Friday Update 9/13/13

There are some weeks when it feels like I drop off the face of the earth, socially. This week was one of them. I don’t remember getting on Facebook or Twitter. I know I got on Tumblr… but that was for like 10 minutes. So, aside from chatting with my betas throughout the day, and seeing my IRL people once this week, it’s just been me, Earl, Lu, and my books.

And that wasn’t such a bad thing. It

Research of Another Sort

Yesterday on my lunch hour at work, I sat down and did something a little out of the ordinary. I outlined a chapter from someone elses book.

That’s not exactly accurate, I guess. It was a specific type of scene. The type of scene was one I myself was having difficulty writing. So my outline was not a dissection of what happened in the scene, so much as a look at how the order of things came

First week of September

September is the beginning of the end. I’ve got until the middle of November to get the remaining 27% of my million word count goal (because my ability to write in December is comical – if not pathetic). Fingers crossed I can do it!

Words Written: 18,451 (not too shabby for 3 days)
Books Read: 1 (The Darwin Elevator)

This month, being part of my final push, has some pretty lofty goals,

When Good isn’t Good Enough

I wrote a chapter today. It’s a part of a science fantasy novel that is a huge undertaking. And while I’ve been plotting it out for a long while now, I’ve never had a first chapter that I liked. This was the first chapter (with my newest outline) and I really liked it.

And then I read it again.

It was missing something. Something important. Something that, without it, made the story not good

August has come to a close

August is over!
Well, it is as far as writing is concerned.

Words Written: 97,728
Books Read: 0

I made it to my overall goal before I left for a long trip to Oregon for a wedding. It was one of those goals that you cross your fingers, close your eyes, hold your breath, and hope it actually happens.

But, becasue of my mad dash to get the word count in in 11 days, I didn't get any

Writing What Flows Vs. Writing to a Deadline

When I don’t have a specific deadline, or if I don’t have a tangible goal (Finish X ms’ first draft), I tend to bounce around to whatever project I feel like writing. It’s a great thing when my tangible goal is a set amount of words in a set amount of time.

Writing what flows is a nice break from the normal push to get one specific ms done.

When you work on what’s flowing at the time, you don’

I’m Not Really Here, Promise.

Words Written: 0

While I’ve written a few things here and there this week, they’re mostly just notes of things to do next week (in the final two writing days of the month). I’ve been taking this vacation seriously and enjoying the heck out of it.
They always say you should treat writing like a day job… well, this is my PTO – not really.

Organizing the Crazy

If you’ve been around this blog for very long, you know I refer to the maelstrom of thoughts and ideas swirling around in my head a Brain Soup. It’s like a big bowl of pho sloshing around in my head, and I have to pluck the relevant bits out to make any real sense of it (I also eat my pho with a fork).

Because of the crazy mess in my head, I take a lot of notes, I make a lot of spreadsheets,
