French children's books are scary for kids and adults

Did you know that the French have a reputation for having scary kids books? I guess inventing "ennui" for the toddlers wasn't enough. They have to have existential crises too!

Clockwise from bottom right: My First Nightmare, The Weight of Disappointment, The Visit from Little Death, The Silent Child, The Weight of Disappointment, The Revenge of the Rabbits, The Official Pompon Girls' Handbook. (I threw in that last one to cheer you up.) Via the Guardian.[image error]

Library Humor

"Libraries: Where SHHH Happens"

(origin unknown)

Also, I wrote an essay for the Oregonian recently titled "Children's Authors are Awful People." It was republished in the Oregon Association of School Librarians newsletter, and here's how it showed up in the Table of Contents.

Do you see what those librarians did there?
(Shhh happens!)

Grab Bag!

Have the day off? Read something! For starters, try this kind review of The Big Book of Gross Stuff that comes with a nice reminder at the end.

For any writers out there, you may want to consider using a pen name or pseudonym . . . like the guy who wrote How to Make Money in Your Spare Time.

Finally, here's a funny shop sign I saw the other day when I was riding my bike.

The Alpine Finger Wrestling Championships

Learn more!

Competitors subject themselves to an intense regime of finger training in the build up to a tournament, with some preferring to squeeze tennis balls or holding their own body weight with a single finger, some insist that a series of one-finger press ups is the best method of strengthening.

Do you know why Victor Hugo's masterpiece stank?

Because The Hunchback of Notre Dame wasn't more like the Disney film!

I hate memes.

But even I will make an exception for the "evil cows" meme.
