“I’m not completely heartless and unreasonable.”

“Thank you,” I said, unsure if it was the wine talking or the comforting feeling of the sun. I stretched out on my stomach across the blanket and let the sun warm my back. Kirk stretched out next to me, resting on his side.

“I’m not completely heartless and unreasonable.”

I smiled then rolled to my back. I leaned up and kissed his lips.

His eyes widened, and he jerked back slightly. “You don’t have—”

“I know, but every time you try to protect me, I make things harder.”

“I manage.”

“I know, but—I just—Can you make me forget where we are? Just for a little while?”

He looked like he was going to argue, but he pressed his lips to mine, and slid one hand up under my shirt. His fingers left tingling coolness in their wake as they traveled up to caress the underside of my breast.

“What are you up to, Silver?”

“We discussed this already. Then we got interrupted and the day went to shit. Can we just skip all of that today?”

His thumb traced the outside of my nipple and I felt it stiffen. Seeing his muscle, watching him use it, and being the victim of its use, it seemed contradictory that he could touch me with such delicacy.

He was probably quite experienced in getting women right where he wanted them with as few steps as necessary. I arched toward his touch, and his soft caresses turned into pinches, and rougher massaging motions. He pulled my leg up and slid his finger up the leg of my shorts and into my underwear while he kissed down my jawline and nipped at my earlobe.

“Unbutton your shorts,” he whispered directly into my ear. “Take them off.”

I did, lifting my hips to slide them down and then, kicking them off. He flipped me over to straddle his hips, and lifted my shirt over my head, before taking my breasts into his hands and capturing each of my nipples between two fingers.

My hips rocked, rubbing against his. I nearly fell forward when he released my breasts and trailed his fingers down my sides. He sat up, and I slid against his hips, into his lap. He took his shirt off and threw it on the blanket behind me, pulling my bare chest against his as he explored my neck and chest with his mouth—and intermittently his teeth. I felt his erection growing under me with each subtle movement I made.

I dragged my fingers through his short hair then pulled back, tracing my fingers over the curves of the tattoo from his shoulder down to his elbow.

“You really like snakes.”

“You want to talk about tattoos right now?” He bit my lip, and then laid me back on the blanket, to unzip his pants and free his erect cock.

I shook my head, lifting my hips to meet him as he slid inside me. As much as I wanted to forget where I was, and why I was doing this, it continued echoing in my head. I wanted to know if this was what it was usually like. And I wanted to gut myself for not only giving in but inciting him.

Eric Finley

Main Character: Entrust, Trust Fall

Hair: dark brown, a bit messy on top

Eyes: Hazel

Age at first appearance: 32

Height: 6’2″

Residence: He just moved back to Morrow Falls where he’s temporarily living in one of his parents’ rental houses with his nephew, Charlie.

Education: BS in Information Technology, NROTC

Employment: Left the Navy when his sister and brother-in-law were killed in a car accident to care for his six-year-old nephew. His last position was at Crane Division Naval Base as an Information Technology Officer.

Parents: Father, Daniel, retired county engineer. Mother, Vivian, is an extrovert with a reputation for gossiping with her friends. Eric and his parents have butted heads over his open participation in the BDSM lifestyle and support of Club Obsidian.

Affiliations: Elite member of Club Obsidian

Siblings: Sister, Ashley, married Gerald Grove seven years ago and had a six-year-old son.

Characteristics: Eric struggled to reconcile his control issues early in life, but when Cade introduced him to BDSM, he finally understood the kind of control he truly craved. He’s been involved in the lifestyle for more than ten years, but has rarely pursued a serious relationship outside of the club. He is strong-headed and determined to live every part of his life on his own terms which has caused friction with his family over the years because of their concern with public perception and his to-hell-with-it attitude. Despite his lack of long-term relationships, he cares deeply about those around him and remains in contact with many of his former submissives. He is an attentive Dom who thinks carefully about each aspect of a scene and his submissive’s reactions throughout.

Bonus Scene

Eric’s POV when he and Lena first meet….

In one week, I’d buried my sister and moved across two state lines back to my hometown to raise her son. Friday night, I drove into town, my car filled with boxes and suitcases, and went straight to Diggers Sports Bar where I was supposed to meet up with a friend before picking up Charlie in the morning. Unfortunately, Cade, the bar’s owner, had to take over bartending duty at the last minute when two of his servers called off. It was game night, and the local sports bar was packed, but I spotted one empty seat near the end of the bar and headed straight for it.

A lone blonde sat at the end of the bar, staring down at her drink. She straightened her back when I ordered my drink, but kept her gaze focused on her glass. I didn’t pay much attention at first, more concerned with getting that first drink in me and quieting the roar in my head. Cade sat a tall Smithwicks in front of me and headed back to the other side of the bar. I tried to lose myself in the noise, the drink, the game blaring on the TV at the end of the bar, anything to distract me from the reason I’d moved back home.

As I lowered my glass, I noticed her straighten again. This time, her cheeks flushed, and the pale pink seemed to highlight her bright green eyes. Her wavy blonde hair fell mid-way down her back.

“You hang out here often?” I asked.

She shifted in her seat and tightened her grip on the glass in front of her. “That all you got for an opening line?”

“I’m rusty.”  I took another drink, unable to look away from her.

“Rusty, huh? Fitting name.” Her words were confident, but her eyes betrayed her.

Somehow all of the thoughts that had weighed on me for days faded into the background with the sounds of the bar. Only one thought remained, I had to know this woman’s name.

Friday Fives: Favorite Autographs

I thought it would be fun, now that I have my blog up and running, to share some of my favorite things. Every week, I’ll be back with a new top 5 list with everything from books to snacks.

Today, I’m sharing some of my most prized autographs.

Deborah Harkness

I read A Discovery of Witches during my final year of grad school. It was the first work of fiction I’d read voluntarily in years! And the first time I read it, I picked it apart like dissecting it was an assignment for one of my classes. But, I couldn’t get it out of my head and read it three more times by the end of the year. This was the book that inspired me to pick up my pen and start writing again. It was fantastic to meet Deborah Harkness and hear her speak on the series.

Bruce Campbell

Hail to the King, baby! I’ve met Bruce Campbell twice, and he’s always entertaining and good to his fans. The second time I met him, I was 19, and my 17-year-old sister and I drove four hours each way, by ourselves, to meet him. After I was up the entire night before with food poisoning. I’m really surprised our family agreed to the whole thing, but we had a blast!

Alan Alda

Oh, how I love thee. I’ve been watching M*A*S*H since I was baby. My family would put me in front of the TV while it was on and I’m told that every time Alan Alda appeared on screen I always reached out for him. Which was odd, because if anyone else tried to pick me up, or even look at me, I erupted into tears. I still watch M*A*S*H often, and I’ve collected all of Alan Alda’s memoirs and listen to his podcast.

Joe Bob Briggs

Heads will roll! Did anyone else grow up on MonsterVision on TNT? It was my weekly ritual and I discovered a lot of my favorite horror movies on the show. I particularly remember the Dusk to Dawn Friday the 13th Marathon that aired in 1998 when I gathered all of my siblings around the TV for an epic introduction to Jason. Which means I would have been about 14, and my youngest sibling was 7, so it’s probably a good thing it was edited for cable TV, but Joe Bob’s commentary through the marathon was a riot.

Corinne Michaels

Another of my author idols, this is one of my many signed books from Corinne Michaels. Consolation was the first book I read from her, and it was heart-gripping. I love how she can interject the right about of humor and realism into her stories. It feels like I can walk outside and run into one of the characters from her books. I also met Corinne back in 2014 in NYC and was so nervous, I’m surprised I could make words. Now, I’m participating in her Salvation Society World, and I’m so excited for everyone to see our characters collide.

Write It Wednesday: Hack Your Brain

Are you sick of looking at the same passages over and over during rewrites and self-editing? It’s always hard to catch your own mistakes, but this simple brain hack could make these tasks more effective.

Change up your font.

Use something distinctly different–a script, a font designed for dyslexia, or even the illustrious Comic Sans. This change not only breaks up the monotony of looking at your manuscript again and again, it also cues your brain to pay more attention. Science has shown that using a different font, particularly one that is unfamiliar or more difficult to read aids in processing information because it forces you to pay more attention. In fact, a multidisciplinary team of designers and behavioural scientists at RMIT in Melbourne have created a font called Sans Forgetica based on these findings and offer it as a free download. As writers, we spend much of our lives staring at text, and often reading the same passage over and over, but this little trick is an easy way to get the most out of your self-editing process. Give it a try and see how it works for you.

I’m proud to be a team member and editor at Write Your Best Book

If you need more help with your manuscript or you’re ready for a professional edit, we’d love to help. You can email Write Your Best Book, info@writeyourbestbook.com, and be sure to follow us on social media and we’ll follow you back!

Tuesday Updates: 20WTF

For many of us, it has already been some year. I mean, really, universe? Really?

I haven’t really blogged in quite a while, but this week I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of it. After all, I can’t really leave the house. Does that mean I’m really getting much done? Um, no.

2020 Recap thus far

Last December my Mother-in-law was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. She passed a few weeks later and we had the funeral on January 4.
I had also been having severe mental health issues since November and December, which you can imagine was exacerbated by the whole situation. I held it together until after the funeral, and then it took me nearly 6 weeks to get in for a psych evaluation. Six long, friggin weeks with nothing to take for the 5-10 severe panic attacks I was experiencing every day. Finally, I got my medication in late February and by March, things were starting to level out. I declared March 1 my personal new year and expected to kick ass.
Oh, March, thou art a heartless bitch. Cue the pandemic. Sir is out of work. We can’t leave the house. I ended up sewing masks instead of doing much else productive. And having asthma, the anxiety of this whole threat is a daily concern.
Now it’s April, complete with springtime allergies and sinus headaches. Last week, I destroyed my computer screen in the midst of working on projects. Utterly destroyed, and to make sure I got the right screen to replace it, I had to take my computer apart, which meant I couldn’t use an external screen until I put it back together so I had no access to the projects I was working on. This happened on the same day we got a call from my husband’s family saying his grandma fell down the stairs and probably broke her leg and arm.
Then, today…. Let’s talk about today. My meds made me sick, so I went to the kitchen for some food. The wall cabinets made a weird sound and I realized they were about to fall, so I moved everything from the counter–you know, important stuff like the coffee maker. And just as I jumped out of the way, the cabinets came down and clipped my arm. Friggin hell!! And then, I heard another rukus in the kitchen and find the cats terrorizing a lizard. Wallace the Lizard has been rescued and returned to his natural habitat in the back yard.

WTF, 2020? WTF?

But there’s been some good stuff going on, too.

I’m working as an editor with Write Your Best Book, and I love editing, so it has been great. Plus, Christy is an awesome business woman and it’s an honor to be on her team.
I’m still kicking!
Bodhi beer has been in stock at Kroger the last couple of months.
I saved the coffee maker and the lizard.
The Last Drive-In season 2 starts Friday.
I kinda/sorta have an office again! For the first time since October, the office is somewhat usable. I say somewhat because my desk is currently taken over by my sewing machine and all the sewing floof I need to make masks. But, it’s progress.

It has just been a clusterfuck! So, if you’re having a clusterfuck of a year, just know you’re not alone. Many of us are powering through. It’s all we can do, but we will do it.

Writing

I haven’t been talking a lot about my writing, because I don’t always know what to say. I get stuck in my head, especially with everything going on, but rest assured, I’m working. Because of the chaos I missed my pre-order date on Amazon for Trust Fall, but the final book is rounding out to be even more than I ever imagined. I love Lena and Eric, and they’re getting the story they deserve with plenty of kink, heartbreak, laughs, and romance. I hope I’ll have it out to everyone soon!

I’ve also had to take some time away from Trust Fall in the last few months to plan out my story for the Salvation Society. Corinne Michaels is my unicorn and writing a book connected to her Salvation Series is an enormous honor. It’s also terrifying. Her books are a-friggin-mazing and I don’t want to let her or her readers down. But, I know some of my long-time readers will get a kick out of seeing some familiar faces from my books cross over with hers. The story will include a kick-ass, snarky, confident, gets-what-she-wants heroine paired up with a former Navy SEAL who is the epitome of alphaness. Irreverent is going to be a blast!

Thank you all so much for sticking with me and supporting me. You mean more to me than you’ll ever understand. I have a bunch of blog posts scheduled for the next few weeks, so keep popping in for updates to see what’s new and have some fun!

What to expect….

Bi-weekly updates and thoughts from the desk of Skye Callahan on Tuesdays!
