How to Pronounce COMPACT & COMPACT – American English Heteronym Pronunciation Lesson
Learn how to pronounce the words COMPACT & COMPACT with this American English heteronym pronunciation lesson. Heteronyms are words that are spelled exactly the same. They just have a different pronunciation and a different meaning.
Pronunciation:/ˈkɒmpækt /
/kəmˈpækt /
Definitions:-a small flat case containing face powder, a mirror, and a powder puff
-closely and neatly packed together; dense
Playlist:Transcript:Hi everyone! Jennifer from Tarle speech with your heteronym lesson. Two words spelled the same, different meanings, different pronunciations
Our words today are
compact which is a noun and that means small, it can also mean make up, a makeup case typically that we have powder in or neatly packed together and then we have
Compact and that means to force together as the verb
So our rule here is we’re going to stress syllable number one in the noun and syllable number two and the verb. And that’s a general rule of thumb.
So let’s start with syllable two because it’s the same in both words. So to say pact we’re going to start with that P. Open your lips, move to the ah, wide open round shaped mouth, tip of the tongue is down, back of the tongue is pulled way high up. Then we’re going to move to that k. Tongues in about the same spot. Tip of the tongue down, back of the tongue pulled high up, just air puffs out.
Then move the tongue to the back of the top front teeth where the teeth meet the skin on the roof of the mouth for the t.
packed packed packed
Now for syllable number one in com pack, we’re going to stress the com. We’re going to start with that K, you know how to do that, tip of the tongue down, back of the tongue is pulled high up. Keep the mouth open. Open it even wider for that oh sound. Oval shaped mouth. Again tip of the tongue low, back of the tongue is pulled high up, and then close the lips for the M. As you do that air moves out of your nose com.
com com compact compact compact compact
Now for compact the verb we’re going to un-stress syllable one and to un-stress something we need to make it shorter, to make it shorter, we’re going to use that schwa, the uh sound.
cum cum cum
So we have Compact
compact compact compact
compact compact compact
compact compact compact
compact compact compact
And now for a sentence:
We need to compact our clothes into smaller boxes to live in this compact apartment.
So give it a try, I know people are going to notice the difference, if you found this helpful, please share us with your friends, and give us a like, and you can check out our link tree for all of our information.
Thanks so much and I hope to see you again next week!

How to Pronounce DIGEST & DIGEST – American English Heteronym Pronunciation Lesson
Learn how to pronounce the words DIGEST & DIGEST with this American English heteronym pronunciation lesson. Heteronyms are words that are spelled exactly the same. They just have a different pronunciation and a different meaning.
Pronunciation:-a compilation or summary of material or information
-to break down (food) in the alimentary canal into substances that can be absorbed and used by the body
Definition:/ˈdaɪʤɛst/
/dɪˈʤɛst /
Transcript:Hi everyone! Jennifer from Tarle speech with your heteronym lesson. Heteronyms are words that are spelled the same but they have different pronunciations and different meanings. Our words today are:
digest which is a collection of published materials and
digest which means to absorb information or nutrients
So these words have the same sounds in them. I love this lesson because this really highlights word stress. So we’re going to talk more about word stress than the sounds today. So each of these words has two syllables die and jest die jest
But what’s the difference? The difference is the stressed syllable is going to be longer, louder, and higher; and the unstressed syllable will be shorter, lower, and softer. And that’s key! You really need to have both. You need to have one stressed and one unstressed. A common mistake that I see is people stress a syllable but then they forget to un-stress the others. A general rule of thumb here is that we are going to stress syllable number one in nouns and syllable number two in verbs. And this holds true here. So let’s work on stressing syllable number one – die jest and we’re un-stressing syllable number two. It’s softer shorter and lower. Digest Digest digest digest digest
Now let’s flip that for Digest. Syllable number one is going to be shorter – die and syllable number two is going to be longer – jest. digest digest Digest digest Digest digest digest
And now for a sentence:
I read Reader’s Digest and now I need to digest all of the information.
So give it a try people are going to notice the difference. I hope you found this helpful. Let me know what you think because this last thing was a little different than some of my others. And if you need more help, check out our link tree below.
Thanks everyone have an amazing week!

5 Second Rule by PlayMonster – Language Learning Game Recommendation
Today’s language learning game recommendation is 5 Second Rule by PlayMonster.
The game is designed for 3+ players. It is marketed for ages 10 and up. It is tough for some 10 year olds and in my opinion, it is better for 12 and up. There is also a kids version for ages 6+ and a Disney version also for ages 6+.
Here is how I play. Name three items in a category in 5 seconds or less.
The game comes with a timer, that I think is very annoying, but kids love it. Read the clue, turn over the timer, then the player or team need to name 3 items as fast as they can to beat the clock!
The games for the younger kids, kids version and Disney version, come with a game board, but I never use it.
The game encourages fast thinking for vocabulary.
This makes a great speech therapy game for various ages, ESL game, or family game. Get yours today!
Currently, the game costs $19.82 on Amazon.

Guess in 10 Animal Planet by Skillmatics – Language Learning Game Recommendation

Today’s language learning game recommendation is Guess in 10 Animal Planet by Skillmatics
The game is designed for 2-6 players but I typically use this in group classes with more players. The game is marketed for ages 6 and up. I have played this with students as young as four and they enjoy it too.
Here is how I play it with a group. I take a card and read two buzz words or clues. Then the students take turns asking questions. The group can ask a total of 10 questions to guess the animal on the card.
I also will designate a “leader” at times so students can work on leading a group. It is a sneaky way to work on public speaking and confidence.
The game directions say that it takes 20 minutes to finish. But, in a large group, you can just keep guessing since you aren’t looking for a winner.
This animal trivia game is great to work on vocabulary, asking questions, answering questions, problem solving, grammar, turn taking, working as a group, and creative thinking.
This makes a great speech therapy game (box is small for transport), ESL game, family game. You all know that I love to give a learning gift so I always have a few extras on hand to give as gifts. Get yours today!
Currently, the game costs $14.97 on Amazon.
