Sunday Update – April 23, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

What a week, people. This was not how I thought my week would go. When I signed off on my last Sunday Update, I did my usual Sunday thing, a nice long walk in the sunshine. I did my brief walk with Lulu and then I went out for the rest of my walk, like usual. When I came home, I was hot, so I sat down in front of the fan to cool down. This was my mistake. Big mistake. As I sat there, my entire lower back locked up and spasmed. Ouch! I thought, That's not good. I should go stretch this out. (I should have stretched right away instead of sitting.) I did go stretch and it really didn't get any better. I showered and stretched more. My family was gone for the day so I just went about my business. I went to bed in some pain but I took ibuprofen. Then I took it again at 4AM. But I woke up on Monday in a bad way. My husband left for work in NYC, and by the time lunch came around I was in 9 out of 10 pain on the pain scale. I could not sit. I could not stand. I couldn't do anything without excruciating pain.

I called my husband home from NYC (he got an Uber because there wasn't a train for a long time) and he took me to the hospital. They determined it was just muscular and I got muscle relaxers, an anti-inflammatory shot, and then eventually tramadol too. I was drugged and finally not feeling pain. I was able to go home with a regimen of meds. Tuesday was still very painful but I took the anti-inflammatories and rested. I didn't take the muscle relaxers until bedtime and didn't need the tramadol again. Wednesday, I could finally hobble around and just take the anti-inflammatories in the morning and ibuprofen at bed. Thursday, finally I was okay, just really sore. I saw my doctor in the morning and he determined it was a shame this happened to me, but he wasn't sure how it could be prevented. If it happens again, we can get imaging done and talk next steps. By Friday, I was able to go for a short walk outside. Saturday, I was on my Peloton with a short, easy ride. I'm feeling almost normal this morning. Still a little sore but okay.

So I didn't get too much done this week. I watched a lot of TV in bed. I did pick up my writing on Wednesday because sitting at the iMac with back support was much easier than sitting on the couch. I published A Surprise Favor on Friday and that went moderately well. It got a few sales and people are already reading it in KU. I didn't make it to my French class on Wednesday, so I paid a little extra to do a 1-on-1 class yesterday with my teacher. That was totally worth it. We breezed through the material together and went over nasal sounds which are hard for English speakers. I missed a few days of Duolingo this week, so I made most of that progress up as soon as I was feeling better.

I joined Mastodon this week. There are times when I miss the microblogging nature of Twitter, but I'm not going back to that hell-hole. You can find me on Mastodon at https://wandering.shop/@spajonas I will update my website with the link sometime soon.

Lulu stuck close by while I recovered from the back injury.

Me, in the hospital, in a lot of pain.

But spring continued outside!!

And once I was finally able to relax on the couch without pain, I sat and got some knitting done… which is what I'm about to do after hitting publish on this post!

Have a great week everyone! Stay safe and healthy. ❤

A Surprise Favor Is Now Available!

It's here for everyone! A Surprise Favor is now available on Amazon and in Kindle Unlimited. Please take a moment to either purchase or borrow the book today, as it would be nice to see it get a little boost in the ranks from everyone. ❤

This was such a fun book to write! Getting back into Skylar's world helped me get out of my writing funk. I had a blast trying to figure out this story, where it was going, and what it would setup for the rest of the series. My early readers tell me that this was one of their favorites of the series so I clearly managed to get it right. 🙂

A sought-after getaway. A mother’s relentless vengeance. A desperate pursuit to unveil buried secrets…

Skylar Kawabata longs for a peaceful retreat at the lavish Lee villa on Laguna, seeking sun, surf, delicious food, and friendly company to escape her woes. But when she crosses paths with an old flame during an impromptu celebration, their reunion forces her to reevaluate her connections — particularly as Takemo enters the scene once again. Once an adversary, Takemo has since evolved into a kind-hearted, resourceful, and charismatic man who captures Skylar’s attention even though he infuriates her.

Yet Skylar’s supposed haven is far from serene. A vengeful lawsuit from her own mother sends her life into a tailspin, and she must act fast to salvage her reputation or risk losing everything. Teaming up with her new head of security — a former foe turned ally — Skylar embarks on a crucial mission to retrieve backup drives that hold evidence of her troubled childhood.

As lethal foes close in, Skylar is confronted with her darkest memories while striving to shield all she holds dear. Can she outwit her relentless pursuers and obtain the crucial proof, or will she lose everything in a high-risk game of cat and mouse?

Sunday Update – April 16, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

It was Spring Break here this week! But we didn't really do anything, and I'm okay with that. Last year, we went to Disney World, and I got covid. So I'm happy to be home and healthy, that's for sure.

Monday and Tuesday we were at the beach house. Monday was a chill day but we went shopping in the afternoon. Tuesday, we slept in, exercised, ate lunch, packed up and drove home. Traffic was easy both on the way to the beach house and home, so that was nice. I love driving my car, but Lulu was a wreck the whole way home. We have tried drugging her in the past with something we get from the vet, but it really doesn't work. Last night my husband heard the thunder rolling in and it reminded him of the Thundershirt for dogs. I looked it up and a lot of the reviews said it works good for dogs who have travel anxiety, so I bought one. We'll use it on the next long car ride.

Wednesday was French class. So far so good! I'm understanding the lessons and my teacher, and I'm not too lost. Thursday, I went grocery shopping because we didn't have any food at home. I splurged and got lobster tails for us. Hey, we didn't travel anywhere but the beach house so why not?

Friday was a chill day at home. My husband worked on a big home project in 90ºF heat. He was in bed by 9PM. Lol. He finished it up yesterday. It was basically an extension of our gutter drain all the way out to the street.

I am working A LOT and I'm getting a ton done. I updated the blog here. I updated my cozy mystery pen name's blog and website because I've decided to write mysteries again! I updated all the covers for my cozy mystery pen name and all of those books are in KU now. Updated the pen name's FB page and revived it. Set up ads for the pen name books on FB. I worked on the next Kimura Sisters book and I'm at close to 14k on that. I set up posts on SFR Station for the rest of April and the first week of May. I'm working on some fun images for the Flyght Series. Hoo boy, am I tired.

Oh, another thing of note. I've decided to go on a anti-inflammatory diet. It's not much different than the way I already eat since I'm a pescatarian. I noticed recently that I've been in a lot of pain some days. That weird kind-of all-over pain one has when they're sick with the flu. That aching, hurting feeling. You probably know it. And it was worse in my broken leg too, often showing up there first before my whole body. It was horrible our first night at the beach house. What did I have to eat that night? A fish fry. Fried shrimp and scallops and french fries. Yes, they were delicious. No, they are not good for my body. The same thing happened the week before when I had nachos for dinner (fried chips). So first and foremost, I've given up fried foods and gone low-sugar again. I'm watching my body to see how it flares after other foods like pasta or bread. So far, those are fine. Anyway, just thought I would mention it. Inflammation has been worse since I got covid, and I know I'm not the only one this has impacted. If you are feeling a lot of pain, maybe think about your diet too.

It's beautiful around these parts!

I love being at the beach house!

Lulu keeping me company.

At French class. This place teaches kids too.

We had Easter dinner at the Lobster House in Cape May, and it was DELICIOUS.

At the beach house, my husband and his garden. The first photo is all the kale that just grew there like crazy while we were gone. He pulled everything out and planted new things. And then we had a fire on our last night, roasted marshmallows and made s'mores.

I get caught up on podcasts or audiobooks every Saturday on the bike. This ride was through the vineyards in France.

I'm making good progress on the Kimura Sisters book. I'm actually way past this and approaching the halfway mark!

We had such beautiful weather this week that I enjoyed my martini on the deck on Wednesday.

Finally, me and my fan. I'm going to be using it a lot this coming summer as I sit here and work!

The Art of World-Building in Space Opera Romance: Creating Unique Planets and Societies

Hey there, space opera romance fans! I'm so excited to dive into world-building today. If you're a fan of science fiction romance, then you know how important it is to have a well-constructed, believable universe for characters to play in.

But what exactly goes into creating a unique planet and society in a space opera romance? That's what we're here to explore today. From physical characteristics to cultural norms, from technology to conflict, we'll be covering all the key elements you need to consider when building your own futuristic world.

The Basics of Space Opera Romance

Space Opera Romance is a genre of science fiction and fantasy literature that combines elements of the space opera genre with those of the romance genre. Two saucy genres that go great together! It often involves a romantic relationship between two main characters, set against an intergalactic backdrop.

Space Opera Romance is often a heroic quest, with a hero and heroine traveling on a space-faring mission, or a large-scale interplanetary adventure. Think Avatar, or even Serenity! In this genre, romance is not used for the sole purpose of providing a happy ending, as it is typically done in traditional romance stories, but is instead an integral part of the larger story and its themes.

If you want your story to really take off, your readers need to be fully transported into your universe and all the nitty-gritty details of its different societies. And that's where world-building comes in. By whipping up some seriously cool, one-of-a-kind planets and cultures, you can craft a world unlike any other and fill it with characters that readers will fall in love with.

Literal World-Building

When it comes to inventing totally fresh and out-of-this-world planets for your space opera romance, the options are pretty much endless. You can draw inspiration from all kinds of places, like actual planets we know and love, or cool legends and myths. Or, you can mix and match different elements to create a planet that's like nothing anyone's ever seen before. And of course, you can always use your own wild imagination to dream up something that's one hundred percent unique.

Techniques for creating unique planetary landscapes range from the traditional, such as choosing a certain color palette, or selecting plants and animals, to the more intricate, such as establishing climate and weather patterns, or forming societies and cultures. Authors should also consider the gravitational pull of the planet, its geography, the atmosphere and the harshness of the environment, and the vicinity of other worlds as well as any other factors that could affect the lives of the inhabitants.

When it comes to world-building in space opera romance, it's all about finding the right balance between realism and imagination. Science is a big part of that. You want your world to be believable and make sense, so it's important to consider the science behind it. For example, if you're creating a planet with two suns, you'll want to think about how that would affect its climate and environment. But that doesn't mean you can't get creative! You can still add in your own unique twists and ideas to make your world truly stand out.

The Worlds of the Flyght Series

In the Flyght Series, I used real places on Earth to inform the two solar systems connected by jump gates.

The Californikos System is based almost entirely on the terrain and culture of California.

Palo Alto is a central planet, the hub of the solar system, and has a diverse range of landscapes, just like California. It has rolling hills, deserts, forests, and coastal regions. It’s also known for its mild weather, just like California's Mediterranean climate. This planet is also the hub of technological advancements and innovation, just like Silicon Valley in California.

Sonoma is known for its fertile lands and rich soil, just like California's Central Valley. It’s a major producer of crops and foodstuffs and is an important source of food for the other planets in the solar system. It’s also known for its wine and vineyards, as well as being the center of entertainment and high society, much like Hollywood.

Laguna is a popular vacation destination planet, with stunning beaches, warm waters, and beautiful coastal towns. It’s popular with surfers and beachgoers, and it’s known for its laid-back, sun-soaked lifestyle, just like California's beach towns. Of course, the beachfront properties and chic towns are especially popular with the rich and famous. To be seen there vacationing is the hope of pretty much every influential person in the system.

Getting It Right

Another important factor in balancing realism and imagination is consistency. Once you've established the rules and laws of your world, it's important to stick to them. If you create a society where people can teleport from planet to planet, you'll want to make sure that you don't suddenly have someone driving a spaceship later on. Keeping your world consistent helps it feel more real and believable, and keeps your readers fully immersed in the story. So don't be afraid to get creative, but make sure you're also being mindful of the rules you've set for your world.

When it comes down to it, building cool planets and coming up with believable societies is what makes space opera romance so much fun. Sure, it's good to get inspired by other stuff, but it's even better to use your own ideas to come up with something completely fresh and new. And don't forget, every little detail matters! From the way people dress to the kind of food they eat, every single thing you add to your world helps make the story more real and relatable to readers.

So if you want to write a killer space opera romance, don't skimp on the world-building. With a little bit of planning and a lot of imagination, you can write a story that keeps readers coming back for more!

Sunday Update – April 9, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

It's Easter Sunday and we're at the beach house, so I'm going to keep this short. Not a lot happened this week so it shouldn't be a long update anyway. Happy Easter to all who celebrate! We have spring break this entire week.

This past week, my husband was gone Tuesday through Friday, so we were on our own at home. I juggled some jazz band and track for the kids. The cleaning ladies came on Wednesday, and I had my first in-person French class! French class was fun. It's just me and two other people who are invested in learning French. The teacher is a native French person and she immersed us right away. I'm happy with it so far! Just gotta do my homework. :)

We drove down to the beach house yesterday. The drive was easy and traffic was light. The house is great. The pool outside is destroyed, but we're not going to talk about that now because it makes me depressed (long story). I'm really looking forward to retiring here someday. We have ideas of the renovations we want to do on this place over the next 8-10 years and then we'll move here permanently and probably split our time between here and South Carolina. Yes, we have plans.

In writing news, I started on the next Kimura Sisters book and I'm on chapter 3 of that. I set it aside this weekend to work on making new covers for my Miso Cozy Mysteries series under my pen name. I just moved all of my books over into Kindle Unlimited for that pen name too. The covers I'm making with Midjourney, the AI image tool. Every image I make, though, needs a lot of work, so I'm touching things up in Pixelmator, making changes and adding in titles and what not. It's a lot of fun! I hope to be done with the covers today and then I'll update them on the website and Amazon maybe tomorrow.

Spring is looking mighty fabulous already!

Made it out for a brief walk yesterday after driving here. The tide was out so I walked on the beach and then walked back home via the road.

Lulu waiting for Daddy to come home. She loves sleeping on pillows on the couch, wherever she is. And here she is begging me to veggie chips. I give her the green ones. Lol.

And finally, my French language textbook and activity book. I already knew plenty and could understand quite a bit in the first lesson. I'm excited to learn more!

That's it for this week everyone! Stay safe and healthy.

A Surprise Favor Is Now Available Direct For A Limited Time!

In an effort to make my books available to people outside of the Amazon ecosystem, since I was previously on all the retailers for almost 10 years prior to 2023, I have decided to make new releases going forward available direct for 2 weeks prior to being available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.

A Surprise Favor, Book 3 in the Amagi Series, is now available Direct until April 20, 2023 (10PM EDT). Ebooks are delivered via BookFunnel and can be loaded onto any device from there. This book will be available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited on April 21st.

This was such a fun book to write! Getting back into Skylar's world helped me get out of my writing funk. I had a blast trying to figure out this story, where it was going, and what it would setup for the rest of the series. Only 2 more books after this one and the story will be complete! I hope you're ready…

Sunday Update – April 2, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

We had a busy week here due to my husband being out of town Monday through Thursday. He was off in Seattle, so I had to hold down the fort while he was gone. This meant lots of extra walking for me with Lulu since he usually handles the evening walks. And of course, everything else fell on my shoulders too, including all the driving, cooking, etc. We made it through! And he made it back in time to see my youngest daughter's opening night of Spongebob Squarepants The Musical. They did a great job! And now that's all over too.

In writing life, I finished the edit of A Surprise Favor and now I'm in the proofreading stage that I'm combining with the “create audiobook” stage! Yes, I figured that if I was going to sit and have the computer read the book to me, I might as well make it an AI audiobook too. Two birds, one stone. I should be done with it tomorrow evening! My plan is to then send the ebook to my few ARC readers and my second proofreader, and then have it up for sale direct by Thursday. I would then publish it on Amazon on the 14th.

In other writing news, for the past year I had thought that I might want a change. I'm coming up on my 10 year anniversary as a published author, and I think I need to pivot a little. I thought maybe I would go extreme, start a pen name, and start over. But I don't think I want to do that. I've given it a lot of thought for the past year and I don't think it's the right move. But I do think that I need a change and want to write in a slightly different genre, so I'm working on a fantasy romance idea I have instead. Sci-fi romance and fantasy romance are not all that different in term of genre conventions and audiences, so I think this is a good match for me. Plus, I can still stick with my favorite tropes and themes and not be too off-base. I'm excited about my idea, too! It'll be fun to write. I think I'll get started on it this summer!

Lots of Lulu this week! She was my constant companion while my husband was out of town. Love the last photo of her being spoiled at daycare with a bed AND a blanket.

Spring is here!! Everything is starting to bloom.

I spend a lot of time on this couch. It's my homebase.

I crossed over the 4K minutes threshold on Peloton this week! Right on track to hit 16K by the end of the year.

My husband made dosas last week. They were soooooo good. Totally nap-inducing.

Spongebob the Musical! That's my child in the center in the pink metallic pants.

Totally random photo. This is not my house. But you know how you live in a neighborhood for a long time and you wonder what the inside of some houses look like? This one is about two blocks away and went on sale a month or so ago. It sold and they put a ton of horrible old furniture out to the curb. Then this week, this pile of hideous carpet was out on the lawn while contractors installed hardwood floors in the place. I had to take a photo! It looks like they murdered Cookie Monster!

Finally, we had a 70ºF day yesterday so I had my afternoon tea on the back deck. Ahhhhh. I love pretty much any season but winter.

Have a great week everyone! Stay safe and healthy.

April 2023 Goals

Hello spring!! I love spring. 🌸

What happened with March's Goals?

Finish A Surprise Favor, the next Amagi Series book. Done! It's finished and I'm currently in the proofreading phase. Also, I'm making an audiobook for it with a new TTS tool I have. These voices are pretty nice!

Start writing a new series of short stories. I did not start writing a short story series and I may have to postpone this until I'm done with the next Kimura Sisters book.

Get the newsletter set up for my AI Fiction Coaching business. Didn't get around to this.

Keep going with Facebook Ads. I kept going and I earned a slight profit! But a freebooksy I bought didn't help me. I think I'll only be doing them for new free books now.

Keep going with my secret AI art project. I posted some of these but ran out of time this month.

Setup my social media posts for the month. I'm slacking on this.

Stay on top of my Duolingo Italian, Japanese, French, and Swedish. I kept up with my language learning!

Continue with my fitness goals. I'm definitely still working out and it's going well so far, except for a shoulder that's hurting.

Reading, TV, and knitting. Watched some good TV this month, and I even read and knitted!

April Goals

Publish A Surprise Favor. Yep! It's happening this month! But what I'm going to do is a little different than usual. I'm going to publish it direct first for 2 weeks, and then it'll be for sale on Amazon and in Kindle Unlimited after that. This way, if you are not an Amazon customer, you can still buy it! I will probably do this with all of my books going forward if this works out for people.

Start writing the next Kimura Sisters book, Tilli's Second Chance. I'm going to give myself 5 weeks to write this one since it's a novella. We'll see if I can manage it!

Start in-person French classes. I signed up for in-person French classes here in the next town over via Alliance Francaise. I'm super excited to be learning this with other people. It's an 11-week course on Wednesday mornings, and it ends the week before we leave for London and Paris.

Stay on top of my Duolingo Italian, Japanese, French, and Swedish. Keep going!

Get the newsletter set up for my AI Fiction Coaching business. I will get around to this this month.

Publish a post about space opera romance. I have been writing some blog posts for here about space opera romance. I have one ready to go for this month and one for next.

Publish my Flyght art project. I've been working on a series of images for the Flyght Series. They are super fun and go along with the space opera romance post I will be publishing.

Keep up with my secret art project. I need to sit down, get the images made, and schedule them all out for the month.

Exercise, TV, knitting, and reading. Keep going, Stephanie!

That's it for this month! Have a great April everyone!

Fantasy Romance vs. Sci-fi Romance

So I've been thinking for a while now that I need a little change. I'm almost at 10 years published, and though I love my sci-fi romance, the overall genre has taken a turn in the last few years to more monsters and aliens, which is not really my thing.

How many of you are fantasy romance readers? I have an idea for a fantasy romance series that could be a lot of fun. It would have a lot of the same voice and type of characters that I already do, but of course, be more fantasy. Lol. (I don't want to give too much away.) Is it crazy to publish it all under my current name? I feel like the genres are pretty similar, but maybe I'm too much in the author world to see the difference.

Let's discuss! Are you a fantasy romance reader?

Would that be something you'd be interested in seeing from me? You can be totally honest. If it's not something my current readers want from me, then I'll keep my original idea of a pen name and start fresh. But maybe that's not the right move! I figure I should check first. (Yes, I'm still going to write under this name. Just less frequently.)

Also, feel free to recommend your favorite fantasy romance books in the comments!
