Vincent Morrone’s Top Ten Villains of All Time
Welcome readers to the VISION OF SHADOWS blog tour! Vincent Morrone is a fellow New Adult author and an avid member of the New Adult writing community that I belong to. We have often shared some laughs and talked about what has inspired VISION OF SHADOWS and its dark subject matters. He’s a fun and fantastic guy so I asked him to provide his top ten list of villains. I love what he had to say!
10. Diana – From V – She was smoking hot and cold blooded. Literally. Here was a woman that could have you for dinner. Or lunch or even breakfast.
9. General Zod – The Superman movies – You know you’ve got a great bad guy from the original when they chose to bring him back for the reboot. I loved Man of Steel, but my heart belongs to the Christopher Reed movie and Terence Stamp.
8. The Joker – Batman – He’s the ultimate bat-bad guy. He was in the campy TV show, played by Cesar Romero. He was brought to life for the big screen by the legendary Jack Nicholson and then again by the later Heath Ledger. And did you know that the character was voiced by Mark Hamill for the animated series? That’s right, Luke Skywalker became the Joker. (Talk about going to the dark side!) Speaking of…
7. Darth Vader from Star Wars – I can still remember as a kid, seeing the formidable menace stalking across the screen, choking people with the force. Okay, I admit I thought it was kind of lame how a guy who hunted down and murdered nearly all Jedi, including the kids at Jedi academy, blew up an entire planet without blinking an eye (At least we assume he didn’t blink an eye behind that helmet.) and yet he goes and saves one person, his own son, and the great mystical force forgives him and he gets to hang out in the afterlife with one of his victims. Obi-Wan. But still, it’s Darth Vader!
6. Khan! (Khan! Khan! Khan!) From Star Trek – Mr. Roarke gone bad. Loved him in the original space seed. Adored him in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn. And he even worked in the reboot!
5. Lex Luthor – Superman – How many Luthors have there been? Too many that I don’t feel like tracking ‘em all down. And so many of them were fabulous. But I’ve got to single out Michael Rosenbaum from Smallville.
4. Hannibal Lector – The TV show was okay, but let’s be real here: it was Anthony Hopkins that made it so we can’t look at fava beans the same way ever again.
3. Voldemort – Otherwise known as He Who Shall Not Be Named. I don’t get him. If I was a powerful dark wizard, I’d use my abilities to give myself hair, not change my appearance to be more snake like and have no hair.
2. The Borg – Star Trek: The Next Generation – I still remember throwing things at the TV with the season 3 cliffhanger where they had assimilated Captain Jean Luc Picard. I’m a huge zombie fan, so naturally the best Trek bad guy has to be the cybernetic zombies that take away your humanity.
And finally…
1. Wile E. Coyote – What did that bird ever do to you?
Is Bristol Blackburn about to meet the love of her life…or her killer?
After the death of her parents, Bristol Blackburn’s life is thrown into chaos and she’s forced to move to Spirit, a small town where shadows are stirring. As she learns to navigate her new school and figures out how to keep her psychic abilities secret from her family, Bristol comes face to face with the boy who makes a regular appearance in her dreams: the gorgeous, possibly deadly, Payne McKnight. Soon she’ll find out if Payne will be the love of her life, or the end of it — and she has no idea which possibility scares her more.
And that’s not even the worst of it. Strange shadows are haunting her dreams, and they’re up to something that could put Bristol and the lives of everyone she loves in jeopardy.

What to expect in 2014

The sun sets on 2013, bringing in 2014.
Looking back at my first post in 2013, I feel humbled by time. I obviously did not achieve the one thing that I thought I really wanted but instead found something totally different. But my life was wrapped in uncertainty then. I was dependent on a bunch other people who weren’t as determined as I was to achieve my goal. Now, that I’m at the helm of my own ship, life has purpose and my future is clear. I’m going to publish even more in 2014.
Here are my publishing goals for the year ahead:
I’m planning to publish my contemporary romance in late Spring. Right now I’m aiming for a cover reveal in early-to-mid February with a blurb on Goodreads and then I’ll get it out to you all by the end of April.
I would like to publish Book 3 of the Nogiku Series by mid Summer. Since I’ve already written three drafts of this and I know what I want to do with my next round of revisions, I think I can shoot for mid July. I’ll also do a cover reveal for this one but not sure when.
In the late Fall, before Thanksgiving, I am aiming to publish 2 or 4 short stories set in the Nogiku world. Most of these are also already written! I worked on them last year during NaNoWriMo when I thought they would be a companion novella to the series. Now, I’m thinking they will be companion shorts instead.
My writing goals are a little different from my publishing goals because I would like to write a brand-new novel in 2014 as well. Whether it’s another book in my Love In The Digital Age collection or the stand-alone New Adult contemporary romance I’ve had the idea for, I don’t know. We’ll see which speaks louder to me as the time becomes available.

The year begins…
My personal goals for the year will be:
Pick back up on my Japanese language work. I got a subscription to TextFugu, and I would like to do a lesson or two per week once I make it through Season 1 of their lessons (which I’m sure I know well as it’s all the basics and I know the basics).
Learn Korean. I would like to learn basic phrases and Hangul before the year is out! My quest to become trilingual begins!
Instagram 365. Now that I’m back on Instagram for good (remember that I was off for a while? Now I’m back), I’d like to post a photo a day. Join me! Use the tag #instagram365. Normal photos and self-portraits.
Knit more. I have so much yarn and so many shawls I’d like to knit.
Do not buy yarn unless I’m at Rhinebeck. See previous goal.
Advance in yoga. I may have gained weight this year, but I continue to become stronger. My yoga practice has advanced and I’m ready to start attending intermediate classes that challenge me more. My main yoga goal is to achieve a headstand away from the wall.
Run more. I picked up running this past year, and I enjoyed it somewhat

Read more. Sometimes my own writing gets in the way of enjoying other people’s writing. Goodreads told me that I read 24 books this past year (I read more than that because I beta read for all my critique partners, some times multiple readings) and I’d like to make that 40. I’m setting the goal there. We’ll see how I do. My kindle is full of books just waiting to be read!

Drink and be merry!
Cheers everyone! Here’s to a happy and successful 2014 for us all!

Goodbye 2013!
Well, 2013 is on its way out the door, and I can’t say that I’m sad to see it go. Looking back on this year, it was a rocky one for me. I had very high highs but very low lows. There was even one point near the beginning of the year that I was praying for a do-over. I have one piece of advice now to give to authors: If your gut is telling you a relationship with an agent or editor is not working out, please listen to your instincts.
With that said, there are some things worth highlighting this year!

2013 Wrap-up: I published 2 books this year!
I published two books!! Yes, two books. Published. Out in the world with strangers reading them. Kind of hard to believe that I got those books back from my agent in late May, revised them to age-up my characters into the New Adult age range, and then published them. REMOVED was published September 11th. RELEASED was published December 17th. I did everything I could possibly do to promote them on my limited budget including Facebook and Goodreads ads, attending a book signing, having a 99¢ sale, and getting a book trailer made for the series. I think I did a pretty good job and learned a whole lot.
Besides writing and publishing two books, I also guest posted on a few blogs, got interviewed by other bloggers, and had a piece on knitting and Japan published by Tofugu.com.

2013 Wrap-up: I finished 4 shawls this year
I knit a few shawls. Admittedly, not 8 in 2013 which was my goal. But when I set that goal at the beginning of the year, I had no idea I was going to be self-publishing two books. That really takes a lot out of you especially when you’re juggling two kids and their schools/babysitting and normal everyday life. But the good news is that I love these shawls and wear them all the time especially now that it’s cold outside. I’m grateful for my knitting that keeps me warm.

2013 Wrap-up: I went on vacation twice
I went on vacation twice. We went to Ocean City, MD as a family and I went on my annual trip to Rhinebeck, NY for the NY Sheep and Wool festival. Both were much needed breaks from my madness. Oh, and KP and I went to Atlantic City for half a weekend. That was also nice.

2013 Wrap-up: we enjoyed the outdoors
I hooped outside, the girls ran in the sprinkler every day they could, and my youngest potty trained and transitioned to her big girl bed. Yay!
Now onto the things that didn’t go so well…
I did not get the publishing contract I wanted but instead I self-published. All in all, I’m happy that I went this route even as I sit back and watch every author friend around me get the contracts. And this is not to say that traditional publishing is over for me either. I have an idea for a contemporary New Adult romance (a stand-alone book that’s not a part of a series) that might be good for a publisher. The future is uncertain but I know it holds lots of books coming from my brain!
I was sick sick sickity sick from January (actually November, 2012) all the way through April with a continuous sinus infection that made me so miserable I cried almost everyday. Then it transitioned straight into spring allergies which I had never had before. Until late June. I am hoping this winter is kinder to me because that really bummed me out big time. I wasn’t able to exercise, gained a little weight, and generally was angry at my sinus cavity morning, noon, and night.
Now, summer was a bit of a disappointment to me. The temperature dipped too low to go to the pool for almost all of August. AUGUST. I can’t even believe that I can say that. When is it normal for it to be in the 70s in August? I’m a summer person through-and-through and this past summer did nothing for me (despite the photo mosaic above that has some good summer memories). Summer of 2014, you are hereby on notice! I better have temps in the 80s or higher or I will appeal to a higher power.
My grandmother died two weeks ago. She was my last grandparent and the one I was the most close to. She took me in when I needed a place to stay and always sent cards and doted on my children. She prayed for my books to be published, and when they were, she read REMOVED and had the funniest comments about it. I will miss her forever.
And I believe that’s it for 2013! We had a good holiday and the kids are happy, and everyone is safe and well. Next post will give you a taste of what’s to come in 2014.

Interracial and Multicultural Romance Giveaway

Interracial & Multicultural Romance Giveaway
If there’s one thing I’m very passionate about it’s seeing diversity in Young Adult and New Adult books. It was one of the many reasons I decided to write REMOVED and the Nogiku Series from the Japanese perspective. It’s a culture plenty of people are unaware about, and since I love it, I thought I would pass along that love to my readers. But diversity should come in every color of human being! As this year has progressed, I’ve watched some new authors come out with multicultural books containing interracial couples and it’s been a sight for sore eyes. There are still a wealth of white people on book covers but the balance is tipping! I suspect 2014 will see an even greater number of multicultural books. I can’t wait to read them.
Honoring some of the authors who have already published diverse books, we have a great giveaway to enter! Check out these authors and their books and enter to win.
Giveaway ends January 5 at 11:59 PM EST. Open internationally. Warning: content possibly
not suitable for minors under the age of 17. eBooks and Digital Prizes will be

I SEE LONDON Cover Reveal
I haven’t been doing the professional author thing for very long, but, in that time, I have met a ton of other authors that I love and support. Chanel Cleeton is a fantastic person and writer. She’s currently living in Korea (basically living my dream) and tweeting and blogging in the middle of the night while we’re all awake here in the U.S. She’s quite dedicated. Her first novel, I SEE LONDON, will be out in February! I’m looking forward to reading it. I’m always swayed by a location outside the U.S. Those books immediately go to the top of my queue
Maggie Carpenter is ready for a change— and to leave her ordinary life in South Carolina behind. But when she accepts a scholarship to the International School in London, a university attended by the privileged offspring of diplomats and world leaders, Maggie might get more than she bargained for.
When Maggie meets Hugh, a twentysomething British guy, she finds herself living the life she always wanted. Suddenly she’s riding around the city in a Ferrari, wearing borrowed designer clothes and going to the hottest clubs. The only problem? Another guy, the one she can’t seem to keep her hands off of.
Half French, half Lebanese, and ridiculously wealthy, Samir Khouri has made it clear he doesn’t do relationships. He’s the opposite of everything Maggie thought she wanted…and he’s everything she can’t resist. Torn between her dream guy and the boy haunting her dreams, Maggie has to fight for her own happy ending. In a city like London, you never know where you stand, and everything can change in the blink of an eye.

About the Author
Originally a Florida girl, at seventeen Chanel moved to London to attend an international university. In the four years that followed, she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, learned how to dance, travelled through Europe, and made lifelong friendships. Chanel fell in love with London and planned to stay there forever. But fate intervened on a Caribbean cruise, when an American fighter pilot with smooth dance moves, swept her off her feet.
Now, a happily ever after later, Chanel is living her next adventure in South Korea. An avid reader and hopeless romantic, she is happiest curled up with a book. She has a weakness for handbags, puppy cuddles, and her fighter pilot husband. Chanel writes New Adult contemporary romances and Young Adult thrillers. Her New Adult debut, I SEE LONDON, will be released by Harlequin (HQN) on February 3, 2014, followed by a sequel, LONDON FALLING, later in the year.

The Sakai Family Tree
I almost forgot I had this little gem tucked away! Back when I first starting writing these books, even I got confused about who was married to whom and where everyone sat on the family tree. My books are epics, and the names are all Japanese, so I figured others would need just as much guidance to Sanaa’s world as I do. Now, I’m horrible with genealogy, and I actually learned a lot while making this tree. I finally know what it means to be a “2nd cousin, once removed” and I got a chance to really dive into Japanese names and use them for this family. I didn’t know how to build a tree though so I opened a free account on ancestry.com and worked on my tree there! Authors, that is a great untapped resource for writing.
I started with Mark Sakai and slowly built outward based on what I knew of him and his family. There are a lot of little tidbits here that are worth their weight in gold for prequels. Take a look at Mark’s mother, Chiharu, and her sister (his aunt), Emi. They were both Sakai, but Mark is born of the older sister and that’s how he managed to be head of the family. The younger sister, Emi, obviously got the shaft here, and her vitriol over the situation leeched down to her daughter, Nobu, Mark’s cousin. Nobu would do just about anything to see Mark Sakai destroyed, and we get our first whiff of that deceit in RELEASED. Too bad that means hard times for Sanaa.

Only a few more days till RELEASED is available to the world! Check back here next week for updates.

Who is Evelyn Dae? You can find out!
I’m so pleased to announce that my friend, Sarah LaFleur, has finally published volume 2 AND a print copy of both volumes together of WHO IS EVELYN DAE? If you haven’t read this, you simply must. Sarah, combined with the amazing illustrative talents of her husband, Matthew LaFleur, weaves together a mystery, a romance, and some damned fine storytelling in this work. I can’t wait to get my own signed copy! (Sarah, the check’s in the mail!) But now the kindle version and print version are both available, so go out there and get these for yourself.

Who is Evelyn Dae? (Paperback Cover)
Evelyn Dae has a secret she wishes she could run away from, and a past she cannot remember. While fishing for clues, she creates diary entries of dream fragments, bits of truth, and wishes that can never come true. In order to protect the secret she’s drowning in, she also devises a set of rules to live by.
But rules are made to be broken, and when it comes to Oliver Knight, Evelyn is in way over her head. Standing on the precipice between land and sea, she’s caught in a net of memories. Time is winding down, and she has a single morning to decide her fate.
Who Is Evelyn Dae? Find out in this illustrated tale that mixes diary sketchbook entries with traditional storytelling.

About the Author
Until December 2012, Sarah LaFleur was a working pianist and teacher. In the midst of a career change, she started writing a story. Less than 17 weeks later she completed her first full-length novel currently being shopped around for traditional publication.
Who Is Evelyn Dae? was born when Sarah decided to launch her writing persona (lafleurdeplume) on social media. By early September 2013, she connected with a wonderful community of writers and readers who convinced her to publish the website story as an ebook.
Sarah continues to write, and has several projects in the works including a sequel to her first novel, an adult science fiction book that stands alone, and multiple guest blog spots. She lives in the greater Chicago metropolitan area with her children, husband, cats, and piano.

Welcome aboard the Murasaki!
Lots of reviewers and readers will comment on my books and say, “There’s hardly any sci-fi in here to discourage non-sci-fi readers.” And deep down, I find those comments both comforting and funny. Because, if sci-fi is written well, it’s accessible to everyone. Not just the geeks. Not just the science lovers. It appears that I did a good job of disguising most of the sci-fi elements in the Nogiku Series but there’s a big one near the end of RELEASED. Since we experience the world through Sanaa, though, we get to explore everything from her perspective. Hopefully you love this journey as much as she does.

Heading to Yūsei
This is it! The final teaser image for RELEASED, Book TWO of the Nogiku Series. Next Tuesday, RELEASED will out and the Nogiku Series will be half over. What an amazing year I’ve had. I can’t wait for you all to read it. Please feel free to share this image and spread it around. It will also be on Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr by the end of the day.
Don’t forget that I have two giveaways going on for signed copies of REMOVED and RELEASED. The Rafflecopter ends tonight!

Bringing my characters to life PLUS a signed books giveaway!
When I wrote the Nogiku books, I always thought they’d make great manga. I could immediately picture both Sanaa and Jiro as drawn characters, swords out, fighting or defending each other. How fun would that be, right? Maybe someday I’ll find the right artists to actually make manga of my stories but until then I wanted to work with someone to get a variation of Sanaa and Jiro drawn. Eventually I’d like to see them and other characters from the series drawn in different styles, but for my first commission, I asked artist, Jed Soriano, to draw them in a classic anime style. We went through several rounds of emails to begin where I described my characters and the world they lived in. Jed and I also discussed my characters’ story arcs, where they were in their lives and the ultimate goal of the book. It was fun to talk with someone about what these “people”, my characters, were like and how I envisioned them.
Here’s the final product of our work together! I love this rendition. It’s action-oriented, and you can tell that Sanaa and Jiro are equals in their stance and readiness.

Sanaa and Jiro ready for battle.
Exciting, right? And this won’t be the only drawing I have done of them! I’d like to see them in different styles, for sure. And I’d like to get more characters drawn too. Let me talk a little about the process of working with an illustrator. Now, all illustrators work differently, but this is what we did on this project.
First we discussed full body stance.

First try. My comments were that Sanaa is skilled with her sword and usually ready to defend herself so I wanted to see her away from Jiro. At his side.

Second try. This one was better but there was too much conflict with their bodies.

Final stance. This one was a success!

Headshots. Specifics of their faces and expressions. This one was almost perfect. I had comments about their hair and that was it.
I was adamant about a few things. No ridiculous cleavage for Sanaa and I wanted to get the Nishikyō grays right along with the swords. But other than that, I only had a few small things to say about each. Hope you like them!
And to celebrate hitting 500 Likes on my Facebook page, I have set up two giveaways! One is for US residents and the other is for International citizens. One signed copy each of REMOVED and RELEASED. The giveaway ends on December 10th and that means if you win, you’ll have RELEASED in your hands before it’s available to the public. So enter below and good luck!
