My Thoughts:
Ethan’s Story; My Life With Autism by Ethan Rice
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I am the mom of a 3 year old on the autism spectrum. so when I heard about this children’s book written by an autistic child about living with autism, I had to pick it up and read it to my child, as well as my older children.
I am impressed with the fact that this young man is so willing to share his story so that purple will better understand autism. Reality is that autism is not widely understood. this story is well written and beautifully illustrated. I think this is one that all parents should share with their child.

Description/Blurb:
Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse-Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends — one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena — Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.
My Thoughts:
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
3-1/2 stars
For anyone who has read the book and seen the movie, you will realize that there are many, many differences between the two. Let’s start with the most glaring. In the movie, Percy is a teenager, high school age-ish. In the book, he is 12. Now, for some, this difference would be disturbing. For me, I don’t know, the way some of the events play out seems to work better with him being younger. The writing plays to the younger demographic well, and with the middle grade set being the target audience, it is well written.
In the final chapters I noticed two fairly glaring editing errors, with the omission of a word, in one case “and” that made the flow stutter a little, hence the rating. But beyond that, the story is well written, fun and engaging. I am far from the target demographic, and I read the book in under 36 hours, with probably 3 or so hours of reading time, according to my Kindle app.
I found the characters believable and enjoyable. I wish there had been a little more descriptiveness of the boundary between camp and the mortal world, or of camp itself, of Cabin Three, et cetera, but otherwise, I enjoyed the story and I think most of my fantasy-reading readers will as well.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth retells a pivotal Divergent scene (chapter 13) from Tobias’s point of view. This thirteen-page scene reveals unknown facts and fascinating details about Four’s character, his past, his own initiation, and his thoughts about new Dauntless initiate Tris Prior.
My Thoughts:
Free Four: Tobias Tells the Story by Veronica Roth
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I read this after having read the entire series. I really enjoyed this little glimpse into Tobias’ perspective on things. While we get bits and pieces of his point of view throughout the main series, I am always fascinated when I see different bits told from another character’s point of view. I can see how this might have been a great little read for those waiting for the conclusion of the trilogy to come along and I wish I had read it sooner.

Elena: the girl who can have anyone finds herself in the middle of a love triangle . . . one that might turn deadly.
My Thoughts:
The Struggle by L.J. Smith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This author has a gift when it comes to cliffhanger endings, that is for sure. This is the second installment in the series and the second cliffhanger.
As an observation, this is not a series of books that can be read out of order. Having not read them in order would leave a reader confused and missing too many pieces of the puzzle.
The mystery that is Damon just grows more and more as this story progresses. He has yet to display a single redeeming quality and so far I just really do not like him.
I am amazed at the differences in the abilities that the vampires have when comparing the book to the television show. The crow thing just gives me chills and almost makes me shiver every time I see a black bird.
There are a few editing mishaps one would not expect in a traditionally published book, but not so many as to make it unreadable.
Overall, this is another quick read and a page-turner. I cannot wait to see what is next for these characters.

Just Another Rabid Reader Interviews Amanda Mahan, Author of Heiress, P.I.
Recently, I posted a review of Heiress, P.I., by Amanda Mahan. You can find that review here
I had a chance to catch up with Amanda and get to know here a little better. She has agreed to share some about herself with my readers here, so without further adieu, the interview! Oh, and don’t forget to enter the giveaway.
a Rafflecopter giveaway
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I grew up in Florida but now live in California, and I feel like a blend of the two with a little bit of New York (where I was born) thrown in. I used to blame my unruly hair on Florida humidity but then it doesn’t behave in California either (or New York for that matter) — so I’m starting to think it’s just me.
I make a mean red velvet cupcake. I have several “in my next life” fantasy careers; one is a pastry chef and the other is a private investigator. I love baking and snooping, so that makes sense.
2. What do you do when you’re not writing?
Baking and snooping!
And I also take care of my 6 year-old daughter and nearly 2 year-old son. And work full time. It’s busy, but fun. Usually.
3. Who influenced you to write?
My 10th grade English teacher Elfie Israel always told me I should be a writer. And then after I graduated, she would sometimes run into my mom around town and say, “Is Amanda writing? She should be!” So that felt really good to hear and know that someone who wasn’t related to me believed in me. Sadly she died last year so I never got to tell her about the book or how much that meant.
4. What was your journey to publication?
I wrote this book slowly over years, at night after the kids went to bed. And finally I was done and then it sat… and sat… and sat. I just felt too scared to do anything with it. Then I thought, what if I die and my kids say, “Did you know Mom wrote a book? And it’s just sitting on her computer doing nothing?” They would know I wasn’t being brave, even though I always encourage them to be. So I e-published it myself on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. It felt great — and scary — to do it. But mostly great.
5. Do you have a day job?
Yes, I work in digital marketing and social media for a consumer packaged goods company.
6. When did you first start writing and when did you finish your book?
I first started the book around 2008 and just completed it last year (final edits, formatting, cover, etc.). So it took about 5 years.
7. How do you choose the genre you write in?
I love young adult fiction! I know I’m too old to be a young adult, but I took a quiz called “How Millennial Are You?” and I scored at 88% so I feel justified somehow…
I like thought-provoking books but I also enjoy breezy, fun reads so that’s what I wanted to write.
8. Where do you get your ideas?
Everywhere and from everyone. That’s what I mean by “snooping” — I really enjoy hearing about people’s lives and everything just gets catalogued away for later use.
9. Do you ever experience writers block?
Not that much – my problem is more that I can’t find the time or if I have the time, I just want to use it to sleep.
10. Do you work with an outline or just write?
I work with an outline. I need to think the whole story through first. That said, sometimes the characters surprise me and do things I didn’t expect. And then the story takes a turn.
11. Is there any particular author that influenced you?
There are so many, I can’t even count. I love everything from Michael Chabon (characters, word selection) and Maria Stemple (humorous, deep insights into artistry, motherhood and humanity) — two wildly different writers. I have always been a book worm and have very eclectic tastes — from highbrow to ultra schlock. Even if a book is bad, there may be one funny line or clever turn that sticks.
12. Is there any aspect of writing your novel you would change?
I wish I could have gotten it done faster!
13. How do you market your work?
I am just starting to do that so I’m not really sure what works and what doesn’t yet. So far, I’m looking for places where YA book-lovers go — and I’m enjoying meeting them.
14. Have you written a book that you love that you have not been able to get published?
I have another mystery, an adult novel, that I want to publish. It just needs more work. I wrote it before HEIRESS, P.I., during a darker time in my life. And I needed a little distance from it because it was too raw. But I think I’m ready now.
15. Can you tell us about your upcoming book?
HEIRESS, P.I. is about a billionairess teenager who goes undercover to investigate a mystery. A few years ago I heard a story about how Paris Hilton gave the police a tip that led them to solve a crime. That got me thinking, what if her whole party girl persona was a ruse, and really she was a private investigator — it might explain some pretty questionable behavior! I usually describe the book as “Veronica Mars meets Paris Hilton.”
16. Is there anything in your book based on real life experiences?
Everything that happens to Lucy in the book are things that have happened to starlets and celebutantes in real life — wardrobe malfunctions, random hookups, arrests, a sex tape. I just have alternative explanations as to why they happened.
17. What was your favorite chapter or part to write and why?
I love all the scenes between Lucy and Holden because they have a true friendship, but now that they are teenagers it’s teetering on becoming more. I know 50 Shades of Gray and all those soft-core books are hot right now, but to me, the best part of a relationship is before it starts.
18. How did you come up with the title?
I wanted to juxtapose the fact that she’s the richest teenager in the world with her new secret life, and HEIRESS, P.I. seemed to do that. I also like the tagline “made over and under cover” because it really drives home that this girl (who is sort of frumpy and shy and hiding in the background) needs to become “famous” and shine in order to get the job done. I wanted to hint at some of that fun part.
19. What project are you working on now?
I am working on editing my other mystery UNCLAD, which is set in a spa. I’m writing some articles as well.
20. Will you have a new book coming out soon?
I hope so. I’d like to get UNCLAD out by the end of this year.
21. Are there certain characters you’d like to go back to? Or are there themes you’d like to work with?
I love the idea of secret lives and mysteries that need solving – there’s definitely more to do there. But I also love Lucy and would like to write a sequel one day. Honestly I think HEIRESS, P.I. would make a fun TV show – a more light-hearted Veronica Mars. If she was swallowed by Gossip Girl.

22. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
I went to a book conference once and had a private meeting with a published author. I had to submit some work prior to the meeting and gave her some chapters that had been read by my writing critique group and several other people. I had gotten some compliments on it so I was feeling pretty confident going in that she would like it. Well, she hated it. HATED IT! It was devastating. That threw me off of writing for almost a year. So I guess that work got both the best compliments and the toughest criticism. You probably can’t take either to heart.
23. Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?
Just do it. Be brave. Don’t let fear hold you back. I was terrified to even tell my cousins when I published HEIRESS, P.I. I couldn’t sleep the night I sent my family the email. But it was silly because of course everyone was supportive. Even if they aren’t, you still should do it.
24. Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers and fans?
Thank you for reading the book. I hope people get a little break and have some fun and laughs, because we all need that sometimes.

Description/Blurb:
Meet Lucy Hansen. She’s the richest teenager in the world – and possibly the shyest. She doesn’t flash her business to the paparazzi as she’s getting out of limos or send selfies while smoking salvia. No, Lucy hides behind her frizzy bangs, environmental causes and organic hemp-blend sweats. Her one true friend (and secret crush) Holden is the poorest kid in Beverly Hills – and probably the scrappiest. He interns for a famous private investigator, and when he asks Lucy to help him crack a case, her life turns from tame to tabloid, from glum to glam, from private to private eye. And when the trail leads directly to her hotel magnate father, it’s up to Lucy to solve the case by infiltrating Hollywood’s most elite and unwelcoming club: Celebutantes. Teens who are famous for, well… being famous.
Along the way, “LuHan” endures wardrobe malfunctions, fake romances, compromising videos-turned-YouTube hits, unflattering mug shots and – worst of all – a makeover. Now Lucy has to save her father, dodge the paparazzi, and keep her IRL ID on the DL – all while maybe, almost, possibly having her first real kiss.
If you’ve ever read the tabloids and wondered, “What was she thinking?” then HEIRESS, P.I. offers one possible answer.
My Thoughts:
Heiress, P.I. by Amanda Mahan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was sent a copy of this book to review by the author.
The author of this book approached me following Bout of Books and asked me if I would be interested in reviewing. After hearing the description, I decided that the story sounded unique enough that my interest was peaked, so I decided that I would take a stab at it. I was not disappointed.
Heiress, PI is kind of like Veronica Mars meets Encyclopedia Brown, with a huge celebrity twist.
Inspired by a true event, this story asks the question, what if your favorite teen celebrity really was a private investigator?
Lucy Hansen is the heiress to a huge hotel conglomerate, and yet her family has a dark, hidden secret, a hidden past that could destroy everything.
I found myself reading through this one pretty quickly, sucked into the drama and the action and the little bit of romance that was thrown in there, too. I actually got a kind of Princess Diaries feel when I got to the section where she is holed up with her grandmother, as well. Not sure why, but it kind of reminded me of that.
Overall, it is well written with few editing missteps and I felt that the few that were there were easily overlooked. I couldn’t even remember where they were right now without going back and re-reading to look for them, which is high praise from me, the editing and grammar nazi, as I have been called by an author or two.
The ending left me hanging on the edge, wanting to know what would be coming next. I really want to know more about these characters and find out where the story leads. If you want a young adult read that is different from the paranormal and fantasy that seems to have proliferated the genre, this is the book for you.

Savannah. Courtney. Peyton. The three sisters grew up not knowing their father and not quite catching a break. But it looks like their luck is about to change when they find out the secret identity of their long-lost dad—a billionaire Las Vegas hotel owner who wants them to come live in a gorgeous penthouse hotel suite. Suddenly the Strip’s most exclusive clubs are all-access, and with an unlimited credit card each, it should be easier than ever to fit right in. But in a town full of secrets and illusion, fitting in is nothing compared to finding out the truth about their past.
My Thoughts: ★★★★
I really don’t know what I was expecting when I started reading this one, but it certainly wasn’t what I got. As always, Harlequin Teen has put out another one that has my sitting at the edge of my seat waiting for the sequel. And since I have no idea when that will be available, I will have to sit here and pine for it.
The characters instantly reached into my heart, having grown up in a situation where they had to struggle, and then thrust into an environment where they are surrounded by prosperity and could feasibly have anything they want. Too bad they can’t have ANYONE they want, though. I felt a strong connection to the young heroines in this novel, and my heart bled for them every time they encountered a new struggle. But what was that, was Adrian warming up to them after all? We will have to see what will come in the next installment.
If I had to criticize anything, it is that the ending seemed a little rushed, and I wish we had a little more to go on. While I love cliffhangers, this one felt like there was something missing and I wish I knew more.

Elena finds herself drawn to both brothers . . . who will she choose?
My Thoughts:
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
If you are a fan of the television show, The Vampire Diaries, then if it hasn’t already, eventually your curiosity will get to you and you will want to read the books that started it all.
I had actually read the first few of these books several years ago and then set them aside and haven’t looked at them again, until now. I am so glad I came back to them because I can look at the differences and see how the story developed.
In the books, the characters are vastly different than what they are in the television show and I find it interesting to see the similarities and differences and how the story plays out.
I am not going to get too in depth about the differences because I don’t want to give away the story, but the most glaring differences are Elena’s family. You will have to read if you want to find out more about that, but let’s just say it totally threw me for a loop. I understand why they changed it some for the show, though, because it plays out better in the show. There are also some characters in the book that aren’t in the show and I do wonder why they were left out, but as I will likely never get the chance to ask the author about it, all I can do is speculate and wonder.
The story is well written, albeit a bit thin on detail. The book does not tell you anything about what happened to Elena’s parents. But conversely, the description of the vampires and what they are capable of is very different as well.
Overall, I enjoyed the story. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger. The book is a quick read and a real page turner and you will find yourself unable to put it down.

What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?
What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?
The explosive conclusion to Veronica Roth’s #1 New York Times bestselling Divergent trilogy reveals the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent andInsurgent.
My Thoughts:
Allegiant by Veronica Roth
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Fair warning. I cannot write this one without spoilers. I am just too emotional about the way this went. You have been warned.
I had to wait quite a while after finishing this book to write the review. I am not going to lie. I was not happy with the way the story ended. To be precise, it has been about a month and a half since I read the book, but it is still in the forefront of my mind and I still feel the same way as I did the end of December when I finished this one. Disappointed, dejected, lost and betrayed.
How in the world can you end a series with such a miserable turn of events. I mean, I get it. Dystopian is not supposed to always be about happily ever after, but really? I think this time you have gone too far, people.
I don’t mean to say the book was poorly written, but the ending did feel a little rushed to me. The author is great at the descriptive side of things, painting a picture and making me feel like I was really a part of the story.
But, how can you force me to say goodbye with such finality to SO many characters? I had high hopes for this one. I am new to the scene with dystopian novels, but I have devoured them like potato chips. You know, that whole, bet you can’t eat just one thing.
But this one put a sour taste in my mouth. I am still going to go out and see the movie(s). Because that is what I do. And then I will come back here to my little blog and write about the differences between the books in the series and the films that they become, but I am sad and lost with how this one ended. While I didn’t see it coming, and I give points for that, I just feel like the author could have done so much more with this!
