Rabid Reader Ramblings: First Impressions: Kindle Unlimited
Well, I know, it has been dangerously quiet here lately. No, I have not stopped reading. No, I have not stopped blogging. But, it tends to get a bit hectic around here during the summer, with a houseful of kids, one of whom hates the fact that she is not in school right now because she yearns for the structured, carefully planned out days that her classroom provided and that mommy stinks at trying to replicate for her at home.
But, hark! I received an email and saw a bunch of hubbub on the interwebs about a service that gave me the means to springboard a new R3 post and I wanted to run with it.
Yes, I am an early adopter for Kindle Unlimited. Yes, I know there are other services out there. I am familiar with them. Yes, I know I can get the same type of thing from a library for free. Except, I can’t. Not really. My areas public library is only just beginning to offer ebooks. And they also only have 1 copy of any given title. Oh, and they tend to get ban-happy. I live in the south. You know, bible thumpers and strong Christian values and all that. Harry Potter is frequently banned, as is the Hunger Games, and a few John Green titles.
Some proponents of the library system might say, well, then read print books. Hmm, I am thinking none of those folks that make that suggestion have 3 kids of their own, plus one they keep for a friend who has to work. They also must not work 12 hour days that make access to the library during operating hours nonexistent. Oh, and then the coup de grace! I am somewhat visually impaired. For print books, in order to read them comfortably anyway without significant effort, I really need large print. A lot of the titles I prefer to read (I read largely young adult) are not available in large print. Let’s be realistic. How many people in the target demographic for YA need large print? How many 32 year olds do you know who can’t see well enough to read regular size print in a book? There are not many. I have asked. Most 70 year olds have better vision than I do. It is a fact of life that I have accepted.
So, I figured, what the heck. Let’s give it a go. I know that Scribd and Oyster are out there. I know those services have a lot of the big publishers that Amazon, well, doesn’t. But neither of those give you the ability to read on e-ink. I spend 12+ hours a day at a computer before I ever even sit down to write a blog post. I don’t want to stare at an LCD screen for several more hours to entertain myself with fiction. I prefer reading on e-ink. Enter Kindle Unlimited.
Yes, a lot of the titles available are self published or readily available in the public domain. You know what, though? I am reading Harry Potter. I can’t make international purchases so I have not previously been able to access the ebooks for the series because my debit card views Pottermore as “international.” So, for the first time, I get to read Harry Potter….with real page numbers…On my Kindle. How sweet is that!
I am in the free trial and have only had the service since the day it released. Will I continue to pay for it? Most likely. Though I have as of yet not really gotten into audiobooks, the 3 month gift subscription to Audible is a nice bonus. I have started that off with one of those John Green titles my library banned.
I think that, with time, the big publishers are going to see that Kindle Unlimited reaches a market that those other services are not able to reach, since they do not offer e-ink compatibility. There are quite a lot of us that, for whatever reason, prefer to read on e-ink devices. It is an untapped market for subscription ebook services as of yet, and I for one am glad that Amazon has decided to give it a go. For 10 bucks a month, I really don’t have a lot to lose since, well, I read more than 100 books a year anyway. That works out to…more than 8 books a month, more than 2 books a week. Some weeks those numbers are actually much higher depending on what I am reading. SO when you divide 8 books into 10 bucks, it is a little over a dollar a book. And, well, there are 7 Harry Potter books, then 3 Hunger Games, 3 in Lord of the Rings. And since I actually don’t mind reading indie, since I am an indie author myself, I am good with there being a large quantity of self pubbed authors. I just wish they had Anne of Green Gables.

02. How did you start book blogging? What got you interested in starting, were there particular blogs that influenced or encouraged your decision? (If you don’t have a book blog, are you interested in starting one?)
It may sound weird, but the first trigger was getting a Nook tablet from a friend for Christmas that year. It got me back to reading again and involved in online book communities, which led to the friendship that ultimately inspired my book blogging journey.
03. What’s your ultimate book-inspired holiday? What would you do and would you take anyone with you? Has a particular book or author inspired this?
The only real answer I have for this one is that there is a book-themed hotel in New York City. I would love to spend a few days there.
04. Which five authors (dead or alive) would you invite to a dinner party and why? Who do you think would get along and what would you talk about?
Hmm, this is such a tough one! Probably Charlaine Harris, Amanda Hocking, Katie McGarry, Sarah J. Maas and Charles Dickens. I know, I know. That is a really eclectic grouping but I think it would make for some interesting discussions about the state of the literary world as we know it.
05. What were the last three books you recommended to someone and why did you choose these particular books to recommend? If your last recommendations were a large list shared all at once, then pick three books.
Gosh, you know, I honestly don’t do a whole lot of recommending outside of just reviewing on my blog.
06. Describe your perfect reading experience. Paperback, Hardback or eBook? Genre? Where are you reading? Alone or in company? Indoors or outside? Season? Weather? What time of day? Snacks?
I think the ideal environment for me would be alone, camping in a quiet forest park. Just me, nature and a few good books.
07. Everyone’s entitled to an opinion. What are your thoughts on negative comments and reviews on books? Does it make a difference for you if they involve any constructive criticism or feedback?
I think there is nothing wrong with a negative review as long as it is constructive and not just author bashing. I think as long as you are constructive and explain why you did not care for something, then the review still has value and merit.
08. What would your ultimate dream book collection include? What would it look like and how would you arrange your books?’=
Oh my, well, honestly, you know the library in Beauty and the Beast? That’s all I am going to say.
09. What are your biggest book-related pet peeves? Why do these things bother you more than others?
Dog eared pages. And broken spines. Those drive me absolutely crazy and I really have no idea why!
10. What are some of your favourite things about people who read books? These may be generalisations or relate to a specific person.
People who read books are able to converse on a level that few others are able. There is something about book people that just seems more well educated, more well informed, than people who do not read regularly. I feel a kinship with people who read, and I am able to relate with them as I can with few other groups of people.

Description/Blurb:
When she first moved to Japan, American Katie Green had no idea she would get caught in a battle between the Japanese mafia and the supernatural forces that have governed Japan for most of its history. Despite the danger, Katie is determined to stay put. She’s started to build a life in the city of Shizuoka, and she can’t imagine leaving behind her friends, her aunt and especially Tomohiro, the guy she’s fallen in love with.
But the decision to stay is not as simple as she thought. She’s flunking out of Japanese school and committing cultural faux pas wherever she goes. Tomohiro is also struggling—as a Kami, his connection to the ancient gods of Japan and his power to bring drawings to life have begun to spiral out of control.
When Tomo decides to stop drawing, the ink finds other ways to seep into his life—blackouts, threatening messages and the appearance of unexplained sketches. Unsure how to help Tomo, Katie turns to an unexpected source for help—Jun, her former friend and a Kami with an agenda of his own. But is Jun really the ally he claims to be? In order to save themselves, Katie and Tomohiro must unravel the truth about Tomo’s dark ancestry, as well as Katie’s, and confront one of the darkest gods in Japanese legend.
My Thoughts:
Rain by Amanda Sun
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I had long anticipated this sequel, and I am so grateful to the publisher for allowing me to access it through Netgalley so that I could read and review the title.
That being said, my emotions feel raw and toyed with right now! There were many parts of this one that I enjoyed even more than the first one. I still felt a bit stupid because of some of the Japanese terminology, and I had to use my phone to keep looking things up as I was reading, but in a way, that felt good, too because I was learning about a new culture. The way the characters had developed and changed from Ink through the story of Rain, there was a beauty and a mystery to it, which was sometimes also very, very frightening.
This story was at once thrilling, beautiful, romantic, adventurous and horrifying. So many emotions, so little book. It really is impressive.
All of that being said, though, the last few pages were somewhat, well, irritating. The ending seemed way to open-ended. I mean, I know it is not the end of the series or anything, but I feel like instead of having any kind of closure, I am left with way more questions than the author will be able to answer in the one remaining book in the series that will be out next year. I am at once satisfied with the story, and yet very frustrated with the ending.
To have all of the turmoil, only to fall together in the end. It’s the age-old story of forbidden love that we have seen over and over throughout the genre of YA Romance. It was good, but some parts of it were just too, well, expected.

Description/Blurb:
What really happened after the clock struck midnight?
Jane Montjoy is tired of being a lady. She’s tired of pretending to live up to the standards of her mother’s noble family—especially now that the family’s wealth is gone and their stately mansion has fallen to ruin. It’s hard enough that she must tend to the animals and find a way to feed her mother and her little sister each day. Jane’s burden only gets worse after her mother returns from a trip to town with a new stepfather and stepsister in tow. Despite the family’s struggle to prepare for the long winter ahead, Jane’s stepfather remains determined to give his beautiful but spoiled child her every desire.
When her stepfather suddenly dies, leaving nothing but debts and a bereaved daughter behind, it seems to Jane that her family is destined for eternal unhappiness. But a mysterious boy from the woods and an invitation to a royal ball are certain to change her fate….
From the handsome prince to the evil stepsister, nothing is quite as it seems in Tracy Barrett’s stunning retelling of the classic Cinderella tale.
My Thoughts:
The Stepsister’s Tale by Tracy Barrett
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Okay, let me start this out by saying that I am not a frequent reader of retellings, but I was also not a huge fairy tale fan, even as a child. I just couldn’t picture them being even remotely realistic as a child, and that annoyed me.
Enter the Adult Lisa now, and I can see the beauty in them. I haven’t really read a lot of fairy tale retellings, so I really did not know what to expect. But the story seemed interesting enough that I requested it on Netgalley to see what the fuss was all about.
I found the story both enchanting and frustrating. Isabella irritated me beyond belief in the beginning, and then entranced me in the end.
I really disliked the mother, though. She was in so far removed from the reality of the ruin and disarray that they lived in that she shut down and ignored the life her children were having to live. I found that both depressing and infuriating.
Isabella, of course, was the evil step-sibling personified. I imagine if a child were to hear this version of the story, without hearing the ending, they would shudder in fear if a parent were to remarry, afraid that this is what they will end up with for a new “family.”
Overall, I felt that the story was creative, but there were a few subplots that I felt could have been a little bit better developed, like the people in the woods. I did, however, enjoy the story enough to curiously check my library for other titles by the same author. If you are a fan of retellings, you definitely should give this one a try.

Description/Blurb:
Morgan Abbey’s life is about to change.
Just weeks before her senior year is set to begin, a mysterious stranger approaches Morgan with information that has far-reaching ramifications. First, the psychic ability she believes she has just been pretending to have since middle school might actually be real.
Second, her mother, who disappeared abruptly and completely almost a decade ago, might still be alive.
Morgan finds herself in the drawn into a centuries-old struggle involving a group of people who quietly coexist alongside the common people of the world. This shadowy group believes it is time for them to reclaim their former positions of power—and they believe Morgan is the key.
But when the time comes, will Morgan be able to do what it takes to reunite with her mother and fulfill her destiny?
My Thoughts:
Awaking by Madeline Freeman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I am not entirely sure what I expected when I started reading this book, but it definitely wasn’t what I found within its pages, that I can day with certainty.
Parts of the story seemed at once both formal and too informal. why was Morgan’s father always referred to by his first name? That bothered me for reasons I all not able to identify.
For some reason, Orrick reminds me of some twisted, powder hungry cross between President Snow from the Hunger Games and Lord Voldemort of Harry Potter game. he is overly confident in his position and power and abilities and so expects no one to oppose him.
I will readily about that I could tell fairly early on that Mr. K was odd, and thwart he was going to play a much larger roll as time went on. I was both surprised and not to find or more about him toward the end.
I felt, though, like the book ended abruptly and entirely too soon. I felt like there should have been more, I needed there to have been more. By the time I was done, I was left with more questions than answers. Is it possible to have a book fell both unique and familiar at the same time? Because that is kind of how I feel right now. Surprised, but yet not at the same. I will withhold further judgment until I can read the rest of the series and see how things play out.

A Brief Update for the #treesofreveriereadathon
So, It’s technically speaking day 3 in this readathon so far, and thus far I have read 340 pages. I am into my second book, and this book meets one of my reading prompts or reading challenges (without going back and looking, I don’t remember which category it was in) of being a book I was sent for an honest review. I am currently reading The Stepsister’s Tale. I am about 25% into the book and so far it is starting to get kind of interesting. My first book of the readathon, which I had started just prior to the readathon and got to finish up, was The Body in the Woods by April Henry and became one of the few negative reviews that will be posted on my blog. The review went up yesterday, June 17th. I was not thrilled with the book, but you all can read my review and decide for yourselves.
A little later today, I will be answering the questions in the questionnaire. Are you all participating as well? Please feel free to comment and let me know so I can visit your posts as well!

Description/Blurb:
Alexis, Nick, and Ruby have very different backgrounds: Alexis has spent her life covering for her mom’s mental illness, Nick’s bravado hides his fear of not being good enough, and Ruby just wants to pursue her eccentric interests in a world that doesn’t understand her. When the three teens join Portland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, they are teamed up to search for a autistic man lost in the woods. What they find instead is a dead body. In a friendship that will be forged in danger, fear and courage, the three team up to find the girl’s killer—before he can strike one of their own.
This first book in April Henry’s Point Last Seen YA mystery series, The Body in the Woods is full of riveting suspense, putting readers right in the middle of harrowing rescues and crime scene investigations.
My Thoughts:
The Body in the Woods by April Henry
My rating: 1 of 5 stars
1-1/2 stars.
Even though I read this in the span of 1 day, I really struggled with the story. I had requested this on Netgalley because I was very intrigued. I have been reading a lot of fantasy and thought it would be nice to read something different. Three different point of views? Murder mystery involving teenagers? Sounded like just what I needed.
But I just felt like the story was awkward. There were actually 4 point of views presented in the book. There were the three main characters, and then the “bad guy.”
Here is the thing. I watch a lot of Criminal Minds, so serial killers with strange patterns that make no sense? That should be a great thing and I should have loved it. But I really had a hard time getting the story to come together in my head. It just didn’t seem like it fit.
There were some unnecessary plot points. Bran, and that whole scenario, just didn’t make sense. It seems like them meeting was a hasty addition to the story just so there was a romantic element, because obviously, teen books have to have romance, right? But they don’t. A YA novel can be awesome even if there is no romance. It felt like just filler. The same with the disappearing act by Alexis’ mom. That was just there to fill space, fill up pages. It really didn’t serve any great purpose.
Also, I know this was an ARC, so not fully edited, but there were inconsistencies in the story that made me feel awkward. When they found Becker’s notebook in the beginning, they had said the drawing pages were blank, but later, Alexis mentions having seen drawings before but chalking it up to bad art. I guess, in a way, I am like Ruby and I look for those inconsistencies.
The story had a lot of promise, and it really could have been an awesome book. For many, maybe it would be a great read, but for me, I just felt like I needed something that I didn’t get while reading this one. I liked the friendship that formed between the 3 main characters in the end, but it just wasn’t enough to redeem the story for me. But as always, you need to judge for yourself. Maybe the things that bothered me about this story may not be an issue for you. You need to check it out for yourself.

Lily: What? Boys are important for a summer to remember. And now that we’re both single we can have a little fun with them.
Hadley: Are you done?
Lily: Fine. What’s your number one?
Hadley: (grins) My best friend.
Lily: Oh! And a job working with your best friend.
Hadley: Yes that too.
Lily: (pauses dramatically) And on a serious note…sunscreen.
Hadley: UV protection is important.
Lily: I was thinking more along the lines of awful tan lines.
Hadley: Okay…
Lily: Next is…parties. And oh! Older brothers who can get supplies for parties, if you know what I mean.
Hadley: Oh my God…
Lily: So we have boys, best friends, a job WITH a best friend, sunscreen, parties, brothers, what else?
Hadley: Camp!
Lily: That counts as a job with your best friend.
Hadley: Camp should be a category of its own—
Lily: Here we go…
Hadley: But without camp we wouldn’t have had the best summers of our lives. And we will be a part of making that happen for the kids.
Lily: Yeah. I’m still sticking with boys.
Hadley: You’re hopeless, but I do love you! Well that does it, everyone. Be sure to make this summer, a summer to remember. And comment below with your must haves I’d love to hear them!

And So We Begin: The #treesofreveriereadathon!!
So this runs for two weeks, from the 16th to the 1st, essentially. What do I hope to accomplish in that two weeks? Oh, well, I plan to read a crapton of books.
Because seriously? This is kinda my review pile right now.
I know, I know, it’s My Little Pony. But I have a 3 year old daughter. She is obsessed, and just watched this episode today. I kinda get how Spike (the little dinosaur looking thing) feels when those books fall on him!
I have been painfully behind on my Netgalley Reviews, so by the end of the Event, I want to be able to say that I have finished at least 10 of my Netgalley Review books. Think I can do it? Is it too lofty a goal? Are you participating as well? Link me below! Or just tell me I am insane, or that I need to have grownup time, because both are TOTALLY TRUE!!!
