Where to EAT and STAY in Calgary?

Where to have brunch in Calgary? Deane House
Enjoy refined seasonal Canadian cuisine in the historic riverside home built in 1906 for Captain Richard Burton Deane, the last serving North West Mounted Police Superintendent in Calgary. The gardens are beautiful and the house is located in Inglewood, at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers, in the heart of Blackfoot territory, once known as Moh’Kinsstis.

Meet me at Fairmont Palliser, Calgary
I loved my stay at Fairmont Royal York in Toronto and was excited to see the Fairmont Palliser. I enjoyed drinks with friends at this beautiful property near the Calgary Tower. Thank you to Christine, Lindsay and Noelle for a wonderful afternoon.

Where to STAY in CALGARY?
The Residence Inn by Marriott Calgary Downtown/Beltline District has gigantic suites with full kitchens and stunning views of the Calgary Tower from sunrise to sunset. The breakfast buffet was enormous and the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and managed to keep all the tasty food resupplied constantly! The location was perfect for walking to dinner, downtown or all the best sites.

Where to EAT in CALGARY? I loved Orchard Calgary
Thanks to Jen and Pursuit Collection for lunch at Orchard and amazing adventures to Denali, Alaska and Reykjavik, Iceland

What to DO in CALGARY, Canada?

Nicole and I worked on cruise ships together decades ago and we had a reunion in Banff in 2018. She took me strolling to see her favorite spots in the Mission and Inglewood. The trails and parks in Calgary are stunning! I also loved swimming at MNP Community & Sport Centre. What an incredible complex. I could swim there every day!

I loved wandering through living history at over 180 attractions and exhibits from the 1860s to the 1950s at Heritage Park.

My favorite place in the park was the Little Yellow Prairie Synagogue, which served a Jewish community in eastern Alberta from 1916. In 1910, Romanian Jewish farmers left Europe as under the Tzar, Jews could not own land. Canada offered ownership of a quarter section of farm land for $10.
I learned so much from my guide, Eli Kogut! The Ark and lions were donated from Winnipeg and the Torah is from Prague, it is 250 years old and the oldest artifact at Heritage Park Calgary. The Torah was stolen during the Holocaust and rescued from Hitler’s Museum of Extinction where it now can be used for Bat Mitzvahs! I love how this building was rescued and brought here to share the resilience of our people!
Do you love cars? You need to see Gasoline Alley! With cars from the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s including a Shell station.

Do you like heights? Join me at the top of the Calgary Tower with views of the Rocky Mountains, foothills, and prairies! It is 626 ft tall and was built to celebrate Canada’s centennial of 1967. When it opened it was the tallest structure in Calgary and the tallest in Canada outside Toronto. I also loved climbing outside of the CNTower on Edgewalk in Toronto! https://www.calgarytower.com/
I walked all around downtown Calgary and photographed The Famous Five Statue– Emily Murphy, Henrietta Edwards, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, and Nellie McClung– about their extensive legal battle in the 1929 ‘Women are Persons’ Case.’ Walking in Olympic Plaza which held the medal ceremonies at the 1988 Winter Olympics as well as City hall and the stunning Central Library. Thank you to Tourism Calgary, Travel Alberta and especially Noelle Aune for helping me discover your vibrant city.
Thank you to Calgary’s top travel writer, Petrena, for spending the day with me at Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. We learned about wolf conservation and the problems of backyard breeding of wolfdogs as exotic pets. 40 wolfdogs live on property in 16 different packs. Take a tour, volunteer, donate at the ONLY wolfdog sanctuary in Canada.

What is your favorite thing to do in Calgary? Next visit, I will meet you at Calgary Stampede, TELUS Spark Science Centre and for go-karting! Thank you Travel Alberta and Tourism Calgary! See you next time.

What is my favorite SUMMER CELEBRATION? A concert at the Hollywood Bowl! and I LOVED seeing Ricky Martin with my parents. “Global superstar Ricky Martin in his Hollywood Bowl debut with Los Angeles Philharmonic and Conductor Gustavo Dudamel for a spectacular once-in-a-lifetime concert. An exhilarating night of “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and many other international hits with the King of Latin Pop!”

From my article, “Feeling Icelandic at Sky Lagoon Iceland“
What to do in Reykjavik? FlyOver IcelandThis immersive film experience is a cross between 4D, IMAX and actually flying past giant glaciers and fast running fjords. This journey whisks you to the most remote and hard to see scenery. I also loved learning about the history of the country through the long house, the trolls and the storytelling!

Luxury Toronto: Fairmont Royal York, Shangri-La Toronto and Four Seasons Toronto

Where to stay in Toronto? I loved staying at Fairmont Royal York! It is one of the historic grand railway hotels of Canada with an incredible location in the middle of downtown. I cannot wait to return! I loved my room, Reign restaurant in the lobby and the POOL! Meet me by the clocktower!
Fairmont Royal York, 100 Front St W, Toronto, ON M5J 1E3, Canada

Reign Toronto is THE CITY’S DINING ROOM! Thank you to Joseph and his incredible knowledge of the history of the hotel and all the best dishes and for taking amazing care of us! The Tenuta Santome Prosecco was divine. I loved the Burrata and heirloom tomato salad and the 6 oz tenderloin with asparagus and AMAZING hand cut fries! Carolann loved the Reign Steak tartar and Lobster pasta. We had my favorite chocolate lava cake for desert. “Influenced by Canada’s rich bounty and curated by Toronto’s grand downtown manor house, REIGN serves sophisticated cuisine, prestigious wine, and inspiring moments at the heart of a city landmark.” Thank you also to Kwame and Jessie!

Thank you to Shangri-La Toronto! We loved dining at the Veuve Clicquot Patio. “Discover a chic destination in the city, where exquisite dishes are paired with the perfect glass of Champagne.” I loved the Ratatouille Flatbread and Shangri-la burger, Carolann was delighted with the Grilled Octopus and Torched Salmon Poke Bowl. Thank you to Natalie for taking great care of us outside on the terrace.
Shangri-La Toronto 188 University Ave, Toronto, ON M5H 0A3, Canada

A giant thank you to Four Seasons Toronto! Your spa is exquisite, my masseuse, Jeff, had magic hands and for your massage, you can add 4 types of aromatherapy, Paraffin wax treatments to restore your hands and feet and coconut oil for your scalp. It is all about customizing your experience. There are heated tables, multiple music choices and the thickest towels and softest robes! This is elevated LUXURY! Make sure to spend time by the pool and the stunning outdoor terrace. Next time I am eating on the this patio!

I loved my dining experience at Cafe Boulud. The heirloom tomato and whipped feta was presented with edible flowers and I felt like I was eating a work of art. Thank you to Hakim, Cremildo, Yann and the entire team! I am still dreaming about the maple salted butter and your fresh bread.
Four Seasons Toronto 60 Yorkville Ave, Toronto, ON M4W 0A4, Canada
