Riker Cavell

Main Character: Irreverent
Hair: black, high and tight, thick beard that frames his strong jaw
Eyes: Grey marble
Age at first appearance: 36
Height: 6’3″
Car: Black ’68 Mustang Fastback with gunmetal racing stripes.
Employment: Cole Security. Riker left the Navy SEALs after sustaining an injury to his left shoulder which left him with significant nerve damage. When he left the Navy, he felt like he’d lost the only family he had left.
Parents: Riker had a difficult childhood and avoids talking about his family.
Family: Riker has a seven-year-old daughter named Kinsley who now lives in Maine with her mother, Harper, and her step-father. Harper left Riker four years ago when she couldn’t deal with the constant uncertainty of his life as a SEAL and the constant separation from her family in Maine. She moved back to Maine where she met and married Vincent two years ago. Despite the divorce, Riker has maintained a relationship with Kinsley and attended Harper’s wedding.
Characteristics: Riker is highly respected for being quick-thinking and dependable among those who know him, but he often comes across as cocky and impulsive to others. Considering himself a man of action and not words, he sometimes becomes flippant when asked to explain himself or his motivations. He is extremely head-strong and doesn’t often compromise. While he cares deeply for others, especially his daughter, he finds it difficult to maintain personal connections and relies on his wit to deflect from serious issues.
Identifying marks: Riker has scarring on his left shoulder down to his elbow. A frog skeleton tattoo on the underside of his right arm surrounded by tribal markings that extend around his arm; a tribal phoenix tattoo on his left calf; and a tattoo on his thigh with Kinsley’s name, DOB and footprints.

Creating a Writing Bible with Airtable
I mentioned Airtable a few weeks ago among my Friday Fives: Favorite Writing Tools.
I’m going to give you a little overview of how I’ve used Airtable to turn my unorganized collection of notes and spreadsheets and images into an effective and organized Writing Bible.
One of the greatest benefits I’ve found with Airtable is the ability to organize a variety of media types and cross reference between tables within the database.
I’m not covering every tab in my database, because spoilers, but I’ve included screen captures and a general overview if you’re interested in finding a new way to organize your thoughts and character info.
Book Info

My first spreadsheet is dedicated to book information and metadata. With a quick look I can find my book’s AISN, ISBN, character names, pricing, covers, and more. You could also add store universal links, blurbs, and anything else you might need for marketing. Each of the spreadsheets come with numerous options to create different views, so you can organize your books by series, publication status, or quickly hide fields you don’t need to see and save each of the views for quick access.
Character Info

Next up we have detailed information for each of the characters where I can enter quick notes, about their appearance, mannerisms, importance, relationships, and affiliations with clubs, businesses or locations. For all of my main characters, I have also included reference or inspiration images, which I can focus on by switching over to gallery view.

Locations & Associations
I have two spreadsheets to track locations that my characters may visit and associations like clubs, organizations, or other groups they’re affiliated with.

Supplemental Info
I also have a couple of spreadsheets with reference images for different eye and hair colors, so when I’m building my character profiles, I can select choices with a visual reference.

Airtable presents an almost endless list of possibilities to organize your ideas and characters to keep everything straight while you’re writing and building a series.
If you’d like to give Airtable a try to create your own Writing Bible but don’t want to start from scratch, you can click the link below to access a blank copy of my database to customize and fill in however you’d like.

“…you’ll be plenty warm soon enough.”
“I’ll turn up the heat, but you’ll be plenty warm soon enough.” He popped me on the butt. “Move.”
The impact startled me at first, taking my breath. I scrambled to the bed and laid back, feeling completely exposed while he walked across the room, first to the window to adjust the temperature, then back to the dresser, returning to his mysterious satchel. He cleared off one side table and placed the bag on top within his reach.
His muscles flexed under his skin as he climbed onto the bed between my legs. Placing one hand on my hip, he moved up my body, leaving a trail of kisses until he reached my exposed breasts.
Then, he moved my hands up, so they were stretched out perpendicular to my body. “Don’t move, beautiful,” he whispered, sitting back on his knees while his eyes flickered over my bare flesh.
“Those aren’t exactly comforting words, you know.”
“Nor were they meant to be.” His voice held a stern edge, reminding me I didn’t know all the rules to this game. He stretched out over me, supporting himself on his elbows. “What do you feel right now?”
Am I really supposed to have an answer for that? I blinked, but he didn’t seem to be joking. “I don’t know.”
He pressed his lips together. “Well then, I’ll just sit here and stare at you until you figure it out.”
I fidgeted and looked across the room toward the window. What the hell does he want?
“I said, don’t move,” he said, pulling my chin back so I had to look up at him. “That’s one. ‘I don’t know’ is a copout. You use it when you don’t want to dig deep enough to come up with a genuine answer.”
One? One what? I clenched my jaw.
