A Writer’s Cover Letter

writer

To Whom It May Concern:

I would like to apply for the position of Writer. I believe my extensive experience being grumpy and introverted makes me an ideal fit for your company. My writing career began very early when I dyed my hair black and wrote atrocious poetry about moonlight. I have since moved on to social media, where I rant about improper use of grammar and share Benedict Cumberbatch videos.

You will find I have a very short temper. I sometimes sleep until 8:30 in the morning, just b...

How’d you like to spend A Night in with Audrey Hepburn?

24862545I admit: when I finished Lucy Holliday’s A Night in with Audrey Hepburn, I almost went berserk, at the time unaware that this was the first in a three-book series. I calmed down (some) when Lucy’s publicist informed me I would soon have the sequel in my impatient hands … but that still meant I had to wait, like, a whole month. When you love a series, a month HURTS, okay? And I do love the Libby Lomax Series.

Libby is a failed actress who likes submerging herself in the pretend world of classic...

Flesh-eating cacti attack slow-moving Phoenix residents!

evil-cactus

I’ve been in love with Stoneslide Corrective since they published my Pushcart Prize-nominated short story, “Don’t Ball the Boss,” what seems like a bazillion years ago. Ever hopeful, I entered their 2015 writing contest and was gleefully bewildered when my story, “The Saguaro Apocalypse” won “striking use of wit” (which allows me to walk up to strangers and say, “I’m officially funny,” because Stoneslide said so).

Their new issue came out yesterday, so head on over and read my completely rid...

Wolf Among Sheep teaser: Beware a husband’s wrath

WAS-banner-smoke

As I unlock my dingy apartment, I still taste her on my lips. I rush inside, don’t bother to lock up, and drink whisky from the bottle. I swallow and drink again, this time spitting onto the floor. What have I done? What have I done to a married woman?

The door opens behind me. Of course, he followed me from the hotel, and now, he means to kill me. Was that the game all along, to kill the man who tonguedhis wife? I deserve it—no time to atone. I think of all the offhand remarks with Chas, th...

A confession: I objectify men

deadpool

Jake and I went to see Deadpool this past weekend, partially because we like action films and partially because I think Ryan Reynolds is a stunning specimen of man beast. The movie was a blast: totally irreverent, sexy, and action-packed. I greatly enjoyed myself.

On the drive home from the theater, I texted some choice girlfriends to say Deadpool was surprisingly good and “Bonus: Naked Ryan Reynolds,” to which most replied “FULL FRONTAL?” in big, screaming letters. Alas, no, but I did see h...

Dead of Winter

6617790337_99925f664f_b

We’re in the death room. Waiting. She doesn’t respond. Her eyes don’t widen when I enter. The half of her face that still works doesn’t curve into a smile. No, almost gone now. Almost dead.

The sound of air down her throat rattles — in, out, in, out — like a robot that operates out of duty, habit, without any likelihood of waking one day. It won’t be long now.

The death room: an uncomfortable in-between place of waiting. We sit in plastic chairs nurses have set. Winter now, the bird feeders...
