Title: Driven (Book 1)

Author: Eve Silver

Publisher: Independent

Pages: 321

Genre: Scifi Romance

“Edgy, steamy, action packed, and plotted with nail-biting tension…”–Library Journal, Starred Review

In the harsh Northern Waste where human life is worth little, ice trucker Raina Bowen has learned to keep her eyes open and her knife close at hand. She’s spent her life on the run, one step ahead of the megalomaniac who hunts her. All she wants is to stay out of trouble and haul her load of grain to Gladow Station—but trouble finds her in the form of a sexy stranger called Wizard.

He has the trucking pass she needs, and she has to drag him out of a brawl with the very people she’s trying to hide from in order to get it. She may have rescued him, but Raina’s not foolish enough to see Wizard as anything close to helpless. He’s hard and honed and full of secrets—secrets that may destroy them both. As they race across the Waste, trying to outrun rival truckers, ice pirates, and the powerful man bent on their destruction, Raina’s forced to admit that trouble’s found her. And this time, there’s nowhere left to run.

“Anyone looking for something different will find [Silver]’s steamy, sinewy universe great fun…“–Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Eve [Silver] expertly fuses nonstop action and adventure; a cutting-edge, exceptionally inventive setting; and a terrific, take-charge, no-nonsense heroine in Driven, a fresh, fabulously fun futuristic romance.”–,The Chicago Tribune

“…kind of Mad Max meets Red Dawn…”–dearauthor.com

Raina and Wizard are back, racing across the Northern Waste to outrun ice pirates as they follow a distress call to an isolated community that just might hold the answers to the mystery of Wizard’s missing-and-presumed-dead, now-possibly-alive sister, Tatiana. But instead of answers, all they find are buried secrets and a truckload of trouble.

For those of you who’ve been missing the Northern Waste, FROZEN is a brand new novella that takes place between the events of DRIVEN and HIDDEN. It can be read as a stand-alone.

Warning: FROZEN includes non-stop action, Reavers, snowscooters, plasguns, frigid temperatures, rebels, a heroine who’s a blond tsunami with a backbone of pure steel, and a smart, hot hero who has a little difficulty with emotion.

Title: Hidden (Book 3)

Genre: Scifi Romance

“…[Silver] keeps bringing a fresh aspect to romance with strong worldbuilding and a poignant love story. It’s a true marriage of the themes of fantasy/science fiction and romance…”—DearAuthor.com

For most of her life Tatiana was imprisoned, tortured in the name of science, her DNA used to create a plague that could wipe out the entire population of the Northern Waste. But since her escape she’s no one’s victim. Not any more. She means to hunt down her tormentor, kill him, and destroy the plague he created. Nothing slows her down or distracts her from her mission. Until she encounters the mysterious Tristan who claims his goals match hers.

Enemy or ally, she has no way to know…but she does know better than to trust a smart and sexy stranger who’s alpha to the core. While her body aches for his touch, her mind recognizes that he’s a man with secrets and a hidden agenda of his own. She means to discover what he’s hiding, but first they’ll have to survive ice pirates, a lethal plague, and being trapped in an underground lab, running like rats in a maze from a deadly threat unleashed by a madman.

“[Silver]’s name is fast becoming synonymous with high-octane, gritty adventure…What immediately elevates these books, besides great plotting and worldbuilding, is the depth and texture of her characters. This is a perfect action romance!”RT BOOKreviews

Excerpt from DRIVEN:

The air was stale, rank with the stink of smoke, sweat, and old beer. Bob’s Truck Stop. Nice place for a meal.

Raina Bowen sat at a small table, back to the wall, posture deceptively relaxed. Inside, she was coiled tighter than the Merckle shocks that were installed in her rig, but it was better to appear unruffled. Never let ’em see you sweat. That had been one of Sam’s many mottos.

She glanced around the crowded room, mentally cataloging the Siberian gun truckers at the counter, the cadaverous pimp in the corner and his ferret-faced companion, the harried waitress who deftly dodged the questing hand that reached out to snag her as she passed. In the center of the room was a small raised platform with a metal pole extending to the grime-darkened ceiling. A scantily clad girl, barely out of puberty, wiggled and twirled around the pole. Raina looked away. But for a single desperate act, one that had earned her freedom, she might have been that girl.

Idly spinning the same half-empty glass of warm beer that she’d been nursing for the past hour, she looked through the grimy windows at the front of the truck stop. Frozen, colorless, the bleak expanse stretched with endless monotony until the high-powered floodlights tapered off and the landscape was swallowed by the black night sky.

A balmy minus-thirty outside. And it would only get colder the farther north they went. Raina had a keen dislike of the cold, but if she were the first to reach Gladow Station with her load of genetically engineered grain, there’d be a fat bonus of fifty million interdollars. That’d be more than enough to warm her to the cockles of her frozen heart.

More than enough to buy Beth’s safety.

Keeping her gaze on the door, Raina willed it to open. She couldn’t wait much longer. Where the hell was Wizard? Sitting here—a woman alone in a place like this—drew too much attention. She wanted no one to remember her face. Anonymity was a precious commodity, one she realized had slipped through her fingers as from the corner of her eye she watched one of the Siberians begin to weave drunkenly across the room.

“Well, hello, sweet thing.” He stopped directly in front of her, kicked the extra chair out from the table, and shifted it closer before dropping his bulk onto the torn Naugahyde. He was shrouded in layers of tattered cloth that were stained and frayed, the stink of him hitting her nostrils before he finished his greeting.

“Leave. Now.” Keeping her voice low and even, Raina snaked one hand along her waist toward the small of her back, resting her fingers on the smooth handle of her knife.

The Siberian smiled at her, revealing the brown stubs of three rotting teeth. “You can’t chase me off so easy. I’ve been watching you.” He gestured at the front of his pants. “You need a man, sweet thing.”

Uh-huh. “And you think you’re a man?”

The trucker frowned at her question; then his thick brows shot up as he realized he’d been insulted. Undeterred, he leaned forward, catching her ponytail with one scarred and dirty hand. “I’ll show you how much man I am. Give us a kiss, sweet thing.”

His tongue was already out and reaching as he pulled her face closer to his.

“Last warning,” Raina said softly, wishing he would listen.

He gave a hard tug on her ponytail. Raina slid her knife from its sheath, bringing it up with a sharp twist, neatly slicing through the tip of the trucker’s tongue. Blood splattered in all directions, thick and hot. With an enraged howl he jerked back, letting loose his hold on her as he clapped both hands over his mouth. Dark blood dripped down his unshaven chin to pool on the tabletop.

Raina sent a quick look at the rest of the Siberians. Their attention was firmly fixed on the girl who was shimmying up and down the pole. Returning her gaze to the moaning trucker, she picked up the stained scrap of cloth that passed for a serviette and slowly wiped her blade clean. She knew that once serviettes had been made of paper, but that was a long time ago, when there had still been enough trees to provide pulp.

“Name’s Raina Bowen. Not sweet thing.” She sighed. So much for anonymity. “And the last thing I need is a man.”

Things I had to learn by doing #amwriting #WriterWednesday

There are a gazillion rules about writing. I quick search on the internet will cause your eyes to glaze over and your heart to fall. Trust me, I’ve tried it. And that’s not even including the grammar rules. *Shakes head at the sheer number of grammar rules that contradict themselves* I’ll be totally honest here. I thought I knew how to write when I started publishing. Yeah, I was naïve. Sure, I understood the basics, but there’s one thing about novel writing I didn’t understand before I started churning out books. Not at all. There are some writing rules you have to learn by doing. I understand all about having to learn to shoot a weapon by shooting a weapon and not just watching a YouTube video. But writing? Nah. That I can just study and then go out and do it. *Snorts*

Show not tell. Go ahead and roll your eyes. I do every single time I hear this criticism. Duh! I know to show and not tell. It’s like the number one rule for writers. Turns out I was wrong. The more I write the more I realize how exactly I’ve been telling and not showing. It’s freaking hard. It’s way easier to just tell, which makes telling oh so tempting. And once you get into the rhythm of telling, it’s hard to get out of it. This is where good editing (both your own and by a professional) comes in. Swallow your pride and listen to reviewers, beta readers, and editors. Most importantly, just keep practicing.
Dialogue Tags. This one pisses me off. I get a lot of comments about my dialogue tags. But I don’t use ‘he said’ ‘she said’! I may shout that while stomping my foot. How in the heck can you tell who’s talking if you don’t use tags? My books (especially my cozy mysteries) tend to be full of groups of troublemakers women. I need to use the dialogue tags so the readers don’t get confused about who’s talking, don’t I? Um, no. Turns out you don’t.
How to tell a joke. I know how to tell a joke. At a party, that is. In a book, making a reader laugh is a totally different expertise. To be honest, I didn’t learn this from practicing so much as from reading supposedly funny books that were simply not funny. The best way to practice this is to read out loud. Sure, you sound like a total idiot, but better to sound like an idiot for a couple days of editing than have a book flop.

So, keep writing folks. You’re only getting better

Excerpt:

As Liz lay awake in the early hours, she thought of how Viktor had insisted on having sex. Although she had hated every moment she wondered if she had shown too much of an interest tonight. Would he suspect something was different on this occasion?

Viktor seemed to have fallen asleep quickly in the darkness, but Liz had not. As she listened to the autumn rain pattering against the bedroom window, she remembered Sue’s words urging her to come back to the Women’s Refuge if he was violent again.   Liz was bruised from the previous night. She must go now if she wanted to be safe. This was her last chance for a new life.

Viktor’s foot was over her ankle so she would have to slide her leg away very carefully.

She inched away from him, then froze and listened. He was a light sleeper, and his breathing was usually responsive to any slight movement of hers. But the rhythm did not change.

She reached the edge of the bed and gradually sat up. Once her feet touched the floor, she eased herself up so that there would be no sound from the mattress springs.

She crept round the bed in the dark, guessing its dimensions and pausing after each step to check Viktor’s breathing.

Then slowly she slowly opened the bedroom door and quietly closed it behind her.

Liz tiptoed down the stairs in the dark.

When she reached the hall, she opened the cupboard under the stairs and carefully lifted the lid of the fuse box. There was just enough light to count along the switches to the one that controlled the outside security light. She flicked it to the off position. There was a quiet snap as she closed the fuse box. She waited to hear if there was any sound from upstairs. None.

Liz’s heart pounded as she moved across the kitchen, picked up her small rucksack, then turned the key in the back door as slowly as she could. After what seemed like an eternity, she stepped over the threshold. Carefully and silently, she closed the door behind her.

The security light did not come on.

She hurried out into the damp September night, across the wet lawn, avoiding the gravel path, towards her car parked halfway up the street.

The rain ran down her face and into her eyes as she desperately rummaged in her rucksack. There wasn’t much there. Just a change of clothes, bankcards, a little cash and her passport.

‘Please, God, no!’ Liz gasped as it came to dawn on her. For all her planning, in the anxiety of her bid for freedom, she had forgotten to pick up the car key from its usual place on the kitchen shelf.

Now she must face the unthinkable:  to go back inside that house. She hesitated. She shivered at the thought. Finally, she brushed the wet hair from her eyes and steeled herself.

Looking up at the windows, she gave a sigh of relief when she saw no light had come on. She approached the back door, retracing her steps over the small garden lawn. Her shoes squelched in the rain-soaked grass.

She waited outside, listening for any noise before putting the key in the lock.

Liz hardly dared to breathe as she opened the door. The kitchen was pitch black. She felt her way round using the familiar work surfaces as a guide, and then stretched her hand up to the shelf to feel for the car key. It was not there!

She thought she heard a noise, a creak, so she froze and waited. But there was nothing further. The antique Russian wooden furniture that they had collected clicked as it cooled at night in this old house, particularly the sideboard in the hall. She’d heard it lots of times when she had been trying to get to sleep.

Then there was another noise, a bit like the furniture click, but louder and nearer, not from the direction of the hall. It came from behind her.

Book Excerpt:

The Shadows in Our Past by Denyse Bridger

“I wanted a father, and I got Jonas Wilkes. I needed to trust him, and he made me feel…” She shuddered, visibly changed her train of thought. “Then I met you; Gold

Ridge’s most respected citizen. I’d never met anyone quite like you, David Logan. You were handsome, sophisticated, powerful… What was it Margaret called you? A charming outlaw.” She smiled. “She was right, that’s exactly what you are. But you took my breath away the moment I saw you. I will never forget that day, or turning around to see you on the stairs of the
Nugget , all elegance and danger. You terrified me, and you excited me. I felt things in those first seconds that I have never felt before. My God, David, I think I fell in love with you before you even spoke to me.”

“You do know how to flatter me, Hannah,” he whispered.

“But it’s not  flattery, David. Every time you walk into a room, you make my heart feel like  it’s going to burst with the love that fills me. I can’t believe you’re my  husband. That you chose to give me that much of your life.”

She smiled, tilted her head to one side, whimsical yet more serious than he’d ever seen her.

“Finish, Hannah,” he requested. “I want to know what you’re feeling.”

“Do you remember the first time you kissed me?”

He nodded.

“I would have behaved like a common whore for you that day, and it frightened me to death, David. I was with a fine, Southern gentleman. A man well-bred, respected, all

the things that a lady wants. And instead of being a lady, I was ready toÄ”

His laughter stopped her abruptly.

“You do yourself a great disservice, Mrs. Logan,” he teased tenderly. “Any gentleman is still susceptible to the charms of a lovely woman. And you do take away my sense of propriety, Hannah.”

“The first time you made love to me, I was certain that God had put me on this earth to belong to you, David. You gave me everything that my heart had ever wanted, even the things I didn’t let myself hope for. I felt safe, and whole, at peace. Every  time you touch me, I feel that way. Beautiful… complete…”

“Then why are you so afraid, Hannah?”

“I don’t want to be,” she said fiercely. “I hate it, David! I despise myself for feeling like this. ButÄ”

“But?” he coaxed gently.

Elizabeth was right,” she put her fingers to his mouth when he would have objected instantly. “She was right about some things, David. I’ll never know you the way Ellen did. I’m not from the same world. Your Southern honor is one of the things I love most about you, but it’s a mystery  to me, too. You were married and fighting in a war when I was little more than a baby at my mother’s breast. Your soul was scarred in ways that I can only imagine.” Tears flooded her eyes as she stared up at him. “David, the sun in my  world rises and sets in your eyes.” She gulped in a sharp breath. “I’ve never needed anyone that much, and it frightens me.”

David nodded, lifted her hands to his lips again as he kissed the fingers that shook within his light grasp; then he looked intently at her.

“Will you listen to me now?”

“Of course,” she replied, voice thick with emotion. She watched as he rose, took the other chair on the balcony, and set it directly in front of her. Then he sat and took

her hands again.

Top 5 Mistakes Authors Make When Requesting a #bookreview #amwriting #amreading #MondayBlogs

Welcome 2017! Just before the New Year, I wrote about my year in review. You kind of have to, don’t ya? I tried to make that blog as upbeat as possible. Not everything is upbeat, however, because now I’m going to talk about five mistakes authors make when asking for a book review. I’ve written other blogs about this, but I keep seeing the same – dare I say stupid? – mistakes over and over again. These five mistakes drive me bananas! So, without further ado, here we go:

Using a private e-mail address with a cute name. My personal favorite? You and your partner’s name joined with the word love. This doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it is. Because it’s not professional. Indie authors get enough flak about our lack of professionalism. There’s no need to make it easy for the haters.
Using an e-mail address which is directly related to one of your books. This also doesn’t seem like a problem. If you’re only planning on writing one book, it isn’t. But if you are going to write more books? Houston – we have a problem. You’ll have to start over with gathering e-mail addresses. Reviewers and bloggers will be confused about who you are. Your e-mails from your new address may in fact go into their trash boxes because this is not the e-mail address they have on file. You’ll have to rebuild relationships. Marketing a book is hard enough without adding unnecessary work.
Reacting badly to friendly criticism. When I first started getting review requests, I’d often give the writer a few tips. For example, if there were typos in the e-mail, I’d say something like “I don’t know if you noticed, but…” Sounds friendly enough, right? Um, no. The vast majority of responses I got were nasty. Who do you think you are? They ranted. I can tell you what I’m not – a reviewer of your book! I no longer point these things out to writers. I simply hit delete on any e-mail that contains more than 3 typos.
Reacting badly to no. This one pisses me off. I’ve actually taken the time to read your e-mail and respond to it. Trust me, that doesn’t always happen. And then the writer has the gall to write to me that I should reconsider or that it’s my loss. Really? You’ve just been put on my never gonna read list.
And my top pet peeve about review requests – general emails. If you can’t bother to figure out my name (hint: it’s in the e-mail address), I’m not bothering to read your request. Delete. And if the request is super long with no hint that you have no freaking clue what I like to read or who I am, forget about it. Delete.

I could go on and on, but I promised to list only my top five. How about you? What are your top pet peeves with review requests?

Time was of the essence. Sera burst out of her room and into the hallway and raced down the long corridor. As she reached the winding stairs, she opened her mouth to scream that she was coming for Damon. But before she could say anything, a booming crack silenced her. It bellowed loudly.

The noise stopped her in her tracks. She had no idea where the sound had come from. Dazed, she froze in her steps and looked around, trying to identify its source. What was that? Her blood pumped fast through her system. When she took her next step, an excruciating and undeniable agony came over her. She had been attacked.

Stars swirled and danced in her vision. Everything dimmed.  The back of her head throbbed. The pain pounded in her skull, making a ba-boom sound over and over again. Without further warning, her body gave way, and she dropped fast to the hard floor. As she fell and desperately tried to right herself, she spun on the perfect angle to see the reason for her unfortunate circumstance. He loomed over her, poised for a further assault.

Her attacker was a dark, blurry figure. He watched her collapse with his small beady eyes glaring at her from the holes in his black mask. While the hunter’s face was obscured, his smile gleamed brightly in the dimly lit house. Sera could have sworn she heard laughter. It was a note higher than she anticipated. She noticed the hunter’s right arm; he was positioned ready to strike. He wielded a giant baseball bat, which had just connected with her head.

“What the…?” Sera’s rage metamorphosed into energy, thrusting through her like a roaring and violent storm. It readied her body to respond to her attacker.

The hunter pulled his arm back slowly until it was raised high above his head. He paused, a cocky move, meant to intimidate her.

Unwilling to fall victim to the masked assailant, Sera summoned her supernatural strength once again and pushed herself off the floor to face him. In a flash, he twisted his body and swung the bat toward her. Sera hesitated a beat too long, just enough for the demon hunter to get his wish.

She had been mere inches away from an upright stance, when the bat, in full swing, connected with her cheekbone. The impact sent Sera careening backward until she slammed up against a wall.

For seconds she teetered on the edge of the top stair.  Finally, she lost her battle with her balance and slid off the wall. To save herself, she took a leap, high into the air. But nonetheless, her body tumbled and crashed down the steps of the grand staircase.

The fall felt as if it lasted for minutes, but only seconds had passed. Conscious as she experienced her soar through the air, her body twisted and turned as it made its way to the bottom of the stairs. Without warning, her head smashed violently onto the marble foyer entrance. Everything faded to black.

Year in Review #2016Recap #amwriting #expatlife

Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve, which means it is now time for the obligatory Year in Review blog. It’s hard to keep it light considering what a complete b*tch 2016 was (and my fervent advocacy for keeping my writing platform politic-free), but I’ll do my best.

I will remember 2016 as:

The year I published four (!!!) books:

ntascb
byobcv
self-serve-murder_cover
mmacover

The year I moved back to The Netherlands and realized eyeballing measurements is not the best idea in the world (thus having a piano in my doorway for a month).

The year I added two countries (Argentina and Uruguay) to my places visited bringing my total of the world visited up to 27%.

The year I screwed up my visa situation in Turkey and ended up spending three weeks floating around the US, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The year I woke to small arms fire and jets flying overhead and realized I hadn’t traveled back in time to when I was in the military but this was a military coup attempt. Now I can scratch ‘military coup’ off my bucket list.

The year I realized my desire to live in a historically significant time period was completely bonkers as the world has gone mad and it feels like there’s nothing to be done about it. So much for that hero complex.

And – to end on a good note – the year I won my first prize as a writer!

#Bookreview of More by @SierraKincade #romanticsuspense

~ Synopsis ~

Amy has kept her distance from men after her sleazy ex took everything from her—everything but her daughter, Paisley, whom Amy would do anything to protect. She’s learned to keep her guard up, but it’s getting harder and harder to do around a man like Mike, whose penetrating gaze leaves her speechless. Mike is unlike any man Amy has ever met. He’s patient, kind, a loving father, ripped, and, amazingly, seeming way into her. Still, Amy makes it clear that she has no intention of the two of them being more than friends. But when threats from her past put Paisley in danger, Amy finds that more with Mike just might save her life…and her heart.

~ My Review ~

Although More is a standalone, it is part of The Body Works trilogy. I haven’t read any of the other books in the trilogy, but it wasn’t an issue. Everything a reader needed to know about Amy’s past was worked into the narrative of this story. More is a slow starter. So much so that I’m afraid I would have put it aside had I not agreed to write this review. I’m glad I stuck with it. The suspense built ever so slowly until it nearly exploded at the end.

The romance crept slowly forward as well. Amy and Mike were nearly teenagers with their slow re-discovery of love making. I didn’t know whether I should remind them that they have children and surely know how to get it on or just giggle at their slow progress. In the end, it was just what the characters needed to repair the wounds in their hearts.

I didn’t connect with Amy much. She’s into all the things I couldn’t care less about: hair and fashion. Normally, I get annoyed when writers take up time to describe outfits in detail. I’ll give Kincade a pass, though, as Amy’s outfits were an essential part of her personality. Now, Mike, Mike I’d love to connect with. He almost seemed too good to be true. Almost. He shows he’s a real person, though, with flaws and all, which just made me fall for the man even more.

There were a few comical moments (porn, anyone?) that made me giggle. I would have loved to see more of these funny happenings.

Although More was a bit slow and somewhat on the too many pages’ side for my liking, I did enjoy the story and I’m glad I stuck with it.
