Sunday Update – November 12, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

This has been a crazy few weeks for me, so I'll try to make this brief if I can.

During the last of October and beginning of November, I was dealing with a lot of website issues. Basically, a lot of bots were bogging down my server and causing all of my websites to stop loading. Installing plugins to help and uninstalling other plugins to streamline my WordPress installations didn't help. Eventually, my host had to go nuclear and stop bots before WordPress ever even loaded. That seems to have helped.

I also figured out that the plugin I use for newsletters, MailPoet, is causing problems with too many cron jobs on my server. I had it installed on several sites, so I went through and deleted it from all of them except here. I moved my newsletters for Steph Gennaro over to Encharge, and I will do the same with S. J. Pajonas later this week. It was a lot of work setting it up for Steph Gennaro, but hopefully now that I've done it once, I can do it faster for my main name. This will also require more work from me in building newsletters, but since I only send once per month, it shouldn't be too bad. I'm a little sad that I need to do this, but ultimately, I think the move will be good, as I'll have more access to tools via Encharge. I hope to move my books wide again in late 2024, and I will be using Encharge with direct sales too.

And then, after all of that, I went to Las Vegas for the 20Booksto50k conference! I flew out last Sunday, which is why I didn't update here, and flew back home on Friday. It was such an amazing week, full of good friends, amazing author-related content, yummy food, and fun times. The Future Fiction Academy and AI4CES sponsored a night of drinks on Monday at the Tipsy Robot in Miracle Mile. That was super fun! The robots made drinks, and we talked about using AI tools. A lot of people showed up! And I was really heartened to hear about how the AI tools have helped authors keep writing and find their audiences. It was everything I hoped for and more!

The rest of the conference is a bit of a blur. Lol. I went to the “AI: Boogeyman or not?” panel which had plenty of good information and some misinformation, especially about the WGA contract. One panelist had previously posted a giant red slide with “AI is a deal with the devil” on it. Sigh. It was sad to see such inflammatory rhetoric using religion to appeal to people's fears. Then Elizabeth Ann West held a fantastic presentation on writing with AI that got people really excited. That was super fun! I went to a panel on writing thrillers that was interesting and several other presentations on writing craft. Also, the Becca Syme presentations were great too.

During the week, most of my nights were spoken for. We did the Sphere on Sunday night. AI meetup drinks and dinner on Monday. I had dinner and/or drinks with friends the rest of the week as well. It was a lot of peopling. A LOT OF PEOPLING. No wonder I feel like I might be coming down with something.

Anyway, I had a fabulous time! My flights were both fine. I got there and back, easy peasy. My Kindle Paperwhite did die on this trip though. It refuses to turn on, no matter what I do. So I'm hoping the Oasis goes on sale for Black Friday! This week I have a lot of catch-up work to do.

What have I been reading and watching? Not a lot of reading since my Kindle died. I just finished a re-watch of For All Mankind's last season since the new one just started.

Some landmarks from Las Vegas! Flying in, I saw the Hoover Dam out the window. Plus the Sphere is both really cool and really cute.

The main conference hall on vendor day was crazy busy! I went and hugged most of my friends this day, and I went to see the Brads at the Vellum table to introduce myself since I help to administrate the Vellum Users group on Facebook.

It was great seeing and being with friends!

The panel discussions and presentations were all pretty great! We're changing minds and teaching people new ways of working with technology!

The social aspects of the convention cannot be beat. We did karaoke, lots of dinners and drinks, cosplay, and of course, I went gambling one night on my own.

I tried to document my outfits each day so people could find me easier.

I struggled with being gluten free at this conference, though. There were plenty of business lunches I did where I couldn't eat anything, or the waiter just didn't show up to take my order after everyone else. Now I know. I averaged about one good meal per day with snacks, and that was it. The next time I leave to go anywhere, I will bring my own food. Lesson learned. (Pictured here, the Clif Bar I ate for lunch one day.)

Since my Kindle died, I treated myself to a hardcover book from Kevin J Anderson. It was nice to talk to him and get a signature.

And now that I'm back home, it's back on the bike for an awesome 2-for-1 ride and sitting next to my snoozing and snoring dog. ❤

I hope you all had a great two weeks! I plan to make it around to read blogs later today and get caught up. Have a safe and healthy week, everyone!

November 2023 Goals

November is a big month! I have a lot going on, so let's get to it!

What happened with October's Goals?

Keep writing and teaching with the FFA. Yep! I did a lot of FFA work this past month. Everything is going well there! And I did some writing on each of my books this month too.

Go to Rhinebeck for the NY Sheep and Wool festival! I went and we had so much fun! I wish I could do that every weekend.

Prep for 20Books in Vegas. I've done very minimal 20Books prep and I leave on Sunday. Ugh. I am terrible at prepping for trips. I prefer to just wing them. I'll get this done this week.

Launch Pets in Space 8. This anthology is going really well! Thank you to all of you who purchased it and left reviews. It's much appreciated!

Stick with the Peloton. I did my best this month. I dealt with an infection the last week of October, and that kept me off the bike. But I'm still riding the bike and using Peloton!

Keep going with Duolingo, reading, knitting, and TV. I have done all of this except for reading! I feel like, when knitting is happening, I'm not reading and vice versa.

November Goals

Keep working on my books. I have three books in progress right now: the fantasy rom-com, the cozy mystery, and now an Amagi Series novella. Each week, I'm writing on one of them. It's working for me, and I'm just happy I'm writing at all.

Go to the 20Booksto50k Conference in Las Vegas. This is a big one. It's a huge conference, and I will be there both as an author and an AI advocate as part of the Future Fiction Academy. I will probably be exhausted by the time I get back, but I do plan on having some fun there. I want to play roulette and hang out with my long time author friends.

Not get sick after the conference. Stephanie, remember to bring Vitamin C and a mask! Lol.

Stick with the Peloton. More working out! I have added in a heavier arms weight session each week, and I'm hoping this will make me a little stronger. We'll see.

Thanksgiving and my husband's birthday. We've got two holidays this month, too. Thanksgiving, which I hope to spend with family. My husband's 50th birthday, which we plan to celebrate with opera, good food, and then he'll be going to Vegas with his friends.

Keep going with Duolingo, reading, knitting, and TV. All the same, same.

That's it for this month! Have a great November everyone!

Sunday Update – October 29, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

How is it already the end of October? I don't even know where this whole year went! Probably because it was crazy busy per usual. Just like this past week. I barely remember what I did!

It was the last week for both field hockey and marching band! Last practices, last games, last competitions. I'm so relieved I won't have to worry about carpooling for either of those anymore.

I'm pretty sure there was work. I produced another video for the Future Fiction Academy and I designed some layouts of the lite version of our prompting tool. I taught a class on Tuesday as well.

Besides all of that, there was exercise, knitting, and writing. I'm not really working on any particular writing project. A little on the cozy mystery. A little on an Amagi novella. A little on my rom com. I'm just working on whatever I'm interested in each day. For knitting, I've been working on my second lap blanket and a Musselburgh hat. Unfortunately, I spent the week battling an infection, but now the meds have worked and I'm feeling much better, so I didn't get on the bike much. There was plenty of walking though!

What have I been reading or watching? Not a lot of reading happening. I haven't found anything to really catch my attention lately. The husband and I just finished the second season of Invasion. It was only okay. Meh. I'm watching Foundation Season 2 and loving it. I've also been watching some YouTube here and there on Notion and AI stuff. I'm always trying to learn.

I forgot to show y'all what I bought at the Sheep and Wool Festival. The photo of 3 skeins of wool are for a cowl that we're all knitting on. The photo of 4 skeins is for a sweater. And then there's the bargello kit which I hope to start soon!

I've been enjoying the colorful trees around here. Another week and all the leaves will be gone.

Lulu is always either by my side or in bed… or wanting something from me so staring at me for hours straight. Lol.

The end of field hockey season and marching band season. The last marching band competition was at Rutgers yesterday and it was televised so we could watch it from home.

I've been trying to take the time to knit and relax in the mornings. I either watch some videos on YouTube or watch the news (or both).

This is a reminder to go get your mammogram if you haven't this past year!

And I miss my besties. It was so great all being together last weekend. I wish we could do it more often.

Have a great week, everyone! Stay safe and healthy. ❤

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Short post this week since I'm away with my friends at the NY Sheep and Wool festival. It was a fine week. It was busy and I got a lot done. I'm now writing every morning, which is great! And I went out for a lot walks because the weather was great until Friday and Saturday. I didn't have to edit my videos for FFA, but I still did a lot of other stuff for FFA.

Here's my photos from the week!

It was my cousin's 50th birthday this week so we all celebrated at her house on Sunday.

I cleaned my car this week and the neighborhood cat showed up to inspect my job and check out the garden.

Scenes from our Air BNB and the Duchess Count Fairgrounds! The house were staying at has chickens, geese, and ducks. Fresh eggs. We brought a lot of food. And I saw a ton of old friends at the fair.

We had a lovely show this week of autumn leaves! So pretty.

Have a great week, everyone!

Sunday Update – October 15, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

This is the week I attempted to get caught up on things, and I mostly succeeded. I got through all the email in my inbox! That was a feat all its own. Then I also managed to make it around to some blogs too and comment. That felt great. I miss seeing what y'all are up to when I'm super busy. The good news is that my schedule will be a little lighter in the coming weeks because we have hired some people to edit our videos. I'm going to be editing my class from yesterday this morning after I'm done with this blog post, and then I don't have to edit my classes anymore. I will just be editing videos that I make for the FFA, and that will be fewer videos per week.

We had a week of sunshine here and that was needed. One of my scheduled Peloton days, I decided not to ride the bike and went out for a walk instead, so I ended up walking 5 of the 7 days! It gave me some blisters, but it was worth it. Looking back on the week, I'm not sure what else I did. I was certainly busy with lots of carpooling, driving, and just general life stuff, but other than that, I can't remember anything else.

In writing news, I have decided to set up some live-writing times with my students at the FFA for Monday and Thursday mornings. I will work on MY books then. I think if I have the commitment of being there and working with the students, I'm more likely to do it. We'll see!

Today, we're off to my cousin's house for a party in the afternoon/early evening. She's turning 50! I can't wait to celebrate with family. And next week is the NY Sheep and Wool festival in Rhinebeck, NY! I also can't wait for this one.

What have I been reading and watching? No reading this week. I watched the whole Beckham documentary on Netflix, and I really enjoyed it. I've always admired David Beckham and seeing the documentary made me like him even more. Then I was on a roll with soccer/football so I decided to watch the Messi documentary on Apple TV+. It was good, though I had no idea that MLS had such a following here in the US. Wow. The crowds at the games were nuts! I kind of want to go! I also have picked up Foundation on Apple TV+ in this second season, we have been watching Stephen Colbert in the evenings and Great British Baking Show. It's been some good TV watching. I'm pleased. (I'm too lazy to link up any of the shows, but I'm sure you can find them.)

My job in this household is to hold chews for Lulu so that she can chew on them. She doesn't have thumbs and I do. Also, my daughter took a bunch of funny 0.5 photos of Lulu this week on my camera. And Lulu loves to curl up in her bed on the cold days.

Out for walkies! We tried to enjoy the weather as much as possible.

We had our marching band festival in town yesterday and my husband was there all day because he's now the high school band treasurer. He bought me this t-shirt. Lol. It's amazingly perfect.

Have a great week, everyone! Stay safe and healthy. ❤

Sunday Update – October 8, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

This was another crazy busy week. Are you surprised? I'm not! All of my weeks have been crazy busy and this was no exception. The launch of Pets in Space 8 took up a fair amount of time. I had to update my blog here, send out my newsletter, get Facebook ads up and running, etc. It was a lot of work but very worth it. I love Pets in Space! It's such a great anthology to be a part of. ❤

We also “shipped” software this week at the Future Fiction Academy (no one actually ships software anymore, we deploy it, but the phrase still applies). We introduced our very advanced prompting tool to our members this week after working on it for MONTHS. It's still a little rough around the edges and very advanced so we have a lot of work to do teaching people how to use it. That's fine! I love teaching people how to make software bend to their needs. Even software I helped develop!

And that was basically all I did last week. Because shipping the software meant I was in a lot of meetings, making documentation, making walk-through videos, updating the website, interfacing with my team… I only had time to make sure Pets in Space 8 was good and then I slept.

I missed going around to all the blogs this week and seeing what you're up to. I hope to spend some time blog reading this afternoon, once I'm done with a Youtube Live at 1PM. I'm also planning on going out for a long walk today since it's finally not raining. I'm sure Lulu will appreciate it.

This week was also the last week of SFR Station. It is officially closed for business. I'm relieved to have that extra work off my plate.

What have I been reading and watching? The husband and I were at a loss as to what to watch, but late night TV is back now that the writers' strike is over. Yay! We watched some Stephen Colbert and John Oliver. We also decided to watch a movie that we stretched out over 3 nights. Guy Ritchie's Covenant on Amazon Prime Video was really good. I don't usually watch a lot of war movies but this one had a great plot and acting. I was glad we gave it a chance. In my down time, I've been watching Notion videos on Youtube and I started reading a new book. We'll see if I stick with it. If I do, I'll talk about it next week.

The youngest child needed to have blood drawn for testing, so we treated ourselves to Starbucks afterward. 😂

Even though I was busy, I still made time for exercise several times during the week. It's important! I did a 30-min Climb Ride on Thursday that nearly did me in, in a good way. Hoo boy was I tired that night!

Have a great week, everyone! Stay safe and healthy. ❤

Writing Tilli's story was a lot of fun for me. The Astrology of Tilli’s Second Chance

When I sit down to write my characters for any story, I’m often drawn to astrology to make sense of the traits I have in my head. Usually, I pair together opposite signs in the hopes that their differences help create some tension. Who doesn’t love some good tension in a story, anyway, am I right? But this time, sitting down to write Tilli’s Second Chance, I knew that the plot had plenty of tension, and my characters had history already. It was time for a pairing of similar signs this time around!

The pairing of a Capricorn and a Taurus is an interesting one. Tilli the Capricorn and Kaito the Taurus are both earth signs, which means they are practical, down-to-earth, and reliable. They are also both very ambitious and driven, which makes them a great team. Almost a match made in heaven! Capricorns are ruled by Saturn, the planet of discipline and responsibility. Tauruses are ruled by Venus, the planet of love and beauty. This means that Tilli and Kaito are both very loyal and committed to their relationship. They are also both very passionate about each other, which keeps the spark alive in their relationship.

Tilli is the more outgoing and social of the two, though she struggles to keep her friendships intact. She can be ruthless and cuts people out of her life when they betray her. For good reason, too! Capricorns may seem heartless, but inside, they are all looking for acceptance. From his Taurus sun sign, Kaito is more reserved and introspective, and he keeps quiet until he knows that Tilli is the real thing, a genius who’s been held back. His moon is in Scorpio, though, and that gives him the ability to stand by Tilli in tough situations. When Kaito reveals his big secret to Tilli, her moon in Cancer helps give her a deep emotional understanding and sympathy, enough to forgive him. They balance each other out perfectly.

Matching two earth signs together can be a bit of a challenge. Both signs can be overly cautious, risk-averse, and stubborn. When two stubborn people get together, it can lead to a lot of arguments and disagreements. Tilli and Kaito are at odds when they first meet, and Kaito isn’t sure of her old-school paper-and-pencil ways. But once they get past this, they figure out they can work together. Because they’re willing to compromise and communicate, their relationship deepens.

Overall, Tilli and Kaito are a great match, and they were a lot of fun to write. Sometimes stoic and reliable earth signs can really surprise you!

Sunday Update – October 1, 2023

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

This was another crazy busy week. I feel like they're all crazy busy now as we ramp up work at the Future Fiction Academy and we get more students daily. I taught twice this week and I edited several other labs. (Today, I have to edit the lab that I taught yesterday.) I don't have any days off anymore and it's a little hectic and draining, but I am having a great time, which is important. I just need to find some down time soon.

It rained a lot in the last week. It shouldn't be news, but it is. You should have seen the footage from Manhattan and Brooklyn on Friday. Nuts. They got a stupid amount of rain. We got it too and thankfully we mostly stayed dry. There was a little water in one part of our basement, but it was fine. We didn't have to do anything about it. I'm glad the rain is done for now. It was getting depressing just day after day after day of raining. Lulu doesn't like the rain so getting her outside to do her business was tough. She had two accidents in the house and I couldn't even be mad about it. I felt bad for her.

We have an issue with my electrical hook-up to charge my car. I think there's a short in the system and we need to call an electrician out to deal with it. My car wouldn't charge the other day. The tablet kept saying “Charging, Not Charging, Charging, Not Charging…” over and over again. I thought the problem was the car, but to be sure, I decided to take it over to a local charge spot and charge it there. The car charged with no problems there! So that leaves the problem with our house. At least I now know what the problem is. Hopefully we get it fixed soon.

I had dental work done on Thursday. Normally, I'm okay with the dentist. I've had good teeth my whole life, but I clench my teeth at night and grind them some too. So I had to have two fillings replaced because I had ground them down. That left me unable to eat for hours and kinda down and depressed about it. It's a bit traumatic to be kept in that chair for so long with two people in your mouth and drilling and water and scraping and all the noise. Ugh. So I wasn't in a good mood much on Thursday. I'm glad that's over.

Today, I'm planning on taking a nice long walk since the weather is finally nice again. And I'd like to watch something new at lunch. What to choose?

What have I been reading and watching? I finished reading Carysa Locke's new novella that will be in Pets in Space 8 and I enjoyed it very much! I'm still listening to John Scalzi's newest book, Starter Villain. I listened while I was on the bike on Friday and I had to step pedaling several times because I was laughing so hard. On TV, the husband and I are caught up on Invasion on Apple TV+ and it is still not great. I don't think we'd even be watching if we had something else to watch. I finished the latest season of Call the Midwife on Netflix and it was great. Every episode made me cry. Lol.

Meeting of the doggie minds. I think it's funny they are all white dogs. That's Walter and Lucky there.

Here I am charging my car at the municipal center in the pouring rain. Another reason I want to have our house charging station fixed, so I don't have to go somewhere in the rain if I don't have to.

Have a great week, everyone! Stay safe and healthy.

October 2023 Goals

I went to bed last night and I said, “Is it really October tomorrow?” Yep. Yes, it is.

What happened with September's Goals?

Keep writing. I did keep writing this month, although still not a lot. We're “suffering” from growing pains at the FFA in that we're doing really well, and we're all working hard to stay on top of it! So that's great for the business but not so great for my writing. It's fine though. I know I'll publish again eventually. Concentrating on the FFA is my number one priority right now.

Keep teaching and live-writing with FFA. I worked A LOT this month and it was fun! I had a blast. Some weeks were more hectic than others, and I did lose some sleep, but overall, it was a great month.

Stick with the Peloton. I only had one week where I slacked off a little. Not bad.

Get the kids back to school and re-establish my routine. The first month back at school is always the hardest. There are also a lot of Jewish holidays in September that throw off the back-to-school routine. (We're not Jewish, but this part of the tri-state area always has off for these holidays.)

See my doctors this month. Saw my doctors and I'm pretty healthy. I think a lot of that has to do with the amount of cardio exercise I do. I started using a phytoestrogen cream recently and I think it's helping with my sleep.

Keep going with Duolingo, reading, knitting, and TV. I did everything here but knitting. I don't think I've knit in three months now. That makes me a little sad.

October Goals

Keep writing and teaching with the FFA. I'm hoping to add more chapters to both my fantasy romance and my cozy mystery this month, and I have classes to teach as well.

Go to Rhinebeck for the NY Sheep and Wool festival! I'm soooo looking forward to this! Though we didn't get the same house as last year (boo) I'm sure we'll have a blast at this house we found in Kingston for the weekend. I'm excited to go to the fair again and see old friends and squish some wool.

Prep for 20Books in Vegas. I'm going to the 20Booksto50k conference in Vegas in November and there's lots to do before then including going through the entire crazy schedule and choosing what I want to see and hear. I've gone through half the week already and I still have more to look at. The conference is HUGE.

Launch Pets in Space 8. This happens on Tuesday and there will be a corresponding newsletter the same day. I can't wait for you all to read Tilli's story! I'm also doing some Facebook ads for the book and I'm hoping they turn out great.

Stick with the Peloton. The usual. I'm concentrating on endurance rides and will continue to do this in October.

Keep going with Duolingo, reading, knitting, and TV. I hope to knit a little this month. We shall see!

That's it for this month! Have a great October everyone!
