In Liberty Ask

It’s easy to miss the forest for the trees. We know God is sovereign over everything. We know He does whatever he pleases. We know no man can thwart the will of God. We desperately want to know His will.

However, the majority of God’s sovereign will is a mystery to us. Our mind would be unable to comprehend the vast expansiveness of His will even if it were revealed. But when we make our

The Arrows of Grace

We easily forget that when the arrows of grace put the old man to death the marriage with our old master is annulled. We are no longer prostitutes bound to the body of sin (Rm 6:6). Our sins were always and will only ever be John’s disguised as abolitionists, a turn of phrase borrowed.

So if we are free in Christ, why do we return so easily to our sins?

Sin can seem comfortable. We know

Capital Punishment for Kids

It’s no secret that in the Old Testament many things were capital punishment that aren’t today. Often skeptics criticize the Old Testament for what constituted a capital crime. We read it with our modern sensibility and end up huffing, nose up and walking away. Now when I read the Old Testament, I’m amazed at its simplicity especially compared to our tangled, Mirkwood law in the Unites States.

How Should the Gospel Change the Church’s Celebrity Culture?

The Church’s Celebrity Culture

As a country, we love celebrities. Some people follow celebrities around for their job and snap pictures of them doing ordinary things. Did I say that’s their job? Crazy, right? You can’t check out at the grocery store without being slapped in the face with the latest celebrity gossip.

There’s undoubtedly a celebrity culture in today’s American church as well.

She’s Here! Adele Lila Kay Sims Has Arrived

This Advent season was particularly special for our home. We were not only celebrating the arrival of Jesus; we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of our own baby Adele Lila Kay. The experience gave me a new perspective while reading the birth narratives. Consider, for instance, the journey Joseph and Mary make from their home town of Nazareth to Bethlehem. The nervous, anticipation while they

Merry Christmas from the Sims Family

It’s been a great year for our family. Thank you for journeying with me this year--through the release of my first book, the birth of another child (by tomorrow at this time), and the every day struggles of life. Looking forwarding to writing more, getting to know more of you, and seeing what God has for us in 2014. SDG.

The Inconvenient Virgin by Lore Ferguson #AdventSeries13

I wake this morning to the sound of rain pounding on our back porch. I lay still and listen. I guess it’s fitting that the weather would be inclement today. It’s probably snowing at home. And I’m sure it’s icing in more places. Inconvenient to the holiday travelers.

This week I think about inconvenience.

Not the stuck in traffic or the grocery store is out of your cereal kind of

Jim Hamilton provides a great resource for Christians wanting to learn the how and why of biblical theology. One of the things he did that I loved is connect biblical theology to Christian living. For instance, he says
