it once my Summer of SFR is over (I’m only reading first-in-series books this summer).

Onward with the Summer of SFR, I have Jessica Grayson here today to tell us about her book, LOST IN THE DEEP END!
Tell us a little about yourself, Jessica…
“I love to write stories about strong female heroines and the aliens that cannot help but fall in love with them. I live with my husband, cat and dog in the San Antonio, TX area. In addition to reading and writing scifi romance, I love swimming, chai and dark chocolate. I first fell in love with the idea of SFR when I discovered the TV series Firefly. I was so disappointed to have found such a great series and it only had 1 season. I loved Zoey and Wash together and I really shipped Mal and Inara in that series.”
I’m with you on FIREFLY! One of my favorites!
I asked Jessica, “What inspired you to write the V’loryn Series?”
Jessica replied…
“This is a Vampire Alien SFR in my V’loryn Series. I wrote this book because I love Vampire Romance and SFR and decided to combine the two subgenres into one. My favorite thing about this series is that we really get to see the evolution of these two main characters over three books and explore their relationship and how they face challenges together and still choose each other no matter what gets thrown at them throughout the series. What inspired me to write this was grief. I had lost my parents and oldest sister unexpectedly. I’ve always loved to write and I found that writing about these characters was a way to channel my grief into something creative and beautiful. So, writing is my grief therapy and I feel like it pulled me out of my deep depression after losing my family and it is something I love and plan on doing for the rest of my life. “
Big hugs to you, Jessica. Losing family and friends is so hard. I give you enormous props for writing through your grief.

Back to the Summer of SFR, I have Linda Mooney here today to tell us about her book, JEXX!
Tell us a little about yourself, Linda…
Linda loves to write sweet and sensuous romance with a fantasy, paranormal, or science fiction flair. As the author of over 100 books, her technique is often described as being as visual as a motion picture or graphic novel.
She’s a wife, mother, grandmother, and retired Kindergarten and music teacher who lives in a small south Texas town near the Gulf coast, where she delves into other worlds filled with daring exploits, adventure, and intense love.
She’s had numerous best sellers, including 10 consecutive #1s. Also included in her achievements, she’s been named Author of the Year, and her book Lord of Thunder is an Epic Ebook ‘Eppie’ Award Winner for Best Erotic Sci-Fi Romance.
Linda also writes naughty humorous romances under the name of Carolyn Gregg, horror under the pseudonym of Gail Smith, and elementary teacher workbooks as L. G. Mooney.

I asked Linda, “What inspired you to write JEXX?”
Linda replied…
“I enjoy other world building, and I wanted to feature a kick-ass heroine who’s in charge of a military unit. But I also wanted to elaborate on the ‘body-swapping’ trope by having the hero and heroine able to share the same body in order to fight the enemy.”
Whoa. That’s a really cool idea! I don’t think I’ve read a body-swapping trope in a while, but I remember that from the Japanese anime, YOUR NAME. Fun!

Sunday Update – July 12, 2020
The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.
It’s my youngest daughter’s 10th birthday today, so I’m going to keep this short. Anyway, it’s not there’s a ton going on here to talk about!
We’re still in mostly stay-at-home stage here. Still being vigilant. Still not doing much outside the home. Gotta stay strong here so that we keep the COVID away! The rest of the US is not doing so well with this, so I’m glad we’ve kept our numbers low in my state.
This week, our contractors finished the roughing for the bathroom — plumbing, electrical, framing, and insulation all done. We passed all the inspections but for framing/insulation but that inspector is coming on Monday to finish it up. Then we can move forward with the fun stuff! I really hate getting up in the middle of the night to pee and travel across the house to use the only working bathroom. I can’t wait to have our bathroom back in order.
In business stuff, I did a lot of work on installing a mailing list application, only to have to delete it because my host doesn’t allow them. Then my husband and I moved it over to an Amazon EC2 instance instead. Now it’s up and running and I plan to work on it bit by bit over the next week.
I’m still editing CRASH LAND ON KURAI and I got the almost final new cover for that! Moving forward with all of that! It’s going well.

Bex replied…
“What would you do to get back to your child? Would you go up against an alien commander? That question prompted me as I wrote Thanemonger, my debut novel. I wanted to write about a character who was abducted from Earth and was absolutely determined to make it back home. But, I also adore the lighter side of romance, so I wrote a tenacious heroine who’s giving it her all against massive aliens who are determined to keep her. What can you expect from Thanemonger? I guarantee a story filled with steamy, yet tender romance plus plenty of humor and action. Get prepared to fall in love with the men, … er aliens, from House Borac.”
The lighter side of romance is my favorite! I love some good humor and fun.
If she wanted to survive her alien abduction, then she needed to kick some alien butt.

Taking a break from the Summer of SFR (only a little because this one marries both sci-fi and paranormal romance), I have Dana Lyons here today to tell us about the last book in her Dreya Love series!

“HIS FROST MAIDEN is book one in my Space Lords series, and a spin off of the Dragon Lords and Lords of the Var series. They’re all part of the Qurilixen World, a collection of sci fi and paranormal romance books that I’ve been writing in since 2004.
I honestly thought I would only write historical romances. It’s how I started, and as a historian, it’s what I loved to do. After my first book, a Regency ghost story romance, published (back in 2004), the editors contacted me needing authors to fill out their Sci Fi Romance list. I agreed with the idea I’d go back to historical ‘my true passion.’ I laugh at younger me now. Historicals are no longer my passion. Those first Sci Fi books, Dragon Lords, a futuristic dragonshifter series, grew into the Quirlixen World collection with 37+ books within 7 series installments and growing. Space Lords is part of the collection.”

“I live in Illinois with my husband, two sons, and three crazy cats. I love knitting, playing video games, and watching Esports. My passions include the arts, green tea and mints — all while writing and teaching marching band drill in the fall.

“I spent a lot of time looking for a Star Trek/Star Wars/Babylon-5-isk space opera series following a FMC on her journey of finding love… in space… with aliens.
When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I wrote it instead.
