Description/Blurb:

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

My Thoughts:

Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have had this book sitting on my bookshelf, as it were, and wanted to read it for a while. My plan was to read the book before going to see the movie, but life had other plans and I didn’t get a chance to do so.

When Amazon and Barnes and Noble put the eBook on sale for 2.99, I decided it was time to dig into it and get it read.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to having seen the movie first. I had some preconceived notions and ideas about the characters and the storyline, and some of those did not become reconciled in my mind. But I will make every effort to not let that cloud my feelings about the book. After all, it is not the fault of the novel that Hollywood takes creative license, now, is it?

I found the characters enthralling. I loved Rose and Lissa, and I hatred Mia with a pure passion. Dimitri, well, I like the book version better.

the sorry flowed and the characters felt very real to me. I almost felt sorry for Natalie. She wanted so badly to belong and to be loved. But such emotion will always get us into trouble, doesn’t it?

While I enjoyed the book, there were wire a few poorly edited bits, and that always has an effect on how I view a book. My inner editor cringed quite a few times. There were points where I had to stop reading and try to figure out what the missing word was, and anything that distracts from the story will sadly lower my rating.

Nonetheless, I do look forward to setting what the Academy has in store.

2014 Book Blogger Summer Reading Program

This one is hosted by Katie’s Book Blog

I thought it was an awesome Idea, so I thought I would go ahead and sign up.  Remember summer reading programs when you were in school?  This is similar, and sounds like a lot of fun.  I am starting about 2 weeks late, and so I had to really think about my goals.  This coincides with the Clean Sweep ARC Challenge and the Netgalley Wellness Challenge, so most of the books I list in my goals list will be ARCs.

I want to try to read at least 15 books.

Some of the ones I want to read are:

The One by Kiera Cass
Pushing The Limits by Katie McGarry
Delusion by Laura Sullivan
The Counterfeit Family Tree of Vee Crawford-Wong by Tam Holland
The Elementals by Frances Lia Block
Cold Light by Jenn Ashworth
Tara Duncan and the Forbidden Book by Hrh Princess Sophie Audouin-Mamikonian
One Plus One Equals Blue by MJ Auch
Prep School Confidential by Kara Taylor
Lullaby by Amanda Hocking
Tidal by Amanda Hocking
Elegy by Amanda Hocking.
These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman
Frostbite by Richelle Mead
And All The Stars by Andrea K Host.

I may edit the specific books and add to this along the way, but I think this gives me a good starting point, anyway.  These are listed in no particular order.  If you come back to this post and a title is hyperlinked, it means the review is posted.

Are you participating in this also?  Link me and I will check it out and cheer you on as well!

Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Title:   Throne of Glass

Author:  Sarah J. Maas

Publisher:  Bloomsbury USA Children’s

Publication Date:  August 7, 2012

Page Count:  432

Where I got it:  Library

Where you can get it: Amazon

How much: List Price 9.99

Format I read it in: Ebook

Description/Blurb:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her… but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

My Thoughts:

Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I picked this one up as an ebook from the library. I had seen so many raving reviews that I needed to see what all of the hype was about. I was not disappointed.

Often when a book is met with such profound adoration, I find myself feeling like I have been let down, because I cannot see what all of the rave and rapture is about. But in the case of Throne of Glass, I found a riveting story that kept me glued to the page long after I should have moved on to other activities that were more pressing.

It is the mark of a great story that has me neglecting other things that need to be done in order to find out what is next for the hero or heroine. And this was the case when it came to Celaena.

To be a young girl imprisoned for how you had made a living, and to have survived the unsurvivable, I felt myself so drawn into the character of Celaena that I had a hard time separating myself from the story when I set my reader down for the night. Dorian, the ever-present playboy that seems to be a requisite in young adult fiction these days, reminds me of so many teenage boys that I have encountered in my lifetime. Nehemia, the best friend with a secret, but with a heart of gold. Then, of course, there is Chaol, the stoic guard who I get the feeling has a much bigger story to tell some day.

I find myself having difficulty returning to work now without immediately beginning on the sequel. Throne of Glass is well written with characters that are both easy to relate to and riveting enough to keep you guessing. It is well written, well edited and exciting. I cannot wait to see what more is in store for me!

Bout of Books 10 Starting Line: Goals and Updates #boutofbooks

Bout of Books

Time Devoted to Reading
So, Bout of Books coincides with the Clean Sweep ARC challenge.  My goal is to get as much done as possible and get a big dent made in the pile.  I am also participating in the Netgalley Wellness Challenge again this year.  So, in short, pretty much everything I read this Bout of Books Will be a review book.  I am trying to get my TBR under control, after all.  So, I would like to try to spend at least 3 hours a day reading, since my kids are all in school this time around.

Pages
So I have never set a page goal before, but I would like to try to read at LEAST 200 pages a day, with a total of 1500 for the entire readathon.

Books
I am not going to give a list of books this time around.  I have listed books previously and I always shoot myself in the foot doing that, so I am skipping that this time around, but I want to read at least 5 books this week.

Challenges
I want to try to get at least 5 challenges this time.  Do you think I can do it?

Visiting
I want to visit at least 3-5 new to me sites each day and comment and work on my networking a bit.  I use this goal every time, and I hope to continue it.  I love meeting new blogs.

Social
I want to spend at least an hour chatting on Twitter each day and I want to make sure to make at least 1 or 2 Twitter chats.  My favorite part of these readathons is getting to interact with other people and talking and making new friends.

I will post my updates each day.  I have not decided if I will just update on this one or do a separate post each day.  I have done it both ways in the past and I am not sure which I like better.  We will see how it goes.

Are you participating in Bout of Books 10?  Link me to your goals so I can cheer you on as well.

Then of course, there was the informal challenge to introduce ourselves and show us getting our read on.  Here was the picture I posted out on twitter.   Photo_00117

Recap
So, I did not get as much read as I would have liked, but I committed epic amounts of visiting and twittering, so that counts for something.  I am really enjoying my current read so far, and I cannot wait to finish this book and see how the rest of the story goes.

TUESDAY

Pages Read:  180 pages.
Books:  One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Walker (still not finished)
Books Finished:  None so far.
Social:  I spent far too much time on Twitter.  Probably about 3 hours, but I made connections with people.  Thats the point of this exercise.  I also attended the Live Q&A.  And now, thanks to Amanda, I signed up for Storify.  Because I needed another Time Sucking activity.
Visiting:  I visited and commented on the following blogs:
Mylifeinbooks.Wordpress.com
Challenges:  I didn’t do either of today’s challenges.  I just couldn’t wrap my head around them.  Tomorrow will be better.

Recap:  I fell short on some of my goals, but I was much closer to my daily page total.  I hould finish my book tonight, in the wee hours, and then to decide what will come next.  I really need to read some review books and get caught up on those.  We shall see what the time brings me.

WEDNESDAY

Pages Read Today:  228 pages.
Total Pages Read:  542
Books:
One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Walker

Books Finished:

One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Walker
Dragons & Dreams:  Bedtime Stories by Becca Price
The Girl Who Played Chess With an Angel by Tessa Apa

Social:  I spent far too much time on Twitter.  I participated in both the Bout of Books Chat, but I also participated in the Clean Sweep ARC Challenge chat.  I was saddened to learn Twitter jail can no longer be my goal, as Twitter has made that impossible by upping the tweet limits…  Phooey on them!  I also spent lots of time chatting and networking and getting to know some awesome bloggers.  Learned about Literally and I am awaiting my invite code.

Visiting:  I visited and commented on 5 blogs, but I forgot to write them down so I could log them here…  Sorry for the lack of shout outs today, folks.

Challenges:  I actually did today’s book pairing challenge, pairing up Maze Runner and The Lord of the Flies.  I will edit this later to include my twitter link, I am sleepy!

Recap:
I actually did really well today and hit my daily total.  Still a little behind on my overall total pages, but I should be able to catch up.  I decided I should focus on reading my shortest books on my netgalley goodreads shelf first and work my way up to get my percentage improved there, since I am also doing Cleansweep and the Netgalley Wellness Challenge right now.  I am really pleased with my progress today.  Thanks to my book sprint friends, because I couldn’t have done it without you.

The Special Needs Parent Handbook: Critical Strategies and Practical Advice to Help You Survive and Thrive

The Special Needs Parent Handbook: Critical Strategies and Practical Advice to Help You Survive and Thrive by Jonathan L. Singer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book provided some invaluable information on how to talk to others, how to access resources et cetera, but it just was not what I was looking for or expecting, exactly.

I am the parent of a young child on the autism spectrum. while there were amazingly helpful tips on advocacy, at the sa,me time those were also vague. Half of the book was dedicated to sample chapters of the authors other books. Honestly, I was glad I had borrowed this book and had not spent the money on it. while the proceeds go to charity, it is a charity the author runs. I was just expecting more from the book than what I got.

It’s Almost Time!! Bout of Books 10.0 #boutofbooks

Bout of Books

Do you know what time it is?  That’s right.  Less than 12 days until Bout of Books starts!  Bout of Books is one of my favorite events because it lets me get to know other bloggers and others who are as obsessed with reading as I am.  Oh, and there are fun challenges and stuff.  And, tons and tons of READING!

In case you don’t know what it is all about, Bout of Books says on their site:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 12th and runs through Sunday, May 18th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 10 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

Sounds like awesomeness, right?  That’s what I said too!  As the event gets closer, I will put up a goals post and all that fun stuff, but this is me officially signing up and committing to participate.  Are you participating too?  Let me know so I can check out your blog as well!

Clean Sweep ARC Challenge!!!!! Startup and Goals Post #CleansweepARC

Clean Sweep ARC Challenge May 2014

Okay, so I know I have been fairly quiet lately and my posting quantity has not been where it ought to be.  But now, I am diving into this challenge in the hopes that I can get myself back on track and get a dent made in this massive pile of reading that is awaiting me.  I have quite (read, I have an addiction) books hanging in my Netgalley queue waiting to be read, in addition to a large number of books from publishers that I have allowed myself to get behind on.  I plan to get that under control this month and get a fair number of these read and reviews at least drafted up to be able to just schedule the posts.

This hosted by the Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Angela’s Anxious Life

The rules are as follows (copied from the Caffeinated Book Reviewer’s post):

Challenge Schedule and entry form will post on May 1st and participant giveaway will close on June 3 at 11:59 (CST)

My goals:

I am not going to list specific books because that always bites me in the butt!  But I want to get at least 10 review books read this month.  I am also going to be participating in Bout of Books this month, so that should also allow me to get my goal met this month.  If I see that I am approaching my goal fairly early on, I will increase my goals or post an updated goals list as time progresses.

Will you be participating in this challenge as well?  Comment and let me know so I can check out your goals!

Review: Better Than Chocolate by Sheila Roberts

Title:  Better Than Chocolate

Author:  Sheila Roberts

Publisher: Harlequin MIRA

Publication Date: September 25, 2012

Page Count: 378

Where I got it:  Publisher

Where you can get it: Amazon

How much: List Price 7.99

Format I read it in:  Paperback

Description/Blurb:

Sweet Dreams Chocolate Company has been in the Sterling family for generations, ever since Great-Grandma Rose literally dreamed up her first fabulous recipe. But now it looks as if they’re about to lose Sweet Dreams to the bank—and that would be a disaster, not only for the family but for the town of Icicle Falls, Washington. Can Samantha, the oldest daughter and new head of the company, come up with a way to save it?After Samantha does some brainstorming with her mother and sisters, inspiration strikes. They’ll have a chocolate festival! Time’s running out, but the Sterling women are determined and the town’s behind them, so everything’s bound to go smoothly….

Or not. Events seem to be conspiring against Samantha, and her mother’s attempts to help aren’t helping. To make matters worse, the fate of her company is in the hands of her archenemy, Blake Preston, the bank manager with the football-hero good looks. It’s enough to drive her to chocolate. But Blake’s also enough to convince her that (believe it or not) there’s something even better than chocolate.

My Thoughts:

Better Than Chocolate

Better Than Chocolate by Sheila Roberts

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I received this book as a part of the Tell Harlequin panel. I have received other books as a part of that program that I have absolutely adored, so I was incredibly hopeful for this one. Couple that with the fact that I had other friends with similar book tastes to me tell me they had heard amazing things about this author, and I thought for sure this was going to be another hit that would melt my cynical heart. Unfortunately, I just don’t feel that it lived up to the hype.

I have sat here reading other reviews and wondering if I was reading the same book, because there were a lot of people according to Amazon and Goodreads that really enjoyed this one. I just was not one of them.

Firstly, there was a lot of filler in the story – bits and pieces that had no bearing on the outcome and were just there to fill up space. I really dislike filler. A good author can paint a picture without so much extra detail that is unrelated to the main plot. I get sub plots and all, but this was not even subplot, it was just, extra.

There were some editing errors that should have been obvious and corrected before this went to print, and yet they weren’t and that is always a big sticking point for me.

And then, this was a romance, right? Because the romantic relationship coming to be happened in the last 15 pages or so and felt rushed and like it was there just because people would expect it to be. I mean, seriously, a check, a kiss, a hike, an engagement? Where are the details about the relationship developing and building. I felt like a couple chapters were missing from my book, but the page numbers matched up so I know that was not the case.

I am sure Ms. Roberts is a gifted writer, at least in the minds of some readers, but after reading this one, I don’t think that I will be able to read another book by this author. It took me more than a month to finish this one, and I read books of this length usually in a much shorter period of time. I felt I had to make myself keep reading. The premise was great, and this could have been an awesome book. I just felt like there was too much gritty detail, and not enough meat.

My Thoughts:

The Shadow Throne

The Shadow Throne by Jennifer A. Nielsen

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This title was long anticipated, so as soon as I saw it was coming, I quickly got in touch with my contact at Scholastic and they graciously sent me an advanced copy.

I fell in love with the boy known only as Sage in the first book, and when I found out his history and what his destiny was to be, I was excited and floored all at the same time.

Though I disliked Roden in the beginning, he grew on me as the series continued. I loved him in this book.

I usually have to make myself ignore editing in ARCs, but there was nothing to ignore in this one. This was beautifully written and edited and was such a compelling story. While I was in a hurry to get it, I was so sad to see it end. I have fallen in love with these characters over the last year and am very saddened to say goodbye to them. It is like that with any series, but perhaps more so with this one, since I felt so invested in the story since I waited so long for the last book.

I think this author has a lot of great things to offer the young adult literary field and I cannot wait to see what more she has to come.
